With a complete refresh slated for 2023, the 2022 Dodge Challenger shall remain all familiar with no major changes. What that means is that buyers in 2022 would get the same trims, a V6 and three V8 engines and similar feature list as on the 2021 Challenger. However, building upon its subtle-tweaks in its recent model years, we can expect some fine cosmetic upgrades in the 2022 Challenger as well. What would be the last model year of its current third-generation, the 2022 Dodge Challenger is also expected to carry a familiar starting MSRP of around $28,000.

Perhaps the 2022 model year would allow Challenger’s loyalists and enthusiasts one last chance to grab one in its full glory. That's something before Dodge gives it a complete makeover with a new exterior and interior design, lighter body and a hybrid hybrid powertrain, The upcoming updates in the 2023 Challenger aim at sustaining it in the longer run with better value and performance to better compete with its age-old rivals like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

After its last third-gen update in 2008, the Dodge Challenger whole-heartedly embraced the art of consistency, culminating into its biggest USP. Yes, its cocktail wide body, classic American muscle design and powerful engines is being served for more than a decade now. However, it has received subtle tweaks like design changes in 2015 and induction of the SRT Hellcat Red Eye and R/T Scat Pack Widebody in 2019. The current 2021 as well as the 2020 Challenger also received some minor tweaks but again mostly on the cosmetic front.

Perhaps what distinguishes the Challenger from most of current products at the price is its immense versatility. We are talking about multiple engine options to pick from as well as plenty of options and customizations schemes. A spacious cabin with thoughtful, clean and driver-oriented interior layout alongside a dynamic character further ace its value proposition. No likely changes for 2022 again, but its “consistency” is finally slated to break in 2023 with its all-new fourth generation. While the 2023 Challenger surely seems to evolve on almost every single aspect, the 2022 model would still offer the Classic American pie, for one last time.

2022 Dodge Challenger Pricing and Features

With no expected change in its trim structure, the 2022 Dodge Challenger shall continue to roll with its two base configurations. As in the current 2021 model, there would be the same SXT ($28,295) and GT ($31,295) models. No major mechanical difference and both these two models offer the safe companentry with aesthetical and feature upgrades in the GT. While the base SXT is pretty much bare bones, the SXT adds niceties like larger 20’ inch wheels, upgraded seats and brakes, paddle-shifters and rear parking sensors.

Both the aforementioned shall also carry their standard RWD configuration with the familiar AWD continuing as a $3000 option. If you have a greater appetite for muscle and power though, the higher performance trims (treated as separate models) like the R/T Scat Pack or the SRT Hellcat would serve you better.

We Recommend

With a bump of $3000 over the base SXT, the Dodge Challenger GT seems to be a more sensible choice. No update in performance though but the GT does bring some additional features like paddle-shifters and steering-mounted cruise controls.

2022 Dodge Challenger Engine and Performance

The 2022 Challenger will continue to source its power from its three available V8 engines across its diverse lineup. The lower SXT and GT models are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 which comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and makes 305 hp. The R/T comes with a 375 hp 5.7-liter V8 while the R/T Scat Pack gets a 485 hp 6.4-liter V8. Both these two models come mated to a 6-speed manual.

The range topping SRT models get a powerful 6.2-liter V8 with power varying between 717 hp to 797 hp with either of the two available transmissions mentioned above. The base 3.5-liter engine seems smooth and refined and capable enough of handling everyday duties. The available V8 monsters though proportionately amplify the Challenger’s outrage. Equating the right mix of power, fun and economy, the R/T with its 375 hp V8 seems to hit the sweet spot.

Among its segment here, the Challenger seems to be on par with its rivals in terms of power output. While it may be heavier than its rivals here, the Challenger does show plenty of wild potential. Even with the base V6, the Challenger races from 0-60 mph in just 5.3 seconds making it as quick as a 525 lbs lighter Nissan 370z.

On the move, the Challenger may not be as agile as its rivals but for something its size, it has a nicely balanced character. With its efficiently tuned suspension, the standard Challenger is a comfortable daily-driver which can flex its muscles in no time, on demand. With ventilated discs and ABS at all 4 corners, the ,the Challenger is also a confident stopper.

2022 Dodge Challenger Fuel Economy

Since its engine options will be carried over from the 2021 model year, the 2022 Challenger will deliver a similar EPA-rated fuel economy as its 2021 model. With the base V6 expect an economy of 23 mpg combined. Equate that with an 18.5 gallons of fuel tank and you have a combined driving range of 425 miles which should be enough for your daily driving needs.

The current Challenger’s fuel economy is certainly on par with the rivals which does take a dip with the higher V8 engines. However, with the rapidly changing industry standards, the 2023 Dodge Challenger is said to get a hybrid powertrain which would promise best in class efficiency. The hybrid powertrain could feature the 2.0-liter engine of the Ram 1500 paired with an electric motor.

