Not everyone out there wants to live life at 7000 rpm. Some just want to get from one point to another as safely, comfortably and economically as possible. The 2020 Chevrolet Sonic is that sedan which delivers on that promise, or at least tries. However, for the year 2020, Chevrolet has given the Sonic lineup some updates to make it a better, or worse, package than before.

Overall Rating

For starters, gone is the 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine, as is the 6-speed manual gearbox. So for the year 2020, the entire Sonic lineup will be powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine putting out 138 hp and 148 lb.-ft. torque. Also, a 6-speed automatic unit spreads as standard across the range.

At a starting price of $17,595, the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic aspires to take on the likes of the Hyundai Accent or the Kia Rio but finds itself locking horns with the Toyota Yaris. It offers engaging and relaxed everyday drivability but has gotten relatively old for a modern-urbanite.

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Features

5.0/10

The basic transportation sedan, Chevrolet Sonic, is available in only three variants. At the base of the trim ladder, sits the LS trim, followed by the mediocre LT and the top-tier Premier. As a basic sedan, the Sonic comes pretty well equipped with the most basic features. The most feature-loaded Premier variant brings along with several aesthetic components to raise the standard of this otherwise bland Sonic.

Besides that, a 1.4-liter turbo-four replaces the older 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Also, the 6-speed automatic is now the stand-alone option across the range. The 1.4-liter inline-four together with the 6-speed automatic will power the front wheels of this sedan, as they used to before.

Which trim to go for?

In the entire lineup of Sonic variants, the Premier trim is the most logical one. For a price of about $3,500 over the base, the Premier equips this not-so-exciting sedan with several aesthetically pleasing features to help it look a lot more upmarket.

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Engine and Performance

7.3/10

In the year 2019, Chevrolet discontinued its naturally aspirated 1.8-liter engine. So all the 2020 Sonic is left with is a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four engine that puts out 138 hp and 148 lb.-ft. torque. Synchronizing all that power with Sonic’s intentions is a 6-speed manual gearbox that sends power only to its front wheel. The other 6-speed manual unit has also been discarded.

All sedans in this comparison derive power from inline-fours. However, at 106 hp the Toyota Yaris is the least powerful of the lot.

How fast is the Chevrolet Sonic Sedan?

As a sedate family sedan, the Chevrolet Sonic is more inclined towards efficiency than enthusiasm. So this Chevy is no dragster. Initial acceleration requires stomping down on the pedal which reluctantly sets this sedan in motion.

The 2020 Chevrolet Sonic 6-speed automatic is completely in line with the Sonic’s inline-four.

However, once there, power is consistent and quick, and the otherwise slouched Sonic starts to hustle a lot more easily. The 6-speed automatic is completely in line with the Sonic’s inline-four. Shifts from the automatic unit are adequately timed but are from being quick.

The Hyundai accent makes the best use of its CVT and flashes by all other sedans to take the title of being the quickest.

What about the braking performance of the Chevrolet Sonic Sedan?

The 2020 Chevrolet Sonic features disc brakes at the front and drums at the back, all with antilock feature. The brakes do a very decent job of bringing this sedate sedan to a halt even in an emergency situation.

The feel of the pedal and the response from the rotors is fairly proportional, and the Sonic stops a lot better than it accelerates, Als the driver need not worry about issues like nose-dive or brake-fade resulting from several emergency stops.

Despite being the heaviest sedan in this lineup, the Chevrolet Sonic is the first to reach a standstill. The Accent comes close, owing to its better overall dynamics. Toyota loses out on this front in a bad way when compared to the others.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Chevrolet Sonic is a compact sedan, if not all that lightweight. Even though it might not be in any hurry to fly past the 60 mph mark, it really impresses with its agility. The steering wheel is rather sharp for a sedan that is more about efficiency, and the basic tires are firm enough to stay planted on the tarmac while surfing to twisty tracks. Even the standard Touring suspension miraculously keeps body roll in good control.

The 2020 Chevrolet Sonic steering wheel is rather sharp for a sedan that is more about efficiency

That in no means that the ride quality over imperfect roads is in any way compromised. The Touring suspension is also pretty adept at soaking most blows from underneath. However, undulations over broken roads are not absolutely absent inside the cabin. Other than that, the turbo-four and the 6-speed manual behave as the perfect couple for those relaxed, daily drives across the city.

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Fuel Economy

6.0/10

On paper, the 1.4-liter turbo-four with its lethargic 6-speed automatic gearbox works an excuse to make up for the Sonic’s stoopy performance by pretending to favor efficiency over it. But in reality, the Sonic manages to be less economical than most other efficiency-inclined sedans.

