In case you haven’t noticed, the foreigners have invaded the land of the free and taken over the American Muscle cars. While most of them have run out of production, a few offerings such as Chevrolet’s Camaro and Ford’s Mustang have still kept the segment alive and going. Now that the Camaro has shed more weight and has inclined more towards being a sports car, the consumers are not left with many options. That’s where the Mustang comes in.

For those of you who have been longing to own a typical “advanced” muscle car with a top-down drama, it’s all the better, as the Mustang convertible is back in a 2020 avatar. Now with more standard features and a classic design language, the 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible is one of the best options in the market you can buy today. So, what makes it a worthy pick over others? Let’s move ahead and find out.

The Mustang is offered in various trims and models, each one with a different temper. However, the most affordable convertible Mustang you can buy today starts at $32,170 and is offered in two trims. With a nominal 4-pot motor discharging duties beneath the hood, the Mustang convertible behaves exactly like its elder sibling - the GT, just quieter and slower. However, do not underestimate this baby Mustang as it doesn’t fall short of upholding its forefathers’ reputation.

At this price point, the Mustang challenges its all-time rival - The Camaro convertible, and some modern machines such as BMW 230i convertible, Nissan 370Z convertible, and Audi A3 convertible. In this tough battle where the muscle cars are gradually fading away, can the Mustang convertible hold its own? Time to see how the story unfolds.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible Features

9.0/10

The Mustang is offered in various avatars. Ranging from the modest “Ecoboost” models, going all the way up to the absolutely bonkers “Mustang GT”. Since the Mustang GT is priced way above this price bracket and also comes equipped with a much bigger motor under the hood, we have treated it as a separate vehicle.

Having said that, the beginner Mustang convertible is segregated in two trims. Mechanically, there are no differences between the two at all. However, come to the feature-list and both the trims are worlds apart, around 5000 dollars to be precise. Along with the standard features (which are a lot), Ford also offers a plethora of optional packages for all interests, be it appearance, performance or security.

For a premium of $5000, the top-trim “Ecoboost Premium” seems to be a sensible deal as it comes packed with a host of features as standard. If you can stretch upto the top-trim, we’d recommend you to pick this over the base trim.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible Engine and Performance

7.0/10

Gone are the times when American muscle was synonymous with massive motors under the hood. The 2020 Mustang Convertible might still retain some of the classic muscle traits in the aesthetics, but the folks at Ford decided to make it slightly more affordable and economical by inserting an inline-4 motor under the hood that balances the proportions between power and economy.

Peek beneath the 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible’s skin and you’ll be greeted by a 2.3-liter, EcoBoost, the twin-scroll turbocharged, inline-4 motor that gives you control over 310 horses that pull this “pony” with 350 lb.-ft. of force. Good news here for the purists as this motor comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission that directs the power to the rear wheels. Apart from the slick and smooth shifts offered by this gearbox, you also get a “Launch Control” program along with this manual transmission, just to give you the best out of this motor in the event of a drag race.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible engine bay

For the few who prefer an automatic transmission, fret not, as there is also an optional 10-speed automatic gearbox on offer. However, do not forget that picking the automatic over the manual transmission will also result in an increase in the MSRP of the vehicle. There’s another “quirk” here. Strangely enough, if your Mustang is equipped with the automatic gearbox, you lose out on the Launch Control Program that, otherwise, comes as standard with the manual one.

The Mustang shines bright here with the maximum torque figures of the lot and the second-best power figures. The Nissan 370Z is the leader in terms of power figures here leaving the rest of the competition way behind - the BMW 230i being the most inferior one here in this regard.

How fast is the Ford Mustang Convertible?

The 2020 Mustang convertible is just a tad bit slower than its coupe cousin, taking 5.6 seconds to breach the 60 MPH mark from a standstill. Aim for the quarter-mile mark and the puny 4-pot unit enables this convertible to cover the distance in 14.1 seconds. The acceleration is linear and the torque is spread pretty evenly across the rev-range. There is a negligible lag from the twin-scroll turbocharger and the manual gearbox is a cherry on the cake.

