2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: November 20, 2020

Heavy-duty pickup trucks are not for everyone as it does not require but demand heavy-duty works. And if you are on the lookout for a heavy-duty pickup truck, chances are most likely that you will go for the Ford F-350 which has been the de facto standard for a very long time. But last year, with the completely redesigned and re-engineered 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel, GMC made a huge statement of what they are capable of and are now hitting it back in the segment. The 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD was based on a new platform that gave it the capability and comfort to do heavy-duty tasks without any problem. Now, GMC is back again with the 2021 Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel which, to be honest, is very similar and mostly unchanged compared to the 2020 model. But what we have here is the more robust, powerful, and insanely capable Sierra 3500HD with the Duramax V8 under its hood which is absolutely bonkers in terms of capability. The 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel is yet another reminder to those who want a heavy-duty pick up truck in the segment to look for it rather than getting the widely seen Ford F-350. There are however some very minor updates to the equipment list and features but mechanically stay identical to the current generation 2020 Sierra 3500HD which is on sale now. And that particularly is not at all a bad thing as the 2020 model was such a great all-rounder in the segment compared to all of its rivals.

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

GMC is always known for making one of the most reliable vehicles in the automotive industry. And when it comes to especially the ones to be sold on their home soil, they have absolutely nailed it for a very long time. The pickup truck series has also been very successful in terms of reliability. This is also mostly because of the fact that the Sierra and Silverado share a lot in common. So just like how reliable the Silverado is, the GMC Sierra is also on the same page.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

As expected, the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel has not been rated by J.D. Power and thus we do not have the reliability scores. But given GMC's track record of producing very reliable pickup trucks in the past, the 2021 Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel is also expected to be great in terms of reliability.

Warranty

GMC has always given its pick up trucks great warranty coverage. These warranty coverage figures though not groundbreaking but are still on par with all of its rivals. We get a bumper to bumper warranty for about 3 years or 36,000 miles followed by a corrosion limited warranty for about 3 years or 36,000 miles.

But depending upon your needs, you can go with the range-topping SLE trim level.

How's the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel's infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel is easily among one of the best in the segment. Though being good infotainment, it kind of feels outdated to the competition like the amazing infotainment system found on the Ford F-350. Other features include 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Connected Access, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Sadly because of the fact that it is a Regular Cab with just the front row of seats, we are getting only 2 speakers which though does not sound excellent is still adequate enough to listen to your daily news and radio.

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Exterior

The 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel saw a major overhaul in design with the 2020 model and the same continues with the 2021 model as well. The front fascia is huge with a massive grille that definitely attracts a lot of attention and you can't unsee one on the road as it has a huge road presence which is not necessarily a bad thing at all.

Heavy-duty pickup trucks like the 2021 Sierra 3500HD have become quite popular these days thanks to their massive grille. Every truck here has a very prominent and in your face front fascia which instantly gets your attention. But it is the RAM and the GMC Sierra that looks a little bit better than its rivals.

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Safety

Whilst the NHTSA and IIHS crash test results are very important when it comes to determining a vehicle's safety in the United States, safety features and driver assistance technologies also play an equal role in that. And as expected for such a massive heavy-duty pickup truck, there are no official crash test ratings for the same because they of course have not been crash-tested by organizations like the NHTSA and IIHS. This is understandable given the logistics and economic considerations when crash testing a heavy-duty pick up truck. Anyways, GMC has done a great job in loading the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel with lots of safety features and driver assistance technologies. All these make the 2021 Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel a really safe pick up truck in its segment even though not having scored from crash tests conducted by either the NHTSA or IIHS. Some of these features include automatic emergency brake assist, traction control system, teen driver mode, trailer sway control, hitch guidance system, tire pressure monitoring system, lane change alert, and StabiliTrak electronic stability control system.

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Competition

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel Vs 2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty Diesel Regular Cab

The 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel's toughest rival is the Ford F-350 Regular Cab and it will always be for many more years to come. Both these heavy-duty trucks are pretty closely matched in almost every aspect which is actually a good thing for the consumers as they get to choose what they want. The F-350 Regular Cab though gets better quality interiors with slightly more space for the passengers. But the GMC is the more premium truck of these two and also has more features than the Ford.

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel Vs 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Diesel Regular Cab

If you know the American automotive industry and if you know pickup trucks, you know that the GMC Sierra is basically a spruced-up version of the Silverado. The GMC Sierra is slightly more luxurious, comfortable, and has more features than the Chevrolet Silverado. But it still is very similar to the 2021 Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel. Whatever is said for the 2021 Silverado 3500HD stays true for the Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab. And thus they are siblings means that you will be happy no matter which one you choose among these two. The GMC though focuses a little bit more on luxury and features than the Silverado.

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel Vs 2021 RAM 3500HD Diesel Regular Cab

RAM has been the only manufacturer outside the major manufacturers like Ford and Chevrolet to make a pickup truck that is so good. The RAM 3500 is one of the most exciting and competitive offerings in the segment that is neither Ford or Chevrolet. And yes being not a Ford F-350 or Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD does make it a lot more unique and appealing to the customers. When it comes to the interior quality and features list, the RAM 3500 and the Sierra 3500HD are neck and neck. These are the only two trucks in the segment that focuses on luxury compared to its commercial rivals like Ford and Chevrolet.

2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Final Verdict

The GMC Sierra has always been one of the popular and most preferred heavy-duty pickup trucks in its segment. It has been the customer's choice if they need a really hardcore truck that can handle and pull anything thrown at it. Even though rivals like the all-time favorite Ford F-350 and the much improved RAM 3500 give tough competition, the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel is still a great option in the segment. Good performance, spacious interiors, luxurious, long features list, huge capability, fantastic towing and payload capacity, lots of features, and GMC's reliability all of which make the 2021 Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel the best heavy duty pick up truck in its segment
