Dodge is known for making some insane drag strip machines, however, over time, it has also worked on its reliability and customer satisfaction. Hence the 2020 Dodge Durango SRT has received a score of 77 out of 100 in terms of quality and reliability in J.D. power’s survey and data report. Like most of the sub-brands under the FCA group, the SUV also offers unmatched value and parts availability compared to other foreign brands. Be it quality study reports or customer satisfaction reports, the Dodge Durango SRT has scored quite well with J.D. Power giving a strong overall score of 80 out of 100.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The full-sized Dodge Durango SRT has been rated quite well on Kelly Blue Book guide, however experts do raise a concern over its long-term reliability. The SUV’s resale value is also not very high with it losing quite a lot of value in the first year itself. As per J.D. Power report the current Dodge Durango SRT scores an average predicted reliability rating of 77 out of 100. However, the Dodge has a brand still scores quite low on J.D. power 2020 Initial Quality Study. It bags 26th place in the list which is quite below the industry average.

On average, the 2020 Dodge Durango SRT Sedan on average cost about $61,325. The people from Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Atlanta, and Delaware enjoy the lowest prices as they have an exemption from the sales taxes.

5yr table

The Dodge Durango SRT is can be called a more or less sorted vehicle when it comes to a worry-free ownership. Why more or less you might ask? Well, it is for the fact that the car has 3 recalls as per the NHSTA website which is neither good nor bad according to the industry average. There are currently 51 customer complaints reported by the NHTSA regarding the 2020 Durango SRT. Dodge does not offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance, however, repairs are usually covered under the warranty for a stipulated period.

In terms of the ownership costs, on an average, you will have to shell out nearly $56,376 in 5 years when you buy a brand new Dodge Durango SRT SUV. This is on the higher side especially when you compare it with some of the other rivals.

Warranty

Dodge provides the same warranty as every other model in its line-up with the Durango SRT. It is on par with the segment but not among the best in its class. While the limited warranty is just average, the roadside assistance offered is quite lucrative and will last for 5 years. Dodge offers a 24-hour emergency road service available in the United States valid during the 5-Year/100,000 -Mile Limited Warranty term.

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain limited warranty

5 years/ 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-hour roadside assistance

5 years/ 100,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Dodge backs the Durango SRT with a basic limited warranty, which cannot compete with its European rivals such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. However, Dodge ensures that the important parts of your vehicle are protected against defective materials or workmanship. Parts included are Batteries, Catalytic Converters, Powertrains, Shocks/Struts, Mufflers, etc. There is also a 5-year warranty for the powertrain and a limited warranty cover for 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) for the Durango SRT. Jeep and Dodge both come under the umbrella of FCA and hence offer similar warranty figures and coverage.

Miles Per Dollar

Dodge Durango SRT’s annual running cost is approximately 9,000 USD, which makes it run 25 miles for every $2.62. This average miles per dollar figure is on the higher side due to its low fuel efficiency.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Buying Advice

While there are other trims available in Dodge Durango’s line-up we strongly recommend you to stick with the SRT or Street & Racing technology version if you are looking for performance and luxury. In comparison to its rivals, the Durango SRT costs much less than its rivals which includes its corporate cousin the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT that is based on the same FCA platform. With a strong score of 80 out of 100 in J.D. Power survey, the Durango SRT offers quite a value for its buyers

Is buying a used car Dodge Durango SRT a good idea?

The Dodge Durango SRT does not retain its value quite well unlike some of its other rivals. For the first year, the SUV tends to lose between 15% to 18% of its value in the first year which comes out to be about $22,000. Moreover, the fuel cost of this SRT is also very high, due to its massive V8 engine. What provides slight relief is its maintenance cost which is quite low and shall cost you about $3,678 at the end of 5 years. The repair costs also remain zero providing further relief due to the limited 3-year warranty.

