The latest iteration of the Tahoe marks the 5th generation and is based on the GMT T1XX platform that it shares with the Silverado 1500. However, certain changes have been made to lower the floor of the vehicle to provide more space for cargo and second and third row passengers.

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe has a starting price of $50,295 and it entered the dealerships in June 2020. The Tahoe is a direct competitor to the likes of Nissan Armada, Ford Expedition and Toyota Sequoia.

LT variant which is the mid variant in the lineup gets some convenient features like a powered tailgate, LED headlights, Powered Rear Seats. More to that, this big SUV comes with a 9-speaker Bose sound system.

RST and Z71 are the two most value for money variants as they come with everything that a customer needs and nothing more. Both of them come standard with a panoramic sunroof, heated driver and passenger seats, and big 22” alloy wheels which give the car the perfect road presence. On the equipment list, both fairs in somewhat the same way but the differences lie on the powertrain and the drivetrain, more to that later.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Side View

Premier Variant is the second top most variant and it offers all the bells and whistles from the lower variants minus the one only the top of the line has. This includes a magnetic ride control, onboard navigation, 20” alloy wheels which look quite elegant on this big SUV. This is the variant that gets the 12-way powered adjustable front seats which paper the occupants upfront.

If most of the things are available on the Premier variant what is the top-end High Country like? You may ask. Well, as the name suggests the High Country gets some variant specific features that are more like a luxury than features. This includes an adaptive air suspension, 15” Multicolor HUD, and customizable interiors and most importantly it gets a variant-specific motor under the hood.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Through the year, customers have loved what this full-sized SUV has to offer. When it comes to the design and the performance it has the best of both worlds, off-road and on-road driving. It is no joke that the Chevrolet Tahoe is in the markets for more than two decades. But here, Chevrolet is ready to launch its new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. But how reliable is the Tahoe?

Reliability and Ownership Cost

Surviving in this competitive market since 1995 has surely proven that this SUV is for serious stuff. Talking about serious, these are the vehicles owned by the cops. They surely don't wanna hang up in the middle of a pursuit. More on the reliability is that it scored a healthy 84 out of 100 as per the J. D. Power reports.

The maintenance cost for the Tahoe comes out to be around $4,577 for 75,000 miles and just keeping a regular check on the engine essentials, the SUV hardly needs any major repairs.

Warranty

Chevrolet gives a decent warranty on its cars line-up Tahoe is no exception. It is okay to say that the SUV is fairly reliable and breaking or failure of a part is not a chance. But sometimes the machines are machines and they sometimes fail, this is where the warranty of the vehicles comes into play.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Buying Advice

Well, having a big family and an equally big family car is quite interesting. All the fun is enhanced when no one has to compromise on the interior be it on the 3rd row of seats. This will surely result in fewer fights for room in the new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. This full-size SUV has not only got better looks and equipment but also has grown in size. Talking about the number later, we recommend the RST and the Z71 to be the best value for money options. As they come with most of the features including a panoramic sunroof and a fairly good Bose audio system. RST variant can also opt for the active suspension which the top of the line High Country gets as standard.

Is buying a used Chevrolet Tahoe any good?

With that out of the way, is getting a used Tahoe a good option? You may ask. Yes indeed you can buy a used Chevrolet Tahoe but it carries all the same flaws as it would be the fourth generation. For you to know, the fourth generation Tahoe was in service from 2015 to 2020 with minor updates in and out.

Without any question, the new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is indeed a good option to buy. This SUV sure has become expensive but it also has grown in size as well as the level of comfort has drastically increased. With that, Tahoe is also capable of towing and can go off-road. All this is complemented by the gem engine which is mated to an equally amazing transmission. So all in all, the car is worth putting your money on.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine and Performance

7.7/10

Depending upon the variant 2021 Tahoe can be bought with 3 engine options. All the variants LS, LT, RST, Z71, and premier all get a 5.3 liter V8 naturally-aspirated gasoline engine which puts out 355hp@5,600 and nearly 383lb-ft of peak torque at 4,100 rpm. The other engine which is standard on the top-end High Country trip is a 6.2liter naturally aspirated V8 gasoline engine which generates 420hp@5,600rpm and 460lb-ft of peak torque at 4,100 rpm.]

