In the mid-size SUV segment, the Traverse is the most practical pick for you. With its premium interiors, a spacious cabin, tons of tech for safety and entertainment, and slick ride quality; it is one of Chevrolet’s best sellers . For 2022, the Traverse will continue to offer the same 7 trim levels with the RS trim offering sporty black exterior accents. It offers the most comfortable seating for upto 8 people. The muscular design is a bit sleeker compared to its muscular elder siblings: the Tahoe and the Suburban. Other than having a bold design, it has an amazing build quality with exceptionally advanced safety features.

Launched way back in 2009, the Traverse steadily gained popularity over the years. What started as a slow seller captured the minds of many with its consistency in quality. Now it is one of the best-selling SUVs in the American market. With seven trims and a lengthy list of features, the Chevrolet Traverse is back again for 2022.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Model Year has brought about minor updates with the Traverse’ exterior, namely fresh DRL headlamps, updated front and rear fascia, and new alloy wheel options. Additionally, there is an improvement in interior upholstery and entertainment features. Some of the features previously available as optional are now standard with the base L trim.

The interior is updated with a new instrument cluster, whereas the infotainment finally gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To cope with well-equipped rivals after the downturn in business that was the pandemic, Chevrolet is not leaving any stone in ensuring the 2022 Traverse sells well.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Pricing and Features

The official prices haven’t been revealed yet, but judging by the prices at which Chevy has offered the Traverse in the past, we are fully expecting it to be priced just short of its rivals. You can expect a price hike into the $32,000 range. The top-end High country trim is expected to go all the way up to $55,000 with the best features Chevy has to offer.

The all-new Traverse seems even more promising with the new updates teased for 2022. It is already one of the best three-row SUVs in the market, and the sales reports of the past only suggest growth for the SUV segment. Its’ simple and practical cabin design, neo-conventional looks, powerful mechanicals, and consistency in quality are all factors that have contributed towards the reputation the Traverse has garnered over the years. Unfortunately, the launch has been delayed by a few months, and the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse will be available this fall and not this summer.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Buying Advice

Lower trims of the Chevy Traverse offer loads at little, but fail to provide customers with enough to not leave one wanting more. Right from the powertrain to the cabin materials used, everything gets upgraded once you reach the High Country trim. Unfortunately the prices run rampant up the trim ladder, and the High Country variant doesn’t share the same value for money principles as the Base trim, but is a better choice to live with, especially in the long term.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Engine and Performance

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is expected to retain the same naturally aspirated engine it employs for 2021. The V6 puts out a healthy maximum of 310hp at 6,800RPM. It has a slightly disappointing torque output of 266 lb-ft, but its meat lies at the end of the rev range, a fun advantage of a well-refined powertrain. That engine is mated to a 9-Speed automatic transmission with overdrive for smooth shifts. The throttle is very responsive but far from sensitive. Moreover, the available AWD system makes sure that the Traverse offers amazing off-road capabilities and ample grip in adverse weather conditions. With proper equipment, it is capable of towing upto 5,000 lbs of trailer weight. Other than that, the quick gear shifts provide you with the best-in-segment acceleration, provided you have all-wheel-drive fitted.

The 310hp V-6 is good enough to take on rivals with its refinement levels and performance output. However, the Ford Explorer manages to trump its competition and their V6 engines, beating even the Traverse from zero to sixty, albeit by a tenth of a second. The torque figures of the Ford engine suggest that it is a capable tow, and could give the larger engines a run for their money with its

The Chevrolet Traverse completes the standing quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds, beating the seemingly underpowered Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. Nevertheless, it still loses out to the Ford Explorer, which completes the same sprint in 15.3 seconds.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Fuel Economy

We can expect the same fuel economy and MPG figures from the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse with an unchanged powertrain. The 2021 Traverse offers 18 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway and a combined 21 MPG. The mileage is good, and quite enough for a three-row SUV that drives the way it does. The transmission plays a major role in ensuring both fuel economy and performance as and when required. With a 19.4-gallon fuel capacity, the vehicle offers a maximum range of upto 524 miles.

