With cute styling and standard AWD, it adds a bit of adventurous spirit to Fiat's lineup- MotorTrend

With Fiat as a brand getting pretty dated, the 2021 Fiat 500X manages to pull off as a pretty good-looking and modern stance. The powertrain department is pretty good for a car of this size but its fuel economy is relatively less compared to segment leaders. One of the best points of the 2021 500X is its intuitive infotainment system and its attractive interior. But again, there isn't much passenger and cargo space. Also, the standard safety features list is really bad as almost all of them are optional.

Fiat offers affordable lease and finance deals for those who are looking to own one. Leasing for the 2021 500X starts from $337 per month for 36 months. An additional charge of $3,949 has to be deposited at the time of signing. Fiat also offers a 0% APR rate finance option for up to 72 months for its buyers. The true cost to own the 2021 500X is $9,454 per year which includes repair, maintenance, fuel, etc. The average cost per mile is $0.63, which is slightly higher than its rivals.

2021 Fiat 500X Buying Advice

For someone who is looking to buy his first car, the 2021 Fiat 500X can be a good choice. If the value is the point, then the Trekking trim makes all the sense. It adds fog lights, satellite radio, and a restyled front and rear bumpers for a more rugged appearance. We recommend buying the optional $1,395 Advanced Driver Assistance package as the 500X lacks active driver aids. This package adds Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and many more.

2021 Fiat 500X Engine and Performance

The driving experience is entertaining, too, up to a point- Autotrader

The 2021 Fiat 500X is powered by a 1.3L turbocharged inline-4 engine that produces 177 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque. All the power and torque go out through a single choice 9-speed automatic transmission system whereas the AWD system is standard. There’s a bit of an old-school turbo lag. Once the needle swings past 3000 RPM, you can really feel the turbo kick in. And there’s a nice noticeable jump that pushes you back into the seat in this wave of torque.

2021 Fiat 500X engine

Speaking of ride comfort, if you are used to a softer riding car, the 2021 500X is definitely going to feel pretty stiff. The suspension doesn't soak the bumps properly. The steering is well-weighted and feels connected to the road. Handling is good but not great. There is some body movement around the corners. Due to its compact size, it's pretty easy to maneuver in tight areas. Overall, the 2021 500X is going to please most buyers in terms of driving dynamics.

2021 Fiat 500X accelerates from 0-60 MPH in 8.5 sec

The compact body structure makes the 2021 500X one of the fastest accelerating vehicles in this segment. The 2021 500X takes 8.5 seconds to complete the 0-60 MPH sprint and hits the quarter-mile in 16.6 seconds. However, with an electronically limited 99 MPH of top speed, the 500X ends up being the slowest car too. As far as the Fiat’s braking performance goes, the 12-inch rotors in the front and 11-inch ones at the back take 120 feet to decelerate from 60-0 MPH.

The 2021 Fiat 500X is reasonably fuel-efficient- The Car Connection

The fuel economy of the 2021 Fiat 500X is above average. According to the EPA. the 2021 500X returns 24 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on a highway, and 26 MPG combined. Comparatively, the MPG figures are decent in its segment. The only problem here is that the 500X only drinks premium unleaded fuel, which is not the case with its competitors.

The 2021 500X is equipped with a 12.7-gallon fuel tank, which is probably the smallest in its segment. Hence, it can travel around 343 miles before running dry with its fuel tank loaded. That said, its competitors deliver better city and highway ranges owing to their large fuel tanks. Hence, cruising with the 500X will require stopping at fuel stations regularly.

The Honda HR-V turns out to be the most fuel-efficient SUV in this competition. It returns 28 MPG combined despite packing a 13.2-gallon fuel tank. The Subaru Crosstrek's MPG figures are the best here but its fuel efficiency is not quite up to mark. Meanwhile, the Jeep Renegade has the worst fuel economy and stands in the last place.

The configurable infotainment system is a bit slow to respond but fairly straightforward to use- Edmunds

The interior of the 2021 Fiat 500X looks stylish and kind of has an evocative look that Fiat has been aiming for. Cloth upholstery is standard while the upper trims get optional leather seats, which are more on the stiffer side. Comfort levels are not that good on the front seats as they are firmly padded. This may be an issue for long-journey travelers. An 8-way power driver's seat with 4-way power lumbar support is only available on the top-end Trekking Plus model while the other trims get manually adjustable seats.

2021 Fiat 500X cockpit

The steering wheel comes wrapped in leather as standard while the heating function is optional. The passenger space upfront is adequate for tall people. The rear seats remain compromised with, unlike the front which is definitely amongst the spacious in this competition. The legroom offered in the rear row is very less. Even the cargo volume offered is on the lower side compared to its class rivals. Behind the rear seats, you get 14.1 cu-ft. and when folded, it expands to 39.8 cu-ft. That's enough space for three golf bags or four large bags.

