The 2020 Silverado improves on that. The fourth generation of the 2020 Silverado 3500 HD has us excited about its new found capabilities. With the new towing capacity and updated styling, it is now ready to take on the leaders of the class.

Speaking of leaders, competing with the Silverado 3500 HD here today are the Ford F-350 Super Duty and the GMC Sierra 3500 HD.

Which trim to go for

If you're going for the Diesel Regular Cab of the Silverado 3500 HD, then opting for the LT trim makes more sense. The WT is a bare bones trim, which has all the capabilities but very few features. Opting for the LT gets you a lot of extra features as standard for not that much extra cost.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Engine and Performance

10/10

The DURAMAX 6.6L turbo diesel found here is the same as found on the Silverado 2500 HD. This powerful engine makes 445 horsepower and a monstrous 910 lb ft of torque. A gasoline engine of the same displacement will seem pale in front of this.

The engine is paired with the Allison 10 speed automatic transmission. This transmission is not only capable of handling the torque which the engine produces but regulates the power very well. It is capable of very smooth gear shifts. While driving on a higher gear, it quickly drops to a lower one when sudden acceleration is demanded.

Ford takes the lead here. The F-350’s diesel engine beats even the already impressive numbers of the Silverado. It also beats the Sierra, as both the Silverado and Sierra use the same engine, having the same numbers.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD 0-60?

The engine and the transmission work well in tandem to give the truck a good acceleration. At the moment we don't know how much time the Silverado 3500 HD will take for reaching 60 mph from 0, we estimate it takes somewhere around 7.5 seconds. The acceleration is also smooth and very linear. The gear shifts are quick, as the driver barely feels them.

At this moment, we know the Silverado, along with the Sierra, have the biggest engine in the class. With that, they make more power than the F-350. 3500 HD’s younger siblings used this advantage to make themselves quicker than the F-250. We’ll have to wait and see how the Silverado 3500 HD performs.

How does the 2020 Silverado 3500 HD handle?

Having the same basic structure as its younger brother, the Silverado 3500 HD provides us with a very smooth ride. The lightweight steering has its pros and cons, as it does seem like a blessing in handling such a heavy vehicle, but fails to provide the driver with any feedback. Driving this heavy truck feels smooth. The suspensions work well in ironing out obstacles on the road. The rear leaf springs are a little jumpy when the truck is unladen, however. Body roll is present as one can imagine, but the suspensions reduce that significantly too.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD 60-0?

The braking performance on trucks needs to be good to handle the weight. Since the Silverado 3500 HD shares the same brakes from the younger sibling, one might assume that the braking performance here will be a little underwhelming, but that isn't the case. The 14+ inch disks brakes here are ventilated and ABS comes as standard. This means they will continue to push out impressive braking prowess for longer. One issue we say was the dead travel on the pedal, which seemed significant to us.

From the numbers before us, we would suspect that the Silverado will perform worse than the F-350. However, as we have seen before, that despite the weight disadvantage, the Silverado has been able to show us better braking performance than its competitors. We might not have the numbers for the Silverado 3500 HD’s panic stops yet, but there is hope it can triumph over the competition.

How much can the Silverado 3500 HD haul?

The new Silverado 3500 HD kicks things up a notch, promising towing numbers that are the best in class. Although the high torque on diesel engines makes them capable of towing more than their gasoline counterparts, a towing limit of 3,500 pounds is highly impressive.

The F-350 might have a more powerful engine, but nothing is able to beat the towing capacity of the Silverado. It can tow around 3000 pounds more than the F-350.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Fuel Economy

6.0/10

While the official fuel economy numbers of the Silverado 3500 HD are not out yet, we do know it will have a 36 gallon fuel tank. This massive gas tank, along with the added benefits of the fuel economy of diesel engines, we won't be experiencing range anxiety anytime soon.

The Ford F-350 might have a smaller fuel tank, but that doesn't mean it will have less range than the others. In other classes, despite the smaller fuel tank, the F-350 was able to come up to a competitive range.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Interior

8.0/10

The 3500 HD follows the 1500’s upgrade treatment from last year. The build quality feels sturdy and high quality materials are used. It does use some of the old parts, such as the gauge cluster and the column shifter. While some would say it gives the Silverado a familiar feel, it actually makes the interiors feel a lot dated for a refresh in 2020.

The driving position is elevated. The driver sits high in his seat, offering a good view of the road. However, looking down the nose of the tall hood becomes a problem. This can cause trouble in tight spaces, especially in parking. The view out back is clear, which is sufficient on the road, but the backup camera and parking sensors are required to reverse this.

Inside, the quality the interiors provide is top notch. Cabin room has increased from the previous generation, making the Silverado have class leading interior space. The cabin has perforated leather bucket seats, which are both heated and ventilated. The seats themselves seem a little stiff but are comfortable enough for long trips.