Chevrolet Traverse is holding up really well against its rivals in mpg figures, despite a higher power output and towing capacity. The fuel economy offered by the Traverse isn’t too far behind the competition, and the larger fuel tank makes it slightly better than rivals for longer journeys. They might not be the best, but the Traverse’s MPG figures are very competitive against the rivals, especially considering the power output.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Interior

The slightly updated interior design gets better features such as new upholstery options, a better instrument cluster and an updated infotainment setup The top-notch standards of quality are met with the premium materials in the higher trims. The base trim still requires certain attention.

The people expect better from the base trim as well. The comfortable seats have standard cloth upholstery and you have optional leatherette upholstery. There's up to 8 person seating configuration where you have the most spacious third-row seat in the segment. With foldable seats, you have upto 98 cubic feet of cargo space.

Adequate noise insulation in the cabin makes for a pleasant experience, and the available room in the cabin is evenly divided across all three rows of seating. Interior materials get better towards higher trims as you get leather upholstery with chrome and metal-look accents. The dashboard is designed right, placing all necessary functions and buttons well within reach; the updated infotainment is also a significant improvement regarding being user-friendly. More features available in the 2022 Chevy Traverse’ cabin are:

  • Optional 7-seater with bucket seats in the second row
  • Dual-pane sunroof
  • Optional leather upholstery
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Multiple USB ports and 4G WiFi hotspot capabilities

Nevertheless, the Traverse is not the most spacious in the segment, with the Hyundai Palisade offering the most spacious front row seating. It’s mechanical sibling, the Kia Telluride, matches the Palisade for its second-row legroom, and the Traverse redeems itself with the most usable third seating row of the lot.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Exterior

The 2022 Traverse gets a fresh exterior look with new headlamps. The front fascia gets sharper DRLs and at the rear, we have thinner LED taillamps. The bumper is upgraded for better clearance where the fog lamps are heightened as well. The RS trim offers the most sporty exterior design with a glossy grille and alloy wheels.

The Traverse seems capable and stronger than ever. The design slightly resembles the bigger Chevrolet vehicles as the all-new Traverse is made bigger and better. It shouldn’t disappoint you on long highway routes or the muddy off-roads with better ground clearance and aerodynamic design.

Don't let the chiseled exterior of the Traverse fool you, as it still is the largest three-row midsize SUV. The fresh front fascia enhances the overall styling. The side profile of the SUV shows off its massive length, and with new alloy wheel options, the vehicle has only become more appealing; some optional but similar features include:

  • Fog Lamps
  • Heated Exterior Mirrors
  • Roof Rails
  • Power Rear Liftgate

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Safety

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse has a safe cabin structure crafted with high-strength steel. The cabin has 7 standard airbags with three-row head restraints, front occupancy sensor, and seatbelt pretensioners. The solid B pillar and the side impact bars provide strength to the doors and the roof which properly accompanies the sheet metal body. With a 5-star rating from the NHTSA for the model year 2021, the Traverse is more than safe as a family SUV.

It offers advanced safety features some of which are standard. The list starts from automated emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, rear vision camera, lane keep assist with departure warning, 360 degree HD surround view, blind spot zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist, adaptive cruise control and electronic stability control.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Competition

vs the 2021 Hyundai Palisade

The Hyundai Palisade can be described as the ultimate people mover of sorts. It’s tech-savvy, easy-to-use nature makes for a useful, but numb car from a driver and owners perspective. Don’t get us wrong, the Palisade is an amazingly refined vehicle that doesn’t really put a foot wrong, making it very hard for the Traverse to compete.

