The Ford Ecosport has been an absolute blockbuster in the Asian markets, and that was the principal factor that Ford launched this pint-sized crossover in the USA in order to try its luck in the mini crossover segment.

Launched in the year 2018, it's been just three years since Ecosports' run in the states, and in the meantime, the crossover has received a fair share of updates. It was just in 2020 when the Ecosport underwent some minor cosmetic and feature list refurbishments. As a result, the 2021 Ford Ecosport will be a carryover model as the company will not introduce any changes to it

The 2021 Ford Ecosport is expected to arrive at the dealerships during the third quarter of 2020. Yet, there are chances that this timeline may get distorted due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The prices for the 2021 Ford Ecosport will initiate at $19,995.

Settling at such a servile price tag, the Ford Ecosport is definitely one hell of a bargain. Yet there are some other companies that offer a similar bundle of joy at a similar price tag. With rivals such as the Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, and Mazda CX-3, will the Ecosport be able to attain prosperity in 2021? Scroll down to find out.

The base trim of the 2021 Ford Ecosport comes by the name S. At a price of $19,995, this trim offers a decent package of features such as a 4.2-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system, 6 speakers, and 4-way manual adjustable front seats.

Next up is the SE trim that comes at an MSRP of $23,450. This trim offers several worthy upgrades over the base S trim. Some of the upgrades include a 6.5-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, and a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

Moving up the trim ladder is the SES trim that comes at a price of $27,380 and gets a standard AWD drivetrain. This trim underscores upgrades such as a bigger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment panel, 7 speakers, a number of additional driver assistance features, and leather bits here and there in the cabin.

The top of the line trim of the 2021 Ford Ecosport goes by the name Titanium and comes at a price of $26,625. With features such as full leather upholstery, 10 speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, sliding armrest, and much more, this is the best looking and feeling trim of the Ecosport you can get.

2021 Ford EcoSport Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Ford is one of the oldest automobile manufacturers in the world. The brand has played a key role in “making America great” with its prodigious and zealous gifts to the world of automobiles. The auto-marque is renowned worldwide for its reliability and dependability. However, the Ecosport is currently the cheapest model of Ford. So now the question remains - are cheaper Fords just as reliable as the more expensive ones? Let's find out.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

Though there are a number of ways and techniques for deriving the actual reliability and ownership experience of a vehicle, one of the most trusted ways is to call attention to what the JD Power says about it. The JD Power Report gives ratings to vehicles on certain parameters like the Quality, Driving experience, resale value, etc. The ratings are mainly based on reviews by car-owners.

Speaking of this baby Ford, the 2020 Ford Ecosport bagged a total score of 78 out of a maximum 100, which does not happen to be impressive, yet a decent score. Below is a further breakdown of this score:

  • Quality and reliability: 74 out of 100
  • Driving Experience: 80 out of 100
  • Resale: 79 out of 100
  • Dealership Experience: 78 out of 100

Since the 2021 Ford Ecosport will be a carryover model, we expect the same score to imply on the new model as well.

State

Arizona

$17,563

California

$17,405

Florida

$17,532

Michigan

$16,936

New Jersey

$16,927

Car prices vary from state to state all across the US. The main reasons being the different levels of state taxes as well as the destination charges and dealer discounts. The price of the Ford Ecosport is the same everywhere, and pretty less than the MSRP. This implies that you can avail of some serious discounts on the Ecosport.

Speaking of the ownership costs, the Ford Ecosport seeks a total of around 35,273USD over a span of 5 years. This amount includes a number of costs such as insurance, taxes and dealership charges, depreciation, repairs, fuel, financing, etc.

Warranty

The warranty package that the company offers with the Ecosport, cannot be really calculated as alluring. Though the fact is quite clear that the Ecosport is the cheapest Ford offering, and it won’t be getting an extensive warranty package like the other expensive models, yet the available package does not seem justified either. The warranty coverage of the Ford Ecosport includes:

Criteria

Period

Limited Warranty cover

3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever is earlier

Powertrain warranty cover

5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever is earlier

Complimentary maintenance package

N/A

Most of the rivals in the segment offer a much better warranty package than Ford does in case of the Ecosport. The biggest downside to this warranty package is that it neither offers any complimentary maintenance package, nor roadside assistance. These shortcomings really make a big difference in comparison to what is on offer with the rivals, and can often serve as a deal-breaker as well.

2021 Ford EcoSport Buying Advice

Though all the trims of the 2021 Ford Ecosport offer handsome value for money, yet our pick would be the SES trim. The SES trim, at a difference of $6000 from the base S trim (AWD) offers a lot of worthy upgrades such as a bigger 8-inch touchscreen display, partial leather upholstery, silver-painted roof rack side rails, and a number of driver-assistance features.

