While the environmentalists around the world are growing nuts for Eco-Friendly cars, Chrysler wants to shut a few of these up by introducing the same. One of the first vehicles in its segment, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the Eco-Friendly version of the gas-powered Pacifica Minivan and aims to be more frugal than the same.

Not that Chrysler has earned a lot of name for its gasoline counterpart, but the Pacifica shares the spotlight with many more reliable cars of the same segment. As for now, the hybrid competes against a rather challenging opposition with Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.

For 2018, Chrysler has made a slew of additions to the Pacifica Hybrid. A new Touring Plus trim has been added to make the Pacifica more accessible to the masses. Other noteworthy changes include an Updated Uconnect infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and 2 New Exterior Color options. Engine and transmission remain the same from last year. In terms of pricing, the 2018 Pacifica Hybrid now starts at $41,090 for the base touring plus trim and goes over $46,000 for the top of the line Limited trim. The Dodge Caravan, Honda Odyssey and the Ford Flex stand as the primary rivals for the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid as none of the rivals come in the hybrid form.

Like any Chrysler now-a-days, the Pacifica also comes loaded with amenities. Especially the hybrid variant gets some special treatments, sculpting the insides with some blue-badging. Speaking off trims, Chrysler has Introduced a new Touring Plus trim for the 2018 iteration of the Pacifica Hybrid Minivan, in lieu of increasing its reach to a higher number of people. This trim will supposedly lower the purchase price for the most since it will be the starting trim of this hybrid lineup. What it will feature is given in the table below.

We Recommend

It's a common practice for most reviewers to recommend the middle trim to the people, but in this case, we do recommend the top of the line Limited trim. The Limited trim offers a lot of creature comforts and conveniences at a fairly low asking price against the rivals and is worth the extra money.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Engine and Performance

6.6/10

Powering the 2018 Pacific Hybrid Minivan is a 3.6L V6 motor that belts out the same power figures as the standard Pacifica. What makes the Hybrid different from the standard unit is the lithium-ion battery, which has the plug-in capability and allows the Pacifica hybrid to run as long as 33 miles on battery alone.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Engine Bay

The Brake Energy recovery system increases the charging capacity of the Pacifica hybrid and makes it more frugal in the long run. A slick CVT unit does the job of the transmission unit in the same and is one of the smoothest units around.

The Pacificas hybrid line might be the first of its kind but it might not conquer the likes of gas-powered Minivans. The Ford Flex is the king of the hill in this aspect, followed by the Dodge and the Honda respectively. When compared in torque, Honda Odyssey takes the cake by offering 262lb-ft.

Acceleration

The heftiness of the hybrid apparatus robs the Pacifica Hybrid of its performance, despite its electric powertrain. The Pacifica hybrid takes 7.8 seconds to reach 60 and takes 15.6 seconds to reach the quarter-mile. The Gas-powered rivals of the Pacifica take less time than it and feel more responsive on the whole. The silver lining is the score in the lower emission ratings, thanks to the greener output of power.

In comparison, Honda Odyssey takes the lead in 0-60mph by finishing in the best in class time of 6.6 seconds. Even in the quarter-mile, Honda overtakes everyone and finishes first with a time of 15 seconds. Pacifica Hybrid takes the second spot in quarter-mile but falls flat in the 0-60mph as it comes last by taking around 7.8 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The extra pounds of hybrid battery and motor should have tampered with Pacifica’s handling but not much has changed. It's still nimble and quite maneuverable, similar to its gas oriented sibling. The steering is light and has a central feel to it.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Front View

The road communication might be less, but the shape steering instincts inspire confidence on tricky roads. Body roll is there but it's well-controlled. As you slide to the L mode, the regenerative brakes are put to work. The cabin feels comfortable and until the wheels intercept any major or minor anomaly, which sends shockwaves through the cabin.

Braking

The brakes on the Hybrid Pacifica are different than the gas variant. The brakes feel completely commonplace in D, but as you shift to L, the regenerative brakes take the lead. The pedal is easy to modulate and has a relatively short journey mitigating the response time.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Front Left Wheel

In terms of dimensions, the front brakes are grinded to 13 inches, and so is the rear. The similar dimensions may pose some questions about the braking performance initially, but given the regenerative braking, there is no displeasure experienced while applying the brakes. From the speed of 60 mpg, the Pacifica took 119 feet to come to a stop. The change from regenerative to mechanical brakes is purely unnoticed.

