The 2021 Honda Civic Type R is out for the year, now with a limited edition version and other noteworthy yet subtle add ons to make this a more comprehensive package than ever before. The Type R is driven by its 306 hp turbocharged four-cylinder unit. This Honda is all about driving pleasure and it delivers in spades. It shares its name and underpinnings with the humble Honda Civic and is not just the quickest Honda out there but it is also the quickest sedan in its segment.

This powerful front-wheel-drive Honda gets plenty of hardware to make it fast. Honda has reworked the vehicle to eliminate the dreaded torque steer and as a result, it improves the handling and maneuverability at high speeds. The 2021 Honda Civic Type R is a reasonably practical daily driver that has tremendous capabilities to counter the likes of the Toyota 86, the Volkswagen Golf R, and the Hyundai Veloster N.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Buying Advice

The Honda Civic Type R is a fun to drive vehicle, its prowess is the exhilarating performance and amazing handling capabilities. The brave compact sedan offers ballistic performance that can put many sports cars to shame. The somber sedan has a rather energetic and active drive on the city roads. If you want to go for the sedan we have a thumbs up for that and would recommend you go for the “Limited Edition” trim of which only 600 trims will make it to the US roads.

The Limited Edition trim is a very thoughtful move on Honda’s part and people who want to make the best of their Type-R’s performance will appreciate the upgrades that Honda is giving right from the factory. Apart from hardware upgrades, the Limited Edition gets bundled with new additional exterior equipment for a very reasonable price, thus making it the value pick when it comes to choosing between these two models.

Is Buying a Used Honda Civic Type R any good idea?

The Honda Civic Type R is for those who give importance to performance over great drive experience. However, with time the Honda Civic Type R has managed to make a lot of good things and worked on a lot of shortcomings. Buying a used Honda Civic Type R won't be a very clever idea, though only if you get a great deal for a price it will make the most sense.

The sedan has always remained fun to drive vehicles and offered both performance and practicality. The price trend for the Honda Civic Type R has not been aggressive and Honda has fairly managed to increase the prices of the sedan for 3k to 4k in 5 years term. If you consider its depreciation value, you can save 5k to 6k on a year old Civic Type R, however, it has a leading overall reliability ranking, and buying a used one will never disappoint you.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Engine and Performance

7.4/10

The 2021 Honda Civic Type R will house the same power plant that drives the 2020 Honda Civic Type R. The engine is similarly punchier to drive and fast on the corners. The turbocharged 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine that has evolved from the naturally aspirated unit and is similarly fun to drive.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Hatchback engine

That turbocharged 2.0 L engine drives great torque and power figures. The massive power output drives the front wheels with more swiftness and activeness.

Compared to its competitors, the Civic Type R’s enjoys the maximum power output and stands tall with 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The rivals fall behind by a hefty margin but they also offer exhilarating performance. The Hyundai Veloster has great low-end torque which makes it quick off the line and also aids in bumper to bumper traffic. The Toyota 86 disappoints with its low torque output even at higher revs.

Honda Civic Type R Acceleration and braking Performance

The Honda Civic Type R is known for its commendable performance and enthusiastic ride quality. The Acceleration of the vehicle has always remained a top priority for its makers. With 295 lb-ft of torque the vehicle sprints from 0-60 in just 5.0 secs which is still fancy to look upon for many entry-level compact sedans.

The competitors offer similar performance though with the VW Golf R making it happen in just 4.6 secs.

Looking at other competitors the Toyota 86 has the slowest acceleration figures as said earlier and the Hyundai Veloster is behind by just half a second. The Type R also offers the similarly powerful braking that makes it stop from 60 -0 in just 107 feet of distance making it the best of the lot.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Fuel Economy

9.1/10

Honda’s age-old reputation is making fuel-efficient vehicles. The Civic Type R is though not meant for delivering efficient drives. The vehicle houses a rowdy engine that has been particularly de-tuned for exhilarating performance just like any sports sedan. However, to impress its riders it still promises to deliver 22 miles to the gallon in the city and 28 on the highway. It might not be impressive on paper but considering its punchy power and zestful ride it's better than average.

