One of the more capable utilitarians in GMC’s lineup is the Sierra 2500; cheaper than the Sierra 3500 but a lot more capable than the Sierra 1500. The Sierra 2500HD has been one of the most appreciated trucks thanks to its heavy-duty performance on and off the road. The Sierra 2500 gets out to compete with some of the heavy-weights like the Ford F-250, RAM 2500, and Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, but GMC always manages to one-up its rivals with the level of premiumness on offer.

Ownership costs for the GMC Sierra total for $55,123 for a period of 5 years. It includes everything from repairs, taxes, fees, and even fuel costs. The almost $56,000 cost of ownership might seem a little bit over the top but isn't anything too steep given the Sierra is a premium full-size truck.

Warranty

Peace of mind and reassurance are highly important in the ownership experience of any vehicle. In the event of something unfortunate, before you start cursing your luck, bear in mind that GMC offers a slew of warranty packages for the 2021 Sierra 2500HD.

Criteria

Period

Limited Warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain Warranty

5 years/ 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-Hour Roadside Assistance

5 years/ 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

It should also be noted that the GMC Sierra is entitled to GMC’s complimentary scheduled maintenance upon its initial visit. If the warranty offered is compared with other brands then GMC is a little behind since both RAM and Ford offer 100,000 miles of powertrain warranty, road-side assistance, and corrosion protection.

Miles per dollar

The GMC Sierra 2500HD will have an MPD ratio of 1.43. This means the Sierra 2500 runs for 1.43 miles for every dollar you spend on it. This ratio is achieved by factoring all the running costs to the average distance covered in a year which comes to $10,516 and 15,000 miles respectively.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Buying Advice

If your line of works demands a lot of utilitarian duties, the Base and SLE trims that offer basic features and functionalities would be ideal. But if visual appeal and interior tech is more of a concern then you should opt for the AT4 or Denali trims. It should be noted the AT4 has a more rugged look compared to the Denali, which has bucket loads of chrome to dazzle onlookers.

How about a used GMC Sierra 2500HD?

The GMC Sierra is not something you would call an investment. It can be seen that the Sierra loses around $8000 in its first year as depreciation. Given that it is a $40K truck, it shouldn’t be that much of an issue. However, if you’d bought the entry-level Regular cab at around $35K, losing $8000 is something to be considered. The figures can vary with different variables. it depends upon the truck's condition, maintenance, body strength, and the miles driven by the owner. If you have a properly maintained vehicle that is less driven you can also get a better value. In general, Ford holds more value than most of the competitive truck manufacturers but then again, brand loyalty is a serious factor to be taken in and not something that should be overlooked.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Engine and Performance

9.9/10

A truck as big as the Sierra 2500 needs an equally big engine. The 6.6L V8 under the hood has no problem handling the massive weight of the truck. This gigantic engine makes 410 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque paired to a 6-speed transmission driving the rear wheels as standard. The setup works quite well and elevates the overall driving experience.

The Sierra and the Silverado share the same engine and hence make the same power. The F-250 makes the least amount of power here. However, it does cost the least in the class. The RAM is at a sweet spot making the most power but being placed in the middle in terms of cost.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Acceleration And Braking Performance

The acceleration of the GMC Sierra 2500 is commendable considering its heft. Weighing upwards of 6,000 pounds, this massive truck manages to reach 60 mph from 0 in just 7.5 seconds. The transmission does a good job of putting the engine’s power to the ground. Sudden accelerations are met with a quick drop of gears, thrusting ahead.

The brakes in the Sierra 2500 work great, despite a very obvious flaw. The brake pedal has a substantial amount of dead travel. Nearly a quarter of the pedal delivered no braking at all. However, when the brakes do deploy, they provide a confident feel. The soft pedal makes it easier to push it all the way.

How much can the GMC 2021 Sierra 2500HD Tow?

The GMC Sierra 2500 being a Heavy Duty variant hauls enough load for most needs. The 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD can tow up to 15,000 pounds and carry a payload of upwards of over 3,800 pounds, which is adequate for most needs in our regard.