Despite its weight, the Pacifica Hybrid manages a decent runtime in the braking test. Although the most accurate data about its rivals is not available yet. Coming from experience, the 119 feet of the Pacifica seem quite understated, followed by Ford Flex’s 125ft.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Fuel Economy

9.9/10

Being the only hybrid version in the segment brings responsibility and the feeling of leaving a mark on the minivan market. Chrysler did that with Pacifica’s efficient hybrid nature. The combined mileage is set at 32 mpg, which itself is a 10 point jump from the regular Pacifica. Though the fuel tank capacity is reduced to 16.5 gallons.

On sheer battery power, the Pacifica can go as long as 33 miles, which is quite a statement to make. With gas and electric powers combined, the total drive range is calculated at 520 miles, which makes the equivalent mpg 32. Since all the competitors are gas-powered, the gas-mileage offered by them feels insufficient in comparison to Pacifica Hybrid’s offering.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Interior

8.0/10

You can use the Pacifica for daily commuting or for going camping on the weekend. Pacifica can home seven to eight people at one time depending on which second-row seating option you pick. You can either go for the bench or the captain's chair.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Dashboard

The seats sit high above the ground but the low ground clearance compensates for the same. Access to the second row is through a sliding door, which has a decent opening. The third-row access is easy too and can comfortably accommodate three adults.

With large windows and thin pillars, visibility is a strong point on the Pacifica. The quality of the interior is nice with a lot of soft touches, but the same cannot be said for the poor material used on the steering. The Hybrid version does not enjoy the stow-n-Go feature as that space was used to harbor the hybrid motor. Other features like the conversation mirror gives parents full access to what their children are doing at the back. If you talk about the interior design, it's one hell of a minivan and indicates how much minivans have changed in all these years. Few important interior features include-

  • 3rd-Row Fold-in-Floor 60 / 40 Bench
  • Cloth Bucket Seats
  • Manual 6-Way Driver Seat
  • Active Noise Cancellation
  • Front Driver and Passenger Air Conditioning
  • Outside Temperature Display in Odometer
  • Power Door Locks
  • Power Front Windows w/ 1-Touch Up and Down Feature

Cargo

The most sensible choice to fit the Hybrid motor and battery is the boot, though Chrysler loses the Stow-n go seats to smartly secure the full cargo bay. With all seats up, the Chrysler delivers 32 cubic feet of cargo volume. The second seats if needed can be removed like on other minivans, though third-row seats have the foldable feature. The full Pacifica cargo bay is rated at 140. 5 cubic feet, which is nice but not the best in the lot.

In comparison, the Honda Odyssey takes the cake by offering the best cargo space of 158 cu-ft. The tough competition comes between Chrysler and Dodge as Pacifica takes the lead with just a minute difference of 0.2 cu-ft. Ford Flex fails to make an impression as it limits itself at just 83.2 cu-ft.

Infotainment:

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a complete car, which becomes more evident when you look at the whole infotainment system in the car. The Pacifica Hybrid borrows the entire system from its gasoline counterpart. It comes packed with technology that is bound to make all your drives interesting. A Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touchscreen, six-speaker stereo are among the standard features. While Bluetooth, USB port (Front and Rear Seats), Uconnect Access, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are also a part of the standard package. However, you can upgrade to different optional infotainment systems on the Pacifica.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Infotainment System

We recommend you to choose the 8.4-inch screen with capacitive touch as the screen changes the whole experience in the car. The trims upwards of Touring L also get two 10 inch touch screens for the second-row passenger, which can also be controlled from the entertainment console in the front seat. Some prominent features of the infotainment system include:

  • U-connect system with 7-inch touchscreen
  • 6-Speaker Stereo
  • Bluetooth
  • Voice Recognition
  • Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
  • 10-inch rear entertainment system (O)
  • 13-Speaker Alpine Stereo (O)

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Exterior

8.0/10

Although the majority of minivans look the same, the all-American Pacifica adds a little flair to the design. It's the most curvaceous van modeled over the boxy body, which is a strong design statement. The Chryslers logo and grille look better than ever and feel like it was built exclusively for this van. Despite big dimensions, the Pacifica mystic makes it look smaller, however, it's a big van and its cabin says it all.

