Mustangs have been a supporting pole of the muscle niche and have always acted as a guiding beam towards the betterment of the pony cars. However, when the times soared, and Ford was struggling to keep up with the glamour factor of the Italian brands, Shelby came to the rescue, and ever since it has been an extensive part of the “American Oval”.

What carries Carroll Shelby’s legacy even after so many years is the Ford Shelby GT350. The Shelby GT350 is a car that makes its producers proud while keeping the muscle heritage gratified. Befitted with a 5.2L V8 engine, belting out 526 hp and 429 lb.-ft. Of torque.

Available in 2 trim options, the Shelby GT350 and the Shelby GT350 R are 2 exclusive offerings in the American muscle fragment. The prices for the Shelby GT350 start at $60,440, whereas the ultimate track weapon, which is the Shelby GT350 R can be procured at a price of $73,435.

While this competitive price tag makes the Shelby GT350 more accessible, it also lends it in a pit against some other legendary muscles of the market such as the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and the monstrous Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. While there is a cut-throat vying amongst these American muscles, the European muscle, the BMW M2 Competiton also acts as a lucrative option of the segment. So will the Ford Shelby GT350 be able to make it big in 2020 as well? Scroll down to find out...

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Features

7.0/10

The Ford Shelby GT350 is offered in two trim options - the basic Shelby GT350 and the more track-focused Shelby GT350 R. The prices for the GT350 start at $60,440, whereas the GT350 R ranges around $73,000 mark.

Both the trims get the same powertrain, which is a 5.2L V8 engine, belting out 526 hp and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. However, the difference that comes into being is that the GT350 R is more track-focused with a stiffer suspension, damping system, and extensive use of carbon fiber. Moreover, the GT 350 R does not get rear seats, and can only seat 2 occupants.

We recommend

If you are not an extensive track visitor, we recommend you to go for the basic Shelby GT350 as this car provides you with an engaging performance on the track and can also act as an easy daily driver. The GT350 R’s tunnel track focus makes it a bit difficult to live with in daily driving conditions.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The Ford Shelby GT 350 Coupe Obtains its octane via a naturally aspirated 5.2L V8 engine. This mighty powerhouse tucks in 526 ponies and 429 lb.-ft. Of the peak spinning force, which kicks in at 4750 rpm and lasts all the way up to 8250-rpm redline.

The engine’s natural aspiration and the high rpm kick-in of the peak torque make this engine a bit compliant on low-revs, but as you stab the throttle pedal, the V8 powerhouse will enchant you with its sturdiness.

This Serpent deploys a 6-speed manual transmission to consummate its transmission duties effectively (cause what better than a manual shifter in a muscle car). This 6-gear shifter fits into each gear with utmost accuracy and rewards you with accentuated thrust upon each downshift.

How fast is the Ford Shelby GT350?

The Shelby GT350 Coupe is an enchanting Serpent that moves ahead with utmost authoritativeness and responds eagerly to throttle inputs. The V8 engine is flexible and while it can pull off the well-mannered on-road character smoothly, it can also reward you with hyperactive sprinting times, and that too with an exhaust note which directly affects the flow of hormones.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe hits 0-60 mph in just 4.2 sec

The Shelby GT350 Coupe can go from 0-60 in a time of mere 4.2 seconds. The GT350 also clocks a quarter-mile lap time of 12.3 seconds, at a speed of 119 mph. The top speed of the Shelby GT350 remains capped at 180 mph.

What about the braking performance of the Ford Shelby GT350?

The Ford Shelby GT350’s hyperactive sprinting capabilities call out for some super capable halting capabilities as well. As a result, this pony car receives six-piston Brembo front brake calipers and 15.5-inch two-piece cross-drilled iron discs on the front wheels.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe has 15.5-inch front brakes

What makes a place on the rear wheels is a set of four-piston Brembo brake calipers and 15-inch two-piece cross-drilled iron discs. Together, this arrangement does a great job of decelerating the GT350, leashing those 526 ponies effectively. The Shelby GT350 Coupe’s 60-0 distance count came down to 102 feet, which happens to be the very best in the segment.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Shelby GT350 is a car that delivers on and off the track as well. With a 5.2L V8 engine, that belts out 526 hp and 429 lb.-ft. Of torque, the GT350 has enough grunt to excite the toughest of your goosebumps. The throttle is ultra-responsive and makes this car exhibit dynamic dashing proficiencies.

The engine’s peaky nature makes this car go a bit soft on lower rev-ranges, but as you keep stapling the gas pedal, the Shelby GT350 rewards you with an ultimate presentation of power, accompanied with a hormone-engaging exhaust note.

The GT350 handles curves and corners with utmost dominance. If dipping in and coming out of tight turns at high speeds is an art, then you’ve just engaged with the Picasso of this feat. The Serpent tackles corners without the slightest hint of any body-roll.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The Ford Shelby GT350 is claimed to go a distance of 14 miles in the city or hasten up through 21 miles on the freeway. Summing up these figures we get a combined mpg digit of 16, which seems decent for a muscle car that houses a V8 engine and delivers more than 525 horsepower.

The Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe’s mpg figures are at par with the competitors, but the ride’s small fuel tank is a downside. The GT350 gets 16 gallons of fuel tank capacity, which seems a bit meek in front of the 19 and 18.5-gallon fuel tank offered by the Camaro ZL1 and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat respectively.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Interior

8.0/10

The Shelby GT350 does not get much away from the typical interior layout of the Mustang. There is a balanced blend of modern and retro elements. The interior fit and finish seem fine with faux-suede trim, however, the abundance of cheap-feeling plastic makes its presence felt here as well, just like other standard Mustang models.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe front seats

Speaking of the seats, the front row houses a set of standard Recaro sport seats that feel quite supportive with abundant stuffing and just enough bolstering to hold you in place when you attack those corners with spirit. The front row seats are high on space with abundant legroom and headroom and do not compromise on comfort for the sake of performance. However, the rear seats of the GT350 are more of a marketing gimmick, and cannot be considered fit to house occupants.

