Pickup trucks were always extremely popular in the United States and we know that by seeing how successful the Ford F-150 was for all these years. Every major manufacturer in the American automotive industry wants to have a pie of the pickup truck segment. The GMC Canyon is the corporate cousin of Chevy's Colorado and hence gets the same powerful 3.6L V6, and a 2.8L turbo-diesel as engine options. The GMC Canyon more than makes up for its slightly higher asking price with a more upscale cabin and plenty of available features. With prices starting at $27,595 most will find the Canyon a great truck for puttering about in the city.

The mid-size pickup truck segment is very popular and has very competitive offerings. The GMC Canyon even though being very popular in the segment for all these years, now faces stiff competition with the likes of Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

GMC has its allegiance with General Motors which means that it indirectly inherits the reliability aspects of Chevrolet. All GMC trucks are very reliable and have good warranty figures from GMC making them really easy to own for a very long time.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

When it comes to vehicle ownership, reliability plays an important role. The GMC Canyon is one of the highest-rated SUVs in the GMC lineup when it comes to reliability. The J.D.Power rates the GMC Canyon at an impressive 77 out of 100, which is pretty good. Further breakup of the report is as follows:

  • Overall quality and reliability: 73/100
  • Driving experience: 69/100
  • Resale: 85/100
  • Dealership experience: 87/100

Of all the five states, California benefits the most by having the lowest starting price for the base trim of the GMC Canyon Extended Cab at $27,334. In terms of owning the costs associated, the GMC is not as cheap as some of its rivals. The ownership costs for the GMC Canyon total for $39,817 for a period of 5 years. It includes everything from repairs, taxes, fees and even fuel cost. The almost $40,000 cost of ownership might seem a little bit over the top but isn't anything too steep given the Canyon is a premium midsize pickup .

Another particularly interesting trivia is that the GMC Canyon has not been accounted for in any recalls by GMC. This is a statistic from the NHTSA and we are pleased to hear modern day GMCs refraining from recalls thanks to improved manufacturing techniques and quality control.

Warranty

GMC is known for its warranty and reliability mostly because of its strong ties to Chevrolet. And the GMC Canyon shares a lot with its sibling, the Chevrolet Colorado which means that it is just as reliable as the Colorado.

Criteria

Period

Basic Warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain Warranty

5 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Roadside Assistance

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

GMC offers a basic warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles with the 2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab followed by 5 years or 50,000 miles warranty for the powertrain. GMC also offers roadside assistance to the Canyon for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Buying Advice

Of all the four trim levels, we would recommend the Denali which offers almost everything for the price you pay. The standard equipment list is very long and there are options to add multiple equipment packages that add new features and cosmetic updates. It also gets the 3.6-liter V6 engine as standard which is the pick of the three available engines in the Canyon range as it takes just 6.7 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill.

Miles Per Dollar

The GMC Canyon will have a MPD (miles per dollar) ratio of 3.2. This means the Canyon runs for 3.2 miles for every dollar you spend on it. This ratio is achieved by factoring all the running costs including taxes and insurance to the average distance covered in a year which comes to $4,680 and 15,000 miles respectively.

Is buying a used GMC Canyon Extended Cab a good idea?

A used GMC Canyon is a great choice as it offers great value for the owners. The 2020 GMC Canyon Extended Cab SLE loses up to $5,685 on depreciation in the first year and at the end of five years of ownership, the total depreciation cost is at around $10,892.

The maintenance cost of the 2020 GMC Canyon is pretty competitive at $342 for the first year but gradually increases for up to $1,500 for the fifth year. But still, considering other used pickup trucks in the segment, the GMC Canyon looks like a much better buy.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The 2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab is expected to come with a total of three engine options all of which are adequately powerful and have enough grunt to pull this massive near 4000 lbs truck.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Engine

These engine options include a 2.5 liter inline 4 cylinder unit for the base trims followed by the 3.6-liter V6 engine and a 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine. The base 2.5 liter inline 4 cylinder DOHC engine produces 200 hp and has 191 lb-ft of torque on offer.

