Priced at $60,740 for the Hellcat widebody and $72,745 for the uber-powerful Hellcat Redeye, the 2020 Challenger is a steal deal for the amount of power it produces and for the heritage it carries with the iconic badge on the grill.

It was the seventies when ‘freedom’ was not just a word but an expression. Idolizing the expression was a generation hungry for reshaping almost every element they touched. So was the case of automobiles. Breathing the American age of building extravagant automobiles, the late seventies saw the launch of the ultimate muscle car which adhered to no boundaries.

It's the dawn of 2020 now and the renditions of this muscle premium have inspired generations of enthusiasts and people alike.

The 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat now owns the temple of the king, the king of speed. Available in two trims, the SRT Hellcat now comes only in widebody style and spots minimal styling updates.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Rookies will say it's illegal to drive a car with such monstrous power generating capabilities. With 717 horsepower under its suit, this machine is FAST. The 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat makes 656 lbs./ft. at 4800 rpm. Like the other Hellcats, the 2020 Challenger SRT is a chariot designed for the unruly. Defining its character on a straight line, the Challenger faces few backlashes in terms of its launch control. A bit of an exercise we must say but with the number of triple-digit speed it can reach in a jiffy, everything else is just a shadow.

Exhaust Note of a supercharged engine merged with the V8 orchestra mesmerizes the deeper alleys of your heart while it resonates with the excitement. It hits you hard, harder than Ray Charles's high notes.

Married to the V8 are both 8-speed manual and automatic transmission which carry their own individual bags of good and bad. While the automatic transmission gives this age-old muscle car a new charisma and makes it fast, the manual stick shift has its own fanbase and capabilities. Carrying its own charm, the manual shift makes it easier to stretch the machine a bit more on every acceleration, helping in achieving mega straight-line speed.

Muscles generally exist in pairs but in-car world there are several of them present. Facing the heat here is the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500. Priced $12000 more than the 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat, the 2020 Shelby GT 500 hosts a 5.2 liter supercharged V8 which makes growling 760 hp and makes 625 lbs./ft. of torque. That’s obviously more horsepower than the Hellcat and less torque.

But if you think about it, the 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is a full-size family sedan with an insane power figure and has no direct competitor because of its 4 door size. It comes near to cars like the M5 because of its size and capabilities. Fitted with a 4.4 liter V8, the sports sedan makes 600 horsepower and 553 lbs./ft. of torque. Obviously it doesn’t share the insanity of a muscle but competes well with the Challenger SRT in terms of size and functionality. It's a lot costlier than both the competition here and doesn't stand a chance.

How long till 60mph?

Did you hear the rumble yet?

Just the sound right?

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe 0-60 MPH In just 3.7 sec

Zero to 60 in a mere 3.7 seconds. You don’t stand much of a chance to see it if you are standing on a podium and the Hellcat zoom past you. Rumbling like the ‘dimicorgan’ from the famous Netflix series, ‘Stranger Things’, the exhaust sounds are a part of the 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat’s identity.

A quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds is another example of how things get nasty on the road if the Hellcat makes its roar. Adding an extra inch to the tires and the rear-wheel-drive adds to the acceleration and make the 2020 Challenger SRT a sight to behold, only when it is parked.

How are the driving dynamics?

The SRT imprinted sports seats welcome the admirer with open arms and entice you to push the engine button and rev the hell out of it. But for the times when you actually want to drive it around and let your neighbors know you are out on a hunt, make sure to push the aluminum pedals with precision. This beast runs like a tamed hungry tiger running towards its prey. Take the first corner and you will notice, it carries heavy “juicy double” and hesitates in taking sharp bends. Something that the Shelbys and the Camaro are so good at as if they have been doing it since their toddler age.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Front View

Hold on if you are making the impression that it's rough to ride. You don’t have to be ‘Vin Diesel’ to drive it like a pro, get the automatic transmission model and the muscle man is ready to drive you around the city with ease. Frequent stops to the fuel station are going to be much more common, so make peace with it.

The three-spoke steering in the front feels composed and firm. Available with both a hydraulic system and an electric assistance steering system, the muscle feels planted and controlled. Although, the track-focused version is much more agile and works like a charm.

How well does it stop?

