With the upcoming decade, the American giant is making it sure that their practice stays on track with the Pacifica along with its hybrid variant staying ahead of the race. All of this doesn’t come as a surprise, simply because of the appealing features at an even more appealing price that catches the audience and ensures that the sales keep scaling up the ladder.

With the old school 3.6L V6 motor mated with the usual 9-speed automatic transmission, Chrysler didn’t put any effort into making any mechanical changes in the car. Fortunately, major changes have been made to the design and styling of the car, at an almost similar price, thereby ensuring that the car keeps up with the new generation along with a budgeted price point.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Engine and Performance

7.5/10

Well, unfortunately, we couldn’t witness any mechanical change in the first launch of the Pacifica Hybrid in the new decade. As usual, Powering the 2020 Pacific Hybrid Minivan is a 3.6L V6 motor that belts out the same power figures as the standard Pacifica. What makes the Hybrid, differ from the standard unit is the lithium-ion battery which has the plug-in capability and allows the Pacifica hybrid, to run as long as 50 miles on battery alone, which was earlier.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivan 3.6L V6 Regular Unleaded Engine

Talking about the features of the engine, the motor is equipped with a regenerative braking system that recycles the kinetic energy used to stop the brakes into energy to charge the vehicle’s battery. Alongside that, an Atkinson cycle combustion system is offered for improved efficiency without compromising vehicle performance. The hybrid-electric motors work in tandem with the engine in order to fetch an increased all-electric drive vehicle speed.

The vehicle uses a one-way clutch that typically allows the motor to be used only as a generator to deliver torque to the wheels, depending on the driving conditions resulting in increased efficiency. As far as the transmission is concerned, The 9 speed automatic is not the smoothest gearboxes present around but it still does the job, users have an option to choose for a slick CVT as well.

The Pacifica’s hybrid line might be the first of its kind but it might not conquer the likes of gas-powered Minivans. The Ford Flex is the king of the hill in this aspect, followed by the Dodge and the Honda respectively.

How fast is it?

The added battery surely does take a toll on the acceleration of the car as it doesn’t really perform as good as its gasoline sibling. Despite the electric powertrain, The Heft of the Pacifica hybrid robs it of its performance. It takes 7.8 seconds to reach 60 and takes 15.6 seconds to reach the quarter-mile. The Gas-powered rivals of the Pacifica take lesser time than it and feel more responsive on the whole.

How is the ride quality?

As expected, the extra pounds of hybrid battery and motor should have tampered with Pacifica’s handling but to our surprise, not much has changed. It’s still nimble and quite maneuverable similar to its gas oriented sibling. The steering is light and has a central feel to it, road communication might be less but the shape steering instincts inspire confidence on tricky roads. Body roll is present but it's well-controlled.

As you slide upwards to the L model, the regenerative brakes are put to work. The cabin feels comfortable and until the wheels intercept with any major of minor anomaly which sends shockwaves through the cabin.

How is the braking system?

Brakes on the Hybrid Pacifica different than the gas variant. The brakes have a natural feel as the shift to D and as you shift to L the regenerative brakes take the lead. The pedal is easy to modulate and relatively has a short travel distance and the response is immediate too. The Front brakes are rated at 13 inches and so is the rear. From the speed of 60 mpg, the Pacifica took 119 feet to come to a stop. The change from regenerative to mechanical brakes is purely unnoticed.

4.0/10

Being the only hybrid version in the segment brings responsibility and the feeling of leaving a mark on the minivan market. Chrysler did that with Pacifica’s efficient hybrid nature. The combined mileage is set at 32 mpg which itself is a 10 point jump from the regular Pacifica.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Fuel Tank Cap

Though the fuel tank capacity was reduced to 16.5 gallons. On sheer battery power, the Pacifica can go as long as 33 miles which is quite a statement to make.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Interior

8.5/10

You can use the Pacifica for daily commuting or for going camping on the weekend, the limit to its interior versatility. Pacifica can home seven to eight people at one a time depending on which second-row seating option you pick. You can either go for the bench or the captain’s chair. The seats sit high above the ground but the low ground clearance compensates for the same.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivan Front and Rear Seats

Access to the second row is through a sliding door that has a decent opening. The third-row access is easy too and can comfortably accommodate three adults.