According to the depreciation value, the 2019 model years are the best ones to look out for. The total fitness of the Durango SRT is 12 years, and the 2019 version gives it around 11 more years of perfect usability.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT is expected to get the same powerhouse as the current model. This means that the 2021 model will also be powered by a 6.4-liter V8 engine producing 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the same unit that is also used by the Grand Cherokee SRT which is mated to an 8-Speed Automatic gearbox. The engine feels quite sporty and the automatic transmission works like a charm especially when it comes to downshifting. The Durango SRT also offers paddle shifter to take things under your control but the most loved feature on offer is the launch control. Overall, the V8 motor is quite capable of dealing with everything you throw at it with highway cruising and overtaking being its forte.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Engine

The most interesting option to be offered in the 2021 model line-up is the Dodge Durango Hellcat which shall offer power upwards of 700 hp which shall make it the most powerful SUV on this planet. However, it will be a limited year model meaning it shall go off the shelf after a year of its launch.

The Dodge Durango SRT’s 6.4-liter engine bests the Mercedes-Benz and BMW’s engine output and offers the maximum power to price ratio. It settles with a tie when it comes to the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT which essentially gets the same engine and the platform as the Durango. However, the Durango SRT costs $132 per horsepower while Grand Cherokee SRT costs $145 per HP.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT Acceleration And Braking Performance

When it comes to acceleration, the Durango SRT does not disappoint at all. Rather, it is capable of imprinting a big smile on your face once you decide to tap onto its throttle pedal. Being a muscle SUV, the Durango SRT is meant for drag races and even offers a launch control to make your rivals eat some dust. However, as the SUV is heavier than its corporate cousin, the Grand Cherokee SRT, it takes longer to reach 60 mph even though it gets the same engine and power output. It manages to reach 60mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds which is 0.4 seconds slower than the Jeep.

Grand Cherokee SRT’s 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds bests the X5 xDrive m50i and AMG GLE 43 alike. The Mercedes AMG GLE 43 is the slowest car among the cars under review, which is due to its lesser power output and lower torque on offer. However, all cars in this comparison offer all-wheel drive as standard with the launch control only being available in the Jeep and the Dodge

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Fuel Economy

7.0/10

As mentioned before the Dodge Durango SRT is no fuel-efficient machine. Hence, it offers the worst fuel economy in its segment alongside the Grand Cherokee SRT. The European rivals offer turbocharged engines which makes them quite fuel-efficient compared to these muscle SUVs. The Durango SRT offers an EPA estimated mileage of just 15 MPG in mixed driving conditions. However, With its 24.6-gallon fuel tank, it manages to provide at par fuel efficiency when compared to its rivals. For the 2021 model, Dodge could offer a more fuel-efficient turbocharged motor which might be available as another trim.

Looking at the rivals, it’s just the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT which offers the same poor fuel efficiency while the other two rivals get better scores. Ironically, the other two rivals, the BMW X5 m50i and Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 43 also offer the same exact fuel efficiency with their smaller but turbocharged motors.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Interior

8.4/10

The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT is expected to offer a few new changes when it comes to the interiors. It is expected to receive a new pattern when it comes to stitching and a bigger infotainment screen. The current model’s cabin is no bad place to be in as it offers a spacious, practical, and an upmarket cabin. Its best selling point is the space for seating seven people. The cabin offers enough space for five adults, with the sixth being coming at a tight squeeze. Its front and second-row seats are quite supportive and offer excellent legroom.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Cockpit Area

The interior is well-equipped and features top-notch materials with a soft-touch dashboard and leather upholstery. The third row of seats is a hit or miss as they are only suitable for kids or smaller adults. The SUV offers a commanding view of the road up ahead with its overall visibility being good. In comparison to its rivals, the Dodge Durango SRT offers quite a lot of features inside its cabin like the adaptive Cruise Control, Auto-Dimming Inside Rear-View Mirror, Optional Powered Sunroof and Optional rear DVD entertainment center.

Behind the third row, the Durango features 17 cubic feet of storage capacity, better than some three-row SUVs but not as good as most minivans. That number grows to 43.3 cubes behind the second row, and a maximum of 85 cubic feet with both rear rows folded flat. Overall, its cabin offers good value but lacks behind its European rivals when it comes to offering opulence on the inside.

