The Silverado has always been a superb truck. It has been used by thousands of people for years now. However, It did lack quality and capability when compared to its competitors and was the only reason it did not perform to its potential. However, all that changes with the 2020 Silverado 3500 HD.

With updated styling, a new very capable engine and increased performance, the Silverado 3500 HD goes above and beyond the competition.

Competing with the Silverado 3500 HD is the Ford F-350 and the GMC Sierra 3500 HD. It is facing some tough competition, but we believe the new Silverado is up for the challenge.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Engine and Performance

10/10

The Silverado 3500 HD shares the same engine as in the Silverado 2500 HD. It is a very capable engine. It might still have the same power, it is capable of more towing capacity. The engine still produces 401 horsepower and 464 lb ft of torque. This engine has been introduced to the 3500HD new for this year.

It is paired with the same, trusty 6 speed automatic transmission we have seen before. The transmission is befitting this engine.

When it comes to the competition, the Silverado 3500 HD is running to win it all. The Ford F-350 falls behind here in both power and torque. The Sierra shares the podium with the Silverado as both of them are basically the same vehicle.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD 0-60?

We might not have a “0-60” time present here, but we can take a hint from the 2500HD’s time. With the same engine and power, we can assume the 3500HD Crew cab to reach 60 mph 7.5 seconds as a rough estimate. The updated engine makes it easy for such a heavy truck to manage a very impressive time.

The acceleration in itself is very smooth and linear. The gear shifts are quick, as the driver barely feels them.

At this moment, we know the Silverado, along with the Sierra, have the biggest engine in the class. With that, they make more power than the F-350. 3500 HD’s younger siblings used this advantage to make themselves quicker than the F-250. We’ll have to wait and see how the Silverado 3500 HD performs.

How does the 2020 Silverado 3500 HD handle?

Having the same basic structure of its younger brother, the Silverado 3500 HD provides us with a very smooth ride. The lightweight steering is somewhat of a double edged sword, as it does seem like a blessing in handling such a heavy vehicle, but fails to provide the driver with any feedback. The ride in itself is smooth. The suspensions work hard to iron out obstacles on the road. The rear leaf springs are a little violent unladen however. Body roll is present as one can imagine, but the suspensions reduce that significantly too.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD 60-0?

The braking performance for a truck this heavy needs to be on point. Since the Silverado 3500 HD shares the same brakes from the smaller 2500HD, one might assume that the braking performance here will be a little underwhelming, but it isn't. The 14+ inch disks brakes here are ventilated and have ABS as standard. This means they will continue to push out impressive braking prowess for longer. One issue we say was the dead travel on the pedal, which seemed significant to us.

From the numbers before us, we would suspect that the Silverado will perform worse than the F-350. However, as we have seen before, that despite the weight disadvantage, the Silverado has been able to show us better braking performance than its competitors. We might not have the numbers for the Silverado 3500 HD’s panic stops yet, but there is hope it can triumph over the competition.

How much can the Silverado 3500 HD haul?

With the release of its new generation, the 2020 Silverado 3500 HD has gotten a decent bump in power. The new gasoline engine also promises better towing and load-bearing capabilities. The Silverado is able to tow up to 20K pounds and carry a payload of upwards of 7.4K pounds. These numbers are for the Crew Cab WT, equipped with DRW RWD.

With the increase in numbers, the Silverado now sits at the top of the class. It has the best in class towing capacity, beating the F-350. While the Sierra shares the Silverado’s towing capacity, it falls behind in terms of Payload capacity.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The official fuel economy numbers of the Silverado 3500 HD’s new gasoline engine are not out yet. No assumptions can be made since the engine is new. What we do know is that it has a 36 gallon fuel tank

The F-350’s fuel tank might be smaller than the competition, however, it has been able to maintain competitive range due to its more fuel efficient engine. The Silverado and the Sierra have the same engine, so will share the same fuel economy.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Interior

8.0/10

All the Silverados maintain the same look throughout its lineup. At first glance the interiors on the Silverado 3500 HD seem attractive. They are well built, use good quality materials and nothing squeaks. However, for a “new” 2020 look, it seems a little dated. The layout is familiar and generic, as the competition uses the same general setup, however, they manage to make their interiors differentiate through overall quality.

Starting from the driver’s position, it is elevated. The driver sits high in his seat, granting a good view of the road. However, looking immediately forward becomes a challenge, due to the tall hood. This can prove to be a problem in tight spaces, especially for a truck this big. The view out back is clear, however use of the reverse camera and parking sensors will be required while backing up this heavy truck.

Inside, the quality of the cabin is pleasing. Cabin room is more from the previous year, making the Silverado have class leading interior space. The seats themselves seem a little stiff, but are comfortable enough for long trips.

