The Fusion has always been a part of the Amerian household. Ford has managed to gracefully age the Fusion with minimal upgrades. In its 2020 avatar, it looks as new as it ever has. The 2020 Ford Fusion is a clean mixture of practicality, fun, and comfort. The hybrid powertrain only adds to the practicality of the sedan.

The quiet and roomy interior of the Fusion is second to none. It still manages to have a pretty large trunk. It has been a strong one standing in the mid-size sedan segment since 2013. But that’s not the case in 2020 as it’s slipping behind. So, does Ford have what it takes to challenge the new lot of hybrids?

The Fusion is offered in three trims powered by a 2.0L hybrid inline four-pot. An 88kW electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack located at the rear end of the sedan. This setup gives a collective output of 188 hp and 129 lb-ft torque at a tempting price of $28,000. Let's see how it holds up.

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid is offered in three trims which are powered by a hybrid powerhouse. This includes a 2.0L naturally aspirated inline-four engine coupled to an 88 kW electric motor which collectively produces a modest 188 horses and 129 pound-feet of torque. The power is transferred to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox.

Ford has been generous to fill all the trims with class-leading features which includes a list of safety features that can be nitpicked according to your needs. It comes standard with LED headlamps and taillamps along with solar tinted glass. This feature package available for under $30K is impressive and gives the competition a run for the money.

2020 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Engine and Performance

All the 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid trims are powered by a 2.0L inline-four unit along with an electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. The system collectively produces 188 hp and 129 lb-ft of peak torque. This power is transmitted to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox which helps put down the collective power linearly.

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Engine

The battery back is located at the rear end which helps in weight distribution as well. Regenerative braking recharges the battery pack on the go and is also done when the Fusion drives only on gasoline. The Fusion is also available as a plug-in hybrid form with a bigger battery pack and an external charging port.

Honda Accord manages to chuck out the most power out of the lot, thanks to an efficient and low friction engine. It helps to reduce power loss through friction. Toyota Camry produces 200+ horses courtesy the largest engine of the chosen pack.

How quick is Ford's Hybrid off the line?

Ironically, hybrid cars are quicker in sprints than their non-hybrid versions. This is mainly due to the on-tap torque available via the electric motors. It is devoid of the impending lag to build up momentum. Torque is available as low as 0 RPM.

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Front View
2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid 0-60 MPH in just 9.0 sec.

The E-CVT transmission makes the acceleration much more linear and that accounts for less sprint time. The Fusion was not built for brutal acceleration and so the CVT makes a good cause for the car.

Honda Accord Hybrid is the quickest of the lot, even in Hybrid form. The Camry follows closely behind. Kia Optima comes in at a modest 8.5 seconds. The Accord weighs in at the least which makes it quick in the 0-60 run.

How well does the Fusion Hybrid handle?

The steering is sharp and responds quickly and precisely to driver inputs. With minimal body roll, thanks to the anti-roll bars, it is one of the most fun to drive sedans out there. Corners are a breeze in this. The rigid body structure gives it exceptional stability at high speeds as well. The suspension is well-tuned for a comfortable extended trip. Bumps and vibrations are smoothly muffled by the dampers.

This amazing driving experience makes it one of the very few well-rounded dynamic sedans out there. The added mass from the battery pack helps in making the car more nimble and responsive as the center of gravity gets lower than the non-hybrid variant.

How efficient is the braking system?

Hybridization affects the braking of the Ford Fusion. This is mainly because of the regenerative braking acting up which utilizes the friction from brake pads to recharge the electric motor. This makes the braking a bit lethargic but nothing major.

The rear brakes are larger in the Fusion than the rest as it helps in controlling the added rear weight. All of the cars in this category sacrifice on the braking front due to added gizmos for brake regeneration.

2020 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

Fuel efficiency is the prime reason for the conceptualization and production of hybrid powertrains. This setup helps lower the load on the gasoline engine and thus provide us with unreal efficiency figures.

Ford Fusion manages to give impressive numbers in spite of weighing in at the most. It also has the least powerful engine which puts it in an uneasy spot. But it still manages to provide us with a commendable 42 MPG.

Toyota Camry will drive the longest as it gives a combined 52 MPG which is a whopping 10 MPG more than the Ford. Honda Accord Hybrid comes in at a combined 48 MPG. We are impressed by the Camry which in spite of having a heavier boy manages to be the most efficient of the lot.

2020 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Interior

8.0/10

The interior is well laid out with a sensible amount of switches. It’s plain, simple and functional. The rotary gear shifter takes a bit of time getting used to for newbies. The seats are comfortable on both the rows with ample support for the occupants. The material quality is not up to mark on the base trim but as we go up, it improves.

