The quiet and roomy interior of the Fusion is second to none. It still manages to have a pretty large trunk. It has been a strong one standing in the mid-size sedan segment since 2013. But that’s not the case in 2020 as it’s slipping behind. So, does Ford have what it takes to challenge the new lot of hybrids?

The Fusion is offered in three trims powered by a 2.0L hybrid inline four-pot. An 88kW electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack located at the rear end of the sedan. This setup gives a collective output of 188 hp and 129 lb-ft torque at a tempting price of $35,000. Let's see how it holds up.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi is offered in a single trim which is powered by a hybrid powerhouse. This includes a 2.0L naturally aspirated inline-four engine coupled to an 88 kW electric motor which collectively produces a modest 188 horses and 129 pound-feet of torque. The battery pack is rated at 9 kWh. The power is transferred to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox.

Ford has been generous to fill all the trims with class-leading features which includes a list of safety features that can be nitpicked according to your needs. It comes standard with LED headlamps and taillamps along with solar tinted glass. This feature package available for under $30K is impressive and gives the competition a run for the money.

Which 2020 Ford Fusion Energi trim should you go for?

The only trim available as a Plug-In Hybrid is the Titanium which is packed with features. It makes up for a good overall package of $35,000.

All the 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid trims are powered by a 2.0L inline four-pot along with an electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. The system collectively produces 188 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. This is transmitted to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox which helps put down the collective power linearly.

The battery back is located at the rear end which helps in weight distribution as well. Regenerative braking recharges the battery pack on the go and is also done when the Fusion drives only on gasoline. The Fusion is also available as a plug-in hybrid form with a bigger battery pack and an external charging port.

*2019 data used for comparison purposes

Kia Optima is the most powerful of the lot in the hybrid state. It is also the only one that is coupled with a 6-Speed Automatic Transmission. Chevrolet Volt is the least powerful as it is powered by a small engine and a small battery as well.

How quick is the Fusion Energi off the line?

Ironically, the hybrid cars are quicker in sprints than their non-hybrid versions. This is mainly due to the on-tap torque available via the electric motors. It is devoid of the impending lag to build up momentum. Torque is available as low as 0 RPM.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi touches 0-60 MPH in just 8.5 sec

The E-CVT transmission makes the acceleration much more linear and that accounts for less sprint time. The Fusion was not built for brutal acceleration and so the CVT makes a good cause for the car.

Toyota Prius is the one that is not serious about the sprint. It calmly crosses the 60MPH mark in 10.7 seconds. Having the heaviest battery pack of the lot also contributes to the slow timing. The remaining three have similar timings despite having varying power bands.

How well does the Fusion Energi handle?

The steering is sharp and responds quickly and precisely to driver inputs. With minimal body roll thanks to anti-roll bars, it is one of the most fun-loving sedans out there. Corners are a breeze in this. The rigid body structure gives it exceptional stability at high speeds as well. The suspension is well-tuned for a comfortable extended trip. Bumps and vibrations are smoothly muffled by the dampers.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi Rear view

This amazing driving experience makes it one of the very few well-rounded dynamic sedans out there. The added mass from the battery pack helps in making the car more nimble and responsive as the center of gravity gets lower than the non-hybrid variant.

How well does the Fusion Energi Titanium stop?

Hybridization affects the braking of the Ford Fusion. This is mainly because of the regenerative braking acting up which utilizes the friction from brake pads to recharge the electric motor. This makes the braking a bit lethargic but nothing major.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi's Front Brake is 11.8 in.

Stop and go traffic doesn’t feel fidgety and even with the added mass, it manages to stop linearly and safely.

The rear brakes are larger in the Fusion than the rest as it helps in controlling the added rear weight. Regenerative Braking is the reason for a reduction in the brake rotor size for all the sedans.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi Sedan Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Fuel efficiency is the prime reason for the conceptualization and production of hybrid powertrains. This setup helps lower the load on the gasoline engine and thus provide us with unreal efficiency figures.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi can charge its battery pack in around seven hours

Ford Fusion manages to give impressive numbers in spite of weighing in at the most. It also has the least powerful engine which puts it in an uneasy spot. But it still manages to provide us with a commendable 42 MPG.

The 2020 Ford Fusion Energi comes with a standard 110 V outlet which can charge its battery pack in around seven hours. An optional 220 V charging outlet reduced the time to 2.5 hours which can be opted with the car. It charges decently for a midsize sedan and with provides a decent driving range as well.

The bigger battery helps Toyota Prius outshine the rest in terms of range. It travels the longest followed by the Chevy Volt. Ford Fusion and Kia Optima return similar numbers.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi Sedan Interior

7.5/10

The interior is well laid out with a sensible amount of switches. It’s plain, simple and functional. The rotary gear shifter takes a bit of time getting used to for newbies. The seats are comfortable on both the rows with ample support for the occupants. The material quality is not up to mark on the base trim but as we go up, it improves.

