Gone are the days when the language of luxury was restricted only to European tongues. Today, the luxury automotive segment has some strong contenders from Korea, Japan and America that growl on the European league. However, one brand in particular that has gained significant fluency in the bespoke premium accent, and in no time, is Genesis. Evolving from a flagship Hyundai to a dedicated premium division in a very short time, Genesis has almost taken the auto-industry aback.

Launched in 2017 as their second product, the G80 slots in between the lower G70 and the full-fledged G90, in the Genesis tray. Sitting in the midsize luxury sedan segment, the G80 has always impressed auto-geeks with its strong and balanced composition, especially at an affordable price point.

Now in its fourth year, the 2020 Genesis G80 is the last iteration of its first generation. Good thing though, the 2020 G80 retains all its familiar delicacies without any major change, since its bound to get a complete overhaul for its 2021 model.

2020 Genesis G80 Features

8.0/10

Trim line for the 2020 Genesis G80 remains the same as earlier and you still get three trim levels to pick from. One of the most essential quirks of the G80 is that all the three trims come with a unique engine. There is a 3.8 liter V6, 3.3 liter twin-turbo V6 and a 5.0 liter naturally aspirated V8 powering the 3.8 4dr, 3.3T Sport and the 5.0 Ultimate trims respectively. Prices start at $42,550 for the base model and go all the way above $57k for the top trim. All models essentially come as rear-wheel drive, but with an additional $2500, all-wheel drive can be paired with either of these.

We recommend

We suggest going with the 3.3T sport trim priced at $55,750. Apart from the peppier twin-turbo V6 engine, the 3.3T also gets all the premium bells and whistles that Genesis is offering on the G80.

2020 Genesis G80 Engine and Performance

Irrespective of the trim and engine you pick, all the three available engines are fairly apt in cruising the 4500 lbs G80 around town, with ease. However, the base 3.8 liter V6 is better off, since at times it does feel a bit underwhelming. The more refined and powerful 5.0 liter V8 is a monster that does provide brisk acceleration but also has a huge appetite.

It's the 3.3 liters twin-turbo V6, that strikes the perfect balance between power, driving fun and fuel efficiency. The twin-turbo unit packs enough punch with 365 horses and offers a very smooth power delivery. The available 8-speed automatic transmission responds eagerly as well and can be hooked to a rear-wheel-drive or an all-wheel-drive system. During startups, there is a very small turbo lag, but that is the case with almost every turbo-powered engine these days.

2020 Genesis G80 Sedan Has a 3.3 Liter twin-turbo V6 Engine

The available 365 horses are distributed to the wheels very evenly and the powertrain doesn't seem to be hazy at all. Try flooring this Korean beauty and you have all of the available 376 lb-ft of torque at your disposal, in a very seamless fashion.

The other participants in the competition too, get somewhat similar powertrains, but they are not as harmonious as the one in the 2020 Genesis G80. The G80’s refined and more powerful twin-turbo V6 hooked to a clutter-free transmission, delivers the most engaging driveability among the lot.

Acceleration

Despite its bulky size and mass, the Genesis G80 races past finish lines like a sprinter. The 365 hp twin-turbo V6 that motivates the 3.3T Sport, also powers the G70 Sport which is an absolute firecracker on the streets. The familiar engine continues to delight us in the G80 as well, with the 3.3T Sport clocking from 0-60 in just 5.4 seconds.

These numbers are outrightly impressive for a car this size and indeed, the G80 3.3T Sport in reference here, is the quickest among its rivals. A more powerful and refined powertrain along with a better power-to weight ratio makes things easier for the 2020 Genesis G80 3.3T Sport.

Ride and Handling

Where the 2020 Genesis G80 truly stands out in its class is its impressive ride quality. It is definitely not as comfortable as a Lincoln continental, nor it is as sporty as a BMW 5 series. Where the G80 makes the cut is its beautifully balanced proportions of comfort and sportiness that one would expect from a midsize luxury sedan.

Inside the G80’s lap of luxury, you enjoy a plush and silent ride all the time. While the comfort-tuned base model is a bit lower on the fun factor, it's the 3.3T Sport that adds more drama to its character. The standard suspension is nicely tuned and counters road undulations seamlessly, while the acoustic laminated glass aptly isolates the cabin from outside noise. All of this translates into a poised and smooth ride on the inside.

2020 Genesis G80 Sedan Front View

The Sport model gets an adaptive variable suspension that enhances damping force during spirited sessions without trading off the ride quality. The nicely weighted steering wheel might not be the most talkative in its class, but does its job very accurately. For better engagement, switch the G80 3.3T Sport into Sport mode and things change pretty quickly. The Sport mode enhances throttle response, shifts are held longer, the suspension tightens up a bit, adding extra stability around corners and the steering gains some heft as well. Overall, the Sport mode livens up the complete mechanical apparatus for a higher adrenal rush and makes the G80 as communicative as it could be.

Braking

Hyundai as a brand has always gone harder with the braking unit and in its luxury department, the bar has been raised higher. The 2020 Genesis G80 gets ventilated discs at all four corners secured with ABS as well. The brake pedal offers spontaneous response to driver inputs without any brake pedal delay and brings the G80 from 60 mph to 0 in just 116 feet.

2020 Genesis G80 Sedan Front Brake is 14.2 in.

Those breaking numbers for a midsize luxury sedan is certainly more than respectable. The only other contender that topples the G80 in terms of braking efficiency is the Volvo S90 with a 107 feet 60-0 stop.

