The small hatchback segment is a very competitive one with all the automakers pitching in their small packages. These vehicles are easy to drive, peppy and light on the pocket which makes it a perfect companion for the city. There are many automakers who prove that not every cheap car is made cheap and the 2020 Chevrolet Spark proves this with its extensively balanced character.

The Spark has been Chevrolet’s entry-level offering in many countries for a long time. The small hatch packs in a lot of punch and has been updated according to the trends over the years. Even though the world fights Coronavirus, Chevy Spark's sales are up by almost 45.6%.

The baby Chevy starts at $13,220 and comes equipped with a host of class-leading features like a 7-inch Infotainment System with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, electronic traction control, and projector headlamps and a lot more. Chevy offers the Spark in four trims that are priced closely together adding to the value proposition of this city licking chevy hatchback.

The baby Chevy takes on the likes of the Mitsubishi Mirage, Toyota Yaris Hatch and the funky Kia Rio. We will look at how these small hatches pit against each other. Small cars are notorious when it comes to rear seat and cargo space. It would be interesting to witness the standoff in terms of performance, size, and efficiency.

4.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Spark is offered in four distinctive trims with a single-engine option. But Chevy has offered its customers the flexibility to choose between a 5-Speed Manual or CVT over the Trimline. The bandwidth is wide with the base LS trim starting at $13220 with the manual transmission and ending with the $17720 2LT trim coupled with the CVT. A point worth noting is at under $14k, the Chevrolet Spark is one on the cheapest new cars on sale in the United States, which in itself is a comendable feat achieved by General Motors and this makes it one of the most accessible cars to the younger demographic and for those on a tight budget. The Spark is also know to hold its value better than other offerings in the same segment and offers tremendous resale value even after 5 years.

Many impressive safety features like Hill-start assist, traction control and stability control system come as standard from the base trim which is essential as the emphasis of the modern day buyers is shifting towards safety, it is good to know that with all these safety features the Chevy Spark is one of the safest hatchbacks one can get their hands on right now. Chevrolet has bifurcated the features across all trims equally as listed below.

All the trims are closely priced and few features differentiate them. This makes it easier for the customers to go for the trim with the select set of features that they might be interested all while keeping the price in check which is essential for a car in this segment

Which trim should you opt for?

The trim which would check most of the boxes is the 1LT trim. Starting at $15120, it comes with 4-door power windows, keyless entry, cruise control and a host of other features. All these features come at a premium of only about $2000. This would make a better choice when compared to the base trim and would stay well within the stringent budget of the buyer.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Engine and Performance

3.0/10

Chevy hasn’t fiddled with the powerhouse for 2020 Chevy Spark, as it carries along unchanged from 2019. It produces a modest 98 horses and 94 pound-feet of torque which is not much but enough for your daily chores and city rides. The powertrain used is a smooth 5-Speed manual gearbox that complements the character of the car as a whole. Chevy provides an optional CVT transmission for a premium of $1500 on any of its trims.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback gets a peppy 1.4L naturally aspirated inline-4 Engine

We would prefer the old school manual over the CVT as it makes the Spark more engaging to drive and makes overtaking easy as compared to the laggy power delivery of the CVT.

The Spark is sandwiched between the 130 hp Kia Rio and the 78 hp Mitsubishi Mirage. The smaller engine with three cylinders makes it one of the least powerful in this lot. Toyota Yaris produces marginally more power at 106 horses and 103-pound feet of torque which isn’t actually worth the premium of $4530. The Chevy provides better value for money proposition of the lot which also scores high on practicality and fuel economy as well.

How quick is the Chevrolet Spark off the line?

The Spark sprints from a standstill to 60 MPH in a lackluster 10.7 seconds. This makes it a turtle among the lot. But we should keep in mind that the baby Chevy was not built for speed but efficiency. The quarter-mile mark comes in at 18 seconds. The manual transmission was much more suited for the Spark over the CVT, as it brings a sense of playfulness. This helps a lot in a car which isn’t high on performance.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback 60 MPH in a lackluster 10.7 seconds

Spark has been designed for city hopping and so it provided a light pedal that dances to your tunes. The output is instantaneous without any lag and sprinting off red lights or overtaking vehicles is a breeze in the baby Chevy. But when it comes to highways, it hesitates as getting up to speed is going to take time and overtaking would be cumbersome.

The Kia Rio with the most powerful engine of the lot manages to top the list with a 0-60 MPH time of 8.7 seconds. Mitsubishi Mirage comes in at last with the puny three-cylinder motor contributing to a very sluggish 0-60 MPH of 12.2 seconds. The data used for Spark is of the CVT equipped variant, with 10.7 seconds to 60 MPH mark. It would have registered better numbers if not for the lackluster transmission. The manual gearbox is a much better performer.

How well does the Chevrolet Spark handle?

The snug fit baby Chevy makes it one of the best cars to drive in a city. The minimal wheelbase to length ratio makes it a swift handler in tight spaces. Parking is also a child's play for the Spark. It would make your drive as relaxed as possible. Chevy has managed to create a luxurious go-kart here with precise handling and minimal body roll. The traction control helps in taking corners with more speed and confidence. therefore it is safe to say that Chevrolet has done a fine job with the suspension tuning of the Spark which should come as no surprise as GM is one of the top guns in the industry when it comes to making class-leading suspension setup. The Magnaride which is used in many high-performance GM products that include the likes of Cadillacs and Corvettes has become the industry standard in suspension and this knowhow clearly trickles down across their lineup.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback has clean rear design

But the Chevy completely changes its character on the highways. The steering tends to detach at high speeds and the ride doesn’t react well the wind gushing over it. You can feel the vehicle swaying from end to end and there is considerable tire noise creeping into the cabin. The 1.4L pot tends to feel the pressure on highways as high revs are not suited for the engine.

