The 812 is powered by a naturally aspirated 6.5 liter V12. The engine is complemented by a mesmerizing exhaust note that screams Italy. With an MSRP of around $335,000, the 812 is in a league of its own. Some might call it overpriced and some might call it too crazy for the roads. But what it is, is a perfect blend of elements. A blend that offers performance, styling, and class.

Ferrari has placed the 812 against the likes of the Mclaren 720S, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, and the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera. All of these vehicles offer the best of the best in every segment. Let’s find out more.

5.3/10

Even though it won’t matter to most of the people going out to buy an 812 Superfast, it is actually loaded with plenty of goodies. Yes, it might miss out on a central infotainment screen but it compensates for it with two separate screens. To add to that are all the options that the Ferrari Configurator offers. There are actually way too many options on offer. And the options are expensive. With options, a Ferrari 812 Superfast can easily cross the $400,000 mark.

The 812 Superfast is available in only one trim option. Having said that, there are tons of features on offer as paid extras. From handcrafted leather luggage to illuminated door sills, Ferrari offers everything.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Engine and Performance

9.9/10

Over the years, Ferrari has mastered the art of making V12 Engines. The engine inside the 812 Superfast is a testimony of the same. The engine itself is an experience- an experience that everyone deserves to go through but only a chosen few can actually feel. The 812 Superfast is powered by a 6496cc, 65-degree V12 engine. This produces 789HP at an astronomical 8900RPM (rev limiter is set at this RPM) and 529.5 lbs.-ft. of torque. A standout character of this motor is that 80% of the maximum torque is accessible at just 3,500RPM, which is extraordinary for a naturally aspirated engine.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Coupe produces 789 Horsepower

Talking about the gearbox, this 7-speed DCT unit is one of the smoothest pieces of machinery to have ever been made by humans. The gearshifts are seamless and perfect. Even at lower speeds, the gearshifts feel precise and quick. One thing you won’t feel in the 812- jerks. However, if you want to squeeze more out of your Ferrari, you can always take manual control of the gearbox. The paddles are column-mounted with makes it easier to place them even through turns and corners. Tap the paddles and you’ll feel instant gearshifts.

To add to the power and feel of the engine is its exhaust note. The sounds that the 812 makes are just pure bliss. Ferrari engineers have managed to ace the symphony that comes out of the quad exhaust system. The 812 Superfast is one car that you would want to take through the tunnels of Monaco with your windows cranked down slightly. It braps, screams, pops and makes every other sound that would make your pants wet at night.

Talking about engine displacement, the 812 and the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ have the largest engines out of this bunch- 6.5 liters V12. The SVJ pumps out a massive 759 horses and 531 lb-ft of torque. Then comes in the British Aston Martin DBS Superleggera with a 5.2-liter V12 producing 715 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque. If you don’t believe in “no replacement for displacement” the McLaren 720S has a 4-liter V8. But don’t be fooled, it might have the smallest engine but it is capable of giving the other cars a run for their money.

Is the 812 really Superfast?

Ferrari has done the 812 justice by adding “Superfast” to its name. "Ballistic" is another word that would ring a bell to portray the brutal speed of this Ferrari. When you sit in the driver's seat of the 812 Superfast and somehow have the guts to put your foot down, the 812 will impel you to 60MPH quicker than you might think. By the time you would realize what is going on, you would already be doing 60MPH.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Coupe hits 0-60 in just 3 sec

The 812 Superfast is actually superfast. The 60MPH mark is breached in 2.7 seconds. The PS or the “Power Start” button located in the center console (if you can call it a center console) is Ferrari’s way of saying launch control. One might wonder what would have happened if Ferrari decided to be so Ferrari while naming the 812. Would it have been the “812 Super Veloce”? Or the “812 Faster Than Your Dreams”? Or maybe even “812 Don’t think about chasing me”?

As far as straight-line speeds are concerned, the SVJ is the quickest of the bunch with a 0-60 timing of just 2.6 seconds which is absolutely mental. Lamborghini’s 6.5-liter V12 engine is an absolute gem. Even without forced induction, it manages to pump out such crazy numbers. Numbers that are crazy enough to make a person gulp twice.

