The American public has been familiar with the Silverado name for decades now. The likes of the Silverado 1500 has been the crowd favorite for years. However, when people need to get the heavy lifting done, they turn to the 1500’s elder brother, the Silverado 2500 Heavy Duty.

Although the last generation of the 2500 HD was a very capable car, it called a certain refinement its competitors offered. That bridge in quality and capability is bridged with the all new 2020 Silverado 2500 HD. With a capable diesel engine and a completely redesigned interior and exterior, the Silverado is ready to take on its competitors.

Speaking of the competition, the Ford F-250 Super Duty and the GMC Sierra 2500 HD is what the Silverado will be running against.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Features

10/10

Although the trim line of pickup trucks can be complicated, the lineup of the Silverado 2500 Diesel Double Cab is pretty simple. It comes in 3 trims, starting from $48K going up to $63K. Each trim has the option between RWD or 4WD.

Which trim do we recommend?

The Silverado is best enjoyed with the many features and amenities it provides. However, the top trim of the SIlverado 2500 HD is very costly. So, in our opinion, your money is best spent on the LT trim. It provides a good selection of trims at not much of a price hike from the base trim.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Engine and Performance

10/10

The 6.6L turbocharged V8 engine equipped with the Double Cab Diesel is monstrous and wonderous. It makes more power than the gasoline engine of the same displacement. This engine makes 445 horsepower and 910 lb ft or torque. Putting this power to the wheels is a 10 speed automatic transmission.

The F-250 pulls ahead of the class here. With a slightly bigger engine when compared to the competition, the F-250 makes 475 horsepower and a whopping 1000+ lb ft of torque. The Sierra and the Silverado share the same engine, making the same power.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Double Cab 0-60?

All that power translates to numbers well, as the Silverado 2500 HD has class leading acceleration, reaching 60 mph in just under 7 seconds. The 10 speed automatic is what makes the Silverado capable of this feat. The acceleration is smooth and makes the driving experience very rewarding.

With a 0-60 of 6.7 seconds, the Silverado becomes the quickest car in the segment. Since the Sierra and the Silverado have the same engine, we can assume its performance will be around the same mark. The F-250 comes last with a time of 8 seconds.

How does the new Chevrolet Silverado 2500 handle?

The Silverado handles much better than one expects. Its lightweight handling can be credited to its steering. However, the steering makes things too lightweight, as there is very little feedback from the wheels. The suspensions do their work well. They minimize body roll while ironing out imperfections on the road. However, the rear leaf suspensions are a little jumpy unladen.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Double Cab 60-0?

Brakes are a very crucial part for a truck this heavy, capable of such incredible acceleration. Fortunately, the Silverado has brakes which perform admirably. Both 14 inch disk brakes in the front and rear are ventilated, making it easy to use constantly under load. The amount of dead travel in the brake pedal is concerned though. About a quarter of the pedal doesn't contribute to braking.

Being the heaviest truck with the smallest brakes isn't a good place to be for the Sierra. This drastically hampers its braking performance. The Silverado has been the ones which perform the best when it comes to braking power. We can assume it will do the same here.

How much can the 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 haul?

Diesel engines have greater power and torque than their gasoline variant. So, it shouldn't be a surprise to see the Diesel Crew Cab having more towing capacity than the Gas Crew Cab. A towing capacity of 18,500 for a truck this size.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The official fuel economy ratings of the Silverado 2500 HD or its diesel engine hasn't been revealed. Keep in mind that the diesel engine provides better fuel economy than gasoline engines, hence this truck will have a better range despite having the same fuel tank.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Interior

9.0/10

The all new 2020 Silverado 2500 HD has all new internals for the year 2020. The interiors are quite good, however, they do seem a bit dated for 2020. The layout of the interiors are a little generic, as is common across the competition.

The driving position is a bit elevated. The driver sits high, giving them a clear view of the road. The view out back is also clear, but the reversing will require using the backup camera and the parking sensors. The A pillars do obstruct the view, especially in turns, but aren’t that big of a bother.