2022 Dodge Challenger Interior

With a thorough revision coming up in 2023, the 2022 Dodge Challenger shall feature its familiar cabin structure for one more time. No changes at all and you would still get to see the same old-school payout with a neat and thoughtful placement of controls and nice materials. While you do get cloth seats with manual adjustments and a leather steering in the base SXT, the GT adds in Houndstooth cloth seats with some extra bolstering. The GT also gets paddle-shifters and steering mounted cruise controls.

Even on the feature front, the 2022 Challenger would continue to flash its standard 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment. The higher models above the R/T get an upgraded 8.4-inch infotainment system. The system is sharp and responsive and its clean interface and large icons make it quite easy to use. On the connectivity front, the standard infotainment comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB and a 6-speaker audio. You also get a driver-information display, WiFi hotspot and HD Radio.

Apart from its clean and minimal cabin, the current Challenger also scores good points in terms of space and practicality. Though its rivals offer better legroom at the front, the Challenger has the best in class headroom at both the rows along with class-leading rear-seat legroom. Even in terms of cargo space, the Challenger stands tall with its best in class 16.2 cu-fts of space at the back. Until we are introduced to its refreshed 2023 iteration, the 2022 Dodge Challenger would still keep up on its overwhelming promises.

2022 Dodge Challenger Exterior

Probably for one last time in 2022, the Dodge Challenger will don its unmistakable sheet that we have come to know for a long time now. Before a thorough refresh in 2023, we would get the 2022 Challenger with all its classic signatures with no major changes at all.

You will get the same quad-halogen headlamp setup, flared hips and a wide yet aggressive stance. Though the base SXT model comes with 18’ inch, you would still get larger 20’ inch wheels on the GT which further intensifies its aggression. As usual, you would still be able to pick from a plethora of exterior customization schemes.

Despite its consistent exterior sheet, in purview of its final third-gen model the 2022 Challenger could get some new paint schemes and wheel designs. While it may not be as lightweight, compact or as youthful as its rivals, the Challenger has a stance and presence on the roads like nothing else. The unique modern-retro look of the Challenger will surely turn heads and imprint the 1970's vibe in everyone who catches a glimpse. Moreover, different trims will have their own personas and subtle exterior changes.

Expected Exterior Features:

  • 18/20-inch alloy wheels with All-Season Performance Tires and Tire Inflator Kit
  • Front and Rear Solar Control Glass
  • Body-Color Exterior Mirrors with Heating Element
  • Power Mirrors with Manual Fold-Away
  • Automatic Projector Headlamps with Front Fog Lamps
  • Center High-Mount Stop Lamp
  • Illuminated Entry and Illuminated Door Pull Handles
  • LED Split Tail Lamps
  • Rear Courtesy Lamps
  • Trunk Lamp
  • Body-Color Fascias
  • Gloss Black Grille with Challenger Grille Badge
  • Satin Black Rear Spoiler

2022 Dodge Challenger Safety

Despite its muscle car body and sportscar performance, the 2020 Challenger will keep you as safe and sound as its current 2021 model. The previous Challengers have been praised by the NHTSA and have received 5 out of 5 stars from them. The 2022 Challenger will likely follow in the same footsteps and keep you safe with the plethora of safety features.

However, most high-end active features like Blind Spot Monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, park assist, etc will likely be part of their safety add-on package, and some will be offered as standard only with the higher trims.

2022 Dodge Challenger Competition

Dodge Challenger Vs Ford Mustang

While the Challenger and Mustang do have similar power figures and price bracket but have completely different characters. While the Challenger is all about classic American muscle and aggression, the Mustang does the same but with a good flavor of curvy and youthful modern design. The Mustang also has a better interior layout, is available as a convertible and is also more sporty and maneuverable than the iconic Dodge. The Challenger on the other hand turns out to be more comfortable, more spacious dnd more practical than the Mustang.

Dodge Challenger Vs Chevrolet Camaro

When pitched against the Chevrolet Camaro the Dodge Challenger again seems to be on the backfoot. The Camaro is more stylish with a better interior and tech features. The Camaro not only offers better driving engagement than the Challenger but it also has a better feature suite. The Dodge Challenger on the other hand has a more aggressive design, is more spacious, practical and comfortable than the Camaro as well. With the base engine, the Dodge here is also quicker and powerful than the Chevrolet pony.

2022 Dodge Challenger Final Verdict

For those looking for an old-school powerful muscle car with tons of comfort, space and practicality, the 2022 Dodge Challenger would probably be their last chance to grab one before it's 2023 refresh. Though it may look old-school, but for its price and size, the Challenger offers good all-round performance comfort and importantly a dynamic character. Its available V6 and V8 Engines feel refined and potent, the cabin though dated still holds an upscale vibe into it while simultaneously clinging on to a healthy suite of tech and driver-assistance.
