The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab Diesel is a fourth-generation model and has similar mechanical features to its sibling rival GMC Sierra 2500HD which is giving a neck-to-neck competition. The Ford F-250 Super Dry and RAM 2500 stand in the race as well with each of them having some unique and outstanding capabilities.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Features

9.9/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD offers 5 trim levels which include WT, LT, Custom, LTZ, and High Country, priced between $50K-$72.5K. With a low price, the lower trims come with low convenience costs and safety features as well. As we go up the trim level more features are made available but most of them are optional making the desired well-equipped trim more expensive.

The Work Truck (WT) is the base model which is comparatively cheaper than the higher trim. At the same time, it lacks many essential features that are not included in the optional package as well. The WT starts at approx. $34,700 and focuses more on the performance rather than comfort and convenience.

The LT stands at approx. $38,800 with more optional features being available for this trim. The model gets an updated front grille look while a chrome finish can be seen too, which makes it look more stylish.

The Custom trim which costs approx. $39,500 is limited to the 2500 models. Besides a monochromatic look, the Custom trim gets leather seats, smart device integration, multi-zone AC, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel Crew Cab third quarter view

The LTZ comes with more features and comfort and stands at $49,100 making it a little on the expensive side. This model includes 18-inch 6-spoke machined aluminum wheels, an integrated trailer brake controller as well as compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The High Country is the highest trim with a touch of quality and class. The trim costs approx. $62,200 and comes with a Bose Premium Sound System, wireless charging, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Besides being available as a Crew Cab only, it even offers a standard All-Wheel Drive (AWD).

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The Chevrolet Silverado has not received a reliability rating by the J.D. Power Rating. Chevrolet has equipped the truck with a strong chassis and a dependable hold and braking system but it lacks many safety features making its rivals a safer place to be in. The handling and control on an uneven road are rather unpleasant and uncomfortable so high-speed driving is not recommended on such roads.

For a truck costing $50K to own, the cost of maintaining it for 5 years is around $49K. Although this seems high, it's actually not. If the cost of maintaining a vehicle for 5 years comes around the sticker price, it's considered the sweet spot. The Crew Cab maintenance costs are comparatively better than its other counterparts.

Warranty

Chevrolet has offered a very generous warranty package which offers more than any of its rivals. Besides offering corrosion as well as a basic warranty for 3-years or 36,000 miles, the Silverado also comes with a drivetrain warranty which is valid for a period of 5-years or 60,000 miles, whichever is less.

Powertrain Warranty

7 years/ 100,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-hour Roadside Assistance

The safety issue which was raised due to lack of features is covered up with a long list of warranties. A 24-hours roadside assistance warranty is provided for 5-years or 60,000 miles. Chevrolet has offered many warranties but it seems like they forgot to offer complimentary maintenance which is present as a service for almost every vehicle.

Miles per Dollar

Being one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in this segment makes things easy for the Silverado in this segment as it is surely going to come with a benefit of low fuel cost. Even though the GMC Sierra has similar mechanical specifications, the Silverado still manages to be better at fuel efficiency.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Buying Advice

Chevrolet has equipped the Silverado with fewer features especially the lower-trim making the trims hard to choose. If you go for the Base model, you will find a lack of essential features and if you choose High Country then the cost is quite high, opening options for the GMC Sierra Denali trim which has more luxury, features, and comfort. The LTZ which is a well-equipped vehicle assuring safety, comfort, and entertainment comes as the most reasonable choice.

Is buying a used Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel a good idea?

With a powerful engine, muscular payload capacity, and substantial commitment, the Silverado stands as a heavy-duty truck with the strongest resale value. After 5-years of freehold, the vehicle retains approx. 60% of its original value which is mind-boggling. With persistent performance and fine styling, the Silverado is definitely the best choice in this segment. For the best value for money Silverado 2500 HD, the 2018 model is your best bet at the moment. You can get one for around 75% the cost while it retains more than 91% of its value.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Engine and Performance

9.9/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado will be seen with a more refined and stable engine. The 6.6L Duramax diesel engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission gets all the work done smoothly. A gasoline V8 engine is a new inline which is good as an option for people looking for moderate power under the hood. The 6.6L Duramax engine churns out 445HP and 910lb-ft of torque.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab engine

People looking for a beast with heavy payload and towing capacity can get the answer in the Silverado diesel which has a payload of 3579lbs and 18,500lbs of towing capacity. All the trims have a standard RWD and optional AWD except the High Country which has a standard AWD drivetrain. The 2021 model has a flawless powertrain for its class.