The cabin is spacious and comfortable. With plenty of head and legroom, the Silverado wont cramp anyone in long rides. The bucket seats are both ventilated and heated. They seem a little stiff at first but are comfortable enough for long trips.

The cabin is quiet. Wind noise is more of a bother than tire noise. The V8 is quiet on low revs or idle, but mash the go pedal and the rumble of the engine fills the cabin.

The Silverado and the Sierra have the same cabin space, and enough to make them the class leaders in this. The F-250 falls behind front row cabin space, but has more cabin space in the second row when compared to the Silverado and the Sierra. However, F-250’ lead in second row spacing won't translate to real world usage.

What Infotainment features does the Silverado 2500 have?

The infotainment the Silverado 2500 HD carries is called the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system. The system is intuitive and easy to use. The touchscreen is fast and responds well to touch. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard. It is also equipped with a bluetooth which connects upto 2 devices at a time. The cabin is equipped with upto 7 Bose branded speakers and a subwoofer, which carry enough sound to engulf the cabin.

How much cargo space does the Silverado 2500 offer?

Chevrolet claims that the cargo bed on the Silverado has more volume than any of its competitors. Accessing the cargo bed is easy enough. The integrated step in the rear bumper and grab handles in the body make it easy to climb into the bed. The bed itself is quite wide and well illuminated. Each corner has 3 cargo hooks, each rated to 500 pounds. Furthermore, the 120 volt outlet can be used for power tools, adding to utility

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Exterior

6.0/10

The 2020 Silverado HD brings a completely upgraded exterior. It still has the boxy look reminiscent of a pickup truck, however it now looks more aggressive and rugged than before. The massive grille and headlights are split in the middle with a beam which proudly displays Chevrolet’s name. The rear too has Chevrolet’s name plastered across the cargo bay door. In the rear, the bumper integrates a step which is used to climb into the cargo bay. It also has grab handles which can be used for the same. From the side, the Silverado looks equally rugged. The giant 20 inch wheels look small on its body. Overall, the design changes make this Silverado one of the meanest looking trucks on the road.

The Silverado has the most aggressive styling in our opinion. The F-250’s external styling is a little too toned down for our taste. The Sierra on the other hand has a very flashy external appearance.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Safety

8.0/10

The act of integrating new and more effective safety features in their cars is done by every manufacturer. The Silverado is no exception. While features like the backup camera and parking sensors are common, the Silverado has features which are unique to it too. Hitch Guidance allows users to use the the back up camera to help align the trailer better while reversing. It can also help the driver check on it while driving. Some other features are:

  • StabiliTrak - Electronic stability control
  • Teen Driver mode
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Traction control
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Engine immobilizer

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Competition

9.0/10

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Double Cab vs 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty Diesel Double Cab

On paper, the Silverado is better than the F-250. Its quicker, lighter, has more cargo volume, and cabin space. Before, the F-250 used to have far better towing and payload capacity, however, the Silverado has now caught up in that. Although the F-250 has consistently been preferred more than the Silverado, it needs to step up its game before the Silverado surpasses it for good.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Double Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel Double Cab

The Silverado and the Sierra are almost the same car. They might have different exteriors, but internally, they share the same platform, same mechanics and same performance. They are two sides of the same coin. What sets them apart is their nature. The Silverado is a rugged truck, with a Get Stuff Done attitude, while the Sierra is a more flashy type of truck. The sales figure reflects what the public wants out of the two, in which the Silverado is ahead.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Double Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

A potent package for an attractive price, this is what the Silverado offers. The breathtaking power on the diesel engine makes the Silverado the quickest truck in its class. With amazing hands on towing power, spacious interiors and a best in class cargo volume, the Silverado offers a lot which the competition isn't able to. What the Silverado offers in its price point is the assurance of getting the toughest of tasks done. Chevrolet proudly displays its name all over the truck for the very same reason. The competition might be fierce, but they better look out for the Silverado. It's coming to win them all.
