2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Chevrolet is a reliable brand and there haven’t been any major reliability issues with the Silverado. Plus, the Silverado has been one of the highest-selling vehicles in the United States and that automatically tells about the built quality and reliability of the Silverado.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

JD Power and Kelly Blue Book both are yet to rate the Silverado 2500HD Diesel Double Cab and the rating for the previous model years too isn’t available. Chevrolet is a trusted brand name and you can be assured of the reliability of the Silverado truck even if it hasn’t been rated by these agencies. However, it received a predicted reliability rating of 3 out of 5 which is considered about average.

When you buy a new vehicle, it is important to keep in mind that the sticker price isn't the only cost you will bear. Fuel, repais, insurance etc are just some of the examples of the costs that might make maintaining a vehicle a complete nightmare if not planned for beforehand. The 5 year cost of maintaining the Silverado 2500HD Double Cab is as follows.

In terms of ownership costs, the Silverado 2500HD Double Cab will cost you around $72512 for five years based on the estimate that the truck will be driven for 15000 miles every year. Despite being a reliable vehicle, it has been issued few recalls to its name where striker wire may not have been heat treated properly causing it to open the hood unexpectedly and another instance where the interior may catch fire during seat belt pretensioner deployment. However, these issues were rectified and most likely not to repeat in the future.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Buying Advice

The top of the line LTZ trim makes the most sense of all the three trim levels. The LTZ trim comes with great features and options and even if you have to spend more than the other trims, the LTZ offers much better value compared to the other trim levels.

Is buying a used car Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel Double Cab a good idea?

Buying a new truck isn't always what everyone wants. Some people look for a used truck which can provide them the same utility at a cheaper price. For the best value for money Silverado 2500 HD, the 2018 model is your best bet at the moment. You can get one for around 75% the cost while it retains more than 91% of its value.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Engine and Performance

9.9/10

The powertrain of the Silverado won’t be getting any updates for 2021 and hence it will have the same mechanicals that the 2020 model had. Under the hood of the Silverado 2500HD Diesel Double Cab sits a diesel powered 6.6 liter turbocharged V8 engine that makes a solid 445 horses and delivers a whopping 910 lb-ft of torque.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Engine

The engine comes mated to a 10-speed Allison transmission and power is sent to the rear wheels as standard while you can always opt for the all-wheel drive system by paying extra.

The Ford uses a slightly bigger 6.7 liter, turbo-diesel V8 engine and that helps it churn more horsepower and torque than the Silverado. The Ford F-250 makes 475 horses and delivers 1050 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the Chevy and the GMC share the same platform and the powertrain and hence have the same power and torque figures.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel Double Cab Acceleration And Braking Performance

The Silverado is a pickup truck and straight-line speed and acceleration numbers aren’t the deciding factors when it comes to vehicles like this. Nonetheless, we have the numbers covered for you just in case you happen to be into the whole speed thing. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel goes from a standstill to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds and covers the quarter-mile distance in about 15 seconds.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab 0-60 MPH Just In 6.7 Sec.

These acceleration numbers are too good for a vehicle of this size and shape. On the flip side, in spite of having more horsepower and torque numbers, the Ford takes 8 seconds to do a 0-60 mph while the GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel takes 6.9 seconds.

Safe to say, the Silverado 2500HD Diesel also does a good job in the braking area too and doesn’t disappoint. The truck gets large 14” discs at the front and 14.1” discs and the rear. The large brakes bring the 6400 lbs. vehicle to a complete halt at a distance of 134 feet which is again pretty decent for a vehicle in this segment. The Chevy beats both the Ford and the GMC in this area.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Fuel Economy

7.0/10

Chevrolet hasn’t yet announced the fuel economy figures of the Silverado 2500HD Diesel and hence nothing can be said about it. However, diesel engines generally have better fuel efficiency than gas engines and so you can expect slightly more fuel economy and range with the diesel engine than the gas unit.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Interior