Then comes in the McLaren 720 which is the only vehicle in this comparison to have forced induction. Even though it has the smallest engine, the 720S manages the 0-60 sprint in just 2.7 seconds. The low weight of the McLaren when compared to the other vehicles helps it a lot in outright acceleration.

The British gentleman that is the Aston Martin comes in last with a 0-60 sprint timing of 3.2 seconds. 3.2 seconds might have felt impressive a couple of years ago but now there are SUVs that can pull of 0-60 sprints in that time.

Quarter mile timings of these vehicles show another impressive pattern- they are almost at par. The 720S is the quickest down the quarter-mile with a timing of 10.1 seconds. The 812 comes in after it with one-tenth of a second off and then comes in the SVJ which is a further one-tenth slower. Like Dominic Toretto once said with no facial expressions in one of the Fast and Furious movies, ‘It doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning’. So, even though the 720S wins by a fraction of a second, it wins the battle.

How is it to take around corners?

One of the biggest complaints that customers had with the F12 was that it was not that easy to handle at high speeds and required serious skill to handle the car at those speeds due to the over sharp and aggressive steering. Ferrari has managed to do away with that “partly”. The ride is still “civilized” at low city driving speeds like the F12. But once you drive out of the city limits and decide to put the hammer down, the 812 Superfast will through you around like a rag doll, it will make you cry, it will make you beg for mercy and it will make you hold on to dear life. The 812 Superfast has one of the most direct and precise steering wheels in the automotive industry. The all-wheel-steering helps the cause.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Coupe comes with  “Electronically Assisted Power Steering”

The 2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast comes in with an “Electronically Assisted Power Steering” which is the first Ferrari ever to have this feature unlike the Conventional Hydraulic Steering present on the other models. This car also has Side Slip Control Version 5 that allows modulated feedback and torque control to the steering wheel from the sensors present in the rear wheels. The steering itself is made of carbon fiber and has F1 style LED’s which doubles as a digital tachometer and glows gradually as the engine starts nearing its redline of 8900RPM. The car also gets 4 Wheel Steering that aids in turning at corners at high speeds without much fuss.

Suspension duties are handled by dual-coil “Electronic Magnetorheological Suspension” or “SCM-E” as Ferrari would like to call. This allows for good absorption of bumps and undulations at high speeds by softening of the suspension and stiffening of the suspension when the speeds become higher and the car demands stability. You also get F1 inspired traction control and 3rd Generation Electronic Control Differential that works in tandem with the other electronics to provide sublime ride and handling. The tires supplied as stock units are the Amazing Pirelli P Zero tires that offer great grip levels on the road and allowing the car to attain its maximum speed of 211MPH.

How do the brakes feel?

For a car with these “Herculean” levels of performance, the brakes have to be of the same level. Ferrari has kitted up the 2020 812 Superfast with Brembo’s Extreme Design Brakes which were last seen on the “LaFerrari” and are no slouch. These brakes are the most efficient brakes Ferrari has ever equipped to its car. The units are made from carbon-ceramic - a material that has been named as one of the strongest materials in the world.

How carbon-ceramic helps in braking is very simple. Due to its better heat dissipation properties, it manages to heat up very little when compared to traditional steel discs. This, in turn, reduces brake fade if you do decide to throw your 812 around corners.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Coupe has a 15.6 in. Front Brake

The 812 Superfast is equipped with 15.6-inch units in the front and 14.1-inch ones in the rear. At this price point and in this segment, size doesn’t really matter. What matters is how good you are at utilizing that surface area. The 812 Superfast is also equipped with some active body panels that help in braking. For example, the rear diffuser closes its flap which in turn increases the drag and slows the car down.

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera has the largest front brakes in the bunch with 16.14-inch carbon-ceramic units. The SVJ and the 720S have similar rear brakes at 15 inches. These vehicles don’t just have brake rotors but they are also equipped with moving surfaces that help in braking. The McLaren 720S has an active spoiler in the rear that pops up under heavy braking as per the need.

