Overall Rating

Carrying forward the legacy of the GT500 tag, the 2020 Shelby GT 500 makes its debut. Instantly recognized by the coiled cobra emblem waiting for its prey, it is the apt homage to the late Carroll Shelby. 2020 GT500 is the most powerful of all, packing a monstrous 5.2L supercharged V8 that produces an awe-inspiring 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of peak torque. This puts the Shelby GT500 dangerously close to the menacing Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye.

Such a powerful muscle car could easily scare off any competitor but there are several others in the industry that measure up to certain aspects of this special Mustang. The Camaro ZL1, for example, is much more well suited for the track. Then there is the Dodge Challenger, whose top-of-the-line trim owns dragstrips all across the world. Yet none of them measure up to the balance of beauty, brains, and brawn offered by the 2020 Shelby GT500.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Features

9.0/10

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is available as a single trim in the Mustang’s ever-increasing lineup. However, unlike the other ’Stangs, it will see a limited production run and will be available with a longer list of options. The GT500 starts at an MSRP of $72,900, though ticking most of the boxes would easily get it over $100,000. Fast and loud is the name of the game here, and the Shelby GT500 doesn't hold back anything. You can hear one of these tearing up the drag strip from miles afar. Even then, a premium B&O sound system and optimal interior quality ensure you are not left out on other aspects of the car.

What do we recommend?

We suggest you go for the handling and carbon-fiber packages that make this Shelby lighter and more agile. The painted racing stripes, which is an absurd $10,000 option, would be included for GT500 enthusiasts as well.

9.0/10

The beating heart of the 2020 Shelby GT500 is a 5.2L V8 that holds an Eaton 2.65L roots-type supercharger. Fittingly named the 'Predator', it is capable of sending 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic developed by Tremec specifically for the GT500 takes care of the transmissions. It can shift between gears in less than 80 milliseconds, which is faster than the blink of an eye. The power is delivered to the rear axle through a light and durable carbon-fiber driveshaft. All this makes the 2020 Shelby GT500 the most powerful Ford car, ever!

Even with such immense power, the Shelby doesn’t exceed the Hellcat Redeye, which has a bigger and bolder Hemi V8 under the hood. Both the Jaguar F-Type and Chevy Camaro fail to match the Mustang’s immense power figures. Instead, offer a much better experience when you turn the steering wheel. Still, the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission offers much more joy to operate than any other muscle car you can go for in America.

How fast is this Shelby?

The 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500 feels right at home on the drag strip. It even has a whole mode dedicated to it, along with imperative dragster functions such as line lock and launch control. It can reach 60 mph from a standstill in about 3.5 seconds and complete a quarter-mile drag in 10.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 180 mph. Although Ford claims that, without the speed governor, it will go more than 210 mph.

As far as competition goes, it is on par with most of them. The Shelby GT500 can easily beat a Camaro or Hellcat in a drag race any day of the week, owing to its lighter body. However, around the track, it faces stiff competition and fails to keep up with the Chevy.

Is the braking as impressive as it's acceleration?

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 comes with massive front brakes, 16.5 inches in diameter to be exact. To put that in perspective, the discs are as big as a large pizza. Courtesy of Brembo, these have 6-piston calipers and are optimized to reduce thermal damage by 30% when maximum braking is applied. In a recent test, the Shelby GT500 came to a halt from 100 mph in 3.9 seconds.

Though it has exceptional braking performance for a muscle car, the GT500 falls short of both the Camaro and the F-Type due to its sheer weight. The Camaro ZL1 benefits from a superior weight balance. On the other hand, the F-Type is lighter and, with its puny engine, can’t be considered as a proper muscle car at all.

How well does this pony behave?

The older Mustangs always had a problem when going around corners. Though it may be iconic to classic muscle car lovers, it made them seriously handicapped around the track. The 2020 Shelby GT500 isn’t like that at all. It balances its weight pretty well. Combine that with an adaptive suspension and Michelin Sport 4S tires, and you may just have the best handling Shelby to date. The cornering capabilities of the GT500 can also be enhanced by going for the Handling package. It fits in adjustable struts for more rigidity and a rear spoiler to increase downforce. It is nice to see carbon-fiber around the body as well, making the car lighter and more agile.

While the Shelby GT500 is an absolute beast in sport mode, it is a soothing road companion in Comfort mode. Its adaptive suspension changes its purpose to provide a comfortable ride, soaking up bumps if and where necessary. The steering is direct, making you feel like you’re driving a much more expensive supercar. The car remains composed in heavy traffic and can be very well used to become a weekend cruiser at the push of a button.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 doesn't offer many miles per gallon of fuel. The ride is comfortable enough to consider it a weekend cruiser, though you may have to prepare for a lot of refills during your trip. With a combined EPA rating of 14 mpg, it certainly won't get you across LA on a full tank. But if you’re really looking at what Ford has accomplished for the GT500, the cost of fuel economy seems like an acceptable tradeoff.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Interior

The interior of the Shelby is as premium as it gets. You can spot a lot of ‘Cobra’ badges, reminding you just what kind of car you’re in. The seats can be equipped with faux-suede or high-quality leather depending on your choice. Ford also offers to throw in Alcantara or carbon-fiber for the interior panels at the owner’s behest. The visibility is excellent overall, improving on its Dodge and Chevy competitors. The build quality is excellent, although a bit of cheap plastic on the doors and console remind you that it is a Ford Mustang after all.

