In an era where saving the polar bear has taken top priority, the automotive industry, in a bid to save the polar bear has resorted to the science of Downsizing and hybridization which in a gist are responsible for making all new cars less fun to drive. However, Dodge has decided to chuck this trend out its window and instead has taken an old school approach to motoring which involves slamming the biggest engine you can find, under the hood of a seemingly boring everyday runabout and that's exactly what the Dodge Durango SRT is.

This Durango is your everyday soccer mom mobile on steroids. The 5.7 Liter Hemi V8 in the R/T manages to churn out a healthy 360 horses.

What's truly amazing about the Durango R/T is how it manages to put its power down which involves a whole lot of grunt and rumble from the V8 which makes it a soccer mom mobile with tonnes of American drama and muscle.

In its R/T guise, the Durango offers plenty of kit as standard equipment and the exteriors of the car also feature the sporty bumpers and grill setup which makes it far more appealing than the standard Durango in every way.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV Engine and Performance

6.8/10

The 5.7-liter 392 crate motor that has been the flag bearer of the Mopar lineup for a while now and has proven its worth in many FCA platforms. In the Durango R/T, this motor is tuned to produce 360 HP and 390 lb-ft of torque. While this may not sound a lot, trust us, you won't need anything more than this on your normal commutes. The engine may feel slow initially but get the motor to rev past the 2,000 rpm mark and you will be transported to a whole new dimension.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T Has a 5.7L V8 Premium Unleaded Engine

As you start revving up this 5.7L naturally aspirated V8 motor, you can hear the sweet V8 note that you associate these engines off. The engine is nicely packed in the engine bay and if you are to work on this engine, it won't be a tough task to do so either.

The 8-speed transmission used in the Durango is FCA’s standard-issue single-clutch unit that is used in everything from the Charger police car all the way up to the Red-eye Challenger hellcat. It’s been specially tuned to handle the R/T Durango’s massive torque figures.

How Fast is the Dodge Durango R/T?

The Dodge Durango is American Muscle in all of its glory, courtesy its muscular looks and a great big American V8 which propels this 7,100 lbs behemoth to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, which is simply unrivaled by any SUV in its class or even a class above.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T 0-60 MPH in just 6.7 sec

This Dodge is also probably one of a hand full of SUVs that are capable of running a quarter-mile in under 14.9 seconds straight out of the factory floor.

So in short if you are looking for a family car that can seat seven in comfort while possessing the ability to pull like a freight train and put a couple of sports cars to shame on a dragstrip over the weekend. All of that and more without endangering all of your life savings, then the Durango is for you.

Does it Brake as well as it Accelerates?

The Durango R/T is packed to the brim with a performance-oriented kit that one would expect from a throw bread supercar. The breaks, for instance, are two-piece Brembos boasting 15 inch ventilated rotors for the front and 13.8 inch for the rear which in the Durango SRT is more of a necessity that a performance feature especially if you take into account the Durango’s sheer mass and the ballistic acceleration which demand big breaks to make this SRT a safe and easy to live with on a daily basis.

In terms of comparison with its rivals, we expect the Durango, to be on par with the best. Currently, the Porsche Macan takes top honors in this respect, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jag and the Merc are on par with each other on the braking front.

How good is the Ride and Handling?

The ride and handling is probably the last thing that comes to mind when we talk about a three-row SUV or a typical American muscle car and guess what the Durango R/T is both. So as one would expect it is no sports car around corners and one is greeted with tonnes of body roll. But other than that the Durango R/T is easy to live with courtesy a light steering which makes it easy to wrestle this behemoth of a vehicle in and out of tight city space and at highway speeds it weighs up quite nicely and doesn't feel unsettling or unnerving at high speeds.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV Fuel Economy

7.0/10

This is probably the only area where the Durango R/T gets low marks but it won't come as a surprise to those who are familiar with this power plant. This gas-guzzling monstrosity of an engine only manages to return a despicable 17 mpg on a good day when driven with a light foot. In full steam, however, the Durango is capable of returning as low as 12 mpg which puts it in supercar and hypercar territory.

So if you are looking to save fuel or step up and become an eco-warrior, then the Durango R/T isn't what you are looking and you’d be better off with the regular Durango with its V6 powertrain, but if you are one of those who prioritize smiles per gallon over miles per gallon, then the Durango R/T would make perfect sense in your world.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV Interior

8.3/10

Dodge has taken a rather unconventional approach by offering only a 6-seater configuration for the new Durango R/T which isn't really the best utilization of space in an SUV with so much room on the inside.

The seating capacity aside the Durango R/Ts interiors are quite utilitarian, with plenty of cubby storage spaces which make it a practical space to be in, but there's no escaping the fact that this cabin feels very 2000s in the sense that it fails to match up to the equipment levels and creature comforts that its rivals have on offer.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV Front Seats

The quality of the interior isn't the best either and one will come across plenty of scratchy plastics. But the R/T does bring in certain premium elements into the Durango’s cabin which include Nappa leather upholstery for the seats, and optional features like seat heating and ventilation.