The Mustang loses out to most of the rivals here in terms of acceleration. The Nissan 370Z is the quickest to the 60 MPH mark and further retains the lead up to the quarter-mile mark as well. It is then followed closely by the Bimmer and the Camaro respectively.

What about the braking performance of the Ford Mustang Convertible?

With 12.6-inch rotors undertaking the braking duties on all four wheels, the 2020 Mustang convertible behaves confidently when slammed on the brakes. Some might feel the brake pedal to be on the squishier side, however, the overall response from the vehicle is commendable.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible brakes

When tested, the Mustang convertible came to a halt from the 60 MPH mark in just 107 ft, which is pretty impressive for a vehicle weighing over 3,600 pounds. There is some nosedive at the front in panic braking situations, however, it won’t really scare you off.

The Nissan takes advantage of its low curb weight and makes the stop in just 105 ft, hence, locking itself in the first position. The Mustang lines up with the Bimmer head-to-head for the second place, leaving the Camaro at the last.

What about its driving dynamics?

Adhering to the definition of muscle cars, the 2020 Ford Mustang convertible behaves exactly like one. Yes, the wobbly character that was evident in its older iterations has now been eradicated and this baby Mustang feels sure-footed at all times. The steering is well-weighed and pretty friendly to the user.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible rear three quarter view

Throwing this pony around the twisties does invite some cabin roll, but if your Mustang is equipped with the optional bigger 19-inch rims, things get more interesting. However, doing that will also compromise with the ride quality and slight juddering inside the cabin becomes evident at low speeds. So, before you opt for the bigger rims, make sure you get your priorities straight.

The inline-4 motor is peppy in nature and you would love to redline it whenever gotten a chance. However, it doesn’t possess the Mustang’s sonorous character that gave its identity in the first place. Nevertheless, the slick 6-speed manual is just a blessing in disguise for the purists. All in all, we really loved the engaging handling dynamics offered by the 2020 Ford Mustang and it scores the maximum points in this regard.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The 2020 Ford Mustang convertible can munch 20 miles in a gallon of fuel within the city limits. Get cruising on the highway and this number escalates to 28 MPG which is pretty impressive for its standards. With a combined mileage of 23 MPG, the Mustang barely manages to keep up with the standards set by the segment. Nevertheless, it doesn’t lag much behind either.

The Mustang lines up with the Camaro’s fuel economy figures as far as the combined mileage is concerned, however, the Camaro just manages to surpass the pony in the highway mileage figures. The Nissan 370Z stays at the last of this comparison due to the least fuel economy. The Bimmer, on the other hand, leads this department with the best fuel economy figures of the lot.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible Interior

8.0/10

Segregated in two trims, the base trim of the 2020 Ford Mustang comes with cloth-wrapped seats and the top-trim upgrades to the leather ones. However, we do not have any complaints with either seating surfaces. These seats are well cushioned and the bolsters surrounding it further enhance the driving experience.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible dashboard

Although there is a negligible cabin roll, for the little of it that creeps inside, the bolsters contain it pretty well. As per the segment standards, the Mustang offers good adjustability traits for the driver and the front passenger. The only difference between the two trims of the Mustang is the fact that while these adjustability traits are manual in the base trim, the top-trim offers electronic adjustment.
However, the same cannot be said about the build quality of the cabin as there are rattling noises at the dash that can upset your mood. The inferior plastics further add on to it and not to forget, a few panel gaps can be spotted here and there.

Unlike the front seats, the rear seats are basically useless in this convertible pony. The legroom is almost non-existent and the sloping roofline just ensures you won’t even dare to fit in the rear seats. If anything, the rear seats are no better than just a parcel shelf that can come in handy to store some extra items that don’t fit in the trunk.

The Mustang isn’t very generous when it comes to the passenger volume and loses out on this front to its rivals. Though we cannot comment on the Camaro, the Mustang’s larger windows add to the airy feel of the cabin as compared to the former. The Bimmer takes the lead here in this department with the maximum space of the lot, followed closely by the Nissan 370Z.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

While the base trim offers a standard 4.2-inch display to cater to the occupants’ needs, the top-trim “Ecoboost Premium” takes things up a notch with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system is pretty intuitive to use and also offers a vivid picture quality. However, the transitions between the menus could get laggy at times. Having said that, the key highlights associated with the infotainment of the 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible are:

  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot compatible with up to 10 devices
  • Sirius XM with 6-month All-Access subscription
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Alexa Voice Assistant
  • 9-speaker Audio system with built-in amplifier
  • 2 smart-charging USB Ports

What are the creature comforts on offer in the Ford Mustang Convertible?

