While SUVs have come and gone in the US car market, only a few have been able to stand the grueling test of time. One such vehicle is the Chevrolet Suburban. Touted by Chevrolet as the longest-running nameplate in the Industry, the Suburban was first introduced in 1935 and is now in its 11th gen avatar. The Suburban is expected to get a major update in 2021 and hence, Chevrolet didn't make any major change for the 2020 model. Hence, you still get a big American SUV that's made to leave its mark on the city streets and cruise through the expressways.

Despite not making a lot changes to the Suburban, Chevrolet has tweaked the lineup of the same for 2020. Talking of the motors, a 6.2L V8 unit with Active Fuel Management is available on Premier trim, along with the standard 5.3L V8 that does duty on all the other trims. The alloys are now available with a tweaked design and appearance. Other than these changes, Chevrolet hasn’t made any further revisions to the 2020 Suburban. That means you get a feature-laden cabin that includes goodies like a premium Bose Audio System, 8” Touchscreen Infotainment with 4G LTE, Android Auto, and Apple Car Play, Power Folding 2nd and 3rd Row Seats and a lot more.

Mechanically, other than the addition of the new Motor, the Suburban remains unchanged. You do get 2WD as standard across the 3 trims along with the option for AWD. Prices for the 2020 Suburban, start from $50,800 for the base 2WD LS trim and goes over $68,500 for the 4WD Premier trim. Rivals of the Suburban includes the likes of the Nissan Armada, Ford Expedition Max, and the GMC Yukon XL.

Which trim do we recommend?

The LT trim of the Suburban comes loaded with a ton of bells and whistles that includes the likes a premium Bose Audio System, Heated Seats, Power Liftgate and a lot more. All of these features make the LT the best trim to go for in the entire lineup of the 2020 Suburban.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Engine and Performance

7.6/10

For a vehicle as big as the Suburban, you'd expect a big fat V8 under the hood of the same, and that is exactly what you get. For starters, a 5.3L Naturally Aspirated DOHC V-8 Motor with Variable Valve Timing and Active Fuel Management can be found as standard across the 2020 lineup of the Suburban. This is good for 355 horses and 383 lbs.-ft. of torque. However, for people who want more power in their Suburban, Chevrolet has an option for a 6.2L Naturally Aspirated DOHC V-8 as an option to the top of the line Premier trim. Power bumps up to 420 horses in this iteration and torque goes to 460 lbs.-ft.

The standard 5.3L motor does well in performing routine tasks that includes ferrying 7-8 people around the city or cruising on the highway. However, the optional 6.2L motor, adds a bit of spice to all of what the 5.3L motor does, hence making things much more enjoyable. The 5.3L motor comes paired to a 6 Speed A/T but the bigger 6.2L motor gets paired to 10 Speed A/T. Both the transmissions do a good job of shifting through the gears but we favor the 10 Speed Unit’s slickness, a bit more.

When compared to its rivals, the Nissan Armada comes out on top of the power game. However, the most torque is offered by the Ford Expedition with a massive 470 lbs.ft. Of torque on offer. The Cousin of the Chevy, the Yukon, comes with the same power and torque figures as the Chevy.

How fast is the Chevrolet Suburban?

The powerful V8 manages to churn out enough torque to make this car reach 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds. The quarter mile performance is decent as well, with the same being achieved in just 15.5 seconds. Out on the road, it’s not difficult to maneuver this hefty SUV and put it through its paces in the city. Out on the Motorway, the base motor just about gets the job done. However, with the 6.2L Motor, things become a bit more enjoyable as the heft of the Suburban is somehow nullified by the bump in power and torque figures.

The rivals don’t differ a lot from the Suburban as well. All of them take nearly the same time to do the 0-60 run, with the Armada making the best use of it’s higher power figures. In the quarter mile run as well, all of the SUV’s are at par with each other, with the Nissan being the fastest of the lot, owing to the power surplus.

How good is the braking of the Suburban?

Considering the mammoth dimensions of the Suburban, one shouldn't have high hopes from the braking performance of this mammoth SUV. However, the Suburban manages to put up a decent show in terms of braking performance. The Vehicle displays good stability when braking hard and the pedals offer a solid feel on application. There is Nose dive as expected from an SUV of this size but the Suburban manages to show little deviation from the straight line under panic braking.

The Suburban comes to a halt in just 131 ft. closely followed by the Yukon, taking just 125 ft to come to a complete standstill. The Expedition covers the most distance of 133 ft to come to a halt. The Nissan, on the other hand, tops this list and beats its competitors by a fair margin.

What about the Ride and Handling characteristics of the Suburban?

The SUV handles its weight very well and is barely felt while driving. The ride feels smooth and light though,at corners, it struggles to maintain its pace at high speed when compared to its competitors. Overall ride quality is quite cool, smooth and light and rolls really well with negligible body roll.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Front View

The steering column is quite is soft, thereby making the vehicle easy to handle. While off-roading, the articulation in the suspension system is considerable and can be felt. The cabin feels quiet and comfortable while riding on the interstate. Optional RST package adds magnetic ride suspension that increases the quality of the ride even more and makes it even better

What is the towing capacity of the Chevrolet Suburban?