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine

There is an option of a third diesel engine that is available on all the variants except the Z71. It is the new 3.0liter Duramax inline 6 cylinder turbo diesel engine which churns 277hp and whooping 460lb-ft of peak torque.

Regardless of the engine choice, as standard the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe will be offered with a 10-speed automatic transmission as standard. More to the powertrain, all of the variants in the Tahoe lineup can be opted for a 4X4 to take it a step further into the woods.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Acceleration and Braking Performance

It is hard to propel this full-grown SUV on the road but the 5.3-liter does its job fairly well. The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is estimated to take about 6.0 seconds to achieve 60mph from a standstill. Well, it is not always about the numbers on paper, Chevrolet has done their homework by providing some of the fastest full-sized SUVs in the market.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Accelerate 0-60 MPH Just In 6.0 Sec.

Being a naturally aspirated engine it sure lacks the punch but more than makes up in the refinement department. Naturally aspirated engines are also quicker off the line as they don't possess any turbo lag. Surely the new Tahoe is amongst the top competitors when it comes to out ride acceleration. This might be due to the no lag down in the rev range and the engine which pulls up to the red line freely.

When it comes to braking, similar to the acceleration it is a herculean task stopping these big bulky SUVs. Here not just the brakes but the center of mass of the vehicle also plays an important role. Tahoe being amongst the biggest SUV in size has a higher center of mass. The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe will still manage an estimated distance of 137 feet in coming to a halt from 60mph is indeed impressive.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Fuel Economy

5.6/10

A lot of work has gone into the development of this 5.3-liter engine as it has tremendous potential when it comes to performance and also it is one of the most fuel-efficient engines in its segment.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Instrument Cluster

For instance, the new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe returns 16mph in the city, 20mpg on the highway and 18mpg combined. The mileage is surely complemented by a 24-gallon fuel tank which can take the vehicle for an approx range of 500miles.

As per the data, Tahoe is indeed the most fuel-efficient naturally aspirated engine of the lot which results in a better overall range despite having a 24-gallon tank which is not the class best. Amongst the two engines, the 5.3 is the most efficient for now as the 3.0 Duramax turbo-diesel has not made it to the market.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior

7.7/10

The 5th generation 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe has seen some drastic changes in its outer dimensions which has resulted in more space on the inside. Not that the previous 4th gen was cramped, it's now even roomier. How much more space? Well, Chevrolet says that the new Tahoe has 66% more cargo room behind the third row of seats.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Seats

Some comforting features such as powered front seats are standard across the range which surely enhances the feel-good factor. Depending upon the different trims, Tahoe offers different interiors. For instance, the RST variant gets a cabin that is more focused on the utility. Whereas the cabin on the inside of the Z71 is more sports-oriented with all-black interiors and contrast stitching on the dash as well as on the seats. Other variants have an option of 5 different interior colors to choose from which add a personal touch to the vehicle.

It is good to see that Chevrolet has done a wonderful job especially with the third row of seats which most of the manufacturers forget. Tahoe being amongst the roomiest with space available for every occupant. Even the Chevrolet Tahoe offers the best in call truck with all seats in position.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Infotainment System

A 10” inch infotainment system with HD Radio is offered from the base LS variant. This touchscreen combined with a 9 speaker bose sound system is surely soothing to the ears. It's a different story altogether with the top two trims viz Premier and the High Country. They get a better screen display with a 10 speaker Bose sound system with an 8” MID in the instrument cluster for the driver.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Dashboard

That's not all, the Tahoe also comes with a rear-seat entertainment package (Optional) which adds two 12.6”- touch screen panels to the second row of seats to keep the occupants entertained. You also get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Exterior

6.5/10

What has not changed in the new Tahoe is one should ask. The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is stepping into its 5th generation and has seen some drastic upgrades over its previous generations which were mere evolution than revolution. But finally, the revolution has arrived, the new SUV is wider, bigger, taller. The wheelbase has been increased by 4.9 inches which results in better space distribution on the inside. The vehicle has gained 6.7 inches in the overall length which translates to 10.1 inches more legroom in the third row and a massive 28.2cubic feet increase in the cargo space.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Third Quarter View

Keeping the numbers inside the new SUV from Chevy indeed looks promising with its huge grille upfront with Z71 and High Country getting their own set of unique grilles. The design has surely been inspired by the new Chevy Silverado pickup. This time around it sits on fatter section rubber and the rim size ranges from 20” to 22” alloy wheels.

