The 2020 Tahoe received no changes and is essentially the very same car as its predecessor. This has only made our belief stronger that the 2021 Tahoe will receive a complete overhaul as the current one belongs to the generation that was introduced in 2015. However, a new exterior color, Blue Velvet Metallic, is added and Peperdust color is deleted. Also, there have been some alterations in the available upgrade packages.

2020 Chevy Tahoe fights with its GMC cousin, the Yukon, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia for supremacy in the full-size SUV segment.

Moving up the trim ladder will only add more premium features. The Premier trim gets perforated leather-appointed seats, heating for front and second row of seats, Keyless entry and ignition, and many other premium features.

Which trim do we recommend?

We suggest you go all out with the 2020 Tahoe and get yourself the Premier trim with the optional 6.2L V8 engine and AWD configuration. Apart from the premium features, the powertrain combination will allow you to wander off with the Tahoe to almost any imaginable trail.

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine and Performance

6.5/10

The standard engine of choice for the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe is a 5.3L Ectoec3 V8 unit mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine churns out 355 “American ponies” @ 5600 rpm and has a maximum torque output of 383 ft/lb @ 4100 rpm. This engine is capable of handling everything that's thrown at it with ease.

The 5.3L V8 powering the 2020 Tahoe is a very capable motor.

However, if your thirst for power is not quenched, you can opt for the optional 6.2L V8 that is exclusively available with the Premier trim. This unit is coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission and capable of producing 420 hp @ 5600rpm and 450 lb/ft of torque @ 4100 rpm.

Both the available engines are powerful and cruising on the expressway is bliss. The 5.3L V8 engine struggles to deliver the desired power at revs lower than 3000rpm, but once you cross that mark, this engine feels totally different. The 6-speed automatic transmission shifts very swiftly and you will not have any complaints about it. The 6.2L engine has no issues with power delivery at any range and is as capable in the city as it is on the highway.

How fast is it?

The V8 does a great job of moving this behemoth car. The 2020 Tahoe can sprint to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds. We would like to remind here that the 2020 Tahoe weighs 5466 lbs. The Tahoe can also complete a quarter-mile drag race in 16.7 seconds.

The 2020 Tahoe accelerates well for its size.

If you opt for the 6.2L V8, the Tahoe reaches 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and completes a drag race in 16.3 seconds.

The acceleration figures of the Tahoe is identical to its GMC cousin, the Yukon. Both of these cars are essentially the same car, only with a different branding on the front grille. The Nissan Armada does the 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and completes the quarter-mile test in just 15 seconds which is the quickest timing amongst the competitors.

How well does it stop?

Not the best, but the braking performance of the 2020 Tahoe is pretty impressive. This SUV comes standard with ventilated disc brakes on all 4 wheels along with ABS. The 2020 Tahoe comes to a complete stop from 60mph in 137 feet.

2020 Tahoe has impressive braking performance.

The brake bite kicks in gradually under normal condition, However, when applied under emergency conditions, the bite kicks in with the intent to stop the car as soon as possible and there is a noticeable nosedive.

Again, the GMC Yukon has identical performance to that of the Tahoe. The Nissan Armada puts in the most impressive braking performance and does a 60-0mph in just 128 feet. The Armada is also 110lbs heavier than the Tahoe.

How well does it handle on the road?

The 2020 Tahoe shares its fame with the Silverado, and it shouldn’t be surprising that the handling is more similar to a pick-up truck rather than an SUV. The available magnetic suspension on the Premier trim does well to masquerade bumps and road imperfections. However, the same cannot be said for the lower trims. The available suspension in these trims does its best to mimic its pricier trim but fails to do so.

The 2020 Tahoe cruises on the highway.

Acoustic insulation is pretty effective and results in a very quiet ride. The smaller wheels are a better option if you want a “somewhat athletic” handling as the larger tire only stiffens it rather than improving the handling. The Tahoe is also a very capable offroader. The rigidity of the structure has a huge role in making the Tahoe a great off-roader.

How much can it tow?

The available 6.2L V8 enables the Tahoe to tow up to 8500 lbs and equals the figures of The Yukon and Nissan Armada. However, if you decide to go with the standard 5.3L V8, the towing capacity takes a hit and the figure goes down to 6600 lbs.

2020 Tahoe has a massive towing capacity.

The fuel economy of the Tahoe is one of the best in the segment. The standard 5.3L V8 with RWD will give you a combined efficiency of 19 MPG with figures of 16 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. If you opt for AWD, the efficiency takes a further hit and returns 22 MPG on the highway and 16 MPG in the city.

The more powerful 6.2L V8 with RWD configuration will get you 14 miles for the gallon of gas in the city and 23 miles for the same on the highway. Opting for AWD with this engine will only fetch you 14 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway.

Again, the GMC Yukon has identical fuel efficiency as the Tahoe. The Armada sips more gas than any of these cousins and will get you a combined figure of 16 MPG. The Toyota Sequoia guzzles gas like you’d chug a pint of chilled beer on a hot day. It has a combined efficiency of only 15 MPG.