Is buying a used Ford Ecosport a good idea?

It is always a sensible decision to buy a used car, as it saves you a lot of money while giving you a larger selection of options within your price range. Moreover, when you buy a used car, you do not take a hit on the depreciation factor.

The Ford Ecosport first hit the U.S. shores in the year 2018, and the crossover has not really received any such significant changes since then. So in case you are looking to get a used Ecosport, we recommend you go for the 2018 model.

The reason being, that you’d be able to save much more bucks on a model with an older manufacturing date, and since it's been just 2 years since its debut, the vehicle will most likely be in an almost new condition only. Moreover, since the Ecosport has not received many changes, you won’t be missing out on any prompt features either.

2021 Ford EcoSport Engine and Performance

6.4/10

The new 2021 Ecosport will offer the same performance as the 2020 model since there are no changes taking place here. This implies that the 2021 Ford Ecosport will also offer two engine options to choose from.

The standard powertrain comes in the form of a petite 1.0L EcoBoost 3-cylinder engine that belts out 123 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 125 lb.ft. @ 3500 rpm. This powertrain feels deficient in terms of grunt. Though it’s fine for city runs, but out on the freeway, this mill runs out of intensity pretty quickly and does not offer ample passing power.

The second powertrain option is a 2.0L 4-pot that’s good for a much better 166 hp and a peak torque of 149 lb.-ft. This powertrain setup makes the Ecosport the highest power packing vehicle amongst its closest competitors, and we SERIOUSLY RECOMMEND you to opt for this engine only.

Whether you go for the underpowered 1.0L 3-cylinder engine or the bigger and better 2.0L 4-pot, what you’ll find consummating the transmission duties in the Ecosport is a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Ford swapped the original Selectshift dual-clutch gearbox of the Ecosport with a smoother and more precise Powershift 6-speed automatic transmission in the year 2020. The transmission setup routes all the power to the front wheels of the Ecosport unless you choose the optional AWD drivetrain.

2021 Ford Ecosport Acceleration And Braking Performance

The Ford Ecosport, in its base avatar, with a 1.0L 3-cylinder engine, takes 11.4 seconds in order to sprint from 0-60 mph. Swap this 1.0L engine with the more powerful 2.0L 4-pot and the Ecosport can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 10.4 seconds.

With this engine, the Ecosport clocks the quarter of a mile lap in 16.5 seconds, which again happens to be an average figure. The Ford Ecosport is the slowest vehicle in the class in terms of acceleration. Consider the top speed fixture, and the Ecosport loses out once again with the least in class top speed figure of 110 mph.

The Ford Ecosport, with its 2.0L Inline-4 engine, may have the best in class power figures, yet when it comes to accelerating, it is the laziest crossover in the segment. The focal reason behind this lethargy is the great heft that the motor has to pull. All the other rivals offer a much better power to weight ratio than the Ecosport and thus perform better when pulling off the line.

Speaking of the braking arrangement, the Ford Ecosport gets 12.2-inch brake rotors on the front and 11.8-inchers towards the rear. Together this arrangement can make the Ecosport decelerate from 60-0 mph in a distance of 125 feet, which happens to be a respectable figure, considering the Ecosport is the heaviest vehicle in the segment.

2021 Ford EcoSport Fuel Economy

7.9/10

Since there are absolutely no changes on the mechanical front for the 2021 Ford Ecosport, and it is essentially a carryover model only, the 2021 Ecosport will make up for an identical level of fuel-efficiency as the mpg figures of the 2020 Ecosport.

The Ford Ecosport with its base 1.0L 3-cylinder engine returns a city/highway/combined mpg of 27/29/28. Bring the bigger and more potent 2.0L 4-pot engine into the picture and the mpg figures alter to 23 in the city, 29 on the highway, and 25 combined.

The Ford Ecosport’s mpg figures are totally at par with the segment standard. Moreover, the Ecosport gets one of the most cavernous fuel tanks in the segment, thus offering better overall range figures. However, the Mazda CX-3 emerges as the ultimate winner here with the best in class mpg figures and the biggest fuel tank.

2021 Ford EcoSport Interior

7.2/10

The Ecosport is the cheapest offering from the house of Ford, and surely does feel like one. As it's a cheap family crossover, the quality of materials used on the inside is nothing to talk about. The plastics are hard and the car overall does have some rough edges to it. However, the upper trims do offer some leather bits here and there.

Speaking of the space factor, well that’s a forte, the Ecosport performs well in. The crossover packs in ample space to make all the occupants feel comfortable and at ease during extended travelling hours. Moreover, sitting in an Ecosport accentuates the SUV vibes, owing to the high seating position, large windshield, and wide windows.