While Sierra’s towing capacity is very impressive, the RAM has it beat. With over 17000 pounds of towing limit, the RAM 2500 takes the lead. Payload capacity, however, differs with the F-250 edging ahead with a 4170-pound capacity. Here, the Silverado and the Sierra don’t reflect the same numbers, with the Sierra having a slightly better payload capacity.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Fuel Economy

6.0/10

As with all Heavy-Duty trucks, the EPA does not rate them, more importantly though, they fall under commercial use. The same holds for the Sierra 2500HD, but GMC has given it a generous 36-gallon fuel tank which should be enough

The information of the trucks is not available so it is pretty hard to compare and get a distinct result, as the information jumps from the situations in which they are being tested. A standard result would make it easier for us to decide which one of the trucks would be a better choice.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Interior

8.0/10

Long trips are welcomed in the Sierra 2500 with just the thrum of the engine to be heard, which for the most part is a soothing tone. Being a truck of this stature, interior amenities are top-notch and so is the quality of materials. The Base and SLE are for the most part intended as workhorses so expect extensive use of plastics inside.

To suit the style you want, the Sierra 2500 has a choice for everyone, from being basic and functional to being outright luxurious, the GMC offers you both. The massive size of the truck enables it to have more than enough space for the occupants and there is no compromise on that front.

How’s the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD’s infotainment system?

The GMC Sierra comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display with an improved user interface that has Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi Connectivity. It is the same setup as seen last year and is carried over for 2021 since GMC took the effort to update the infotainment unit for 2020. Still, the infotainment unit could’ve been better when compared with that of the F-250 and the RAM.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Exterior

8.0/10

The 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 has a massive road presence. The large grille and halogen headlight give an aggressive look to the truck and adds more muscle. The Sierra's brawny exterior is emphasized by optional equipment such as power-adjustable trailer-towing mirrors with LED spotlights, a variety of assist-step choices to name a few.

At the side, the base crew cab gets steel rims that look retro and have an old-school charm to them and feels like a breath of fresh air in the sea of similar-looking diamond cut alloys. These wheels do look rugged and can go anywhere. The GMC Sierra is a total workhorse and that’s exactly what it looks like on the outside. Step up to the SLE and things do take a turn for the better with slightly updated exterior elements. The AT4 and Denali further amp up the exterior glam with off-road specific add-ons and loads of chrome respectively.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Safety

7.0/10

GMC has tried to include as many safety features as they can afford to put into their truck for the price point. The Sierra is equipped with features like back up cameras and reverse sensors as standard along with brake assist and forward collision alert. The Sierra also offers features that are unique to it. Hitch Guidance allows users to use the backup camera to help align the trailer better while reversing. Some other features are:

  • Parking assist
  • Four-Wheel Automated Braking System
  • Hitch Guidance
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Trailer Monitor
  • 4 Wheel ABS
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Post-Collision Safety Systems
  • Stability Control
  • Emergency Braking Assist

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Competition

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Vs Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

The Silverado and the Sierra are basically the same truck. The difference lies in their nature. While the Silverado focuses on getting the work done, the Sierra is generally seen as the more polished of the two. It has better interiors and a flashier exterior. The choice is up to the end-user in our regard.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Vs Ford F-250 Super Duty

On paper, the Sierra is the truck anyone would prefer. It is quicker than the F-250, it has better-stopping power, has better cabin space, and most importantly, more bed space. Well, the Sierra may have more cargo space or maybe faster, but the F-250 is ahead in one key factor, towing capacity. Although the difference in towing capacity isn't much, but nonetheless. Other than that it’s difficult to pick a winner since the Sierra offers a more premium offering while the F-250 is a better utilitarian overall.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.2/10

While trucks have a distinct customer base, it’s very hard to convert a Chevy guy to a Ford and vice-versa. The brand loyalty is so fierce that regardless of what the trucks are, it doesn’t really matter to the end-user. That said, the GMC Sierra 2500 is not a slouch by any means and is one of the best, if not the best full-size heavy-duty trucks available in the market. Of all the trucks we’ve compared, the Sierra is the more premium offering out there and while others do offer an option for a similar experience, it costs a bit more than the GMC.
