The whole point of having a compact SUV is to provide the big car feel in a rather compact package that will also be easy on the wallet. It becomes increasingly tough to provide a compact SUV that would tick all boxes. Chevrolet tried their hand at it and thus came up with the Trax.

2021 chevrolet trax rear third quarter view

It surely doesn't tick all of the boxes, but still manages to come close to providing a well-rounding compact car experience. The 2021 Chevy Trax has been carried over from 2020 with subtle changes that are confined to the exterior alone.

Chevrolet Trax was one of a kind offering when it came out in 2015. It was an attempt by Chevy to provide the world with a compact big car experience at accessible price points. But the competition caught up far too soon and it got overshadowed. But Chevrolet has held onto the vision and has gradually improved on the Trax over the years.

2021 Chevrolet Trax SUV Right Side View

For 2021, the Trax comes forth in its best form but not so different from the 2020 model. Well, Chevrolet has discontinued the top of the line Premium trim which leaves it with just two trims to choose from. The 2021 Trax also gets subtle exterior updates and a wider standard features list. The competition remains the same with the likes of Ford Escape, Buick Encore, and Hyundai Kona taking on the compact crossover face-off.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Features

5.0/10

Chevrolet has not advanced the Trax much in terms of features. It still uses the base template from 2015 but has been adding subtle feature updates over the years. But in 2021, it doesn' tactually cut it to the big leagues with its mediocre list of features.

2021 Trax is available in only two trims; LS and LT. Both the trims have the same powertrain driving them. Even the price between them is not all that different. One good thing about the line-up is the available option of AWD on both the trims which might ring in some extra attention.

With the discontinuation of the top tier, "Premier" trim, choosing a trim is much simple and not all that difficult. With very narrow price differences between the lot, most of the aspiring customers will surely go for the now top tired LT trim. Concerning 2021, the features listed are a bit dire and barely hold on with the new wave of competition.

Which trim of the 2021 Chevrolet Trax should you opt for?

Chevy offers quite a considerable list of features in the LS trim. But given the narrow price difference and the features offered in the LT trim, it is the recommended pick. The features offered with the LT trim certainly make the experience better. Going with FWD and AWD completely depends on your choice, however, do note that with a $1,500 premium, the AWD models also sacrifice 2 MPG off their efficiency figures, both on the cities and highways.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Engine and Performance

5.0/10

On paper, the 1.4-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine in the 2021 Trax seems to have more than enough muscle to pull all four wheels. To start with, 138 hp is adequate for urban runabouts, but you would have a problem with how the engine puts down its power, no matter the configuration.

2021 Chevrolet Trax SUV has 1.4L Turbocharged Inline-4 Engine

Sluggish acceleration might put you on the line but it would become a fitting concern when you load up the car with cargo and occupants. You’ll see the engine response being quite feeble, especially while driving uphill, and you would wish for more. Chevy Trax is borderline comfortable for the highways but it was not tuned for highway jaunts which are felt by its instability at high speeds.

The engine feels stressed at high RPMs and indicates to stop! This crossover has been specifically designed for your daily urban grind and it is the best at it. Ford Escape has a cylinder less and loads of horses more. The Escape is also backed by a more athletic 8-Speed automatic gearbox which makes it a whole lot fun to drive in this bunch. Buick Encore shares the same powertrain as the Chevy Trax.

How fast is the 2021 Chevrolet Trax in 0-60 MPH?

The 6-speed torque converter does a decent enough job on the city runabouts. While the peak torque is quite early on in the rev range, you don’t get all that much juice, and the car has a relaxed approach moving off the line.

2021 Chevrolet Trax SUV Rear View

The sluggish start off the line is due to its notable turbo lag but it could have been far worse if not for the 6-Speed automatic transmission. The engine in the 2021 Trax doesn't like to be stressed and thus its top speed is tapped at just 116 MPH.

Ford Escape is unsurprisingly the quickest of this bunch and also gets the highest top speed. Buick Encore despite having the same powertrain as the Chevy Trax manages to shave off a few fractions of a second off its sprint runs. Hyundai Kona sure takes its sweet time to climb up the numbers but it makes up for the slow acceleration with a much better top speed.

How good are the driving dynamics and comfort of the 2021 Trax?

To talk about the ride quality forts, it is dismal. The crossover is not only severely harsh on broken roads or bumpy pavement which somewhat defeats the purpose of a crossover, but it is also quite choppy on the highways too, which is why it isn't a good cruiser.

2021 Chevrolet Trax SUV Top View

Its maneuverability is much better. The car is small so it is quick to turn and the steering doesn’t take much effort to do so. The car is pleasingly maneuverable in tight corners and parking spaces which is backed up by its good outward visibility and taller point of view. This makes it a nimble city commuter.