That said, it surely has improved from the last iteration with chrome laden gauges and tactile switches for better feedback. Ford should have put in a little more effort for the base trim as it feels out of place. Soft-touch materials and leather trims upgrade the dull interior in upper trims.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi Rear Seats

The front seats are the most comfortable ones on the inside. It is supportive and well-bolstered to hold you firmly with comfort. There is ample headroom and legroom in the front. The tall and wide doors make entry and exit easy and comfortable. The wide front windshield and narrow A-pillars provide excellent forward visibility.

The driver's seat is higher placed which also helps in outward visibility. The rear seats and cramped for a car this size. The sloping roofline gives it a shorter headroom which taller occupants might find uneasy. The seats come with cloth seats in light stone color. More customizations would require you to go up the ladder. Ford has been clever to position the lithium-ion battery pack below the second-row seats. This helps to provide us with the same amount of interior space as it’s non-hybrid variant.

What are the Infotainment offerings?

The infotainment system on the base trim is barebone with a stereo AM/FM compatible CD player. It has the more basic version of the SYNC interface with voice-activation and a 4.2 inch LCD screen. It feels a bit outdated and the optional SYNC 3 infotainment system with a larger screen would be a sensible upgrade for this trim.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi has a 4.2 in. LCD Screen

How much cargo can the Energi take?

The cargo space is impressive with 12 cubic feet of space to play around. The 60/40 rear split seats fold to give you a lot of cargo space when needed. The battery pack eats on the cargo space due to its position. This puts the Hybrid Ford in an unlikely position of having the least cargo volume of the lot.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi has a boot space of 8.2 cu ft.

We believe that Ford could have done better with the battery positioning to sustain cargo space as well.

Hybrid powertrains take away cargo volume due to the battery placement. Now we have to see as of which setup helps retain most of the modified space. Toyota Prius impresses by providing the most cargo volume despite having the largest battery pack of the lot. Chevy follows behind with 10.6 cubic feet.

Ford has managed to age the fusion well. Over the years not much has changed but the subtle changes do keep it in the grid. The design is sleek and simple. The now-standard LED taillights and halogen headlamps makes its presence felt. The 17 in. aluminum wheels are a neat touch to improve the overall appearance of the car.

2020 Ford Fusion Energi Left Side View

Ford Fusion is a long car that takes it to the full-sized sedan category. The design is simple but has aged well over the years. Ford has offered eight attractive color options to mask its age. The slanting roofline and Aston martin-like front grille makes it stand out from the crowd. The five-bar grille introduced last year has been carried over.

Ford has souped-up the safety on the fusion with the addition of FORD CO-PILOT 360 PROTECT as standard on all models. This means that features like automatic emergency system, blind spot information, lane-keeping system, etc. comes as standard from the base up.

A FORD PASS connect app allows us to use multiple features like start/stop, lock/unlock, vehicle location and even fuel level. Ford has been interactive with providing reward points for using the application in your Fusion Hybrid. These points can be used for discounts on vehicle servicing at any Ford Dealership. Well played Ford!

2020 Ford Fusion Energi Sedan Competition

Ford Fusion Energi vs Chevrolet Volt

Chevrolet Volt has been the go-to sedan in the Hybrid category. It manages to provide more range for the electric motor despite have a smaller battery pack. There is a host of advanced features in the Volt which works in harmony with the hybrid setup. It is one of those non-boring hybrid cars. But it is a bummer than Chevrolet didn’t upgrade the volt for 2020. This is where the Fusion Plug-In Hybrid surpasses it by making itself better and coming in strong for 2020. We would take the Fusion over Volt for the support it guarantees.

2020 Chevrolet Volt

Ford Fusion Energi vs Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid

Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid is the practical hybrid of the lot as it succeeds in providing a practical sedan in spite of the added battery pack and its complications. Optima has a 60/60 split seat setup to regain lost cargo space when required. It is much more powerful and comes in at a cheaper price. It looks the part as well and is filled with features. Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid is our choice of the lot.

2020 Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid

Ford Fusion Energi vs Toyota Prius

The most reliable hybrid of the lot, Toyota Prius is the car that started it all. It has been in the scene for the longest which had given it a lot of time to improve and rectify shortcomings, and it did so. The 2020 Toyota Prius now has the longest range without losing on the cargo space. It is much cheaper than the Fusion which adds up to the value. We will take the Toyota Prius over Ford Fusion as it simply gives a better value for the money.

2020 Toyota Prius

2020 Ford Fusion Energi Sedan Final Verdict

Ford Fusion Energi has held onto its grounds for a long time now. Ford is one of the few manufacturers who are updating the plug-In Hybrid line up for 2020. But the fact that competition has caught up quickly and in some cases surpassed it makes the case rather doubtful. It is an all-rounder which has aged quite well but we would take the much more technologically advanced and better performing Toyota Prius over the Ford Fusion Energi.

With the increasing demand for hybrids and EV's, plug in hybrid was the best choice. To have a car which can run on gasoline and at the same time charges itself to go beyond EPA mileage standards is turning out to be great. The best part, we can even charge it tio make sure we always have reserve power. With hybrids in general, we can go a long way before needing to gas up. Brilliant initiative.
