2019 GMC Canyon Price, Review, Ratings and Pictures

Updated on: January 7, 2021

GMC Canyon was first introduced back in 2004 and was equipped with four, five, or six-cylinder engine units with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. In 2008 Canyon for the very first time had an option for a 5.3L V-8 which lasted till 2012. The GMC Canyon is the most affordable truck that GMC offers and has many configurations to choose from; there is one for every type of buyer.

The Canton seems to be inspired from Chevrolet Colorado but differs by the luxurious Denali trim offering. The towing capacity is impressive at 6,200 lbs and is capable off-road as well but the Toyota Tacoma TRD is a better vehicle off-road. The 2019 Canyon Crew Cab model starts at $27,500 at base trim without any options.

We Recommend

There is one Canyon for each purpose; the SLE and SLT is your day to day prowler, the SLE with All-Terrain is the off-roader, and the Denali is the luxurious of the bunch loaded with features. We recommend the SLE trim level because it offers the best value starting at $30,900 and it is available with the choice of all three available power-trains and loaded with sufficient features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wide choice of options. The all-terrain package can only be had on the SLE trim.

2019 GMC Canyon Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The Canyon comes with three engine options: a 2.5L 4-cylinder, a 3.6L V-6, and the 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel 4-cylinder engine; you should avoid the puny 2.5L 4-cylinder because it lacks torque and feels like a mismatch for the Canyon. Both the other options are really good, especially the Duramax diesel. For 2019, the transmission comes with two choices: a standard 6-speed automatic and an optional 8-speed automatic.

The best power-train option for the Canyon is the 2.8L Duramax diesel which has impeccable torque of 369 lb-ft and can tow up to 7,700 lbs. equipped with either a 6-speed or an 8-speed automatic transmission. An outback 4WD with locking differential is also an option. However for off-road purposes the sibling Colorado ZR2 is a more extreme option.

Acceleration

The base 2.5L inline-4 takes around 9.0 seconds to reach 60 MPH while the V-6 takes only 6.3 seconds to reach 60 MPH which is very quick for what the vehicle really is and that too while providing acceptable MPGs.

Braking

The Canyon comes with 12.2-inch brakes on the front and 12.7 inches on the rear. The brakes can stop the Tacoma from 60 MPH in just 121 feet. The canyon is only outperformed by the Tacoma by mere 2 feet at 119 feet.

Ride and Handling

The Canyon Crew Cab drives smooth and the ride is sporty despite the near 4,000 pounds of weight. You won't notice the ladder frame chassis and the leaf spring suspension while driving the Canyon. It does a good job hiding the unsophisticated components in the ride and handling department.

Towing Capacity

For towing the only power-train option relevant is the 2.8L Duramax 4-cyl diesel which can tow up to 7,700 pounds which is comparable to some full-size trucks. The 369 lbs-ft of torque is enough and capable while hauling heavy loads.

2019 GMC Canyon Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The Canyon is at the top of the charts in terms of mileage, the base engine will do 20 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. What's better is the turbo-diesel Duramax which does 20 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway however, GMC will charge you $4,965 for the luxury of having the turbo diesel in your Canyon.

2019 GMC Canyon Interior

8.0/10

Canyon's interior is more upscale than its sibling Colorado. The seats are well cushioned and can be opted in premium cloth or leather. The rear seats in the crew cab might feel a little too upright. The Canyon Crew Cab can seat up to five people with ample legroom for the passengers in the rear seat.

Infotainment

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard for 2019. The base configuration has a 7" touch screen while SLE and above configuration offers an 8" touch screen with GMCs IntelliLink system on all the configurations. The top of the line Denali trim offers a 3D GPS navigation system along with a seven-speaker audio system by Bose.

2019 GMC Canyon Exterior

7.0/10

The Canyon seems like a smaller version of the Sierra line-up with the same boxy shape and aggressive lines all around. The smaller dimensions however make the canyon more capable in urban areas than the Sierras. The lighter weight also makes it more exciting.

2019 GMC Canyon Safety

2.0/10

The 2019 GMC Canyon Crew Cab scored a 4-star rating in NHTSA Crash Testing which makes it just as similar as other trucks competing in this segment of mid-size trucks. For the IIHS the Canyon performed average in the crash testing and performed well enough.

For 2019 Canyon comes standard with basic safety features. Advanced safety features like lane - departure warning and forward collision assist can only opt-in the SLE or SLT trims and they are standard in the Denali. Some of the key safety features are:

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
  • All-speed traction control
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • 6 airbags
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2019 GMC Canyon Competition

8.0/10

2019 GMC Canyon Crew Cab vs. 2019 Chevrolet Colorado

Both of these vehicles are the same in almost every aspect in mechanical terms like the same towing capabilities, same power-train options and similar behavior on the road. The advantage that Canyon has over Colorado is better interior materials and appointed leather. The disadvantage is that the all-terrain trim cannot even come close to what the Chevy offers in Colorado with the hardcore ZR-2 Trim.

2019 GMC Canyon Crew Cab vs. 2019 Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma is famous for the off-road capabilities and the unshakable reliability it offers but lacks the nice interior of the Canyon and with less mileage and towing capacity Tacoma it does not make sense to prefer the Toyota over GMC for day to day purposes. However, if you live in the countryside or outback Toyota"s Tacoma offers great reliability and capability off-road.

2019 GMC Canyon Crew Cab vs. 2019 Nissan Frontier

Calling the Nissan Frontier outdated would be an understatement. The bland and economical interior that provides an average comfort and low fuel economy, lands the Nissan at the very bottom of the list of mid-size trucks. Frontier is also the cheapest and offers great reliability but falls short in terms of providing any attractive feature against the rivals.

2019 GMC Canyon Final Verdict

4.8/10

The Canyon offers you a class-leading interior with impeccable capabilities comparable to full-size trucks like its towing capabilities and with great fuel economy as well. The exterior looks muscular and offers you more street-cred than some of the competition.

What impresses the most is the 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel that delivers unbelievable mileage with class-leading torque and can tow like a full-size truck. The benefit of smaller dimensions than a full-size truck but with nearly the same hauling capabilities makes the Canyon a choice that you won't regret.
