2021 Chrysler Pacifica Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: October 19, 2020

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica minivan has been on the market since 2017. It has gone through a major transformation since its inception and now stands at a much modern and sleeker form factor for 2021. It gets a notable amount of updates both aesthetically and on the features front. But the most crucial one of them all is the addition of an AWD system.

2021 chrysler pacifica hd car wallapaper

Earlier, the Toyota Sienna was the only other minivan that was offered in an optional AWD configuration. The 2021 Pacifica continues to be offered in five trim levels: Touring, Touring L, Limited, and Pinnacle. Among these, the Limited and Pinnacle trims come only in an AWD configuration, making it the only duo of minivans to do so. It competes against the likes of the refreshed 2021 Honda Odyssey and 2021 Kia Sedona.

Chrysler has been in the minivan industry for 36 years now and last year we received the 35th Special Edition of the Pacifica. For 2021, we are witnessing the Pacifica minivan with refreshed styling and added features, and the first in the segment a Hybrid version too. Power continues to be derived from the Pentastar V6 engine and is quite a handful. Chrysler was quite skeptical of the Pacifica in the near past because of the sudden SUV-frenzy that is ongoing, still!

They had even strayed on the "SUV" path by giving the Pacifica design cues. But that was a wrong detour and they quickly reverted back. A minivan is more practical, has more space than an SUV, and is better suited for long drives, so it’s even better if you find one with all these with handling and drive like an SUV, for which we come to the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica. In its topmost Pinnacle trim, you get AWD, 2 Hybrid Motors, and a surprisingly luxurious cabin layout.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The 2020 Pacific was the most award-winning minivan of the year and the 2021 variant gets the same engine with a better interior, refreshed exterior, and newer safety features, so we don’t see anything going south for the Pacifica.

The area in which the Pacifica excels is the interior which is sturdy and comfortable for long drives, the 3.6 L V6 has been around 2012, produces decent power for its class, and is extensively used by Chrysler and Jeep because of its reliability and robustness.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

On average, the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Touring trim would lie around $36,000. The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica may lie in the expensive range in the minivan segment but the smartest buy in various trim would be the Hybrid one because it includes an EV rebate of $4,000-$7,000, meaning the minute you buy one, uncle Sam cuts you a cheque of $7,000.

Power Dependability Study, which rated the Pacifica with 4 out 5 stars, which means better than most in the segment. You can opt for an extended period of 5 years or 8 years that is 2-5 years extra than the 36 month/36,00-mile standard warranty. The standard Maximum Care plan covers for around 5,000 parts and components up to 8years/150,000 miles.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Buying Advice

We will recommend you to make the smart choice and go for the Hybrid trim, with all the exemptions in taxes and the best fuel economy, therefore, is easy on your pocket as well as the environment.

The Hybrid trim offers all the features of the Pinnacle version, same power, same luxurious interior, and with type 2 charging which is available everywhere these days and takes just 2 hours to fully recharge the juice on this hybrid EV-Minivan and with cheaper maintenance cost for the electrical components, this makes the perfect buy.

Is buying a used car Chrysler Pacifica a good idea?

The Minivan segment undergoes depreciation rather fast but we’ve seen over the years the Pacifica retains its value, due to cheap maintenance costs and reliable engine, since the 2021 version comes with a refreshed interior and new features but the same engine, so if you don’t mind these new gimmicks you can opt for a used Chrysler Pacifica. The resale value of the Pacifica is also good, undergoing a depreciation average of 10-15% in its first year, which makes it easier to resell.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Engine and Performance

7.7/10

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica comes with the largest 3.6L V6 Pentastar engine in the segment. The engine is robust and has been running and tested since 2012 by both Chrysler and Jeep, producing a respectable 287 hp and 262 lb.-ft of torque. The 9-Speed automatic results in a smooth and fun city driving experience which also helps the Pacifica to showcase some sedan-like characteristics.

The minivan comes in the FWD option for all the trims except the Limited and Pinnacle trims which come in AWD. This makes it fun to drive and provides for better handling. This new addition was long overdue and finally, the Toyota Sienna has a worthy competitor as it was the only other minivan that was offered with an optional AWD layout.

The Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica lie in the same range for the dollar/horsepower segment with $115 per horsepower for the Toyota and $118 per dollar for the Chrysler. On paper, Toyota might look better, but real-life situations differ as factors like maintenance cost and service costs and running costs are also to be kept in mind, all the departments on which the Pacifica has proven its ground over the years.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Acceleration and Braking

Pacifica’s 3.6L V6 is fun to drive and contains ample low-end torque for enjoying city drives. Pacifica does 0-60MPH in 7.4 seconds which is respectable. The 9-speed automatic feels smooth and for 2021 it's even more refined. The 3.6L Pentastar unit has been the underpinning for many cars among the FCA and it has proved its mettle over time.

The new AWD layout adds fun to the already involving driving experience as it allows for better grip and more acceleration. Chrysler has also backed this fiesty minivan with the required stopping power as an electronically modulated disc brake setup on all four wheels helps it to get a hold in time and thus instills added confidence for the driver.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Handling

The unibody construction of 2021 Pacifica has been carried over that allows for a much stable driving experience. It gets a light steering that is quick to respond and at times even makes you forget of the "minivan" that you are driving! Country-side roads are also well taken care of by this minivan. Independent front and rear suspension allowed for more flexible driving dynamics as compared to its couterparts.