Big red Brembo brakes on all four wheels perform as the aesthetic identity of the 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. But not just aesthetics, they are downright the best in the segment. For a sedan of this size and over 4400 lbs. weight, brakes need to be efficient.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Fuel Economy

3.5/10

Well, for a mammoth of this size, fuel economy is definitely not expected to be of great proportions. With about 13 miles per gallon range in the city traffic, the 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is not the most fuel-efficient muscle car in the market.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Interior

8.2/10

Designed as a driver’s car, the 2020 Challenger SRT received the last interior update back in 2015. A straightforward layout with buttons and switches developed the experience called the Dodge Challenger. With the mechanical inputs, the entire ‘Muscle Language’ of the 2020 SRT was kept intact while other sporty elements finished the look inside the cabin. The 2020 Challenger Hellcat comes with leather upholstery, SRT badging on seats and ventilated front-row seats. The interior space in the cabin is quite comfortable for both the passengers while most of the controls are centered towards the driver.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Front Seats

With all these features, the 2020 SRT definitely looks stunning but what’s not so cool about the Challenger is the cheap-looking plastic material on the dash. You can get rid of this and customize it with premium leather giving it the much desired premium appeal. Rear visibility is hampered due to the design of the sedan making it extremely important to rely on the rearview camera and sensors. An optional carbon fiber bezel with dynamic suede headliner and flat-bottom steering are also available with the 2020 SRT.

Big sporty seats with electronic adjustability up to 12 marks makes the 2020 Challenger SRT a sight to behold in terms of comfort. Rear seats are definitely crammed as you would expect out of a muscle car. We tried fixing one of our tallboys in the back seat and trust us, it's not a very comfortable place to be in.

How much cargo can it store?

Not bragging but the wide-body structure of the 2020 Challenger is not just the architectural element but also helps in making the car efficient both in terms of interior space and cargo capacity. With a capacity to hold up to 6 standard side baggage, the trunk is enough to keep your luggage for a short trip or pick up groceries in. (Seriously? Groceries in a Challenger?).

8.2/10

If you can find a single person under the sky who is not aware of the Challenger SRT styling, we can believe the earth is flat. Differentiated among muscle brigade with its iconic round headlamps coupled with a dark grille, the 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has received minor styling updates in terms of exteriors. Bigger tires plant the machine well on road with new wide-body chassis. Discontinuing the previous generation of Challenger, the 2020 Challenger come only with the wide body kit. A functional air intake hood on the bonnet complements the front end when appreciated through the rearview mirror. SRT badging on the grille with turn indicators on the bumpers makes the front stance of the car. A styling crease flows through the side body all the way to the rear. Followed by the crease are LED rear lamps with twin exhaust and dodge badging. A rear spoiler adds to the sporty attire of the 2020 Challenger SRT making it a well-equipped mega-machine.

Black painted alloy wheels with sparkling red Brembo brakes are enough to bring the rush in your head. Although the muscle gets a bit impractical due to its low ground clearance it's not so uncomfortable on city roads.

The 2020 Challenger SRT is heavy, not a normal car heavy but definitely a muscle car heavy. And it's long too, longer than the sedans we are used to. With the size of a minicab, the Challenger SRT comfortably defines its power to weight ratio which helps in improving the cruising capabilities of the car.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe/Wide Body VS 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Well, this is what ‘muscle dreams’ are made up of. Challenger VS Shelby is the rivalry of a lifetime in the motoring world. Priced about $12,000 costlier than the Challenger, the 2020 Mustang Shelby makes more horsepower and comes with a V6 engine while it makes less torque than the Challenger SRT. With Ford about to launch the all-electric 2020 Mustang Mach-E, the manually driven muscle charm of the iconic Mustang is on the verge of existential crisis. In such a state, owning a GT500 will come with a heritage that could go a long way. Although costly, it may be a better option out of the 2 muscle cars here.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe/Wide Body VS 2020 BMW M5 Base 4dr All-wheel Drive Sedan

Comparing a muscle machine with a Bimmer is unconventional but interesting in its own way. Priced over 40 thousand dollars costlier than the Hellcat, the 2020 M5 hosts equal powerful engine but churns out much less horsepower and torque than the 2020 Hellcat. Patrons of the muscle machine will always be in love with the hellcat but if you are looking for a sedan with capabilities much smoother than the hellcat in terms of road performance, M5 is your take.

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Final Verdict

Only available in the widebody exterior for 2020, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat performs at the brim of power and adrenaline. Supercharged mill under the hood keep the tires rolling with much precision with the Muscle car charm driving you along all the way to the planet of the cargasm.

What's with the whinning of tremec

Overall Review -

7

Overview Rating

Weight transfer is screwed and so is the tremec transmission. 0-60 feels more like a thrust back on the seat and straight line stability is impeccable. Transmission has left me thinking if its worth it. Tremec has this habit of whinning whenever I downshift hard even after I rev match to ensure I put the least amount of strain on my clutch. Took it to the dealership and the whinning sounds as they say is normal. Not what internet says though
