The 2020 Ford Mustang GT has not been specifically tested for its safety during a crash by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Nevertheless, it shares its body with its less powerful coupe cousin that aced all the tests with a 5-star rating across the board. It should be noted that the Mustang GT Convertible may get a lower rating due to its lower roof strength.

You may want to think twice before putting the pedal down and putting all of the 460 horsepowers you have at your disposal to the road. Taking the roof off does compromise the car’s safety to a certain degree. Every car with a retractable top has a bigger chink in its armor because it weakens the strength of the chassis to some extent. However, with the Mustang the change is not something you need to worry about much.

The 2020 Ford Mustang GT finally dares you to go the distance and feel its V8-driven power without having to worry about shoddy handling. The Performance package equips the car with better brakes and an adjustable suspension to make the car turn precisely where you want at any speed. The chassis is strong and able to withstand the toughest of impacts with little to no harm to anyone occupants.

A few advanced safety systems and driver aids are also optional for the GT. These are standard for the Premium trim and above. Some key safety features of the Mustang GT include:

  • AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Dual-stage driver and passenger side-mounted airbags
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Front Collision Mitigation System
  • Dual-stage driver and passenger front airbags
  • Curtain 1stand 2nd Row Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Dual-stage driver and passenger knee airbags
  • MyKey System which includes Top Speed Limiter, Audio Volume Limiter, etc.
  • Outboard Front Lap And Shoulder Safety Belts
  • Back-up camera

What Features Make the Mustang GT Safe?

While the Mustang is more than enough to keep you safe in case of a crash, it comes with a variety of optional safety features. You get all of this standard if you go for the Mustang GT Premium Fastback or Convertible. Some of the most notable systems are detailed as follows:

  • My Key System :- We all have that one friend or teenager in the family, the one who just can’t be trusted with a fast new car. But Ford doesn’t want you to keep hiding the keys from them. The new MyKey system regulates how fast and how far your new Mustang goes with such a person behind the wheel. It also limits the audio volume and prevents the engine to start without active seat belts, so you can be free of any stress the next time they ask for a drive.
  • Lane Departure Warning And Lane Keep Assist :- The Mustang GT also comes with a Lane Departure Warning system that monitors lane markings on either side of the car. The system alerts the driver when unknowingly switching lanes. The system can even provide feedback into the steering to get the car back into the center of the lane. However, this system is only effective on roads with distinct lane markings.
  • Front Collision Mitigation System :- This system constantly measures the distance of the Mustang from any obstruction in front of it. If the system senses that a collision is imminent, it warns the driver through visual and aural cues. If the driver fails to respond accordingly to the warning, the system automatically applies the brakes. The magnitude of the braking power varies, but the system optimizes it enough to bring the car to an immediate stop at speeds of up to 45 mph.
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning :- It is more than likely that you will take your Mustang GT to the nearest raceway to burn some rubber. Spirited driving over extended hours can take its toll on the tires. No matter how safe the car is, tires blowing out at the most inconvenient moment can create a perilous situation. To avoid such circumstances, the Mustang comes equipped with a Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning system. It alerts the driver if and which one of the tires is in a critical state. This allows for the driver to slow down and make his/her way safely to a location to reinflate or change the tires, whichever is most suitable.

Is the 2020 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Safe to Drive?

With so many options for advanced safety features available to choose from, the 2020 Ford Mustang GT Convertible does its best to prevent any high-risk situation to arise in the first place. It is well sought for safety and its chassis lives up to the mark of safety standards of other similarly powered convertibles in the market, even though it lags a bit behind the Mustang GT Coupe. You can never go wrong trusting this car to keep you safe during any drive.

Pony car.

I didn? buy this for short drives like shopping, and commercial purposes. It? purely meant for long drives on the highway. I like the sound of the engine roaring under the hood while driving at great speed.