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior

7.5/10

Once you are inside the Tahoe, you’ll find wide and cushy seats that are ideal for long trips. Front seats are extremely comfortable and spacious, regardless of the cloth or leather upholstery. The second row is enjoyable whether you opt for the bench or captain's chair configuration. However, the third row feels constricted and best kept for children or teenagers.

The cabin of the 2020 Tahoe is spacious and comfortable.

The cabin offers a seating capacity for over 9 people.

What's there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment system comprises of an 8-inch touchscreen that comes integrated with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. When it comes to the standard tech, the Tahoe outshines its competitors. In addition to the refined infotainment, the Tahoe come standard with a premium six-speaker stereo, Satellite radio and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot that is capable of connecting seven devices in one go. The LT trim gets a 9 speaker Bose audio system while the Premier trim is equipped with a 10 speaker Bose audio system.

The infotainment system onboard the 2020 Tahoe is intuitive and user-friendly.

How much cargo can it store?

The default cargo space of the 2020 Tahoe, behind the third-row seats, is 15.3 cubic feet. While it is decent, Armada and Sequoia offer bigger trunk capacities. Folding the third-row seats will get you 51.7 cubic feet of storage while folding the 2nd row of seats maxes out the cargo capacity at 94.7 cubic feet.

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Exterior

6.5/10

The exterior shell of the Tahoe feels dated as it has remained unchanged for the last couple of years. However, this SUV is still handsome and reflects its heavy-duty capabilities. The similarities with the Silverado is evident in the exterior styling of the Tahoe. It is essentially two boxes with carved out edges.

The exterior shell of the 2020 Tahoe remains unchanged.

Contrary to its competitors, this boxy design makes the Tahoe look more muscular. However, Chevy could have done with a little amount of chrome in the front and rear fascia of the Tahoe.

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Safety

Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has had the chance to crash-test the 2020 Tahoe. We will update the space once the results are out.

Some of the safety features of the 2020 Tahoe are

  • 7 Airbags
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • LATCH System
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Teen Driver

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Competition

Chevrolet Tahoe vs GMC Yukon

Tahoe and Yukon are essentially the same cars. Powered by the same 5.3L V8, both of these cars have similar performance and cabin space. Hence, it depends on your choices and likings. However, the Chevy looks more trendy compared to its GMC cousin, while the Yukon offers more features in its base trim compared to the Tahoe.

2020 GMC Yukon

Chevrolet Tahoe vs Nissan Armanda

Nissan Armada is a beast in terms of performance and power. The cabin is comparatively bigger than the Chevy and the Nissan also offers a larger cargo space. However, the Tahoe is the more practical of the two because of its fuel efficiency and better off-road capabilities. The infotainment system on the Tahoe is also comparatively more updated and user-friendly than the one onboard the Nissan Armada.

2020 Nissan Armanda

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Final Verdict

The Tahoe has its faults. It's not the most spacious car in the segment and the exterior design looks dated. However, the Tahoe is a very practical car. The base trim of this SUV also comes in with more features as compared to its rivals. It can effortlessly move through difficult terrains and does not compromise your comfort. Add to that the excellent fuel efficiency and you have a car that checks most of the right boxes. Thus, if you are looking for a full-size SUV, the 2020 Tahoe is a very viable option for you.

"At last, we went to Tahoe in Tahoe"

Its absurd to know an SUV with over $65k price tag on window sticker doesn't have 10 airbags that seem to be making way in $20k sedans. All this is not stopping me to drive it but you expect everything to be perfect when you're talking about your SUV that costed you a fortune. With impeccable performance capabities under the hood along with space to seat 7 people comfortably, Tahoe is the way to a...

"The best from Chevy"

Chevy Tahoe, name is enough to ring a bell. Engine and transmission are in equibrium with each other. Such amazing power along with smooth transmission line, I don't think there are many brands out there having the ability to achieve that. Along with all this, it grunts that monstrous sound out of those two exhaust pipes. Absolutely in love with how it drives.

"Canon ball"

Such a huge and monstrous built caught me by surprise. I never expected it to have such a powerful throttle response. Picks like a sports car real quick and happens to be the best ride for highways and long streches. Handling is on sub par side which makes it not a good choice for daily city commuting but I highly doubt if Chevy has made it for daily driving.

"A ride to Magruder Corridor in Tahoe"

What do you get when you mix a automaker like Chevrolet's experience with the unbeatable price of suv. Let me tell ya, you get a Tahoe stirred in reliability and performance. Named as Z71 suspension, its bizzare how an suv built for normal driving outruns a truck made for offroading. A trip to Magruder Corridor and everything single cent it costed us made sense.

"Mediocre practicality in Tahoe"

I never have had any issues while driving. Everything seems to be genuinely in place starting off with the performance to handling and visibility. A few driver assistance features help big time for hasslefree driving and at the same time ensure the safety of occupants. My concerns have been with minor things like button size of steering mounted controls and plastic quality of cupholders.
