At first glance, you might think of the 500 Abarth as a tiny little hatchback from the Italian automaker Fiat. But do not let the looks mislead you. Although this car looks cute from the outside, it is a complete brat once you get behind the wheel and drive it. The 500 Abarth is the performance version of the regular Fiat 500.

While the regular 500 produces just 100 HP, this Abarth variant of the 500 churns out a healthy 160 hp from its 1.4-liter, inline-4 cylinder engine and comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. With the prices starting below $20,000, The engineers at Turin, Italy have ticked all the boxes right in building this car and offers a whole lot of performance at an affordable price.

The engineers at Turin, Italy have ticked all the boxes right in building this car except for the fact that it stands a little bit underpowered when compared to its American rival Ford Fiesta and its German rival the Volkswagen Beetle. Yet the 500 Abarth has a lot to offer and at $19,995 this is the most fun-to-drive car you can buy.

Go for the hardtop 500 Abarth hatchback. It costs $1500 less than the Cabrio 500 Abarth and has enough features on board. Even if you want the sun rays to hit you, you have always got the sunroof in place and so the hardtop 500 Abarth hatchback is the more practical trim of the two and offers great value for your money.

The Fiat 500 Abarth uses a 1.4-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine that delivers 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of max torque that is mated to a humble 5-speed manual transmission, and all the power is transmitted to the front wheels with no option for an all-wheel-drive configuration.

The 500 Abarth rivals like the Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T, the Ford Fiesta ST, and the Mini Cooper S which all make use of bigger engines and thus showcase slightly better performance figures than it. While this Italian pocket rocket loses power to its German, American, and British counterparts, it gains grounds in the affordability section.

What is the 2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback's 0-60 mph Acceleration Performance?

The 500 Abarth is an angry little car that screams at you saying that it is a sports car material and its claims do reflect upon its performance figures. Taking just 6.8 seconds to achieve 60 mph from a standstill and the 15.8 seconds quarter-mile run are all traces of a sporty car which the Abarth 500 does effortlessly.

Step on the pedal and the 500 Abarth will take you from 0-60 mph at a brisk pace, only falling short by just 0.4 secs to the Volkswagen Beetle that has a power advantage. Take it on a drag strip and the 500 Abarth will reach the quarter-mile mark almost at par with its bigger rival, the Beetle while the Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback is right behind the Mini Cooper S which stands as the clear leader

What is the 2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback's 0-60 mph Braking Performance?

With great power, you also need to equip your car with great braking abilities. Keeping that in mind, the Italian engineers have equipped the 500 Abarth with 11.1-inch disc brakes in the front and 9.4-inch disc brakes at the rear. These brakes help the tiny 2500 lbs car halt in 126 ft when braking from 60 mph.

Such braking capabilities only give you the confidence to harness the prowess of the engine to the fullest and enjoy the car to the core.

The Mini Cooper S has the largest brake rotors in this comparison and with the BMW technology on offer, it also has the shortest braking distance here. The 500 Abarth is the lightest in the segment and weighs just 2,512 lbs and yet takes considerably longer to halt from 60 mph. Only the Volkswagen Beetle comes close to the braking stat of the Mini Cooper S, thanks to its bigger brakes.

Has the Ride and Handling of the 2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback improved?

The 500 Abarth is a pint-sized car. It almost feels like you are driving a 160 hp go-kart! The steering is sharp and very communicative and does not feel vague. The car drives into corners well but you will notice a bit of body roll at high speeds.

This car is tuned for the race track and so are the suspensions. The suspensions are a bit on the stiffer side just to ensure you get a better cornering experience. On the flip side, stiffer suspensions mean you will notice every pothole and speed bump when you drive on the roads but you can still live with it.

2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 500 Abarth is a performance vehicle and most performance vehicles have a reputation of being gas guzzlers. This is where the 500 Abarth rips apart the competition as the EPA rates it for an impressive 28 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and a combined economy of 30 mpg. The Abarth 500 is let down by the small-ish 10.5-gallon gas tank due to which it only manages to achieve a combined driving range of just 300 miles.

All the cars in this comparison have a similar fuel efficiency rating except for the more powerful Mini Cooper S which consumes a lot more fuel than other cars present here. Still, the Abarth 500 is the most efficient car here, but since the Beetle has a larger fuel tank, it offers a superior driving range in every driving condition.

2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback Interior

2.8/10

There is nothing really special about the interiors of the 500 Abarth. Just simple subtle interiors with the dashboard covered with two-tone soft-touch plastics with a nice touch screen infotainment system in the center. The circular air vents are surrounded with chrome and the color scheme enhances the overall feel of the car on the inside.

2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback cockpit area

The front seats are race-spec bolstered bucket seats and are pretty comfortable while the room on the rear seats is not all that great. Passengers sitting on the rear seats will certainly have a tough time during long rides. Although Fiat claims that the 500 Abarth is a 4 seater but practically no adult can sit on the rear seats.

Just looking at the figures stated in the table you can say that the Ford Fiesta ST hatchback is the most spacious of the lot followed by the Mini Cooper S and then the VW Beetle. This is probably the only area where the Fiat 500 Abarth fails to score big, but that is kind of expected from the Abarth 500. Some of the interior features of the 2018 Fiat 500 Abarth are:

  • High-Back Performance Leather Bucket Seats with Racing Harness Pass-Through
  • Leather-Wrapped Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel
  • Aluminum Pedal Covers

How's the 2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback infotainment system?