Talking about the ride quality of the Ford Ecosport, well the crossover absorbs most of the moderate bumps and breaks. Yet, drive it over a patch of bad pavement and the ride tends to get choppy, transmitting sharp whacks inside the cabin. The insulation inside the Ecosport is decent and keeps most of the road and wind noise at bay. However, it’s the engine noise that can pester your conversations.

How’s the 2021 Ford Ecosport’s infotainment system?

All the trims of the Ford Ecosport get the auto marque’s prodigious SYNC 3 infotainment system. However, it's the screen size that varies with your choice of trim. The base S trim gets a 4.2-inch touchscreen panel, the mid-spec SE trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen panel, and the top SES and Titanium trims get a large 8-inch display.

The screen sizes may vary, yet they all get the job done. Regardless of their size, all the display panels inside the Ecosport are big and clear in terms of visibility. All sizes of display showcase the vital information in the form of crisp and clean graphics that are easy to navigate through. Some of the most prominent standard infotainment features of the Ford Ecosport includes:

  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility
  • 2 USB ports and one 12-volt outlet in the front
  • 6 speakers
  • 8” Touchscreen System with Navigation
  • Ford Pass connect
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • SiriusXM satellite radio

2021 Ford EcoSport Exterior

5.5/10

The Ford Ecosport received some cosmetic upgrades in the year 2020, and the same elements are bound to get carried forward to the year 2021. For a start, the front grille of the Ecosport was made bigger, bolder, more upright, and more in line with the bigger SUVs from the “Blue-oval”.

Apart from that, some other visual enhancements were made that lent this SUV a more aggressive and dedicated look. However, one of the major pitfalls for Ecosport's design language comes in the form of headlights. The Ecosport, in an eon of LED headlamps, is still stuck on to the orthodox halogen lights.

The Ford Ecosport is based on the same platform as the Ford Fiesta. Though the company tried to accommodate the SUV appeal by stretching both the axles as far as possible. Yet, the Ecosport is the smallest in terms of length and wheelbase. Having said that, EcoSport lags behind the competition in terms of overall comfort. Honda HR-V seems to be the king in this comparison and is closely followed by the Mazda and the Chevy.

2021 Ford EcoSport Safety

8.0/10

The Ford Ecosport bagged an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars from NHTSA. With the absence of driver-assist features such as adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, etc., it's the higher grade sheet metal that seems to be working in favor of this crossover.

The Ford Ecosport gets a limited set of safety and driver-assist highlights, and that too, most of them are offered in the upper trims only. Some of the most prominent safety features that you can get as standard in the Ford Ecosport are:

  • Driver and Front Passenger Airbags
  • Driver and Front Passenger Knee Airbags
  • Front and Second Row side airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Emergency brake assist system
  • LATCH in rear seats
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring system
  • Remote Keyless Entry with Ford MyKey

2021 Ford EcoSport Competition

6.0/10

Ford Ecosport Vs. Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is one of the most economical crossovers you can get in this segment. The Honda offers more space and practicality inside its cabin, and perimeters you in a cabin that looks and feels much more premium than that of the Ecosport.

However, it's the Ecosport that offers a better driving experience as it packs in more grunt (with the 2L engine) and gets a much more indulging 6-speed gearbox, as compared to the CVT arrangement inside the HR-V.

Ford Ecosport Vs. Chevrolet Trax

The Chevrolet Trax is a decent car that offers a bang for buck proposition and could be your ideal family SUV. Though looks happen to be a subjective matter, yet, for the record, the Ecosport tries to draw in a big SUV vibe, whereas the Trax looks more like a swollen hatchback.

The Ford Ecosport, with its 2L 4-pot engine, packs in more grunt than the Chevrolet Trax, yet the Trax is faster, owing to the better power-to-weight ratio. The Chevrolet Trax also gets a more elongated list of driver-assist highlights. All in all, it's a very close call between these two.

Ford Ecosport Vs. Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 clearly has an edge over the Ecosport. Consider any aspect of comparison, and the CX-3 will emerge as a winner over the Ford. The Mazda packs in more grunt perform better, offers more space, and of course better fuel efficiency.

Apart from this, the Mazda CX-3 also has a better cabin layout, that feels much more premium than that of the Ecosport. However, it's the cargo capacity, the CX-3 takes a beating at.

2021 Ford EcoSport Final Verdict

The Ford Ecosport is a mixed bag with some pros and some cons. Though it's an absolute bang for buck value, and it may seem immoral to ask for anything more at such a humble cost. Yet there are some rivals that are offering a much better bundle and that too at the very same price. So in order to conclude, we’d say that the Ford Ecosport is a satisfactory agglomeration, yet we’d suggest you consider other competitors as well before making the final call.