But the underlying fact of it being a minivan is still felt with a considerable amount of body roll that kicks in at sharper maneuverability. But that again has been drastically introduced in the AWD trims which should be your choice, if driving character sits highly on your priority list. Chrysler has done a neat job in balancing athletism and comfort in the 2021 Pacifica and it can even be compared to some quick sedans out there.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Fuel Economy

4.0/10

Despite being a naturally aspirated unit, the Pentastar V6 used in the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica manages to churn out commendable MPG figures. The 2021 Pacifica returns 18 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway. There are drive modes available on the Hybrid Pacifica, but you will have to confine the standard gearbox ratios on the gasoline models.

Fuel tank capacity is on the lower side when compared to its competition, but it's still not bad. It has a healthy 19-gallon tank that is enough juice to travel for over 418 miles without a hiccup. The Hybrid will do even better, but you will not have the same fun as revving the naturally aspirated V6 in the standard Pacifica.

Competition is tightly knitted on this one as all of the minivans offer fuel efficiencies in the same vicinity. Even in this marginal difference, Toyota Sienna comes out last with 20 MPG to a gallon which isn't a bummer as its larger 20-gallon fuel tank takes care of the dearth with added driving range. Kia Sedona, however, has the largest fuel tank and coupled with a modest 21 MPG, it can surely go places, for longer!

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Interior

8.6/10

If you’re planning to buy a Minivan, what matters more than the engine and the exterior is the interior of the minivan, and the interior of the Chrysler Pacifica is a nice place to be in. The interior feels nice and refreshed, it feels like that of an SUV with taller center consoles if you opt for the pinnacle or the Hybrid version, you get state of the art interior with Nappa leather upholstery and seats.

The second-row captain’s chairs are more comfortable than regular seats and are covered in a caramel leather interior which comes with two plummy cushions for the rear seats. The legroom and headspace are ample for adults and you can fit two baby seats in the rear seats. The seats are also provided with under-seat floor bins and also a high capacity vacuum cleaner to clean the carpet area and seats. The interior looks and feels luxurious and is very comfortable for long rides as well.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Exterior

8.0/10

The Chrysler Pacifica gets a refreshed look for the 2021 model. If you remember the 2020 model, it had front fenders from Chrysler 200, so for 2021, the exterior looks bold and slightly like that of an SUV. The grills get a new meshed design that looks better than the previous generations. The headlamps now come as LED as standard with better visibility.

The rear end is not changed much but is provided with a long continuous tailgate led strip which connects brake lights and looks refreshed. The hood is raised and beefed up for a bulkier look. You can now choose from an increased color range of 11 even 6 new wheel designs. We can say, the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica is the nicest looking one, at least in the minivan segment.

8.0/10

The Chrysler Pacifica is an excellent choice if considering safety as it comes standard with automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning, which is the first in the segment. Safety has always been at the forefront for the Pacifica and it has increased in value with the introduction of more standard safety features.

The Pacifica was awarded the Top Safety Pick with a 5-star rating from both National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). As there aren't any structural changes for 2021 MY, the wholesome scores follow through as well. Notable safety features of the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica are:

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Vs Honda Odyssey

Honda has also bumped up its game with the refreshed 2021 Honda Odyssey as it gets sharper styling, added technology, and safety features. It is aggressively very close to the Chrysler Pacifica as an overall package. Even the powertrain layouts are similar which makes the Odyssey, Pacifica's arch-rival.

Both these minivans have their fair share of pros and cons but with the recent updates that have been implemented in the 2021 Pacifica, it has more weightage and thus puts the Odyssey in an intense situation. One main aspect is the now available AWD layout, which isn't available in the Odyssey. But then again, when it comes to reliability, Honda has the lead. We leave this duo to you, as neither of them will be a disappointment.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Vs Kia Sedona

Kia Sedona is in its last run of the current-gen model as the 2022 MY has been revealed and will be a much-needed upgrade over the current-gen. But Kia should somehow hold the ground for the next year, as both Honda and Chrysler have ramped up their vans. The 2021 Sedona despite being old, is not a lousy option as it gets a well put together interior that is high on luxury and a host of safety features.

But it lacks notably in terms of performance and driving dynamics where Chrysler was already better and has notably improved for 2021 as well. This widens the gap between them. For the value, Chrysler provides for an additional $1000, is impressive and the Pacifica is justifiably the better option, for now!

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Vs Toyota Sienna

The Pacifica faces some serious competition from the Toyota Sienna, as both lie in a similar price range and similar features. The front of the Pacifica looks better than that of the Sienna which looks old and dull but the rear of the Sienna looks better with LEDs and sharper tail-lights but as we say looks depend on a person’s perspective and differ from person to person. Pacifica provides better mileage and more features than the Sienna but for a higher price point.

With better resale value Pacifica stands better than the Sienna. Another interesting feature is the AWD layout which was actually only available for the Sienne till 2021. So, Toyota has paved a lot of ways for its competition, but just like LG's situation in the smartphone industry, Toyota is outdone by its competition, even for the features that it puts on the table. Reliability and pricing are of much value in the Sienna and it even has an edge in performance and so the Sienna is our pick here.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Final Verdict

Chrysler has been dominating the minivan industry for 36 years now, and with the release of the 2021 Pacifica, the results look promising for Chrysler. The minivan provides the best-in-class interior, nice ride quality, refreshed exterior design. With the Hybrid version being first in its segment, the Pacifica comes as the smart choice for minivan buyers and a go-to vehicle for your family.

It drives pretty well and then automatic gear shifting happens as smoothly as possible. Mileage is also pretty one.

Family in style.

In normal weather conditions, it drives pretty good on the road but in the wintry weather, causing some trouble on the road and I feel difficulty in handling.

Helpful and comfortable

Mini van by name but luxury sedan by nature, it's the most comfortable vehicle I've owned in years. Drives while keeping an eye on the road to ensure safety. And when it comes to parking, it takes care of that too.