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is indeed the tallest and the widest of the bunch in turn giving it more space on the inside. Chevrolet has a cool trick up their sleeves to aid the passengers. The Tahoe equipped with the air suspension can drop the height of the vehicle by 2” to make the ingress and egress from this tallboy hassle-free.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Safety

6.9/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe comes loaded with a safety kit making it one of the safest cars on the road. Although the latest iteration has not been tested by the NHTSA and IIHS yet, however, we are pretty sure that there would hardly be anything to complain about the build quality. The standard safety features across all variants include:

  • 7-airbags
  • Active Hill Hold assist
  • Forward Collision alert
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • HD Rear Camera
  • StabiliTrak, an electronic stability control system with traction control

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Competition

6.5/10

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2020 Nissan Armada

Stating the obvious fact that numbers on paper aren’t always true when it comes to real-life performance. Tahoe when compared to Armada is quicker off the line, offers more features, and is bigger in every dimension. What more one asks in an SUV when Tahoe offers it all.

2020 Nissan Armada

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2020 Ford Expedition

The rival from Ford offers a tough competition to Tahoe in every sense. Be it the engine performance, the space it has on offer, and the features.

2020 Ford Expedition

The winner between the two is difficult to choose and it's better to wait for the new version of the Expedition for a fair comparison.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2020 Toyota Sequoia

Sequoia here is one of the silent cars which offers a lot but doesn’t have the oomph to beat the charts leading Tahoe.

 2020 Toyota Sequoia

Starting with the interiors, Sequoia has decent interiors but the Tahoe on the inside has better fit and finish with better quality materials. One thing Toyota lacks is the space on the inside.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Final Verdict

The 5th generation 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is more than a capable SUV one can seek. The vehicle has got the right amount of gear and options to play with coupled with the amazing ride quality due to the new Air suspensions. With that, it offers acres of space on the side, and on the outside, it looks big, bulky, and robust. No doubt it is amongst the top-selling full-size SUVs in the American market and worth putting your money on.

Chevy Tahoe, name is enough to ring a bell. Engine and transmission are in equibrium with each other. Such amazing power along with smooth transmission line, I don't think there are many brands out there having the ability to achieve that. Along with all this, it grunts that monstrous sound out of those two exhaust pipes. Absolutely in love with how it drives.

Mediocre practicality in Tahoe

Pros - Interior quality, hands free liftgate, Lane keep assist

Cons - Awkward C pillar, steering mounted button size, plastic cupholders

I never have had any issues while driving. Everything seems to be genuinely in place starting off with the performance to handling and visibility. A few driver assistance features help big time for hasslefree driving and at the same time ensure the safety of occupants. My concerns have been with minor things like button size of steering mounted controls and plastic quality of cupholders.

A ride to Magruder Corridor in Tahoe

Pros - Z71 suspension, all terrain tires, power sunroof

Cons - Gas mileage, cargo space with all seats in place, no option for beadlock alloys

What do you get when you mix a automaker like Chevrolet's experience with the unbeatable price of suv. Let me tell ya, you get a Tahoe stirred in reliability and performance. Named as Z71 suspension, its bizzare how an suv built for normal driving outruns a truck made for offroading. A trip to Magruder Corridor and everything single cent it costed us made sense.

The best from Chevy

Chevy Tahoe, name is enough to ring a bell. Engine and transmission are in equibrium with each other. Such amazing power along with smooth transmission line, I don't think there are many brands out there having the ability to achieve that. Along with all this, it grunts that monstrous sound out of those two exhaust pipes. Absolutely in love with how it drives.

At last, we went to Tahoe in Tahoe

Its absurd to know an SUV with over $65k price tag on window sticker doesn't have 10 airbags that seem to be making way in $20k sedans. All this is not stopping me to drive it but you expect everything to be perfect when you're talking about your SUV that costed you a fortune. With impeccable performance capabities under the hood along with space to seat 7 people comfortably, Tahoe is the way to a...