With a class average of around 8000lbs. for towing capacity, the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban, manages to tow a maximum of 8300lbs. with itself. While this may be a big number, its still lesser than the 9000lbs capacity of the Ford Expedition and the 8500lbs of the Nissan Armada. The Trailer Brake assist allows for superb stability when towing wights with the Suburban and the handling feels at home with the same attached to the Suburban.

While SUV’s as big as the Suburban, aren’t expected to excel in this department, the Suburban certainly doesn’t dissapoint as well. With a combined MPG figure of 18MPG, the Suburban ensures that you don’t have to waste a lot of time in the gas station, wasting your time filling fuel. The 31 Gallon fuel tank further more strengthens the Suburban’s cause and allows a minimum driving distance of atleast 460 miles.

In terms of rivals, the Ford matches the Subruban in the overall range and the Yukon comes in 3rd. The Nissan’s powerful motor, tends to rob it of it’s MPG figures and hence, is the worst performing of the lot.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Interior

7.9/10

With gigantic doors, when opened, reveal big and spacious seats that can accommodate up to 9 passengers with ease. While on paper, the SUV looks very spacious and has similar interior dimensions as that of the Yukon, the Suburban feels more roomy and comfortable. With a great combination of quiet interiors and a spacious cabin, the ride becomes really comfortable even when driven on a harsh surface.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban SUV Rear Seats

The upper trims get some additional interior features that make the ride even more comfortable like heated and ventilated front seats with heated second-row seats and even a heated steering wheel. Though overall the interiors are spacious, the third can become a little cramped for the adults.

With the Nissan Armada, winning a lot of the previous comparisons, it's in the Seating and Comfort department that it falters against all its rivals. In the real world, most occupants won't be having much trouble in seating 8 people but it's just that they may not like it for longer journeys. The Detroit siblings have a lot to offer, as far as Interior space goes and the Dearborn-based Blue Oval's SUV, offers slightly lesser space than the same.

How good is the infotainment System on the Suburban?

Quite good, in true fairness. Chevrolet has always lead the pack, in offering the best in terms of Connectivity features in all their cars and the 2020 Suburban, is no different either. Equipped with the latest iteration of Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment setup, the Suburban's infotainment comes in as one of the easiest to get used to and live with. It's intuitive, loaded with all connectivity features and is easy to use. The Buttons have been placed strategically as well and all functions are easy to operate as well.

Well, that depends on what you consider as good. If boxy is what you crave for and look for in an SUV's design, the Suburban will tick all the boxes for you. 2020 Suburban embodies a boxy and muscular looking body that looks sleek yet muscular. A car with these enormous proportions, looks really big on the city roads when compared to smaller cars and sedans. The Suburban rolls on a large 130” wheelbase that makes most of its rivals feel small. 2020 Chevrolet Suburban Safety

With Manufacturers around the world, raising the Safety Bar for their Cars due to growing concerns regarding the same, Chevrolet had to abide by the same trend. Hence, they decided to pack a ton load of Safety Features in the 2020 Suburban as well. While the IIHS and NHTSA may have not tested the 2020 Suburban yet, considering the level of equipment on board, we expect the passengers to be free from any worries while being driven in the Suburban.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Competition

Chevrolet Suburban vs. Ford Expedition

The Chevy Suburban faces a lot of Heat from it’s Arch American Rival, the Ford Expedition. Be it Fuel economy, towing limit or power, the Ford Expedition goes Head on against the Subruban. What tilts things in favor of the Suburban, is it’s massive price to features proposition. The Suburban offers a lot of features for a lot less price and that gives it, a big head start. In spite of the fact that both the SUV's are well loaded, the Suburban gets an edge as feels somewhat better to drive and live with, when compared to the Ford.

2020 Ford Expedition

Chevrolet Suburban vs. Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada has been famed for it’s stupendous reliability and powerful Motor, throughout it’s years of existence. Just like all Japanese vehicles, the Armada feels very well put together, comes with a lot of power and has a lot of features on board as well. But even with all those big numbers and all the great stuff, the Armada lacks at cargo space and fuel economy that makes it less practical as spending an extra $5000 can get you hooked up to a great SUV that can really perform well and can take on anything without breaking a sweat.

2020 Nissan Armada

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Final Verdict

The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban, certainly justifies it’s name. In terms of size, the Suburban feels like a Mini Camper Van on the move and on the inside, it just doesn’t run out of space as well. Chevrolet also bundles the Suburban, with a lot of fancy tech and creature comforts as standard and you don’t have to spend a fortune to get them in your Suburban. With clever Fuel Saving tech and big fuel tank, you can munch a lot of miles in the same as well. Overall, if you are one of those guys, who wants a lot o bling and fancy tech while on the move and tag a ton of friends along, the Suburban is one SUV that will suit you the best.