In terms of braking distances, the SVJ with its ALA system performs the best. It manages to come to a complete halt from 60 miles per hour in just 96 feet. The ALA alters with the airflow through and around the vehicle to make it more efficient while driving, cornering, and braking. This has to be one of the most innovative and advanced feature in the whole automotive industry.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Fuel Economy

3.5/10

Well, if you are considering the 2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast, MPG figures might be one of the last things on your mind considering the V12 engine. However, Ferrari has added a lot of electronics and reduced the chassis weight as compared to the F12 that makes the Ferrari one of the most fuel-efficient V12’s out in the market

In comparison, it gets only beaten by the McLaren which is obvious as the McLaren uses a smaller turbocharged engine that delivers better fuel economy. However, it comfortably beats its, the Aventador by a slightly higher margin. The 812 simply uses better electronics than the SVJ which results in a better fuel economy.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Interior

5.5/10

Ferrari has paid a lot of Attention in appointing a “supercar worthy” interior to the 812 Superfast. The carbon seats themselves are low slung to keep the center of gravity low and are lightweight to keep the weight of the car down. Leave aside the cheap-looking and difficult to attach seat belts, the seats themselves have been contoured with leather which can be customized as per the buyer’s preference. The seats are comfortable for supercar levels and offer good levels of comfort for long runs in the car. The air con has horizontal dash loops that can be moved in any direction to channel air in any direction you want.

The exact interior dimensions of these vehicles are not available. However, all of these actually offer a good amount of room. Even if you decide to track your car, you’ll be able to fit in your car with a helmet on. The DBS is the only vehicle in this group that offers seating for 4. Even though you’ll only use the rear seats to keep carry bags, they’re still there.

Creature comforts to expect from the 812

  • Dual-zone climate control & air conditioning
  • Heating element on rear window
  • Manual adjust sports seats (power height adjust on driver’s side (embossed speed mark on headrest)
  • Manual adjust steering column (reach and rake)
  • Front luggage compartment accessible under hood
  • Machined from solid interior switches
  • Electro chromatic dimming rear view interior mirror

How good is the infotainment system?

Ferrari always focuses more on the driving experience rather than the creature comforts inside the cabin and this falls in line perfectly for the Infotainment system.

They, however, have added a big screen in the instrument cluster that has satellite navigation, driver info display containing all data with respect and other controls. Telephone controls, Bluetooth, cruise control button, traction control button, drive mode selector, turn Indicators, headlamp switches and paddle shifters are available on the steering wheel itself with the goal that the driver dependably maintains his attention on the steering wheel and not gets his hands off it. The audio quality is great and has been all around tuned to suit your listening preferences.

There is a small screen in front of the passenger on the dashboard that showcases the engine speed, gear, and speed. It likewise enables the passenger to control media, navigation and check different parameters like traction control, stability control and much more.

What about the cargo capacity?

Ferrari doesn’t boast about the cargo space of the 812 Superfast and neither mentions it on its website. But, the 2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast has decent space for luggage in the back which should be good enough for weekend drives or short trips.

Cargo volumes of these cars don’t really matter a lot. They are made for performance and they deliver on that front. However, the 812 Superfast is so comfortable and spacious that it can double up as a luxurious GT. It offers a rear deck in addition to the boot. And what’s special about the boot is that every option you go for in your 812, it is mentioned on a plaque in the bot of the car.

9.0/10

The 2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast is in no way a small car. It has a huge bonnet underneath which resides the big V12 power plant and helps Ferrari achieve the 47% front and 53% rear weight balance. The car continues to be bigger than the car it replaces i.e. the F12 hence making maneuvering this car across the city or in tight places, a complex job.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Coupe 3 Quarter View

In terms of styling and design, the 812 stands out from the rest. It has four separate lines that go down the side of the vehicle. Even with all these lines, the side doesn’t look overdone. It blends perfectly into the body and actually makes the car look good. Yes, the long hood makes it slightly difficult to maneuver around tight bends but once you decide to slide the Pirellis out, it only makes it easier.