The Subaru Crosstrek offers the most legroom in the front row while the Honda HR-V's rear legroom is the best here. It is also the most practical vehicle in this competition. On the other hand, the Jeep Renegade offers best-in-class headroom in both rows. The 7-inch touchscreen on the 2021 500X looks small and dated but functions on the latest Uconnect 4 interface, which is one of the best from Chrysler. It is connected to a 6-speaker stereo while the top-end Trekking Plus trim gets a 9-speaker Beats premium audio system. The base Pop model gets a special 8-speaker Beats premium audio system as an option.

2021 Fiat 500X SUV Infotainment Screen

As far as connectivity is concerned, features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB ports are standard. There are several buttons and knobs around the screen which makes it easy to operate and less distracting while driving. This interface is held in high regard in the market for being one of the most intuitive multimedia systems. Although there are some drawbacks as well. While using the screen, it does take up only a 5.5-inch of the screen. So when it comes down to seeing the navigation display, it might become a bit challenging. Also, the camera resolution is fine but it does look a bit grainy. Some of the key interior and infotainment features are:

  • 7-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • 8-speaker Bose premium audio system
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • 8-way power driver's seat with 4-way lumbar support
  • 3 USB ports
  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function steering wheel

The Fiat 500X has some of that same retro/modern styling as the Fiat 500- Kelly Blue Book

One thing that may draw a lot of people to the 2021 Fiat 500X is its true Italian styling. It's definitely very unique. Upfront, you get a rounded, bulbous front end with halogen headlamps and LED DRLs while LED and headlamps and fog lamps are optional. Except for the Sport trim, the front fascia gets a semi-rugged appearance. The 2021 500X is kind of a high riding vehicle as its ground clearance is 7.9 inches, which is good for snow conditions and Fiat says that you could some off-roading with this car.

The 2021 500X gets 17-inch alloy wheels as standard but they can be upgraded to 18 or 19-inch wheels. The wheelbase of the 500X measures 101.2 inches, which is mostly on par with its rivals. The rear styling of the 2021 500X is very reminiscent of the regular 500, which has now been discontinued. The taillights design is kind of interesting as it gets a body-colored piece in the middle. If you like a true Italian styling, a unique factor to your car, you are definitely going to like the 2021 Fiat 500X.

On the other hand, the Honda HR-V has the lowest ground clearance here and its low curb weight helps it to deliver better performance on the road. The extra 3 inches of the Jeep Renegade's height contributes to better headroom than the 500X. Some of the noteworthy exterior features are as follows:

  • 17/18/19-inch Wheels
  • Automatic Headlamps
  • Bi-function LED Projector Headlamps
  • LED DRLs & taillights

2021 Fiat 500X vs 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

The base price of the Subaru Crosstek is less than the Fiat 500X. Its naturally aspirated motor makes 25 hp less than the 500X and hence, its acceleration is slower. The fuel efficiency of the Crosstrek is no wonder bad but its large fuel tank translates for a better driving range than the 500X. Moving to the interior, the Crosstrek's cabin feels airy and is more practical in nature. Even in terms of safety, the Crosstrek is a step ahead as it bagged the 'IIHS Top Safety Pick+' award.

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

2021 Fiat 500X vs 2021 Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is one of the most economical offerings in this segment as sports a low base price. Although its engine makes the least power in this competition, its acceleration is better due to its low curb weight. Moreover, it is also the most fuel-efficient SUV in this competition. The rear-seat space and cargo volume offered in the HR-V are the best in their class. As far as looks are concerned, the 500X is any day better looking than the Honda HR-V. Also, many of the safety features are standard in the HR-V.

2021 Honda HR-V

2021 Fiat 500X vs 2021 Jeep Renegade

Although both the Jeep Renegade and the Fiat 500X are FCA  vehicles and sit on the same platform, the initial price of the former is way less. The Renegade makes slightly more power than the 500X and offers a 4WD system. However, both vehicles display similar levels of performance. The Renegade's fuel economy is bad compared to the 500X. But, its roomy cabin and good trunk volume make it win some points. Speaking of safety features, the Renegade offers industry-leading safety features as standard.

2021 Fiat 500X Final Verdict

7.0/10

Despite sharing a platform with the Jeep Renegade, the 2021 Fiat 500X retains its own unique character. Starting with the engine, it is peppy and fast while the ride quality is good. But it does fall a bit bland in terms of passenger space and that calls for an Abarth version of the 500X. So, if buying an iconic design car is what you’ve been looking for in the market, the 500X will not disappoint at all.