Infotainment System

Unlike its predecessors, the current Dodge Durango SRT's offers an 8.4-inch infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and Alpine premium audio with nine speakers. Its interface remains futuristic and intuitive to use. The infotainment interface is quite user friendly and offers lag-free performance. Being the top-specced trim it features navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio, other than Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Infotainment System

The display is high resolution and offers crisp fronts and details. The 2021 model is expected to offer an upgraded 10-inch screen instead of the current 8.4-inch unit.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Exterior

8.1/10

Exterior styling refinements to the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT shall remain more or less the same with the SUV offering some additional exterior elements and a sharper looking body kit. Its styling has design has been unchanged for years now but is loved by many due to its tough-truck appeal. It still manages to grab quite a lot of eye-balls, especially with the SRT body kit. The macho muscle SUV looks are engraved into Durango’s DNA and it offers quite an imposing stance from every angle. Its sculpted line and hood scoops give it a more sporty look with the big blacked-out grille at the front. The SRT model removes the chrome-laden look that some of the Durango’s trims offer and goes for a more sporty but reserved looks.

Hence the Durango is the best SUV if you are looking for road presence with BMW X5 m50i taking the second spot.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Safety

7.4/10

Well, you must be thinking what is the trade-off for the cheaper price of the Dodge Durango SRT? Well, the trade-off is safety to some extent as the SUV gets 4 scores out of 5 in the NHSTA crash tests. The previous generation of the Durango also scored the same stars for overall safety. Its three-star for rollover is one of the worst in its segment. With the IIHS crash testing, similar results were found and the car managed a Marginal score for both the driver’s side small front overlap and headlights. The Durango SRT offers features such as automatic emergency braking, active lane control, lane-departure warnings, and adaptive cruise control as standard.

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Competition

7.3/10

2021 Dodge Durango SRT Vs Mercedes AMG GLE 43

The Mercedes Benz GLE 43 has been aimed towards customers who would like to travel more in its rear seats. Hence, it is a more luxury-oriented machine which offers the best materials inside the cabin. With its opulent cabin and top-notch comfortable ride, it ensures that all its passengers travel in style and utter comfort. When compared to the Dodge Durango SRT, the GLE 43 offers batter fuel economy, safety as well as luxury. However, the Dodge Durango SRT is still more value for money option and offers better performance.

Mercedes AMG GLE 43 SUV

2021 Dodge Durango SRT Vs Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Both the Grand Cherokee DRT and the Dodge Durango SRT are based on the same platform and also offer the same exact engine. However, when you compare the two, the Grand Cherokee SRT comes out as a more performance-focused machine. It also offers a slightly better list of features along with more customization. But when we talk about practicality, the Durango SRT is miles ahead as it offers an extra row of seats and comes with more space on the inside.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

2021 Dodge Durango SRT Vs BMW X5 xDrive M50i

The BMW X5 M50i is arguably the most driver-focused car in this comparison. It offers quick performance along with many performance aides that help this SUV feel more like a regular car. However, once you put it in the sport mode, it turns into a track bending machine and offers the best fun to drive experience behind the wheel. It also offers a more premium and an upmarket cabin when compared to the Durango SRT. However, the Durango SRT has two significant advantages, which is the price and the third-row seats. The SRT also costs much less than the BMW and hence offers a better value for your price.

BMW X5 xDrive M50i

2021 Dodge Durango SRT SUV Final Verdict

The Dodge Durango is all set to engrave its name in the history books by offering its limited Hellcat version for the 2021 model year which shall make it the most powerful SUV on the planet. As far as the regular SRT is concerned, the SUV is expected to get minor but significant changes. It shall remain the value for money muscle SUV which offers space for seven people on the inside. With its attractive pricing and supreme practicality, this is all the SUV you will ever need. Hence, we recommend you to wait for the 2021 Dodge Durango to be launched if you plan on buying and all-purpose muscle SUV.

SRT tag is enough to give an idea about the performance of Durango. V8 under the hood oozes out raw power delivering to all 4 wheels. Right when I floor the pedal, nothing else is needed, no fancy features or climate control(has everything though). I know what I have bought and it gives me exactly what I want in a justified price tag