2020 Genesis G80 Fuel Economy

Yes, the 2020 Genesis G80 has the most dynamic character among its class, but that does come at a price of a poor fuel economy. The G80’s 20 mpg combined is fair enough for its class, size and its zippier personality, but in its segment, it sits right at the bottom in the fuel economy rankings.

2020 Genesis G80 Interior

8.0/10

Let alone the tag of a seasoned luxury brand, the 2020 Genesis G80’s serene interiors can defy every other product in its class. The cabin of the G80 feels spacious and is very well ornamented with leather, carbon-fiber and aluminium inserts. There are a beautifully laid out dashboard and center console with a plethora of physical buttons that not only give ita premium vibe but also allow ease of accessibility. The leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel with multiple controls feels good in hands and details like an analog further accentuate the richness inside.

2020 Genesis G80 Sedan Front Seats

The seats are very well padded and bolstered and with the premium leather upholstery they feel all-day comfortable. The front seats get 8-way power adjustability along with heating and ventilation functionality. The rear seats have a comfortable recline angle they also the heated treatment in the Sport trim. Sadly though, the rear seats lose out on practicality since they cant be folded down.

Needless to say, this midsize Genesis ticks all the boxes on the comfort sheet. The lower window line and the large panoramic sunroof provide great outward visibility and the seats are one of the most comfortable you can get in this segment. With the G80, you also get the best in class front-seat room and rear headroom. However, rear-seat legroom might be the only complaint for taller passengers.

Infotainment

For infotainment necessities, the base model is equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen that can also be upgraded to the optional 9.2-inch display. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are part of the standard package along with Bluetooth, USB connectivity, Satellite radio and Navigation. The base model comes with a 7- speaker audio system, while the higher trims get the magnificent 17- speaker Lexicon premium audio system. The infotainment display is sharp and crisp with a clutter-free user interface and also delivers lag-free responses.

Cargo

The 2020 Genesis G80 has the smallest body length in its segment and that also reflects in the size of its trunk. Its average sized 15.3 cu-ft of cargo space can accommodate some of your shopping carts, but don't expect it to be as generous as the XTS or the Continental.

Further complicating things for the G80 is its fixed rear bench, let alone the center passthrough for sliding in longer items. The Cadillac XTS and Lincoln Continental benefit from their longer wheelbase and length, that allows opening of better space in the trunk.

2020 Genesis G80 Exterior

If you have been a fan of the original ‘Hyundai Genesis’, the 2020 G80 is definitely going to appeal to your senses. After the evolution of Genesis as a separate division, hyundai called off its flagship sedan only to relaunch it as the ‘Genesis G80’.

The 2020 G80 might be the last model year of its first-generation, but its exterior presentation is still a sight to behold. There's the familiar large grille up front flanked by LED headlamps, long and sleek side profile culminated into a rear profile that is highlighted by tinted LED tail lamps, quad exhaust tips and a rear diffuser. All these elements beautifully add-up together to give the G80 an elegant and sporty exterior sheet.

The Sport model gets some distinctive visual treatment like copper highlight around the grille and headlights and meshed grille to separate it from the other two models.

The midsize sedan segment where the Genesis G80 competes also has members that have their unique design language. The Lincoln Continental looks very stately, the XTS is youthful and aggressive whereas the Volvo S90 has a gentle and modern appearance. On the other hand, the Genesis G80 blends in all the above-mentioned qualities of its rivals, very appropriately. It looks classy yet premium and sporty at the same time.

2020 Genesis G80 Competition

2020 Genesis G80 vs Cadillac XTS

The Cadillac XTS is a well built American midsize luxury sedan that offers exclusivity on a budget. It gets premium interiors, it's the lightest among the competition and has the best in class cargo space as well. Despite this, the XTS is not as beautifully packed as the Genesis G80. The G80 has a more upscale interior and is also more comfortable than the XTS. The G80 is also the quickest and also the most fun to drive machine among the lot. Last but not the least, with the G80, you get an extensive suite of tech and safety features, that the XTS misses upon.

2020 Cadillac XTS Sedan

2020 Genesis G80 vs Volvo S90

Volvo’s flagship sedan, the S90 is the closest rival to the G80 in the segment. Not only the S90 looks very youthful and clean on the outside, but also on the inside. It has a very minimalistic interior covered in high quality material and has a powerful engine as well. However even with all these goodies, the G80 races ahead of this Scandinavian, in terms of overall commixture. The G80 is more powerful, sporty and engaging to drive, is quicker, and has better cargo space as well. The G80 is also more rich in tech gadgetry along with a more premium ride quality.

2020 Volvo S90 Sedan

2020 Genesis G80 vs Lincoln Continental

TheLIncolnContinental is one of those cars that are extremely focused on their pursuit. In the case of the Continental, the pursuit happens to be lavishness. The Continental is a bespoke luxury sedan and that too at a very attainable price. Be its bold and classy exteriors, opulent ride quality and extravagant interiors with ultra-luxury features, the Continental’s aspirations are very similar to that of a Bentley or a Rolls Royce. On the other hand, Genesis G80 is a driver-oriented car. Its lighter on its feet offers an energetic powertrain at an affordable price. The Genesis is more engaging to drive, is more reliable and equally packed with safety and tech features.

2020 Genesis G80 Final Verdict

If you are out in the market, looking for a midsize luxury sedan, on a $50k- $60k budget and you don't want to stick to the Germans, the Genesis G80 is the ultimate product for you. The G80 presents in a beautiful amalgamation of luxury, technology and driving pleasure at a price that no other product in the segment does.