The gauge cluster is the same old one, however, it does sport a 4.2 inch driver information center screen. It displays various information like vehicle information, audio information, phone features etc.

The inside of the cabin is well insulated from noise. You hear wind noise more than tire noise. The engine rumbles well when you push it, engulfing the cabin in its sweet sound, but it is fairly silent on idle.

The Silverado might have a little dated interior, but leads the class when it comes to cabin room space. The Sierra joins that podium as both of them have the same interior space. The F-350 however does have more space in the second row. That lead however won't translate to much in real life use. The Sierra has the most attractive interiors in our opinion.

What infotainment system does the Silverado 3500 HD use?

The Silverado 3500 HD gets the Chevrolet Infotainment System 3. It might have a bland name, but it is a very impressive setup. It is intuitive to use and isn't too complicated. The 8 inch touchscreen looks rather small among the giant dashboard in the truck, but it is of excellent quality and is very quick in responding to touch inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard, making smartphone connectivity an issue of the past. The bluetooth here lets you connect up to 2 devices at a time.

How much cargo space does the Silverado 3500 HD offer?

The cargo bed is among the main attractions in any truck. Chevrolet claims the Silverado 3500 HD has the most cargo volume among its competition. With a cargo volume of 83.5 cubic feet, that just might be true. Chevrolet has made accessing the cargo area easier than ever. The integrated cargo step in the rear bumper makes it easy to climb into the bay. The power tailgate door makes everything much easier. Inside, the bay is quite wide. Well illuminated by LEDs, the bed is easy to work in even at night. Cargo hooks at each end corner make it easier to tie things down. The Silverado has 3 times the cargo hooks of any competitor.

Chevrolet claim of the Silverado having the most cargo volume is somewhat true. While it does have more volume than its main competitor, the F-350, it shares an identical volume number with the Sierra. Although, we can let that go as both the Silverado and the Sierra are almost the same truck.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Exterior

7.0/10

The Silverado, with its fourth generation now has all new exteriors. It follows the same update the Silverado 1500 got last year. The new look turns the Silverado more aggressive and rugged than before. The biggest element you will notice here are the rear wheels. The 3500 HD offers a choice between single and dual rear wheels. The dual rear wheel setup is much wider than the single wheel and makes a distinct characteristic for the Silverado 3500 HD, separating it from the almost similar looking 2500 HD.

The front looks meaner than before. The car ahead of you will change lanes the moment they see you in their rear view mirror. A tall hood with a hood scoop right in the middle makes it stand out. The giant grille and the headlights are split in the middle with a bead which sports Chevrolet’s name. The side profile maintains the feel the front puts forward. Integrated side steps make it easier to access the cabin while not compromising ground clearance. The new trailering mirrors are a godsend, offering power adjustment and extending capabilities. At the rear is the power cargo door. While the Chevrolet name written across it steals a lot of attention, the giant LED taillights are a head turner.

Overall, the Silverado now has a personality to match its enormous power.

The aggressive look of the Silverado is not for everyone. However, we seem to like it. Among the class, the Sierra is the only one with the potential to beat the Silverado in looks, as the F-350 has a very muted look.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Safety

7.0/10

Focus on safety has increased over the years. With more and more safety features being installed in trucks, the Silverado also got the same treatment and is now equipped with a ton of new features. While features like backup cameras and engine immobilizers are common, the Silverado also has features specific to it, such as the Hitch Guidance, which helps in better maneuvering the truck with a trailer attached. Other safety features are as follows:

  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • StabiliTrak
  • Teen driver mode
  • 4 Wheel ABS
  • Post Collision safety system

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Regular Cab vs 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty Regular Cab

The last generation of the Silverado 3500 HD might have trailed behind the curve, but the new one takes the world by stride. The F-350 falls behind the Silverado in glorious fashion. Power, towing, cabin space, cargo volume; you name it, the Silverado leads in everything. The F-350’s saving grace will be it’s interior and exterior styling. People might be willing to compromise a little bit on the performance front, but when the Silverado takes the lead on everything, the F-350 becomes a harder choice.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Regular Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Regular Cab

The Silverado and the Sierra are basically the same truck, sharing the same mechanics, performance numbers and the same measurements. Their performance, towing capacities, cargo volume etc are all the same. The difference between them lies in their nature. While the Silverado is more of a get work done kind of truck at its core, the Sierra is more luxurious. However, when comparing sales, the Silverado takes the lead, giving us the definitive answer what quality the people prefer.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Final Verdict

8.2/10

We have enough evidence to crown the Silverado 3500 the king of the class. It has a certain personality which mesmerizes you to it, and then stumps you with its aggressive looks. With its new found power, it completely dominates the class. This truck is a head turner, truly an allrounder which can keep occupants comfy while delivering a smooth ride, but can move mountains if it desires.