How good is the Chevrolet Spark's braking?

The baby Chevy has good stopping power for city driving. ABS and electronic brake distribution instills confidence in the driver. The 9.3-inch front brake rotors provide enough power to stop the Spark linearly with minimal tension.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback has modestly sized 9.3inch brake rotors upfront.

Kia is equipped with the largest brakes, given the fact that it is the heaviest vehicle with the most powerful engine of the lot. Spark should be able to slot itself behind the Kia Rio in terms of braking power. The Yaris would be stalked next on the list followed by the Mitsubishi Mirage.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Fuel Economy

6.0/10

We feel that GM has had a lot of shortcomings in the Spark. But some of these were to maximize the benefit from other characteristics. In this case, the mediocre engine is the tradeoff made by Chevy for good MPG figures. This entry-level offering from Chevrolet has managed to restrict its weight and thus contributing to its fuel efficiency and that 1.4-liter engine plays a major role in keeping the vehicles overall weight at bay but Chevy Did not cut corners by opting for a 3-cylinder engine which would have been lighter but less refined that the current 4-pot motor.

The Mitsubishi Mirage is the most efficient of the lot with 33 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway. This translates to an impressive combined 36 miles to a gallon which is courtesy of the least powerful engine. The powerful Kia Rio provides the least with a combined 32 miles to the gallon. Toyota Yaris is set behind the Mirage with a combined 35 MPG. This shows that the power to fuel efficiency ratio is inversely proportional at least in the case of these entry-level hatchbacks and their naturally aspirated petrol motors.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Interior

7.5/10

A price tag of $13220, reminds you to not have high hopes from the seating and comfort in the Chevy. But surprisingly they provide decent support for the occupant in spite of cutting corners. The interior layout is functional and the high roofline gives the occupants decent headroom and visibility. The second row is a bit cramped and is best suitable for children.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback gets sporty yet supportive seats but it can only seat 4 passengers.

The plastics are quite hard and the dark interior resonates with the cramped cabin. The upholstery on seats is of cloth as standard and leather comes in as an option. The armrest at the front is a welcome touch. The interior lighting helps in uplifting the rather dull interior.

The baby Chevy stays true to its cute character with a design that implements compact sharp design with a modern blend of functionality. It has an energetic vibe that would appeal greatly to the younger audience. The chrome grille uplifts the front fascia and makes its presence felt. The projector headlamps and the LED DRLs add a touch of modernity to the otherwise simple design. The huge grill is also intune with Chevy's current design language which is in most Chevy products from the Silverado series to the all-new Camaro.

2020 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback has prominent creases along the side giving it tonnes of character.

There isn’t much of a difference from last year’s model. The new updates barely give it any distinguishing elements from the previous model.

Frankly speaking, it doesn’t need much of an overhaul as the handsome creases and cute looks still make its presence felt on the roads. The whole package in a compact structure not only elevates its aesthetics but also makes it a trouble-free drive. Simple is hard to go wrong and that's exactly the philosophy that makes the Sparks design so timeless. Its easy on the yes yet distinctly a Spark hence the fact that the design largely remains unchanged from the previous model year doesn't bother us and it should not bother you either from buying this city slicker.

Safety Features

  • Electronic Traction Control

Toyota Yaris Hatchback

Toyota provides a well-built car with the only manual offering in this set. The build quality is second to none and is utterly reliable being a Toyota. The Chevy is $2500 less than the Toyota and drives better in the city. It provides better mileage and helps has a better standard equipment list than the Yaris. The Chevy shines here with a better overall package that masks its outcomings.

2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback

Kia Rio

Kia Rio is the most powerful car of the lot. It has a peppier engine, much better driving dynamics and a balanced character for both the city and highway. It was redesigned in 2018 and has remained pretty much unchanged after it. And being a Kia, quirkiness is its highlight. But if you are planning a car only for the city, then Spark offers a much better cause. The compact proportions and small turning radius makes it perfect for a city ride. But the Kia wins in the overall package.

2020 Kia Rio Hatchback

Mitsubishi Mirage

Mirage is the best in terms of fuel efficiency. The small engine complements its fuel efficiency and that's about it! Spark, on the other hand, manages to provide a balanced package for a much lower price. The Mirage also has a lackluster engine which makes it boring to drive. Baby Chevy is the champ, anyday.

2020 Mitsubishi Mirage

2020 Chevrolet Spark Final Verdict

Chevrolet has managed to provide meaning to a rather dull segment. The Spark is one of the smallest and cheapest overall packages available in America currently. It provides a balanced ride with a go-kart character and tops it up with great fuel efficiency. It is equipped with a great set of standard features with a 7-inch infotainment system coupled to a 6-speaker set, 4G WiFi and Bluetooth support.

The Chevy is the perfect wingman for city life. It is compact, easy to drive and packs in a moderate amount of punch. Chevy hasn’t compromised on the looks either as the sharp go well with the overall shape. So if you are in the market for a comfortable and easy-going city car, the Chevrolet Spark would be a good fit.