How sure-footed is the braking of the 2021 Trax?

2021 Chevrolet Trax is offered in two brake configurations. The base LS trim is equipped with disc brakes upfront and drums at the rear and the top LT trim gets discs all round. Both the setups are ample for quick urban runs and have a progressive bite to it.

2021 Chevrolet Trax SUV has 11.8 in. of Front Brake

As the Trax is a tall vehicle, there is a considerable amount of body roll under hard braking and at times can make you nauseous. Chevrolet has sacrificed bite for progression in the Trax's braking setup. You should keep a buffer distance in mind while slamming those brakes, as it takes a long 137.8 feet to come to a standstill.

Hyundai Kona utilizes its lightness and stops the quickest form 60-0 MPH. We don't have the data for Buick Encore's stopping distance but by the added curb weight it carries, it sure will surpass Chevy Trax in it! Ford Escape is equipped with the largest rotors of this bunch and it balanced out for its extra curb weight and comes close to the Kona in braking efficiency.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Fuel Economy

6.5/10

The engine and the gearbox combination does good in this department. Even if you go for an all-wheel-drive, you are treated with respectable MPG figures. It is all because of the lightweight construction of this SUV. The only thing worth noting, however, is that though the AWD is frugal as far as other turbocharged SUVs are concerned.

Chevy Trax in its AWD configuration shaves off 2 MPG from the below figures but still stands dominant in terms of efficiency. Its large 14-gallon fuel tank is highway worthy and even excretes gases well within the slated emission standards.

Chevy Trax and Buick Encore share the same fuel tank size but Trax has marginally better MPG figures which make a considerable difference in the long run. Ford Escape surprises us with the most efficient powertrain setup which happens to also have the most powerful engine of this bunch. Hyundai Kona has the least driving range of this bunch but sure is the greenest of them all.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Interior

5.0/10

There are obvious signs of a lot of cost-cutting inside the Trax’s cabin. The front seats are firm but the armrest is offered only for the driver. Also, seat adjustment is a luxury that is reserved for the driver alone.  The nicer fabric in the LT trim is an obvious choice over the cloth in the LS trim for upholstery.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Rear Seats

The rear seat of the Trax is not suited for tall adults, not suited for long rides and the whole cabin is quite narrow. Another big reason why this car is not built for the highways is the insulation. All the possible wind and road noise filters in through the cabin and is not pleasant to hear at all. There are some hard plastics strewn around, although the design touches are refreshing.

The tall-body design helps it have a bit more leverage in terms of headroom and legroom but that doesn't outweigh its cramped layout. As Chevy Trax and Buick Encore share the same underpinnings and the cabin layout, Encore also has the same fate as the Trax in terms of cabin comfort. Ford Escape is the most spacious option of them all. The notable interior features are:

  • Remote keyless entry
  • Rear cupholders
  • Auto-locking doors
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • 1 12V DC power outlet
  • 2 USB ports
  • 60/40 rear split-folding bench seat
  • Air-con system with in-built filtration system

What are the various infotainment features on offer in the Chevy Trax?

The Trax is a value-focused car. And while it has some good standard features across the trims as far as infotainment is concerned, it offers pretty much nothing else. The standard features include a 7.0-inch infotainment system with smartphone integration.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Infotainment System

The real problem here is, Chevrolet offers quite a lot of features for you to upgrade to but the price builds up. And as the price builds up, you find yourself in the territory of some bigger and better cars which have those features as standard. Various infotainment features are:

  • 7-inch infotainment system coupled to 6 speakers audio system
  • Optional Bose premium audio system
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot capable
  • OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation
  • Steering-wheel mounted audio controls
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless phone connectivity
  • Voice-activated Radio

Cargo capacity

Cargo capacity is satisfactory in the Chevrolet Trax and has a neatly laid out cabin section. There are smart storage cubbies integrated into the sidewall which can come in handy for smaller cargo.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Seating Layout

It has also got you covered for a weekend trip and the rear seats can fold down in a 60/40 ratio to provide you with flexible cargo and occupancy options. The spare tire along with emergency tool bits are stored neatly below the hard cargo floor and can be accessed with a simple hook.

The real show stopper here is Ford Escape which has more than double the cargo volume of some of its competitors. This has to do with its deeper floor which adds up to the impressive volume along with smarter seating layout. Hyundai Kona has a marginally larger trunk than the Trax.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Exterior

4.0/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Trax won't get much attention because this design has been around since 2015, and the exterior styling has not aged well. It's compact and muscular and if Chevrolet had cared for a much-needed redesign, then things would have been much different now.