The seats can only seat two, with the rear acting as a shelf for all your drag-strip goodies. There is plenty of headroom and legroom, making it easier for taller drivers to get themselves comfortable. The Recaro seats are cozy and can be made even pleasant with heating and ventilation. True performance enthusiasts would rather go for the sports bucket seats that have slots for a 5-point racing harness. Getting in and out of the cabin is effortless thanks to Shelby’s no-nonsense wide-open soft-close doors.

What's there to keep you entertained?

Just like any other car that comes under GM’s umbrella, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 comes with a Sync3 infotainment system. Even though it has started to show its age, it offers a user-friendly interface. The system is controlled by an 8-inch touchscreen that is sensitive to every input. The system has a variety of connectivity options like Bluetooth and USB to make you feel right at home. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported as well.

The GT500 is Ford’s best muscle car to hit the road. So, it deserves nothing but the best sound system to go with it. The audio system is a 12-speaker manufactured by Bang & Olufsen. It has self-adjusting active noise cancellation, much better than what you can find on any Chevy or Dodge. It also boasts a 10-channel DSP amplifier that lets nothing but the best-tuned sound fall on your ears. The surround sound is outstanding thanks to the precise placement of the speakers, some built into the C and D pillars of the cabin.

How much cargo can it store?

When going back home from your local drag strip, you can easily carry a few bags of groceries in the trunk of the 2020 Shelby GT500. It offers 13.5 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk, with more on where the back seats are supposed to be. The small-item storage for the driver and the passenger is also very generous. There are a couple of cupholders and several small pockets in the console to store phones, purses, and sunglasses. The glove box is amply spaced and is very easy to access for a driver of average height.

If you’re looking for the most aggressive looking Mustang, with a mean attitude to even put the wildest muscle cars to shame, you need only set your eyes upon the 2020 Shelby GT500. With handpicked color schemes that fit well to the car’s overall design, it has a body that is sure to turn the heads of onlookers and paparazzi alike. Its wheelbase is not as long as other American muscle cars, yet its sharp edges and long curves make it look like anything but. The headlights and tail lights carry forth from the Mustangs of yesteryear. Its looks are further enhanced by the silver Cobra badges exclusive to every Shelby.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Front View

The body design doesn’t just look cool but adds to the aerodynamics of the car, assisting in creating necessary downforce at higher speeds and keeping the car stable. The wind blows harshly over the front end, which is why it is better to go for the painted racing stripes instead of the regular vinyl ones. The sheer force would just rip the vinyl apart after a few sorted drag runs. Not so for the painted ones that come as a ridiculous $10,000 option.

Some might argue that the smaller wheelbase takes away from the muscle car quality of the GT500. On the contrary, it makes the car more fun to drive as the driveshaft is smaller, giving you a quicker response from the rear tires. This, in turn, makes the acceleration that much more intense when you put the foot down.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Safety

7.0/10

It is okay to think that a wild car like the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 might not come with a lot of advanced safety features. Still, Ford wouldn’t want you to total their fastest production car ever if there is anything they can do to avoid it. The 2020 Shelby GT500 comes with all the safety features you would find when checking all the boxes on any regular Mustang GT. Various driver aids such as Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Keep Assist ensure that your GT500 remains Scott-free when you take it out on a drive.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 vs Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The Shelby and the Camaro are two cars from the separate ends of the muscle car spectrum. Chevy has tried going with the times, realizing that performance-focused supercars can dominate way better than just the big-engine-bigger-attitude approach of the muscle cars. This is what becomes crystal clear as it can easily be beaten by the GT500 on a drag strip. The reverse also holds true on any race track you can think of. Still, at nearly $10,000 less, it is no shy machine. The engine is borrowed from a Z06 Corvette and four seats offer much more practicality.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 vs Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye

The Dodge Challenger has not much changed over the years. If you’re used to the classic 1970s Challenger, even the 2019 version looks pretty much similar to the one from fifty years ago. It ditches with the idea of aerodynamics, having a boxy body and a behemoth of an engine beneath it. While the GT500 uses a certain degree of finesse to go fast, the Challenger goes for brute force. Even the supercharger on this 797-hp powerhouse is bigger than what the Mustang uses. Where it lacks is the ability to take turns at speed. The Mustang can easily leave the Challenger Hellcat Redeye searching its tail lights around corners since it is lighter and has better aero.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 vs Jaguar F-Type

There is no way a Jaguar F-Type can beat a 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 in terms of performance. Why you might prefer it is because it is packed with much more luxury, offering a more comfortable driving experience for the sensitive driver. It is pretty quick and can deliver immense fun at the track, just don’t expect it to compete with a lot of performance-focused cars. For a true petrolhead, the Shelby GT500 will always reign supreme. It also wins over the Jaguar in terms of technology and infotainment features. You can be more relaxed in a Jag but the Shelby offers a lot more fun.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Final Verdict

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 carries the flame of fast and exciting muscle cars in a firm manner. It makes the spirit of Carroll Shelby proud, enhancing his legacy and proving to the world that it is not yet time for the big-block engine to hit the bin. The car offers a perfect combination of old school power and advanced technology, delivering something that deserves reverence for decades to come. Don’t feel bad that it is a limited production. That’s just what makes the 2020 Shelby GT500 a bit more special.