The Ford F-250 Super Duty gives the most power, payload capacity, and torque with its 6.7L V8 engine. Although the Silverado has a name for its all-powerful hood, it offers similar power to the Sierra and Ram 2500. With a similar towing capacity to its rivals, the Silverado gets an overall good rating.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel Acceleration and Braking Performance

The 2021 model with its 10-speed automatic transmission is expected to boast of an acceleration that covers 0-60mph in approx. 7.9-seconds which would be surprisingly impressive for its class. The ride and handling are quite rough and the truck might get bouncy especially at high speeds. We hope that the 2021 Silverado comes with a more stable, predictable, and easy handling.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab 0-60 mph just in 7.9 sec.

The braking systems somewhat cover the handling issues faced. During off-road rides, the brakes feel controlled and smooth and allow the Silverado to get through the uneven terrain effortlessly. The 2021 Silverado is expected to come back with the same braking system and honestly, that is just fine as the current system delivers well for a pick-up truck.

The Silverado is one of the fastest heavy-duty pick-up trucks with smooth brake control, making it a fine choice in its class for heavy off-road work.

On the other hand, the RAM 2500 gives a slow start with a moderate braking system. The F-250 and Sierra come with engaging and predictable rides that are good for long route travels.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Fuel Economy

7.0/10

With a maximum fuel capacity of 36.2L, the vehicle manages to give a mileage of 14mpg in the city and 19mpg on the highway making it a very attractive deal. The upcoming Silverado might surprise us with a more efficient ride as a good mileage is one of the top priorities for a heavy-duty truck.

The Silverado and Sierra are the most suitable in this class if you are looking for fewer fuel-stops and the F-250 follows the lead with a modest return of 18 mpg on the highway. RAM 2500 gives a combined mileage of 13mph which is a rather poor response in comparison to its rivals.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Interior

9.0/10

Chevrolet overlooked the cabin style, texture, and material used in making the interior. The dashboard has an unmanaged and low-quality feel in the lower trims which brings down the interior appeal. The front seats are comfortable and spacious but the same cannot be said about the rear seats as they do not offer sufficient space for adults.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab dashboard

The 2021 Silverado 2500HD really needs to work on the interior as the need for heavy towing capacity does not justify a low-quality interior feel. The higher trims are expected to carry more convenient features with a tech-loaded quality-interior.

A pick-up truck is expected to offer a sufficient cargo capacity and the Silverado has managed to satisfy its customer by offering 3862 lbs of cargo space which is similar to its rivals if not less. The cabin comes with moderate storage for daily products.

The seating capacity offered by the Silverado is the most amongst its rivals. The F-250 and Sierra also give sufficient cabin space whereas the RAM 2500 has a more congested and uncomfortable seating space in its class.

How’s the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system feels a little outdated and unresponsive to use. The 2021 Silverado 2500HD is expected to come with an upgraded 8-inch infotainment system with a standard 6-speaker sound system.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab infotainment system

With an aim to challenge the tech-loaded Sierra we might get some much needed, interesting, and improved features in the forthcoming version which could include wireless charging, Wi-Fi connectivity, a satellite radio, MyLink, a navigation system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Safety

8.9/10

The Silverado has not been tested by the NHTSA or IIHS but the overall safety features offered in the vehicle do feel insufficient. Most of the features offered are available for higher trims leaving the base trim to provide an unsafe ride.

A multi-view camera which has a capacity of 15 different angles is an attractive feature on offer. Other vehicles in this class offer better safety assurance with more features. The 2021 model needs more safety features to stay strong in the competition.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Competition

8.2/10

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel vs 2020 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCrew Diesel

Ford F-250 offers a stronger powertrain with a better towing and payload capacity making it a favorable choice for heavy-duty and off-road work.

2020 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCrew Diesel

The Chevy Silverado, in order to make a strong stand, gives an impressive fuel mileage with a more spacious cabin. While both the vehicles are reliable and stylish, the F-250 makes for a slightly better and reasonable choice.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel vs GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel

Both the vehicles offer similar power performance, ground clearance, wheelbase and ride but the Silverado is more fuel-efficient and spacious which is good for long-routes.

2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel

On the other hand, the GMC Sierra gives high value for money with its tech-loaded luxury cabin and well-equipped safety features.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD vs 2020 RAM 2500 Crew Cab Diesel

The Silverado 2500HD is clearly a stronger contender in terms of performance as it offers a stronger engine, more ground clearance, a spacious cabin, and better fuel efficiency.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab is a complete package where the drawbacks of one segment are covered in another segment. Although the interior design and ride smoothness are not very desirable, we expect significant changes to experience an unbeatable ride.

A powerful engine that is fuel-efficient and a spacious cabin makes it an impressive choice. The 2021 Silverado is expected to come with added standard features and an enhanced ride experience making the vehicle a tougher opponent and a worthy contender for the top spot.