2021 Chevrolet Trax Three Quarter View

If looks aren't a bummer for you then the next thing you should stay away from are the steel wheels with hub caps in the LS trim. The proportions are disoriented and while the bumpers and underbody want you to think of it as a rugged crossover, it's a hard time getting your head around its bloated looks that doesn't suffice the agenda.

Hyundai Kona is the lightest of them all and also the most compact looking of the bunch. Despite Chevy Trax and Buick Encore sharing the underpinnings, Buick has managed to add extra weight and look marginally muscular as well! Some notable exterior features of the 2021 Chevrolet Trax are:

  • 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Beltline moldings
  • Projector headlamps with LED DRLs
  • LED taillamps
  • Available power sunroof
  • Rear privacy windows
  • Available roof rack cross rails

2021 Chevrolet Trax Safety

6.5/10

This car is nowhere near the better cars in the competition when it comes to safety. It's sad to see Chevrolet cut corners when it comes to the safety features too. It performs just about enough at the crash test but certainly, when you look at its competition which has more advanced tech inside, you will be disappointed.

Nevertheless, a rearview camera, stability control, and 10 airbags may be all someone would want as standard, that's what Chevrolet thinks. NHTSA gives it five stars whereas IIHS finds it “Good” in most of the aspects. The safety features on offer in the Chevrolet Trax are:

  • 10 airbags
  • Side-impact bars
  • Electronic stability
  • Height adjustable front seatbelts
  • Four-wheel ABS brakes
  • Traction control
  • DRLs
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System
  • OnStar and Chevrolet Connected Services capable

2021 Chevrolet Trax Competition

8.5/10

2021 Chevrolet Trax vs Buick Encore

The Buick Encore is a fresh distraction from the Trax’s aging looks. With the usage of marginally better materials, more standard features, and upscale looks, this car wins hearts easily. The Encore also suffers from the sluggish powertrain which it shares with the Trax, but it is one less demerit to care of. The Encore is our choice of the two, for sure!

Buick Encore

2021 Chevrolet Trax vs Ford Escape

Ford Escape is a bigger car in comparison to the Trax and is priced similarly as well. The Escape is a lot more modern in its substance and approach as it was recently updated by Ford. Also, the styling on the exterior is a lot more tasteful than the age-old Trax. Not to forget its way better performance figures as compared to the Trax which makes it the Ford Escape our blind choice.

Ford Escape

2021 Chevrolet Trax vs Hyundai Kona

Hyundai Kona is by far the greenest car of this bunch. It is efficient and is backed by Hyundai's trusted reliability. It is more energetic and has an impressive bunch of features when compared to the Chevy Trax. All of these additions and a lower price tag than the Chevy makes the Kona our undoubted choice of the two.

Hyundai Kona

2021 Chevrolet Trax Final Verdict

5.0/10

Truth be told, it’s hard to recommend the 2021 Chevrolet Trax. Had the year been 2018, the car would still be a reasonably good buy. But it is not and the way competition has leaped forward, would mean little to spend your hard-earned money on something so outdated.

For what its worth, the Trax is a tall AWD “crossover” that you can have for the least possible price point. But if you crave more then there are loads of options better than this, starting with its above-mentioned competitors.

All about blemishes of Chevrolet Trax

Overall Review -

1

Overview Rating

Full of issues, 2020 Trax is one of those cars not able to keep up with the current line up of all other brands in terms of technology. I don't know how hard is it to eradicate the cold start issue in a car for a make like Chevrolet. It has many issues and most of these don't even make sense. For a small car which doesn't have signifcant amount of weight, handling should be one of the good aspects which isn't the case and its the other way around. I call handling one of the shortcomings of this car. Suspension on the other hand is creaky and I mean it in a literal way. If anyone out here is looking for a point A to point B car, easy to manuever, good on gas, drives noisefree and doesn't have issues like cold start, Trax is probably the last option one should consider.

Not a Chevy kind of vehicle

Overall Review -

5

Overview Rating

Trax needs to learn what exactly good fuel economy is. It drives safe and practical with no sporty mustard on the wheels obviously and not something one would ask for in a Trax. Fuel economy although is the priority for such a daily car. Unfortunately Chevy has not been able to burnish that. Comes with cruise control and AWD whereas good gas average should have been the more pressing matter.

What does a driver ask for in his/her car. Maybe good driving dynamics, should be good on gas, should have enough convenience features to make driving easier, should keep the occupants warm and most importantly it should be reliable and safe. At a perfect price tag sits Trax which has all this and then some. I drive it everyday without any issues where it has kept me warm in wintry days, drives thrifty and has just about every convenience feature one could proabably ask for in this price range.

"Best first car"

My first car could not have been better than Trax. Easy to drive, user friendly controls on the inside, ample visibility, and adjustable comfortable seats in one single package. No issues till now whatsoever.