The Pacificas soft exterior and curvaceous metal sheet make it stand out amongst other minivans. The Pacifica is 10 inches longer than a full-fledged executive. It’s width is rated at 79 inches and height at 70 inches. The ground clearance of 5.1 inches is lower than most of the vans in the segment. The wheelbase is rather large, courtesy of the overall length.Few major exterior features include-

  • 17-Inch x 7-Inch 5-Spoke Aluminum Wheels
  • Incandescent Stop Tail Lamps
  • High Beam Daytime Running Headlamps
  • Body-Color / Black Power Mirrors
  • Exterior Mirrors with Heating Element
  • Rear Window Defroster
  • Sliding Driver-Side Door with Fixed Glass

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Safety

8.0/10

The Chrysler Pacifica features a long list of safety features along with a strong core safety. The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid is yet to be tested, though the gas Pacifica was duly tested. IIHS names it as it's Top Safety Pick+, and NHTSA awarded it with an all-star rating. As said earlier, the list of safety features is long with active safety features like blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, cross-traffic alert, and more. Other driver-assist features include automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist. Other features include-

  • Auto Delay Off Headlamps
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control
  • Blind Spot Warning Accident Avoidance System
  • Front, Rear, And Third Row Head Airbags
  • 4-Wheel ABS
  • Brake Drying
  • Emergency Braking Preparation
  • Front Fog/Driving Lights
  • Post-Collision Safety System

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Competition

9.0/10

Dodge Grand Caravan vs Chrysler Pacifica

Dodge Caravan is actually what the possibility of a perfect van resembles. It has space for seven, and it's an open van. Like the Pacifica, there is sufficient capacity to counter the city's traffic and hit the city streets at the end of the week. In spite of the fact that it's an OK van and matches everything the Pacifica does, yet as a purchaser, you can't avoid Pacifica's cutting edge look. Likewise, as far as the economy, Chrysler's Hybrid MPG figures are rewarding. At the end of the day, the decision lies in the fact that if you prefer a future-ready van or a modern-day van.

Honda Odyssey vs Chrysler Pacifica

The Honda Odyssey is the Chuck Norris of the minivan segment. It screams luxury and power and leads the segment on the same front. As far as measurements and utility go, the Odyssey offers more than the Pacifica. The Newly updated version spices things up as well in this space. In contrast with the Pacifica, the Odyssey is progressively agile and friendly for child occupants specifically. The hybrid Pacifica does not have the foldable seats like the Odyssey. So, if practicality is your first choice, there is still no beating the Odyssey, but if you are looking for a more luxurious ride, the Pacifica holds the edge.

Ford Flex vs Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica is a clear winner in this banter despite its higher price. Yes, the Flex has a singular design that looks more like a crossover, but lacks the appeal that the Chrysler can make. Besides, another downside for the former is that its price is comparable to a much luxurious car, but cannot be perceived as one in the real world. The small and boring infotainment is probably one of the crucial drawbacks of the Ford. On the other hand, it gets an extremely peppy powertrain, along with a highly comforting cabin. But, in the end, the Pacifica emerges victorious thanks to its state of the art hybrid technology.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Final Verdict

The Hybrid Pacifica opens a new area of capabilities for the standard minivan driver. The ride quality isn't really awful with no perceptible change than the gas-filled Pacifica. The MPG numbers go as high as 32, and that's a figure that can make compact hatches envy it. The 33 miles of pure electric range is enough for you to ferry your kid to the school and back. While the Pacifica Hybrid may lack practicality, it certainly makes up with its luxury quotient on the inside. Overall, if you want a spacious van that is ready to go deep into the future and burn fewer holes in your pocket, the Pacifica Hybrid will be a good investment on those fronts.

Magnific Pacifica

Pros - Practicality, Cozy seating.

Cons - Probably the mileage, which is pretty underwhelming, from what I expected.

I think if one has no problem as far as price of the car is concerned, he should definetly buy this car, for the simple reason that it has great utility.

I'm not going to start by praising the fuel efficiency which is no doubt far better than my last car but still obvious for an hybrid. I'd rather take this oppurtunity to mention its smooth and noise free drive quality.