In recent years, the infotainment system of a car has become a unique selling point of a car, hence the automakers are shelling out more money on developing smart and intuitive infotainment systems to attract more buyers and Fiat is no different. Fiat calls its infotainment system the UConnect system. The UConnect system is a host to lots of smart features. Fiat has equipped its infotainment system with features like 150 channel radio, voice command, MP3 player, phone memory, a navigation system, and much more.

The navigation system is developed in collaboration with SiriusXM and has well-designed maps to navigate you correctly to your desired place. Although it misses out on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay you still get Bluetooth streaming and calling facilities. Additionally, the UConnect system delivers detailed weather information including five-day forecasts, weather maps, and severe storm alerts along with fuel prices in your local area, movie theatre listings, and sports scores.

  • Optional Hifi Interscope System
  • Hands-Free Communication with Bluetooth Streaming Audio and an interface for a USB, MP3 Player and iPod Mobile Device
  • AM/FM Radio with CD Player

What is the Cargo Space available in the 2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback?

The cargo space in the Fiat 500 Abarth is not all that great. Two medium-sized bags in the boot and you are done. Thanks to its small dimensions, the 500 Abarth gets only 9.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row of seats which is the smallest among its competition. Fold the second row of seats down and you open up to 26.8 cubic feet of cargo volume which makes things better but is nothing substantial really.

The VW Beetle has the best trunk capacity but once you fold down the rear seats, there is no competition to the Mini Cooper S. The Beetle still gets the second largest luggage carrying capacity which is followed by the Abarth 500. The Fiesta ST hatch on the other hand has a marginally better trunk than the Abarth 500

5.7/10

The 500 Abarth is a bubble sized car. With its unconventional, circular, curvy design it attracts eyeballs as you drive down the road. The headlamps, the turn signals, and the fog lamps are all round in shape and the large Abarth scorpion logo that sits in the front and the racy body graphics that say ABARTH, add to the overall drama of the car. The 500 Abarth is 144.4 inches long, 64.1 inches wide and 58.7 inches tall and these proportions give the car that odd yet attractive look.

The 500 Abarth is the smallest car in the segment and is almost 25-inch shorter in length than the Volkswagen Beetle. It therefore also has the smallest wheelbase and also the least ground clearance. The Fiesta ST has the best ground clearance but is quite smaller than the Beetle in dimensions. The Mini Cooper S is way shorter than the Fiesta but has a similar wheelbase.

2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback Safety

2.8/10

The NHTSA has not tested the Abarth 500 yet but the independent analysis by the IIHS has resulted in good scores except in the small overlap front test which was not evaluated. Subcompact hatchbacks don't usually feature many advanced safety features, especially if it's a performance-oriented car and the new Fiat Abarth 500 is no different. Still, it gets a few nifty features, and the highlight of which is listed below.

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Brake Assist
  • Rear Parking Aid
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Driveline Traction Control

Fiat 500 Abarth vs Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T

You will certainly have a tough time choosing between the 500 Abarth and the Beetle 1.8T. Although the Beetle has a larger engine and produces more power than the 500 Abarth, the performance figures of both the cars are almost the same. Moreover, the Italian car is more fuel-efficient than the Volkswagen hatch thus ensuring that running it won't be hard on your pocket. On the flip side, the Beetle is the more spacious car of the two and can seat 4 adults comfortably and more luggage.

Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T

Fiat 500 Abarth vs Ford Fiesta Hatch ST

The Ford Fiesta Hatch ST on paper produces a whopping 37 hp more than the 500 Abarth. But because of its greater weight, the Ford is slower than the Fiat and the 500 Abarth outperforms the Fiesta Hatch in 0-60 mph acceleration timings and also in the quarter-mile timings. Also, the Fiat is more fuel-efficient than the Ford and is also cheaper.

Ford Fiesta Hatch ST

The only advantage that the Fiesta Hatch bears over the 500 Abarth is that it is more spacious and can comfortably carry 5 adults and can hold more luggage.

Fiat 500 Abarth vs Mini Cooper S

The Mini Cooper S is arguably the better-looking car for many reasons and it also outperforms the Abarth 500 in almost all aspects. The Fiat on the other hand has a more frugal engine and the compact dimensions help in tight parking spots. Not to mention the $7,000 price difference between the two, which seems too much considering there is not much difference in terms of performance. Thus, we feel the Fiat 500 Abarth provides a lot more value to its buyers than the Mini Cooper S.

2018 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback Final Verdict

The Fiat 500 Abarth is a cute yet angry little bubbly hatch. It is fast, it is quick, and is a great driving companion. It has a small 1400cc engine that churns out great figures and the exhaust note is a joy to the ears. The 5-speed manual transmission takes the game to the next level making it an enthusiast car.

It is ready to dive into corners without hesitation and handles really well. The 500 Abarth can be a great daily driver. It can easily zip past the corners and can squeeze even into the narrowest of the lanes. This car has the ability to make your daily boring home-office-home commute during the rush hours, exciting. And on the weekends, you can always take it to the track and harness its prowess to the core.