Not just on the technology front, but the 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible also comes packed with a host of features pertaining to the comfort and convenience of the passengers as well. What further enhances the feel is the fact that most of the undermentioned features are offered as standard across both the trims.

If left out in the base trim, then Ford also offers a plethora of optional packages to compensate for the same. However, don’t forget that with every item you check, it gets reflected in the MSRP of the car. That said, some features that add to the oomph factor of the Mustang’s cabin are:

  • 6-way power-adjustable driver seat with power lumbar adjustability
  • Heated and cooled leather-trimmed front seats
  • Ambient lighting with MyColor®
  • Angled Brush Aluminum instrument panel trim
  • Bright-finish door speaker surrounds
  • Aluminum accelerator, brake and clutch pedals
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt/telescopic adjustment
  • Dual-zone electronic automatic climate control

What about utility?

Let’s face it, if you have your eyes set on a convertible muscle car, barely would you worry about its cargo capacity. Simply because the convertible roof takes up a considerable amount of trunk as compared to its corresponding coupe.

Treading on the same lines, the 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible offers a modest cargo capacity of 11.4 cu.ft. While the number may not be very impressive, there is only so much a Convertible could give you. However, when pitted against the competition, the Mustang surprises us with its best-in-class cargo capacity, well, almost!

The competition is clearly dwarfed by the Mustang’s gigantic (as per convertible standards) cargo capacity of 11.4 cu.ft. The BMW 230i convertible spices things up here with the maximum cargo capacity of the lot. The Nissan stays out of question here and locks itself at the third position behind the Bimmer and the Mustang.

Even after five decades of its tenure, the 2020 Ford Mustang remains reminiscent of the identical design cues that created the identity of its badge in the first place. Take the front for instance, the signature headlamps with the triple-LED stripes further crescented by the “pony” emblem ensure that you do not take the Mustang for any other car.

Moving on to the sides, the classic design cues bore by its forefathers back in the day, can still be spotted in the silhouette of the car with the long hood and a fastback-like crease adding more to its character. The sloping roofline cleanly blends into the C-pillar and makes sure you grab eyeballs everywhere you go.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible three quarter view

At the rear, the Mustang’s signature triple-LED amber taillights have been retained as it is with just a slight touch of modern technology. The upswept tail of the Mustang might slightly hinder the view at the back, but hey, its a muscle car, and it certainly looks like one. No arguments here. All in all, the Mustang has a unique road presence and certainly stands apart from the crowd. Moreover, now that the muscle cars are fading away slowly, the Mustang brings along a sense of awe and a peculiar style statement as well.

Talking numbers, the Mustang is the biggest of them all. It is longer, wider and is also taller than the competition here. The puny Nissan, as expected, isn’t very promising in terms of dimensions as it more of a compact sports car. The Camaro is the second-largest here, leaving the Bimmer for the third position, just ahead of the Nissan.

What are the eye-catching features in the Ford Mustang Convertible?

The 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible has been christened with a plethora of enhancements on the outside to make it stand apart from the crowd. Not just the aesthetics, but few of the exterior quirks also enhance the convenience factor too. Apart from its signature grille and the “pony” resting on the front grille, some other exterior features that add to the Mustang’s “muscle” character are:

  • 18-inch silver aluminum wheels
  • Dual Exhaust tips
  • Easy Fuel capless fuel filler
  • Daytime running lights
  • LED Fog Lamps
  • LED Headlights with LED signature lighting
  • LED front park turn lamps

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible Safety

9.9/10

With the 2020 iteration of the Ford Mustang convertible, a slew of standard features has been added to the already rich feature list. This inspires more confidence in the beginner drivers who straightaway want to step into the performance category. Now with the MyKey offered as standard, you won’t even worry about handing this beast over to your son as this feature enables you to keep a check on the performance of the vehicle. Apart from geo-tagging, the Mustang also offers the facility to put a limit on its top-speed.

