If there ever was a pickup that was a total working mule but also formidable to let loose, it has got to be the Ford F-150 SuperCrew. Its agility is surprisingly great for a pickup truck without affecting its primary purpose as a cargo hauler. Since Ford has remained consistent with the F-150 for upgrades over the years, it has all the features you might expect from a crew cab pickup in 2020. With exceptional safety scores and a lineup to cater to every customer, it is hard to knock it off its position as the best-selling pickup in the USA.

Expert Review

Overall Rating

Consider for example all the choices of powertrain options. The standard 3.3-liter V6 is a total delight but the others that include a 2.7-liter V6, 3.5-liter V6, and 5.0-liter V8 take the excitement to a whole new level besides improving usability. These more capable engines also get a more modern 10-speed automatic unit to match.

That doesn't mean that the F-150 has it any easy for it. Over time, its Chevrolet rival has had time to catch up, both In terms of comfort and power. Moreover, the Ram has stepped up the game with the sports car-like 1500. Setting a new standard for performance and a few top-notch features unheard of in this segment, let's dive in to observe if the king of pickups still retains its top spot this year.

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Features

10/10

The SuperCrew variant of the Ford F-150 is available in as many as five trims. No doubt that the Raptor delivers the most fun when out on the trail. Still, you can never go wrong with the Lariat or King Ranch if a work truck with a touch of opulence. The base-level XL trim is not disappointing, either. Starting at 35 grand, it comes with an efficient powertrain and serves as an excellent weekday hauler.

Additionally, prospective buyers can also choose from several different packages to enhance the interior and exterior of the truck. A 3.3-liter turbocharged with a six-speed automatic transmission is standard on all variants. All variants also get rear-wheel drive as standard while the all-wheel drivetrain is available across the range. Other options include features like an 8-inch touchscreen, cruise control, and a powered moonroof.

What would we recommend?

All variants of the F-150 SuperCrew offer practical value for the money they charge. So the only concern remains is the level of elegance you desire. That way the King Ranch is the variant to opt for. It features several upscale features that make this Ford a lot more premium.

9.0/10

The many variants of the Ford F-150 SuperCrew are all powered by a 3.3-liter V6 engine capable of producing 290 hp and 265 lb.-ft. torque. That V6 comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission which either works the rear wheels or all the wheels of this Ford. The rear-wheel drivetrain is available as standard while the all-wheel-drive unit is available as an option on all variants of the F-150 SuperCrew.

If that doesn’t cut it for you, though, then fret not as this Ford is available with a wide variety of powertrain options as well. There’s the 2.7-liter V6, a 3.5-liter V6, and a top-of-the-line 5.0-liter V8. All these optional engine choices also come paired with a more advanced ten-speed automatic transmission.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Crew Cab’s 4.3-liter V6 might be the biggest in this segment but at 305 hp, it is the Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab which is the most powerful. Even the 3.3-liter V6 of the F-150 SuperCrew manages to overpower the bigger 4.3-liter V6 of that Chevy.

How fast is the Ford F-150 SuperCrew?

There is a reason why all F-150s are known to be the sports cars of pickup trucks. The 3.3-liter V6 of the Ford F-150 SuperCrew makes enough power and torque for enhanced towing, hauling, and acceleration.

Its six-speed automatic transmission ensures seamless shifts all the time. Even with the all-wheel-drive variants, most of the engine’s power is sent to the rear two wheels. This makes the F-150 SuperCrew plenty enjoyable while getting off the line.

2020 Ford F-150 Super Crew 0-60 MPH In just 7.2 sec

At 265 lb.-ft., however, the 3.3-liter V6 of this F-150 SuperCrew is the least torquey. All other optional powertrains make significantly higher amounts of power which make this pickup from Ford even more engaging. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 and 5.0-liter V8 both produce about 400 lb.-ft. torque, while the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 simply shocks with its 470 lb.-ft. torque.

The Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab is the most powerful pickup of this segment. Consequently, it is also the quickest to get to the 60 mph mark. But the Ford F-150 SuperCrew comfortably manages to catch up to that Ram in a quarter-mile race. This results from the fact that this F-150 is not only lighter but its V6 also pushes out peak torque relatively early on the powerband.

What about the braking performance of the Ford F-150 SuperCrew?

