The 2021 Chevrolet Trax is a compact crossover SUV with excellent cargo space, seating for five, and an efficient powertrain. The Trax is offered in two trims the LS and the LT, both powered by a 138-hp 1.4-liter ECOTEC four-cylinder engine paired with six-speed automatic transmission and are available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The 2021 Chevrolet Trax is now a part of a segment that has been crowded for some time now with a number of brands jumping in with their offerings. As the competition gets stiffer, so does the workload for the Trax. So, the question to ask is whether the crossover is prepared to put its critics to bed? Let’s find out.

What's under the hood of the Chevy Trax?

Under the hood of the Trax is a 1.4L turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine. While the brand says it is turbocharged, driving the car certainly does make that claim questionable. The transmission of choice is a 6-speed automatic that can send power either on the front-wheels or on all the wheels depending on your choice of variant.

The engine and the transmission are capable enough to produce a total of 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, which might seem good enough on paper but are passive when compared to the others. The power performance of the compact SUV makes it clear that it is nothing more than a spacious vehicle running to achieve its core practicality.

The Hyundai Kona sits at the top of the ladder with the maximum power, though the torque is where the Kona bites the dust. The C-HR follows in next while the HR-V takes the third spot in terms of power. The Trax sits at the top when it comes to torque as it has the most at 1850rpm while the HR-V has the least at almost double the rpm of the Trax.

How fast can a Chevrolet Trax go?

When you are looking to buy econoboxes, the time in which they can cross 60mph becomes insignificant. All the cars of this segment particularly concern themselves with providing utility and features instead of performance. That being said, when put to the test, the Chevy Trax can cross the 60mph mark in 9.3 seconds from a standstill. The pickup is sluggish and the transmission feels quite laggy during shifts, which do not help in improving the overall performance.

Another thing, the auto manual transmission is pretty odd with two buttons on the center gear stick for shifting gears up or down. I personally don't prefer shifting using the buttons; I would rather go for the conventional way of shifting manually in an automatic gearbox.

The only car that can match the quarter-mile and 0-60 time of the Trax is the HR-V. The C-HR and Kona post much more relaxed times in both cases, which do not impress the user either.

Chevy has put in an engine that is smaller than its competitors, yet the Trax is the fastest of the lot.

How well does the Trax brake?

Trax being an eco-box, Chevy offers two braking configurations. The base trim is equipped with anti-lock disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the back while the other two trims are equipped with anti-lock disc brakes in all four wheels.

Irrespective of the trim you choose, the pedals incite confidence and feels firm to press. There is no need of getting used to it as the pedal is likened to others in this regard. The rear brakes of the Trax are a bit small in comparison to most of its rivals in the segment.

Though the official numbers for the Trax’s braking performance are not available, the car will have a comparably shorter stopping distance owing to the refined brake setup and the lower curb weight.

How does the Trax handle?

Like any other ride of the segment, the 2021 Chevy Trax is the quite essential daily driver. It is neither impressive nor mediocre but finds a space somewhere in between. The engine plays no part in improving the drive experience as the sluggish pickup and slow shifts of the transmission make you lose the fun of driving.

2021 Chevrolet Trax SUV driving view

The redeeming feature, however, is the suspension, and steering setup. The steering is light and zippy and helps in maneuvering the crossover in all directions with the utmost ease. Feedback from the steering wheel is pretty responsive, which allows the driver to understand everything clearly. The suspension setup is comfortable enough to keep the car rooted on the road in all cases whilst ensuring a decent ride. The insides are adequately silent, save the excessive engine noise that creeps in when you are pushing the car too hard. Seating is comfortable and the supplied ride adds to that avail.

Is the 2021 Chevrolet Trax worth buying?

The Chevrolet Trax was one of the original entrants to the compact crossover segment. But since then, the Trax has not been able to adapt to the changing times and feels dated both in terms of design and drive, which likens it to a veteran who keeps telling episodes from his past life. Priced higher than the others, you are better off picking some other ride if you can expand your budget. But if you want the no-brainer attitude that the Chevy has in plenty, then this is definitely the ride for you.

Uncomfortable Ergonomics

Pros - "Solid list of standard infotainment features Easy to maneuver"

Cons - "Weak engine Rigid ride Seats could use more support"

Sub-Compact SUvs Extra-small SUVs are known for their excellent fuel efficiency, mobility, and load space. The 2021 Chevrolet Trax ticks all of these boxes while also being simple to get into and out of. However, the Trax suffers with some uncomfortable seats, a noisy, abrasive ride, and a back seat that may cause discomfort. I never got a call that came in from the FOB that I ordered. I've been having to contact the Dept parts. They were expected to come in one week and a half thereafter. They didn't fix it and waited for me to view it again for the entire week.