In terms of space, there's plenty of it on offer even for the third row which can seat two in comfort and offer flexible legroom due to the use of the captain seating setup for the second row instead of the conventional bench seat setup. The second row is mighty comfortable and the adjustable captain seats make the second row of the Durango R/T a comfortable place to be in.

But the driver's seat of the Durango is the best of them all and with the optional bucket seats, the experience is elevated.

How does the Infotainment system feel like?

The Uconnect infotainment system used onboard the Dodge Durango is not going to win any awards for innovation nor does it bring onboard any cutting edge industry-leading tech with it. But what it does is get the job done well, without any fuss or drama. The display isn't the sharpest but the easy to use interface and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity makes it easy to use on a daily basis.

What are the creature comforts on offer?

Dodge has loaded the cabin of the Durango R/T with a ton load of bells and whistles. Some of the most noteworthy highlights include the following

  • Climate Control
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Auto-Dimming Inside Rear-View mirror
  • Optional Powered Sunroof
  • Optional rear DVD entertainment center
  • 2nd-row console armrest with power outlet

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV Exterior

8.1/10

The Dodge’s design philosophy behind the Durango R/T is pretty simple, i.e go big or go home. As a result, everything about this Hemi powered Durango is huge. For starters, the Durango’s front facia is in line with most new Dodge and Jeep products as it dawns a slim LED headlights with neatly tucked DRLs which look simple yet elegant. The grill is huge with minimal use of chrome which is down to the styling which is in line with its bigger and badder sibling, the SRT Durango touches that helps in getting rid of plenty of chrome throughout the vehicle's exterior and instead it is replaced with a meaner looking gloss black finish. The bumper is also bigger and receives an array of scoops and vents as a part of the R/T package.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV 3 Quarter View

The hood used for the R/T is also a bolder unit with a massive hood scoop but unlike the SRT its not riddled with vents but its more than enough to distinguish it from the regular Durnagos and the luxurious Citadel. The blackout treatment isn't just limited to the grill and the chrome, the rims and side mirrors too receive this treatment. The side profile of the Durango R/T is fairly plain and simple with big windows and a typically boxy and SUV-ish design which is overpowered by the massive 21 - inch forged alloy wheels. The rear end is beefy with massive wrap-around tail lamps and a sporty rear diffuser that houses the thunderous dual exhaust setup.

To sum up the looks department, the Durango is styled like a typical SUV but the muscular looks and the sheer size of the Durango R/T make it one of the most intimidating rides on the roads presently and this will definitely look scary creeping up on your rearview mirror.

Exterior Features

LIke the Interiors, there are multiple features on offer on the outside of the Durango R/T. Some of the most noteworthy highlights include

  • Hood scoop
  • Sporty front bumper
  • Rear bumper with diffuser
  • Large Dual exhaust tips
  • 20" Forged Wheels

How good is the Cargo carrying capacity?

As is the case with most three-row SUVs, the Durango does not offer much space with the third row up. However, with a flick of a lever, the row seats drop into the floor to reveal a massive 47.7 cubic feet of cargo area which obliterates its competition.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV Cargo Volume is 17.2 cu ft.

Just in case this space does not suffice your needs then you could always fold the second-row away to unveil 84.5 cubic feet of space which is enough to move a house.

The Durango’s chassis uses modular construction to incorporate advanced crumple zones throughout the vehicle's structure to ensure that most of the impact forces that might be generated during a crash are directed outwards and away from the cabin.

Dodge Durango R/T vs Ford Expedition ST

The Explorer is the newest and possibly the most direct rival to the Durango. The Ford is the only SUV in this comparison which offers a similar seating capacity to that of the Durango R/T and is capable of outperforming the Durango R/T in terms of performance. The only place where the Durango is able to redeem itself is in the size department as it offers a bigger engine and overall dimensions. However since this Ford is a new kid on the block, the technological advantages are more or less obvious and hence it comes across as a better overall package than the Durango R/T.

2020 Ford Expedition ST

Dodge Durango R/T vs Mercedes GLE 43 AMG

The GLE 43 is the entry-level AMG offering from the AMG lineup, even though its not powered by the mighty bi-turbo V8, the 3.0 twin-turbo V6 power plant under its hood is mighty powerful and offers exhilarating performance and the glory of the AMG batch in a macho yet luxurious package, the luxury part is where the merc has the upper hand but when performance is in question, the Durango simply blows the AMG out of the water and the 5 seater GLE does not even offer the practicality that's delivered by the Durango R/T.

2020 Dodge Durango R/T SUV Final Verdict

In a world where all modern performance cars and SUVs have resorted to downsized engines with turbochargers and superchargers bolted onto them to make more power while keeping the environment happy, Dodge has decided to go old school by slapping in a thumping Hemi V8 into a regular looking family SUV and we are glad that they did as this Durango SRT is probably the performance bargain of the century which will you forget about all of its flaws once tyou put the pedal to the metal.