Braking on the Ford F-150 SuperCrew is as good as can be on a pickup. The pedal is nice and firm and returns adequate feel. Even the brakes bite down with requisite force to effectively cut down this pickups speed.

2020 Ford F-150 Super Crew Front Brake is 13.8 in.

The standard pre-collision assist with automatic braking further ensures improved safety for the driver and other occupants. But the F-150 is a pickup after all, so the weight naturally becomes a problem. Even other SUVs can easily prove themselves superior to the F-150 for braking performance. Nevertheless, this truck does well enough for its class.

All pickups in this segment get more or less similarly sized brakes except for the Ram 1500 Tradesman QuadCab. It is the heaviest of all pickups. Likewise, its brakes are also the biggest. On the other end, the F-150 SuperCrew is the lightest truck of this lineup. Hence, it is also the quickest to come to a halt.

What about its handling and driving dynamics?

Pickups are meant not to carve corners but comfortably carry people and cargo around and the F-150 SuperCrew is no exception. Its sheer size and weight should deter you from throwing it aggressively in and out of tight turns but if you do, this Ford will still manage to return the favor.

Its steering is precise and keeps you informed of what the wheels are doing. Even the standard suspension setup has been kept on the firmer side. So, yes, this Ford manages to tackle curves a lot better than any other pickup.

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Front View

But that is about it for the F-150 SuperCrew. Its overall length and long wheelbase can be unnerving around sharp bends. What this Ford can do a lot better though is travel where there are no roads. It’s high ground clearance and wider track make the F-150 SuperCrew an adept off-roader.

Does the Ford F-150 compromise on utility?

The standard 3.3-liter V6 of the Ford F-150 SuperCrew makes enough power to enable this pickup to comfortably tow and carry out your everyday gigs. But at 265 lb.-ft., that 3.3-liter V6 is the underachiever as compared to what the other powertrain options have to offer.

For starters, all other optional engines come equipped with a 10-speed automatic gearbox which is a lot more modern and suits this pickup’s capabilities a lot more than the aged six-speed unit. Then, even the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 manages to throw 400 lb.-ft. torque for even higher towing capabilities.

Nothing though can match what the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 has to offer. It is capable of making 470 lb.-ft. torque which is simply best-in-class. Even the brawny 5.0-liter V8 is no match to that 3.5-liter V6 as the V8 puts out the same amount of torque as the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6.

The F-150 SuperCrew is undoubtedly a capable pickup. It simply impresses with its towing and hauling capabilities when paired to the standard 3.3-liter V6 even. All other engine choices further up this Ford’s game to undermine the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Work Truck CrewCab’s capabilities too.

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Ford equipped the F-150 SuperCrew with the 3.3-liter V6 for a reason which is all-around drivability and practicality. Sure this V6 takes away some of the F-150’s potential but makes up for it by offering exceptional efficiency. While towing and hauling is only slightly affected, the difference in MPG ratings is striking. None of the other optional engine choices are quite as fuel-efficient as the base 3.3-liter V6. It uses Ford's revolutionary EcoBoost technology to make the most of every bit of gas.

Even this SuperCrew’s 26.0-gallon fuel tank further pushes efficiency. While you may get much better mileage out of the Diesel options, going for the gas engines doesn't seem like a bad deal either.

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Interior

9.0/10

The F-150 SuperCrew’s large exterior isn’t just for show. It is equally big on the inside too. There’s plenty of space inside the cabin for passengers in the front row and back as well. Its seats too are large and wide and very well accommodating. They provide the kind of support needed by occupants over long commutes.

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Front Seats

What also makes this Ford a pleasant pickup is the level of insulation and quality of material used in the cabin. Surely, the F-150 SuperCrew feels fairly premium for its price. At the same time, the wide windows do well to provide a clear view of what lies on the other side.

The Ford F-150 may not be as heavy as the rest of the pickups in this class but is in no way small. In fact, its wheelbase is the longest in this segment. As a result, it is the most accommodating of all. Even the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Work Truck CrewCab, which has a wheelbase longer than the F-150 SuperCrew, is not as comfortable for passengers in the second row.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The only chink in the spacious and well-laid-out cabin of the Ford F-150 SuperCrew is its infotainment unit. It can be a bit laggy at times which can cause frustration for the user. Other than that, most variants of this pickup include an 8-inch touchscreen which further elevates the elegance of the cabin. The technological features aboard this Ford’s infotainment unit are:

The Ford F-150 is a big and boxy pickup unlike any other. While its wide grille looks imposing, the tall stance underscores the F-150’s character. Even the flared fenders add to the overall bulk. The entire profile is packed with straight lines and right angles.