The big proportions of the Ferrari translate into its ground clearance as well. The 4.33 inches of ground clearance is one of the higher units than the competition. On the other hand, the uber precisely designed McLaren 720S offers just 4.21 inches of ground clearance, which makes it one of the most prone cars to underbelly scraping.

What to expect in terms of exterior features?

As with many Ferrari’s of the past starting from the legendary 458 Italia, the 812 Superfast is an engineering marvel and an artist’s masterpiece. The 812 grabs eyeballs wherever you take it and don’t be shocked if you see some people following your car. Other features include

  • LED Headlamps and Tail Lamps with LED DRL signature
  • 3 Active Flaps on the Rear Diffuser that open up to 14 degrees to reduce drag
  • High-Resolution Front Parking Camera and Rear Parking Camera
  • Sculpted Side Doors and Outside Rear View Mirrors to increase Aerodynamics and Downforce
  • 20” Pirelli P Zero Tires for added grip on road
  • Vents behind the front wheel to suck high-pressure air from wheel arches and channel it along the doors
  • Vents sculpted near the Headlamps on the Bonnet to suck air from the Outside and aid in Engine Cooling and improve Aerodynamics while reducing Drag and improving downforce.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Safety

4.5/10

Like other supercars, Ferrari does not include a safety section on its official website and its brochure of the 812 Superfast. This is because driving a thing like this is itself unsafe and requires a lot of caution and responsibility from the driver’s side. That being said, the 812 Superfast comes with plenty of safety equipment on board, to keep the occupants safe in the case of an eventuality. Plenty of driver aids are present as well that intervene at the right time when the systems and the electronics ensure some kind of improper behavior from the car.

Some of the safety features and tech onboard the Ferrari include:-

  • Side Slip Control version 5
  • Electronic Stability Program 9.1
  • 3rdGen Electronic Control Differential
  • Brembo Extreme Design Carbon Ceramic Disc Brakes
  • 4 Airbags with ABS and EBD
  • Crumple Zones on the Bonnet that absorb impacts at high speeds effectively

NHTSA (The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) have not rated the Ferrari 812 yet.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Competition

Ferrari 812 Superfast Vs Mclaren 720s

In the initial days, McLaren faced a lot of issues with its MP4-12C. Having said that, as time has passed on, they have managed to iron out most of the issues. The 720S has become one of the most sought after supercar. It offers alien-like looks and spaceship-like performance. However, you might need a separate bank account if you do decide to go for the 720- for its maintenance and spares. The 812 is more of an all-rounder and the 720 is more inclined towards performance.

2020 Mclaren 720s

Ferrari 812 Superfast Vs Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

In a world of innovation and things moving on to a different level every day, the Ferrari V12 and the Aventador have managed to evolve together- hand in hand. However, while Ferrari has introduced a lot of electronics in its drive train, Lamborghini has stuck with what they know best- NA V12 with a single clutch transmission. So, if you want a more raw and direct feeling, the SVJ is the one to go for. But if you dream of a comfortable cruiser with the ability to outrun anything in the blink of an eye, the 812 is the one for you.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

Ferrari 812 Superfast Vs Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

The Aston Marti DBS Superleggera is something you would want if you want to arrive with elegance like the Queen of England. It offers tons and tons of leather in combination with forged carbon fiber. It might not be as extreme in terms of performance as the other vehicle in this segment but it still manages to put on a good show. The DBS focuses more on luxury, comfort, and opulence. So, if that is what you are looking for, close your eyes and write a cheque.

2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast Final Verdict

The 812 stands true to Ferrari’s V12 ethos. It is violent, yet luxurious. Wild, yet tamed. It is comfortable, yet Superfast. The 2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast offers the best of all worlds. It is a mixed bag of everything one could ask for from a performance vehicle. It handles like a dream and is quicker than your dreams. So, if all of this is what you are looking for in a supercar, the 812 Superfast is the one to go for.