The adaptive suspension of the GT350 makes up for a chiseled performance on the track and a soft ride off the track. The cabin of the Shelby GT350 Coupe is astonishingly calm for a car that gets frameless windows and such aggressive wheels.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The Ford Shelby GT350 gets Sync 3 infotainment panel as standard. This panel has an interactive interface and presents you with all the information in the form of crisp graphics. However, the screen is not very receptive to touch inputs, and there is a noticeable lag in reaction time.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe infotainment system

Some of the most prominent infotainment features of the Ford Shelby GT350 are:

  • 9 speakers
  • FordPass Connect 4G LTE WiFi
  • Steering-wheel mounted audio controls
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Radio data system
  • AM/FM radio
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • Wireless phone connectivity
  • SiriusXM AM/FM/HD/Satellite with seek-scan, single in-dash CD player
  • Voice-activated radio
  • CD-MP3 decoder
  • SYNC suite
  • Navigation system with voice activation

What about utility?

On one hand, where the Shelby GT350 can create absolute havoc on tracks, it does not compromise on the practicality that a standard Mustang offers. The car is high on the utilitarian aspect, which does not hamper its appeal as an easy daily driver. The Ford Shelby GT350 offers 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

The 13.5 cubic feet of space on offer in the Ford Shelby GT350 is on better than the 9.1 cubic feet in the ZL1 and almost equal to the M2 Competition’s 13.8 cubic feet. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat offers the best in class trunk space with more than 16 cubic feet on offer.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Exterior

7.0/10

The Ford Shelby GT350 looks almost the same to the standard Mustang models, however, there are a few tweaks here and there which distinguishes the GT350 Coupe from a standard Mustang. For instance, the sport-tuned suspension and several exterior tweaks such as the Serpent badging, wider track width, and an extended rear end lends the GT350 broader and sturdier looks.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe three quarter view

The GT350, just like other Mustang models formulates a blend of retro-cool and modern form. The front end of the GT350 Coupe is dominated by a wide and frowned grille, which sits atop the enlarged air intakes. The side profile of the GT350 Coupe has an aggressive stance with defined character creases running all across the side panels and the presence of side gills, lend this car the typical muscle vibe.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Safety

6.0/10

Mustang models have always been an epitome of sheer strength, let alone the Shelby GT350, which further injects this pony with a shot of steroids, thus accentuating the ride’s sprinting capabilities. However, the auto-marquee takes into consideration the safety of all the muscle-aficionados and offers a wide array of safety features as standard in the Shelby GT350. Some of the most eminent safety features on-board the Shelby GT 350 are:

  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Fixed front head restraints
  • Remote activated perimeter/approach lights
  • Side-impact bars
  • Electronic stability
  • AdvanceTrac ABS and driveline traction control
  • Occupant sensing airbags
  • Traction control
  • 2 rear head restraints
  • 4 ABS channels
  • Daytime running lights

  • Brembo four-wheel disc brakes

Shelby GT350 Coupe vs. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the most expensive offering of the segment, with prices starting from $62,995. The ride houses a 6.2L Supercharged V8 engine, belting out 650 hp and 650 lb.-ft. Of torque. Accrediting to these brawny power figures and comparatively lighter heft, the Camaro ZL1 comes out as the fastest going car of the segment, going 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds, thus making a place in the “Sacred 3” league. However, the Camaro ZL1 lacks the utility aspect of the Shelby and the Dodge.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Shelby GT350 Coupe vs. Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is one of the most reasonable offerings of the lot and definitely the brawniest one. The Challenger SRT Hellcat houses a 6.2L Supercharged HEMI V8 which generates a humongous 717 hp and 656 lb.-ft. Of torque. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat does the 0-60 sprint in just 3.7 seconds, and that is when this dodge is the heaviest vehicle in its class. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is an absolute monster that can set the drag strips ablaze, yet it can also pull off the utility prospect pretty well, with a cabin that can accommodate up to 5 people and the best in class cargo capacity of 16.2 cubic feet.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

Shelby GT350 Coupe vs. BMW M2 Competition Coupe

Amidst the Big-American Muscle Frenzy that this segment is a host of, the BMW M2 Competiton Coupe is a European car that is trying to make it big here. The BMW M2 Competition is the most reasonable and the most balanced package here. While those 405 ponies lend this car ultimate sprinting capabilities, the car is the best handling car here.

2020 BMW M2 Competition Coupe

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Final Verdict

8.9/10

The Shelby GT350 is a car that keeps the muscle heritage upright and also carries the elements of practicality. The GT350 can pull off a mania on the track and can exhibit mass appeal on the road as well. However, the mediocre interior is the only downside with this pony car running on steroids.

Hands down the best car I've owned till date and I've been a proud owner of a few well known cars as well. Mustang, the name itself is enough for a machine that can do 0-60 in about less than 5 seconds. Handling is the foremost reason why I call it my best buy so far. It hugs the corners real tight and doesn't feel like leaving the tarmac like other cars even when entering the bend at about 60. Brakes are equally responsive and brush up the entire wonderful driving experience. Right when I got my hands on my Mustang, all that fanfare and hype started to make sense.