The Ford F-150 easily manages to stand out in this lineup of multi-purpose pickups. It has a longer wheelbase than most other competitors and is also the longest overall. No pickup, though, is as humongous as the Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab. Not only is it the heaviest but also the tallest and widest. Still it is not quite as accommodating as the F-150 SuperCrew.

What are those eye catching features?

The various variants of the Ford F-150 have just as many appearances to guarantee exclusivity. Regardless, the most common exterior features included in all variants are:

  • DRLs
  • Two-bar style grille with nostrils

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Safety

9.0/10

Both the NHTSA and IIHS have given the Ford F-150 SuperCrew above average ratings for its safety. This Ford not only manages to provide sufficient protection under a crash but also comes equipped with the following features for prevention beforehand:

  • Rear view camera with Dynamic Hitch Assist
  • AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control
  • 6 Airbags
  • Curve control
  • ABS
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Ford F-150 SuperCrew vs. Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab

This Ram 1500 has managed to establish itself as the luxury car of pickups and that too for a price less than the Ford F-150. So in a way the Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab is the better choice of the two. But a pickup is meant for a whole different purpose and that is where the F-150 SuperCrew overshadows the Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab.

Ford F-150 SuperCrew vs. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Work Truck Crew Cab

The Chevy Silverado 1500 Work Truck Crew Cab offers more potential than the F-150 SuperCrew. It is also less expensive than the F-150. These factors do make that Chevy a more feasible option than the Ford. However, the F-150 SuperCrew provides better value for money. It is a lot more passenger friendly and noticeably more efficient. Also it is only slightly behind the Silverado 1500 Work Truck Crew Cab in terms of usability.

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Final Verdict

9.0/10

The Ford F-150 strikes a great balance between work and play. It is practical and efficient and at the same time well-equipped to take on everything you are willing to throw at it. Yes, it is on the more expensive side of things but totally justifies its price tag. The other less costly pickups do one thing better than the other, while this Ford excels in every aspect.

FAQs

What trims is the Ford F-150 Supercrew available in?

The Ford F-150 is available in five different trim levels. The XL starts out as the bare-bones level with very few features while the top-level Limited trim gets you a lot of premium features at a decent price point.

Is the Ford F-150 Lariat an expensive truck to maintain?

Not at all. Ford offers lucrative insurance and maintenance plans with every F-150 Lariat. These make it a lot easier to own this truck long term than its Chevrolet and Ram counterparts. As special attention is paid on the reliability and build quality of recent F-150s, you don't need to worry about any of these breaking down anytime soon, either.

What safety ratings did the F-150 get from the NHTSA?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded an overall 5-star rating to the new Ford F-150 SuperCrew. It also gains near-perfect scores in individual categories, with the only exception being the Rollover rating, which has four stars.

Is the F-150 getting more expensive with time?

The Ford F-150 has a steady slope of increasing MSRP over recent years, and with good reason. Its evolution is only going to prove better for Ford's future, as more premium features and better drivetrain packages are available for the F-150. Now that a hybrid trim is also in the works, it is a great choice even for those inclined towards more focus towards the environment.

"Luxury on wheels"

Limited, truck priced close to seventy grand. It seems a lot at first glance for a truck but when we take a close look at what it offers things start to make sense. The driving experience is no different than any F-150; what makes it special are the features and attention to detail. It is more like a luxurious SUV but with the capabilities of a truck, exactly what I wanted.

I was using an SUV for towing trailers and stuff until it started to break down regularly. Maintenance was already a huge pain and now it was not even manageable. One of my friends suggested a truck and I was not thrilled with option. They never appealed to me, don’t know why but they never did. But SUV was no longer an option too and I was in crisis. Ford and people say that F150 is a machine that is very capable and I second that but they also claim that the truck is fuel-efficient. That part is what I have an issue with because mine has been chugging oil like a drunkard drink alcohol.