That said, it surely has improved from the last iteration with chrome laden gauges and tactile switches for better feedback. Ford should have put in a little more effort for the base trim as it feels out of place. Soft-touch materials and leather trims upgrade the dull interior in upper trims.

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Seats
2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Front and Rear Seats

The front seats are the most comfortable ones on the inside. It is supportive and well-bolstered to hold you firmly with comfort. There are ample headroom and legroom in the front. The tall and wide doors make entry and exit easy and comfortable. The wide front windshield and narrow A-pillars provide excellent forward visibility.

The driver's seat is higher placed which also helps in outward visibility. The rear seats and cramped for a car this size. The sloping roofline gives it a shorter headroom which taller occupants might find uneasy. The seats come with cloth seats in light stone color. More customizations would require you to go up the ladder. Ford has been clever to position the lithium-ion battery pack below the second-row seats. This helps to provide us with the same amount of interior space as it’s non-hybrid variant.

What are the infotainment features available?

The infotainment system on the base trim is barebone with a stereo AM/FM compatible CD player. It has the more basic version of the SYNC interface with voice-activation and a 4.2 inch LCD screen.

It feels a bit outdated and the optional SYNC 3 infotainment system with a larger screen would be a sensible upgrade for this trim.

How much cargo can the Fusion Hybrid take?

The cargo space is impressive with 12 cubic feet of space to play around. The 60/40 rear split seats fold to give you a lot of cargo space when needed. The battery pack eats on the cargo space due to its position. This puts the Hybrid Ford in an unlikely position of having the least cargo volume of the lot.

We believe that Ford could have done better with the battery positioning to sustain cargo space as well.

Ford has managed to age the fusion well. Over the years not much has changed but the subtle changes do keep it in the grid. The design is sleek and simple. The now-standard LED taillights and halogen headlamps make their presence felt. The 17- inch aluminum wheels are a neat touch to improve the overall appearance of the car.

Ford Fusion is a long car that takes it to the full-sized sedan category. The design is simple but has aged well over the years. Ford has offered eight attractive color options to mask its age. The slanting roofline and Aston martin-like front grille make it stand out from the crowd. The five-bar grille introduced last year has been carried over.

Kia Optima provides a compact body form which enables it to be maneuverable in tight spots. The hybridization has not caused an increase in curb weight as feared. All the automakers have done a fine job of maintaining the trajectory of vehicles in motion. Ford Fusion has the longest wheelbase of the lot which enables it to house a longer wheelbase. Don’t let the dimensions fool you, as the Ford is a very nimble car.

2020 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Competition

Ford Fusion Hybrid vs Honda Accord Hybrid

Ford is long known for its heavy-duty commercial vehicles but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a threshold for sedans. The Ford Fusion is a blend of the upmarket interior, composed ride quality, and a geeky feature list. The driving dynamics it offers is unlike any other hybrid sedan. On the other hand, Accord delivers an amplified version of the same. The Accord can muster 34 more ponies than the fusion. The shoppers favoring efficiency overpower are in for a treat as the Accord’s got an edge here too. So, as a complete package, the 2020 Ford Fusion doesn’t please us even in the hybrid state.

2020 Honda Accord Hybrid
2020 Honda Accord Hybrid

Ford Fusion Hybrid vs Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Japanese are very good at what they do. The same can be seen in the cars produced by them as well. It has the biggest engine in the lot which enables it to produce a much better power output. Camry gives an impressive combined 52 miles to the gallon which is by far the most which we have seen from a hybrid sedan. The car handles like a breeze and is much more superior in the same from the Fusion. This wholesome package at a mere premium of $250 is quite the steal and is our choice of the two.

2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid
2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Ford Fusion Hybrid vs Kia Optima Hybrid

Kia Optima is the only hybrid in the set which comes with a 6-Speed automatic transmission. It produces the least power of the lot but with a whopping 271 twisties is the torque monster of the lot. It is due to the larger battery pack. It has marginally better interior space as well. But the Fusion is a better car when it comes to performance and driving dynamics. It has minimal body roll which keeps it planted in corners. The wider picture sways us towards the Fusion and will surely be our choice of the two.

2020 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid is a practical, spacious and nimble car. The seating is comfortable and we dare say one of the best among the lot. The powertrain is potent but the engine attached to it doesn’t impress at all. The 2.0L pot is just not enough to push the sedan when needed. The battery pack helps to an extent but isn’t enough to lock horns with the likes of Honda Accord Hybrid. When we compare it with the competition, it fails miserably. We would choose the much more compelling Honda Accord Hybrid over the Fusion Hybrid any day.