The GMC Canyon and Colorado have the exact same power and torque figures as it is obvious that they share the same engine. And these two also have the most power and torque on the segment as both the Tacoma and Frontier fall behind by quite some margin.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Acceleration and Braking Performance

With the 3.6-liter V6 engine under its hood on the 2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab, it can do the 0-60 mph sprint in just 9.0 seconds which is not good but commendable for a near 4000 lbs pickup truck.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab 0-60 MPH Just In 9 Sec.

The quarter-mile times though are not very impressive as it takes up to 17.1 seconds to finish the same. Even though being so massive and weighing at around 4000 lbs, the 2021 GMC Canyon really has great braking performance as it stops from 60 mph to a standstill 0 mph in just 121 ft.

The Nissan Frontier does the 0 - 60 mph faster than all its competition but this is mostly because of its low curb weight at 3785 lbs which is the lowest in the segment. But surprisingly, it takes the longest distance to stop from 60 - 0 mph at 125 ft. The Toyota Tacoma does the best in terms of braking from 60 - 0 mph by just stopping in 119 ft beating the GMC Canyon by a mere 2 ft.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The GMC Canyon always performed well in terms of fuel economy and the 2021 GMC Canyon continues to do the same as it has the segment-best fuel efficiency figures. The 2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab does 20 mpg in the city followed by 26 mpg in the highway and has a combined mpg rating of 22. The fuel tank capacity is at 21.0 gallons which gives it a combined range of 440 miles.

The Chevrolet Colorado with the same engine as that on the 2021 GMC Canyon has the exact same fuel efficiency figures. Even the fuel tank capacity is identical at 21.0 gallons which results in also the exact combined range of the 2021 GMC Canyon. The Toyota Tacoma comes closer to that of the 2021 GMC Canyon in terms of the range because of its marginally bigger fuel tank capacity at 21.1 gallons.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Interior

8.0/10

The one place where the GMC Canyon differentiates itself a lot from the Chevrolet Colorado is in its interiors. The 2021 GMC Canyon has a very upscale interior with good quality materials and build quality which cannot be matched by any other truck in the segment.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Seats

And since the 2021 GMC Canyon is a mid-size pickup truck, there is not a lot of huge space inside compared to the Sierra’s cabin. In comparison, we feel the GMC’s cabin is well appointed than the interiors of the Toyota Tacoma. The front seats are very wide and supportive making it very comfortable to drive on any terrain.

The 2021 GMC Canyon has the most space in the segment which is the same with the Chevrolet Colorado as well because they obviously share the same platform. The Toyota Tacoma has the least space in the segment whereas the Nissan Frontier is the only other mid-size pickup truck to match the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado in terms of space.

How’s the 2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab’s infotainment system?

The 2021 GMC Canyon gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard with 6 speakers as standard. Other standard infotainment features on the 2021 GMC Canyon include 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, steering mounted audio controls, and radio.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Dashboard

Thankfully, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is available as standard from the base trims. Higher trims get a bigger 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a great sounding 7 speaker Bose premium sound system.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Exterior

7.0/10

The GMC Canyon has more resemblance to that of its bigger brother, the Sierra pickup truck. It is undoubtedly a mid-size truck in the way it looks by the larger arches and strong lines all over the truck. It also has large wheels along with a large imposing grille giving it a huge presence on the road.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Safety

2.0/10

GMC has equipped the 2021 Canyon Extended Cab with lots of safety features as standard making sure that the mid-size pickup truck keeps all its passengers safe. The NHTSA has rated it with 4 stars and the IIHS has been pleased with the Canyon’s overall safety offered.

Some of the safety features offered include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, 6 airbags, and GMC's Teen Driver system. Other features include the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, traction control system.

Apart from these, some of the optional features include daytime running lamps, rear vision camera, and tire pressure monitoring system.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Competition

8.0/10

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab vs Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab

The GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado are the perfect examples for sibling rivalry. Both these mid-size pickup trucks share a lot and have many things in common starting from the engine to even the chassis.