The 2020 Ford Mustang is yet to go under the NHTSA and IIHS’s scanner to be tested for its build quality. However, the Mustang convertible has been stuffed with a plethora of safety features that set it apart from the lineup. Some of the key highlights of Mustang’s safety feature-list are:

  • 3-point safety belt restraint system for all seating positions
  • Glove-Box-Door-Integrated Knee Airbag
  • AdvanceTrac with Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Driver's knee airbag
  • Dual front airbags
  • Front-seat side-impact airbags
  • Personal Safety System for driver and front passenger
  • Safety Canopy side-curtain airbags
  • SOS Post-Crash Alert System
  • Individual Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Perimeter Alarm
  • Remote keyless entry
  • SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft System

Ford Mustang Convertible vs Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

Coming from the native manufacturers, both these cars have grown together over a period of time. What started as a battle between two American muscle cars changed when the Camaro shed flesh and weight, in order to be taken to the Nurburgring, losing all of its charms. Moreover, the puny windows of the Camaro is the biggest downside. Not only does it account for the nauseatic cabin, but it also hinders the visibility all around, unlike the Mustang. Furthermore, with the 2020 iteration of both models, the Mustang has now come head-to-head in terms of the equipment list, hence, proving itself to be a better deal than the Chevrolet Camaro.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

Ford Mustang Convertible vs BMW 230i Convertible

Taking the battle head-on with the Europeans, the Mustang just dwarfs the Bimmer in terms of dimensions, which also translates to the fact that the former has more road presence and a better stance as compared to the 230i. The Bimmer makes up for this by offering peppy performance and a better set of road manners but then again, misses out on the feature-list offered by the Mustang. Hence, it all boils down to your choice. Are you ready to compromise on the beefy muscular stance(Mustang) for a more dedicated roadster (230i)?

Ford Mustang Convertible vs Nissan 370Z Convertible

Apart from the same price bracket, both these vehicles are worlds apart from each other. While the Mustang follows a “bigger the better” ideology in its stance, the Nissan is a bit more conservative. This also translates to limited cabin space. The Mustang’s rear row might be impractical but the Nissan 370Z doesn't even have any. Also, the 370Z is the favored one for its more engaging handling dynamics and the Mustang remains a perfect highway cruiser with a hint of sportiness too. In terms of feature-list, both these contenders remain head-to-head with each other. Let’s also not forget the price tag that works in favor of the Mustang convertible.

2020 Ford Mustang Convertible Final Verdict

8.5/10

With the automotive market already trying to overpower the muscle car segment, there are only a handful of options in the market that you can ponder upon. The 2020 Ford Mustang, along with its signature identity and style statement, also offers a blend of various proportions that serves almost every purpose, be it performance or necessity. Now with the more economical EcoBoost motor, this Mustang can be ruthless on the roads yet friendly in your pocket. To sum it up, if you are looking for a sports car with muscular looks and still be able to live with it as a daily driver, look no further than the Mustang Convertible.

Cons - Small trunk.

I? enjoying the feeling of pressing on the clutch and manually shifting gears while driving. The paddle shifter gives more controls over shifting.Thank god my Ford Mustang has this option.

Toggle the switch and disappear

Pros - Handling, tire throttle connection, toggle switches for drive modes

Cons - Rear spoiler isn't standard, cloth seats, flat black side mirrors

The first time I took it to the route 26 twisties, I was wishing the road to never end. It sort of commits to the corners and hairpins even if the driver doesn't and right before you know it, you are up for the another bend. Not just this, acceleration in between is also encouraging and results in one of those positive responses and you know its asking for more probably.

Best for cruise nights

What do you call a car that can throw Texas vibes all over the place while driving because of its looks. Only if it was not enough, sporty driving performance comes to the rescue there and impeccably smooth suspension and ability to hit triple digits on speedo real quick is just another day for this beast in gleaming pretence. Not free from vibrations for sure and loses composure at higher speeds ...
