The GMC Canyon Crew Cab is a mid-size pick-up truck and shares a lot of its structure and parts with the Chevrolet Colorado. The GMC Canyon is powered by a 2.5 liter inline-4 making 200hp, but, if that is not enough power for you there is a 3.6 liter V6 making 3.8 hp. Being a GMC, it has a lot of premium features when compared to the colorado including leather seats and a good infotainment system. As a bonus, its base version can tow 7,000 pounds in weight. The GMC Canyon goes up against the Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma.

Overall Rating

The Canyon more than makes up for its slightly higher asking price in top trims with more upscale cabin and plenty of available features. However, the Canyon disappoints when it comes to available safety feature. And if you really want to go on an adventure, the indestructible and hugely capable Toyota Tacoma TRD is a better pick. That said, most will find the Canyon a great truck for puttering about in the city.

Of all, we think the GMC Canyon SLE ($28,890) is the best value as it is equipped with features like 8-inch touchscreen infotainment, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Moreover, you can also choose upgrades such as the All-Terrain package that adds an off-road-oriented suspension, a rear locking differential, hill descent control, and heated seats. On top of that, it can have any engine as one, please.

We Recommend

The car is well implemented with some good features and provides all an enthusiast needs with an impressive and powerful engine, viscous wheels. The engine on this car is sufficient and is always ready to provide all the power you need. You can also add most of the advanced features as add-on options to your pickup truck.

2017 GMC Canyon Engine and Performance

8.1/10

The GMC Canyon comes with three engine options. Out of all, we will advise staying away from the base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated Inline-4 making 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque paired to a 6-speed automatic which directs all the power to the rear wheels only. Next up is the throaty 3.6 liter V6 making 308 bhp power output and 275 lb-ft torque. This engine is paired to an 8-speed automatic which sends all the power to either the rear wheels or all the wheels.

The most powerful of the above pickup trucks at the GMC Canyon and the Chevrolet Colorado boat making 200 hp from the same 2.5 Liter inline-4 engine. Then comes the Toyota Tacoma making 159 hp from over 2.7 Liter inline-4 engine.

2017 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Ride and Handling

The 2017 GMC Canyon handles surprisingly well for a car of its size. The weight on the steering is adequate which inspires confidence in the corners. The truck despite its length feels planted on most occasions. Grip from the all-terrain tires is sufficient at all times. We would not recommend taking it all out off-roading but, we do say enjoy it on the rough path as it will function beautifully and for this, we do recommend getting the 4x4 drivetrain.

2017 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Acceleration Performance

The Canyon with the base 2.5L inline-4 does 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 16.3 seconds However, upgrading to the 3.6L V6 the 0-60 mph sprint time reduces to 7.1 seconds and quarter-mile of 15.4 seconds. It comes with a top speed of 99 mph.

2017 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Braking Performance

The GMC Canyon comes with a set of disc brakes measuring 12.2-inches rotors on the front and 12.8-inch rotors on the rear. The brakes are good enough to bring the pick-up truck to a stop at 121 feet from 60 mph. The brakes are also going with the future of the anti-lock braking system.

2017 GMC Canyon Interior

7.0/10

The GMC Canyon interior is upscale with good quality materials and plenty of soft-touch surfaces. The interior can comfortably seat 5-people. The front seats are 4-way power-adjustable for the driver and 2-way manual adjustable for the front passenger. As you go up in the trims you will find a 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat as well.

The interior upholstery in the base trim is cloth and as you go up in the trims you will see leatherette and the Denali has leather. Depending on the trim they will also be color options as well. In the higher trims heated and ventilated seats are standard, as is the heated steering wheel.

The same is seen with the back row with the GMC Canyon and the Colorado offering 35.8 inches of legroom. The Toyota Tacoma legroom offering is close but a few inches short in the front and back rows compare to the canyon.

2017 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Infotainment System

The Canyon comes with a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen depending on the trim you choose. You can also go for an upgraded seven-speaker Bose audio system and a navigation system (an enhancement of the standard 8-inch IntelliLink interface). The Base variants miss out on the touchscreen but they do get a normal radio with a 4.2 color screen.

Other infotainment features include:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Navigation
  • Satellite radio
  • USB connectivity
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Wireless charging (Denali)

2017 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Cargo Capacity

The 2017 GMC Canyon has a pick-up bed for carrying all sorts of cargo. The bed is available in two lengths and this can hold quite a few items including recreational activity vehicles and kits like mountain bicycles, kayaks, camping equipment, and few more items, which is good enough for your everyday and lifestyle needs.

The GMC Canyon we reckon can hold a bit more cargo in terms of volume thanks to the upgradable cargo bed length. We can say the same for the Chevrolet Colorado as it too has the same option. The Toyota Tacoma however, only offers one-bed length, so it will hold less in volume as compared to the Canyon and Colorado.

2017 GMC Canyon Exterior

8.3/10

The Canyon in its 2017 avatar looks muscular and imposing. The large grill upfront with the GMC logo reminds you of the larger GMC Sierra. Squared wheel-arches fit neatly into the design. The chrome skid plate and large bumper do justice to its macho character. As a whole, the design looks modern and upmarket. Depending on the trim you can also get 20-inch wheels including a 16” spare steel wheel.

2017 GMC Canyon Safety

6.0/10

The NHTSA gives an overall four-star rating out of a possible five-star rating to the new GMC Canyon Crew Cab. The IIHS gives good ratings to the Canyon Crew Cab but the vehicle fails to get a “Top safety pick” award from the organization. GMC’s standard safety features list for the Canyon includes:

  • Head curtain side airbags
  • A rearview camera
  • Oversized side mirrors for enhanced rearward visibility.
  • Forward collision warning system
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Trailer sway control system
  • Hill descent control system (on all Terrain versions)

2017 GMC Canyon Competition

8.1/10

GMC Canyon Vs Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma Access Cab can handle any terrain with ease and is the most capable off-roader in the class. The Canyon’s performance is better than the Tacoma and offers more space too. Additionally, Canyon is nearly $3500 cheaper than the Tacoma. If you are looking for a serious off-roader go with the Tacoma otherwise, Canyon is a great value for money.

Chevrolet Colorado Vs GMC Canyon

Engine's same, towing capacity almost identical, pricing not much difference, so what's the major difference between the two cousins? It's the cabin quality, THe Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab’s interior is value for money but Canyon offers more refinement and plush design, especially in the Denali trim. So, it is up to you to decide which badge you want to see in your driveway.

2017 GMC Canyon Final Verdict

The GMC Canyon gracefully draws a middle ground between looking too car-like and being too truck-ish. This GMC is going to fulfill all your city driving duties and at the same time fill-in for the suburbs needs. With plush interiors, a long list of comfort features, and powerful yet fuel-efficient engines the Canyon makes a strong case for itself.