A lot of it has to do with its heft and the lethargic automatic transmission. Sonic with the manual unit, manages to be more fuel-efficient and is definitely, a lot more engaging to drive

The Hyundai Accent is not only the quickest but also the most efficient sedan in this lineup. It’s a more premier avatar, the Kia Rio also offers the same efficiency and range.

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Interior

7.7/10

The Chevrolet Sonic Sedan may not impress with its performance and fuel efficiency but definitely does so with its spacious cabin. The availability of roominess is decent in the front row as well as the back. However, two adults will find the second-row more breathable than three.

As far as the seats are concerned, they are wrapped in cloth trim in the LS and LT variants. Leathery upholstery is an option available only for the Premier variant. Nonetheless, they provide adequate support and should provide ample comfort over longer commutes.

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Front Seats

The quality of material used inside the cabin is price-appropriate but does feel a bit dated as compared to some other sedans in this segment. Other than that, the cabin is adequately insulated, and the large front and rear windows offer decent all-round visibility.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

As a basic family sedan, the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic comes equipped with just the essentials. The Touchscreen system comes loaded with plenty of features. The responsiveness from the same, may not be the best-in-class but it doesn't leave a lot to be desired, considering the pricing of the vehicle.

Here is a list of what all features to expect from the Infotainment system:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Outside temperature display
  • SiriusXM

What about utility?

The amount of trunk space offered by the 2020 Chevy Sonic is pretty decent for the segment to which it belongs. Also, several solutions for storing small items have been within the cabin.

5.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Sonic carries forward the same design elements from the previous year without any changes whatsoever. At the front, its Camaro-inspired grille is a bit softer to match its modern-urbanite origin. The sharp, deep foglight molds surround the aggressive-looking front air dam.

Moving on to the sides we notice the smoothly sweeping lines designed to maximize airflow while providing this otherwise sedate sedan a sporty stance. The side wheel arches are filled by 15-inch steel wheels, which can be swapped for aluminum wheels or 17-inch painted ones as you move up the trim ladder.

2020 Chevrolet Sonic sedan 3 Quarter View

The rear-end of this Sonic sedan is more on the sharper side of things. The taillights are stacked vertically, being split right in the middle by turn signal indicators. A factory-fitted rear spoiler tries its best to help this lethargic sedan look a little more sporty.

The 2020 Chevrolet Sonic sedan is the longest and heaviest sedan in this lineup. It’s because of its longer footprint that the Sonic offers a lot more spacious cabin and boot.

The most eye-catching exterior features of this modern-urbanite include the following set of features:

  • Tinted glass
  • LED headlights

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Safety

5.0/10

As a compliant family sedan, Chevrolet has equipped the Sonic with enough safety features which make it earn a five-star rating from the NHTSA. These safety features, which ensure ease of mind for the driver as well as other occupants, include:

  • 10 airbags
  • Panic brake assist
  • LED DRLs
  • Hill start assist
  • LATCH
  • Tire pressure monitor
  • Traction control

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Competition

Chevrolet Sonic vs. Kia Rio

The Chevrolet Sonic satisfies as a basic family sedan, but not quite as much as the Kia Rio. For a price less than the Sonic, the Kia Rio offers better performance, more efficiency and almost the same level of comfort and usability. Also, the Kia Rio feels a lot more modern than the Chevrolet Sonic, which has aged well, but definitely feels older.

2020 Kia Rio Sedan

Chevrolet Sonic vs. Toyota Yaris

The Chevrolet Sonic is a slouch much like the Toyota Yaris. However, the Yaris makes up for its lethargic engine and transmission by its fuel efficiency. This is where the Sonic disappoints. Neither is it a lot faster nor is it extremely fuel-efficient. Besides all that, it is still more costly than the Yaris.

2020 Toyota Yaris Sedan

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan Final Verdict

If you look at the aspects of delivering on the promise of satisfying as a basic family sedan, the Chevrolet Sonic is far from it. It does a decent job of being agile and accommodating but fails to make any justifications for the things it lacks. It is more expensive than the other sedans in this segment, less efficient and also feels dated than the same.

"Hawkeye's Sonic"

Drives very prudent because of its irie gas mileage. I wanted to lease a car but didn't want to take a hit on my credit report and at the same time wanted something which would drive efficiently and all the research I did paid off right when I got this new shining 2020 Sonic in blue metallic coat.

My wife doesn't like driving it as she is not a turbo lag kinda person and on the other hand I enjoy every bit an piece of our new Sonic 2020. The best part, it runs smooth and efficient. Does not prove to be any exception for turbo lag but that is acceptable because of its efficiency.