2021 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab

But where the GMC differentiates itself from the Chevrolet Colorado is in terms of the interiors as it is more upscale and luxurious than Colorado.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab vs Toyota Tacoma CrewMax

The Toyota Tacoma is one of the two Japanese rivals to the 2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab. The Tacoma though being a good overall mid-size truck in the segment does not offer tough competition to not only the Canyon but also to the Chevrolet Colorado.

2021 Toyota Tacoma CrewMax

The engines also do not offer enough grunt to pull this massive truck compared to the Canyon.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab vs Nissan Frontier Extended Cab

Yet another Japanese rival to the 2021 GMC Canyon is the Nissan Frontier but again it does not come close in giving tough competition to the same.

2021 Nissan Frontier Extended Cab

The Canyon feels more plush, luxurious, and well built than the Nissan Frontier making it the most comfortable mid-size pickup truck in its segment. The engine on the Nissan Frontier also does not offer adequate power and torque figures compared to the Canyon.

2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab Final Verdict

4.8/10

The GMC Canyon is the perfect balance between practicality and capability which everyone wants when buying a mid-size truck in this segment. The engines are powerful and have enough grunt to move this massive 4000 pound truck along with great fuel economy.

The things that make the GMC Canyon stand apart from the rest of its competition is the quality of its interior materials, space on the interiors, engine, and long list of features. All these combined with its practicality and capability make the 2021 GMC Canyon Extended Cab a great choice in the mid-size pickup truck segment.

It's a more recommended option for long work drives.

Pros - Excellent mileage, cushioned seats are comfortable, and nicely crafted interior.

Cons - No disappointments.

I have always been a fan of GMC and they've never disappointed. Our new Canyon drives smooth, stable and noise free. It also gets us decent miles for the gallon. I like the bluetooth features like hand free calling, answering the call, and listening to music. I really love every inch of the cabin starting from soft cushioned seats to the simple and decent layout with smart storage bins here and there Love the design on the inside The plastic for sure are sturdy and the brakes work like magic. Love the strong bright headlights that leave no inch of road dark while driving at nigh Driving around the states for just a few months. I still need a few more months to be sure about the reliability of the GMC Canyon. $425 per month lease payment and zero deposit payment which is a good deal. The sales manager helped us out by asking what price range we are looking to spend monthly and provided with a perfect truck at a perfect price. No nonsense

Can do both!

Pros - Good offroading ability, cat back exhaust, and great outward visibility.

Cons - Less towing capabilities & additional exterior accessories are expensive.

If the question is offroading, GMC Canyon won't be the wrong answer. Its sturdy, its smooth, and with after market AT tires, it just knows no stopping. The optional stuff in this thing cost an arm and a leg. I got my AT tires from tire rack under 1k and saved myself from highway robbery at the dealership The design definately doesn't strike as the one on a proper offroader since it mostly depicts day to day practicalit Just a truck which now looks perfect because of the Wrangler duratec AT tires It has a backup camera to see if anything is at the back along with muliple airbags that could mean a difference in any case of road mishap No such issues. It has been doing great so far especially since I have not been gentle on it A little expensive if everything is considered The dealer helped me throughout the buying process, answered each and every concern with diligence but at the end while coming to price, they budged a little

Tech loaded Canyon

Pros - Electric steering, latest electronic features, old school design

Cons - No side steps, Underpowered, slick seats

There is not such thing that makes the Canyon feel like a truck while driving. The handling is precise and smooth and the power is just mediocre. It has a number of desired electronic technology amenities like bluetooth connectivity, electric steering. What it doesn't have are the side steps on either side of the truck for better accessibility The interior is spacious and the bed part has enough space to stow whatever is needed. The seats although are proving to be slick lately With all this tech, the old school design compliments the overall appeal even more This vehicle has advanced safety features that helps to drive it safely in case things ever go sideways This specific trim with 2.5L powertrain isn't the best to choose when looking at the reliability because of its underpowered nature Worth to buy for the cost of $23,900. I bought this vehicle in a single transaction. Overall purchase experience from test driving to finance everything went very smoothly and pleasant.