With large windows and thin pillars, visibility is a strong point on the Pacifica. The quality of the interior is nice with a lot of soft touches but the same cannot be said for the poor material used on the steering.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivan Dashboard

The Hybrid version does not enjoy the stow-n-Go feature as that space was used to harbor the hybrid motor. Other features like the Conversation mirror gives parents full access to what their children are doing at the back. If you talk about the interior design it's one hell of a minivan and indicates how much minivans have changed in all these years.

How much is the cargo volume?

The most sensible choice to fit the Hybrid motor and battery is the boot, though Chrysler loses the Stow-n go seats to smartly secure the full cargo bay. With all seats up the Chrysler delivers 32 cubic feet of cargo volume.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivan Cargo Volume 140.5 (cu.ft.)

The second seats need can be removed like on other minivans though third-row seats have the foldable feature. The full Pacifica cargo bay is rated at 140. 5 cubic feet which are nice but not the best in the lot.

What to expect on the features front?

There are a lot of features on offer in the Pacifica Hybrid. Some of the most noteworthy features include

  • 3rd-Row Fold-in-Floor 60 / 40 Bench

  • Active Noise Cancellation
  • Front Driver and Passenger Air Conditioning

8.0/10

Although the majority of minivans look the same the all American Pacifica adds a little flair to the design. It’s the most curvaceous van modeled over the boxy body which is a strong design statement. The Chrysler’s logo and grill look better than ever and feel like it was built exclusively for this van. Despite big dimensions the Pacifica mystic makes it look smaller, however, it’s a big van and its cabin say it all.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Side View

The Pacifica’s soft exterior and curvaceous metal sheet make it stand out amongst other minivans. Its Pacifica is 10 inches longer than a full-fledged executive, its width is rated at 79 inches and height at 70 inches.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Safety

8.0/10

The Chrysler Pacifica features a long list of safety features along with a strong core safety. The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid is yet to be tested. Though the gas Pacifica was duly tested and IIHS names it as it's Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA awarded it with an all-star rating. As said earlier the list of safety features is long with active safety features like blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, cross-traffic alert, and more. Other driver-assist features include automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist.

The other safety features include

  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • 2 Front Headrests
  • Auto Delay Off Headlamps

Dodge Grand Caravan vs Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

Dodge Caravan is actually what the possibility of a perfect van resembles. It has space for seven and it's an open van. Like the Pacifica, there is sufficient capacity to counter the city's traffic and hit the city streets at the end of the week. In spite of the fact that it's an OK van and matches everything the Pacifica does, yet as a purchaser, you can't avoid Pacifica's cutting edge look. Likewise, as far as the economy, Chrysler's Hybrid MPG figures are rewarding. At the end of the day, the decision lies on the fact that if you prefer a future-ready van or a modern-day van.

2020 Dodge Grand Caravan

Honda Odyssey vs Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The Honda Odyssey is the Chuck Norris of the minivan segment. It screams luxury and power and leads the segment on the same front. As far as measurements and utility go, the Odyssey offers more than the Pacifica. The Newly updated version spices things up as well in this space. In contrast with the Pacifica, the Odyssey is progressively agile and friendly for child occupants specifically. The hybrid Pacifica does not have the foldable seats like the Odyssey. So, if practicality is your first choice, there is still no beating the Odyssey but if you are looking for a more luxurious ride, the Pacifica holds the edge.

2020 Honda Odyssey

2020 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid Minivan Final Verdict

Who would've thought back in 2016, even minivans can run on electric motors? Well, the American giant just didn't make it possible but came out with one of the best in the market. The Hybrid Pacifica has taken the revolutionary Pacifica Minivan a step further with its class inclusive hybrid powertrain. Has opened new areas of capabilities for the standard minivan driver. It’s the first electrified minivan in the segment yet it achieves more than 80 MPGe all alone in electric mode only. The 30 plus miles of pure electric range is enough for you, to ferry your kid to school and back. The vehicle stands up to the vehicle’s promise of iconic and inspiring vehicles with world-class performance, all of this at a price friendly budget.

"Saving on fuel means compromising on driving"

Saving on fuel and getting an hybrid afterall wasn't as good of a decision as I had anticipated. It drove really went for first 1500 miles or so and then the facade of impressive built quality started to fade. Sluggish acceleration is the first thing I noticed(mostly felt on highways) which is apparently not even an issue as per the service guy at the dealership. Stalling in traffic is another thi...