The gauge cluster might be the same as before, however, it does sport a 4.2 inch driver information center screen. It displays various information like vehicle information, audio information, phone features, etc.

The cabin is fairly quiet, well insulated from outside noise. You hear wind noise more than tire noise. The engine rumbles well when you push it, engulfing the cabin in its sweet sound, but it is fairly silent on idle.

The Silverado might have a little dated interior, but leads the class when it comes to cabin room space. The Sierra joins that podium as both of them have the same interior space. The F-350, however, does have more space in the second row. That lead, however, won't translate to much in real life use. In our opinion, the Sierra has the most attractive interiors.

What infotainment system does the Silverado 3500 HD use?

The Silverado 3500 HD gets the Chevrolet Infotainment System 3. It might have a bland name, but it is a very impressive setup. It is intuitive to use and isn't too complicated. The 8 inch touchscreen looks rather small among the giant dashboard in the truck, but it is of excellent quality and is very quick in responding to touch inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard, making smartphone connectivity an issue of the past. The bluetooth here lets you connect up to 2 devices at a time.

How much cargo space does the Silverado 3500 HD offer?

The cargo bed is among the main attractions in any truck. Chevrolet claims the Silverado 3500 HD has the most cargo volume among its competition. With a cargo volume of 83.5 cubic feet, that just might be true. Chevrolet has made accessing the cargo area easier than ever. The integrated cargo step in the rear bumper makes it easy to climb into the bay. The power tailgate door makes everything much easier. Inside, the bay is quite wide. Well illuminated by LEDs, the bed is easy to work in even at night. Cargo hooks at each end corner make it easier to tie things down. The Silverado has 3 times the cargo hooks of any competitor.

Chevrolet’s claim for maximum cargo volume among competitors is true after all. The GMC Sierra has the same cargo volume as the Silverado, but at least it's more than F-350’s.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Exterior

7.0/10

The brand new exteriors here are quite attractive in our opinion. The biggest element you will notice here are the rear wheels. The 3500 HD offers a choice between single and dual rear wheels. The dual rear wheel setup is wider than the single wheel and makes a distinct characteristic for the Silverado 3500 HD, separating it from the almost similar looking 2500 HD.

The front fascia now seems much more aggressive. A tall hood with a hood scoop right in the middle makes it stand out. The giant grille and the headlights are split in the middle with a bead which sports Chevrolet’s name. The side profile maintains the feel the front puts forward. Integrated side steps make it easier to access the cabin while not compromising ground clearance. The new trailering mirrors are a godsend, offering power adjustment and extending capabilities. At the rear is the power cargo door. While the Chevrolet name written across it steals a lot of attention, the giant LED taillights are a head turner.

Overall, the Silverado looks more aggressive and rugged than ever. Definitely one of the meanest trucks on the road.

The aggressive look the Silverado sports might not be for everyone. If you're looking for something more toned down, the F-350 is bound to attract you more. The Silverado and Sierra might share the same external measurements, but they don't look alike. The Sierra 3500 HD looks more classy and stylish rather than aggressive. To us, the GMC Sierra 3500 HD is the best looking of the bunch.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Safety

7.0/10

As the automotive market evolves, the focus on safety has increased. In the past few years, we have seen many car manufacturers integrate more and more safety features into their vehicles. With the current update of the Silverado 3500HD, it now offers many new safety features. While features like backup cameras and engine immobilizers are common, the Silverado also has features specific to it, such as the Hitch Guidance, which helps in better maneuvering the truck with a trailer attached. Other safety features are as follows:

  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • StabiliTrak
  • Teen driver mode
  • 4 Wheel ABS
  • Post Collision safety system

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Diesel Regular Cab vs 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty Diesel Regular Cab

While the previous generation Silverado 3500 HD might fall short when compared to the F-350, it is a different story altogether this time over. The new 2020 Silverado 3500 HD wipes the floor with the F-350. It might fall behind in power but leads in cabin space, cargo volume and especially towing capacity. The F-350’s has quality interiors and very toned down exterior styling, which is liked by many. If you go by the numbers, you might be tempted to choose the Diesel F-350, but the Silverado has a character which the F-350 just can’t match. Plus, the extra cargo volume.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Diesel Regular Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 3500 Diesel HD Regular Cab

The Silverado and the Sierra are almost the exact same truck. They do have their key differences, however, they share the exact same platform and mechanics. Their performance, towing capacities, cargo volume, etc are all the same. The difference between them lies in their nature. While the Silverado is more of a get work done kind of truck at its core, the Sierra is more luxurious. However, when comparing sales, the Silverado takes the lead, giving us the definitive answer to what quality the people prefer.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Final Verdict

8.2/10

Being a powerful truck, the Silverado 3500 HD is setting the bar for all other trucks in its class. With great performance and towing capacity, the Silverado dominates any challenge it faces. Comfy interiors, best in class cabin and gracious cargo space makes the Silverado one of the most attractive choices to choose from. Saying no to this one is going to be hard.