9.0/10

Jump on to the inside of Silverado 2500HD and you’re welcomed by a spacious and roomy cabin. There is plenty of head, shoulder and legroom on both the rows of seats and even tall passengers will comfortably in. The seats too are nice and snug and keep you comfortably in place even on long journeys. Even with 6 passengers in, the truck doesn’t feel cramped and Chevy has indeed done a good job of creating ample amount of passenger space on the inside.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Seating layout

The cabin ambiance however is a bit dull and boring. The materials used even on the top trim level aren’t the greatest and the levels of fit and finish too aren’t all that really great. There are lots of bits made out of hard plastic even on the mid and top-spec trim and that it isn’t something that you would expect from a $50000 vehicle. Features offered on the inside too are pretty basic and we expect Chevrolet to work and improve on this.

Both the Silverado 2500HD Diesel and the Sierra 2500HD Diesel are based on the same platform and have a similar amount of room and quality on the inside. The Ford on the other hand offers slightly better interior ambiance and also offers slightly more space on the rear seats.

How’s the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel Double Cab infotainment system?

The Work Truck (WT) trim comes with Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system while the LT and the LTZ trims get the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system comes with features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 7” infotainment HD touchscreen display and Bluetooth Smartphone integration.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Infotainment

In addition to all this, the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system comes with goodies like 8” touchscreen HD display, voice recognition, navigation system and Cloud-connected personalization options. Chevy also offers a 7 speaker premium Bose sound system with the LTZ trim which takes your overall in-ride entertainment experience to the very next level.

7.6/10

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel won’t be getting any cosmetic upgrades for 2021 and hence it will retain its rugged and aggressive appearance from the outgoing model. The Silverado 2500HD has a typical pickup truck boxy shape to it but it looks extremely intimidating.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Third Quarter View

It has a large beefy front grille with the Chevrolet letters written on the front grille in large font and that gives the fascia of the truck a rather radical appearance. The truck has a strong stance and has an excellent presence. It turns heads and grabs eyeballs quickly and looks great. The Silverado is easily one of the most good looking trucks in the market.

8.9/10

The fourth generation of the Silverado 2500HD Diesel is yet to be tested by the NHTSA and the IIHS and there’s nothing we can talk about. However, Chevrolet has long been in the pickup truck market and they won’t really compromise in terms of safety and so you rest be assured of the safety quotient of the truck. The truck also comes with lots of safety features and some of the standout features apart from the basic stuff have been listed below:

  • Emergency brake assist
  • Traction control
  • Teen driver mode
  • Trailer sway control
  • Hitch guidance

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Competition

8.2/10

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel Double Cab vs Ford F-250 Super Duty Diesel Double Cab

The Silverado beats the Ford on many fronts. The Chevy is faster, lighter, offers more cargo volume and at the same time looks better than the Ford. The Silverado is also cheaper than the Ford by a few hundred dollars. On the flip-side, the Ford has the better interiors.

Ford F-250 Super Duty Diesel Double Cab

The Ford on the inside offers slightly more space and also uses materials of superior quality than the Chevrolet. If you need a truck that you’ll be largely using for occupational purposes like in your farm or for towing some construction equipment, then the Chevy is a better buy. If you intend to use the truck for recreational purposes and take your family in it on the weekends, then the Ford might be the better buy.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Double Cab vs GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel Double Cab

The Silverado 2500HD Diesel and the Sierra 2500HD Diesel are essentially the same vehicles under the skin. However, there are a few differences on the outside. The Chevy has better acceleration timings and is also cheaper than the GMC.

ierra 2500HD Diesel Double Cab

The Chevrolet is a rugged workhorse while the GMC Sierra is slightly upscale on the inside and is more suitable for people who would want a pickup for recreational purposes.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

The 2021 Silverado 2500HD Diesel Double Cab is a mouth-watering proposition. It comes with great power, good features and excellent performance and capabilities. It is also priced cheaper than its rivals which comes in as an added advantage. The Silverado does everything right and offers everything that you would want and expect from a pickup truck.