Compared to its rivals, the Civic Type R does fall behind the Hyundai Veloster and even the VW Golf R which is much ahead in terms of acceleration. The Toyota 86 establishes itself as the most fuel-efficient sedan in comparison offering 32 miles per gallon on highway rides with its boxer engine.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Interior

8.5/10

The only thing we can say about the Honda Civic Type R’s interior is it's not fancy, although the vehicle has vastly improved its interior from the last generation. It now gets plenty of soft-touch interior bits and improved ergonomics. The dashboard is made of soft-touch plastic that gives it a smooth and standard appearance and feels luxurious. The door panels are made of plastic and hard touch plastics at some places occur rough and edgy.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Hatchback dashboard area

Upfront you will get a 7-inch touchscreen occupying the central console area and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster that displays colorful graphics and all important information regarding the vehicle. Apart from that, it is not very interesting on the inside. Space is not an issue for the Honda Civic Type R and it comfortably houses 5 passengers including a driver. The front and rear seats occupants as it gets enough head and legroom to accommodate adults with ease on long highway rides.

Compared to the other rivals the 2021 Civic Type R not only stands out in performance and drive quality but it also offers a practical cabin and a lot of room to house its passengers. The cabin does not lack storage options either, you get ample storage space along with a small cabin and bag holders making it a practical sedan.

What are the Infotainment Features in the 2021 Honda Civic Type R?

The 2021 Honda Civic Type R will continue to get the same infotainment setup which will house the below features:

  • The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility
  • Eight-speaker premium music system
  • HD Radio
  • Bluetooth
  • 2*USB drives
2021 Honda Civic Type-R Hatchback infotainment screen

However, the touch screen has been an instrument of complaint every time, for its laggy operation and freezes often, the rework on the touchscreen or a software upgrade can solve the problem through which needs to be initiated.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Exterior

9.6/10

The exterior of the 2021 Honda Civic Type R remains unchanged from the previous iteration, however, here we are not talking about the Limited Edition trim. The Type R GT basic trim has a funky and aggressive-looking exterior that is aerodynamically stable and designed to aid with downforce. The looks are a subjective thing, I don't like or hate the vehicle’s design but feel that some elements may be overdone. The lines on the sides which extend to the rear with sharp edges and the rear brake lights will surely please a Transformers fanboy.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Hatchback

The aerodynamic design of the vehicle does translate to better grip on tarmac. The vehicle’s exterior design translates to real downforce and combined with the stiffer suspension it offers a planted ride on track but might not be the best for bad roads. The 2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition will offer the most set of exterior features in a fresh Phoenix Yellow Pearl paint, including a gloss-black roof panel, exterior mirrors, and hood scoop along with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires that help it lose weight by 38 pounds.

The 2021 Honda Civic Type R stands close in comparison with the others in terms of exterior dimension, it is wide though among the rivals and has a similar height to that of the VW Golf R. The Civic Type R however, has the least ground clearance and the highest wheelbase. Surprisingly the VW Golf R weighs the most still it manages to pull 0-60 in the least time.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Safety

9.0/10

The 2021 Honda Civic Type R is not the best in terms of safety features but it does fairly well for its price and segment. The model has not been crash-tested by IIHS or NHTSA. The crash test scores will get updated once available. The Honda Civic Type R adds a host of features as standard in the safety front and employs cutting edge driver assistance technology.

  • Forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Road Departure Mitigation System
  • Honda Lane Watch camera

All these features make the Honda Type R a better contender in the safety front.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Competition

8.5/10

Honda Civic Type R vs Hyundai Veloster N

The Hyundai Veloster N is a performance hatchback that is yet another track-focused charger in the segment. The Veloster is the most affordable performance vehicle in the lineup, but it is not as capable as the Honda Civic Type R as it lacks behind in features and equipment.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N

Still one can make a fair consideration for its price and the Veloster N can be a good deal for the money.

Honda Civic Type R vs VW Golf R

The Volkswagen Golf R is based on the previous-generation Golf, It is the most outstanding performer of them all, it makes a unique statement with its acceleration figures. The VW Golf R is a much more capable vehicle than the Civic Type R, but it stands to be an expensive one.

VW Golf R

Although it reaches out to the maximum number of equipment it downfalls on reliability and is again costlier to maintain over time. So the Honda Civic Type R makes sense.

Honda Civic Type R vs Toyota 86

The Toyota 86 is just a good sedan with an average performance, excellent fuel efficiency, and great handling characteristics. However, its engine is quite a letdown since it does not offer a good amount of torque even at higher RPMs. This takes away from the driving experience.

Toyota 86

The 86’s engine is an oddity in its segment though, featuring the only naturally aspirated engine in the lineup.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R Final Verdict

The Honda Civic Type R is a great performance machine that offers unmatched driving pleasure courtesy its punchy V-tech motor and the old school stick shift. The Honda Civic Type R is a mighty performer that sometimes enjoys being a rowdy vehicle. The quick acceleration and the great power of the vehicle convert it into a track-focused vehicle. The warranty figures and safety features could have been better but they seem to be manageable for now. If you are willing to buy one just go for it.