However, if you’re looking for a little zest during your errands, the Hyundai can’t provide you with much. The Traverse on the other hand, has plenty of fun packed into its naturally aspirated V6, and Chevy allows you to push the chassis further towards its limits than the Palisade ever could.

vs the 2021 Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride might be based on the same platform, and share a lot of similarities with the Hyundai Palisade, but in this segment the Kia seems to show a bit more focus on the driver. Hyundai and Kia vehicles generally go hand-in-hand, offering what the other can’t while maintaining prices and potential reliability, as seen in the Kia Soul and Hyundai Veloster.

Nevertheless, in this segment the Telluride, even with its sporty trims, shouldn’t be able to take the Chevrolet Traverse on in terms of raw driving feel. It still is a rather subdued vehicle and despite better figures in some places, the Traverse should be the better pick against the Telluride if ascertaining maximum value for money is not a priority.

vs the 2021 Ford Explorer

This might be the most acute competition the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse faces. Buyers who prefer exactly what the Chevy offers would be quite surprised to know that the Ford offers pretty much the same quality and perks in the Explorer. Some would even argue that the 2021 Ford Explorer beat the 2021 Traverse, and it would be exciting to see which of these comes out on top.

Strictly for comparison, the Traverse would tip the scales in its favour with respect to being a family/people mover, as it does offer more space, and more or less the same ingenuity in interior design as the 2021 Explorer. However, the best people movers in the segment are the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride, so the Chevy Traverse needs a test drive to show you exactly what it offers. The consistency shown by the model over the years is proof of eligibility enough

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Traverse has always been an SUV of regular convenience and maximum consistency. Features and specs more or less match the competition on paper, but both the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride offer more convenient interiors, while the Ford Explorer gets its nose ahead of the Traverse with regards to performance.

Regardless of its shortcomings against its segment rivals, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse still provides buyers with all-round quality, and ensures no disappointment in its drive, ride, or overall ownership. If you’re looking for something specific, it's best you check out others in the segment. The Traverse is perfect for those in need for a regular midsize three-row SUV, with driving and seating convenience aplenty.

A Gizmo packed Cross

Pros - Second-row 60/40 split-folding SmartSlide bench, a manual tilt and telescoping steering column.

Cons - While riding in the snow the traction control does disappoint and there is some road noise.

Chevrolet Traverse employs a 3.6-liter V6 that uses direct injection and variable valve timing to produce a peak 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. poor on mileage, Interior space is generous for the class 8 people can seat in here comfortably and have all the necessary amenities such as USB charging, reclining seats, and cup holders for the whole team I did not receive all the technology options that were a huge disappointment. I wouldn't recommend this vehicle to anyone unless they have lots of kids or need lots of space and don't mind paying for lots of gasoline. Outstanding

Traverse

Pros - MPG, tech, comfortable to drive

Cons - Hard plastic in the cabin, features take time to get used to

Interior needs upgrade For an SUV from Chevrolet, it lacks tact. I expected better from Chevy. The cabin has a ton of plastic which is not something I or anyone of that matter expects in 2021. The infotainment is not great either. It takes a ton of time to get used to and even when you get used to it it is very sluggish in its response. Overall, the experience was the most straightforward and quickest! The sales associate took great care of us and made sure we were able to walk out with a new car that suited our needs. The finance team was awesome as well! Will definitely recommend them.

Six cylinders are always thirsty

Pros - Reliable, good quality tires, lots of power

Cons - MPG is poor

We love our Chevy and we see ourselves in it for years to come And when you have tons of power a foot tap away, gas mileage happens to be mutually exclusive. Exactly what our Traverse does I like the all season tires and these have been helping to drive it in wet conditions as efficiently as awd The interiors no brainer have a lot of room and can accomodate 8 people comfortabl With lots of space inside, nice paint job, loads of visibility and chevy's badging, we don't have anything we would have liked to change in i Quite safe especially with those all season tires We've had a chevy in past and we know how reliable these are Great. Nothing beats the Chevy with the price We will definately be going to them if we decide to trade it or get another chevy
