The Silverado is a name which has been with the American public for decades. While the Silverado 1500 is a very capable car and a crowd favorite, people turn to its elder brother, The Silverado 2500 HD, when they need to get some real work done. With a bigger engine and more towing capacity, this is what the younger brother wishes to be when it grows up

Although the last generation of the Silverado 2500 HD was a good truck, it lacked refinement and capability when compared to its competition. This all changes with the 2020 Silverado 2500 HD. Armed with a capable diesel engine and a new redesigned exterior and interior, the SIlverado is ready to take on its competition.

Speaking of the competition, the Ford F-250 Super Duty and the GMC Sierra 2500 HD is what the Silverado will be running against.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Features

10/10

Although the trim line of pickup trucks can be complicated, the lineup of the Silverado 2500 diesel crew cab is fairly straightforward. Chevrolet offers it in 4 trims. Almost all have the choice between RWD or 4WD, except the High Country, which is only available in 4WD. The list of standard features keeps on increasing the higher we go in trims.

Which trim do we recommend?

Although the base trims are better priced and provide better value for money, they lack a lot of features which will work to elevate the Silverado experience. For our money, we would choose the LTZ. Although its up the price ladder, it incorporates a lot of features as standard which takes the whole ownership experience of the Silverado to a whole other level.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Engine and Performance

10/10

The 6.6L turbocharged V8 engine found under the hood is quite impressive. It makes more power than the gasoline engine found in other variants, despite having the same displacement. The 445 horsepower it makes is impressive, but what really steals the show is the whopping 910 lb ft of torque this engine is capable of. Putting all that power to the wheels is a 10 speed automatic transmission. The transmission is quick, ready to go at a moment’s notice.

The gasoline variant of the F-250 might have fallen behind the class in power, but its a different story here. The diesel F-250 has amazing horsepower and torque, making it the class leader. Its capable of this while being the least expensive car in the class.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Crew Cab 0-60?

All that power and torque translates well in numbers, as this heavy Crew cab is able to reach 60 mph in a little less than 7 seconds. The 10 speed automatic transmission is evidently responsible for this amazing time. The acceleration is smooth and makes you feel confident when reaching such high speeds in a truck this heavy.

The Silverado is the best in class. The difference between it and the F-250 is staggering. We cannot officially place the Sierra in this comparison, however, since it has the same weight and mechanics as the Silverado, we can make an educated guess where it will be placed.

How does the new Chevrolet Silverado 2500 handle?

The Silverado feels much lighter to drive than it actually is. This is mostly thanks to its lightweight steering. The steering however has the potential to be a little too lightweight, as it eliminates any feedback from the wheels, which can hamper the driving experience at times. The suspensions are on point though. The stiff front suspension irons out all the imperfection on the road. While the rear leaf suspension works well underload, it is a little unstable unladen.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Crew Cab 60-0?

Brakes need to be on point for a truck as quick as the SIlverado 2500 HD. The 14 inch ventilated disk brakes found on the truck have no problem handling the weight of the truck. Armed with 4 wheel ABS, the brakes keep the truck stable in sudden braking. However, even though the brakes are good, the dead travel on the pedal is a little substantial. Around a quarter of the pedal doesn't contribute to braking.

Since the stopping distance of the trucks in this class are not known, we cannot definitively say which truck performs better here. However, taking the braking performance of the other variants of the 2500 HD as an example, it can be assumed that the Silverado will have the best braking performance here. Since the Sierra is very similar to the Silverado, it can be assumed its braking performance will be nearby, with the F-250 coming in dead last.

How much can the 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 diesel haul?

Diesel engines have greater power and torque than their gasoline variant. So, it shouldn't be a surprise to see the Diesel Crew Cab having more towing capacity than the Gas Crew Cab. A towing capacity of 18,500 for a truck this size.

This diesel engine is what the Silverado needed to bridge the gap between it and the F-250. All three of the trucks in the class have identical towing capacities now.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Fuel Economy

7.0/10

Official fuel economy numbers of the Silverado 2500 HD are not known, as of this moment. Keep in mind that the diesel engine provides better fuel economy than gasoline engines, hence this truck will have a better range despite having the same fuel tank.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Interior

9.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet 2500 HD gets all new interiors. However, even though the quality of the materials used are good, the interiors seem a bit dated. The layout seems a bit generic as it is the same to others in the class.

Starting with the driving position, it is elevated. The driver sits high in their seat, giving them a clear view of the road. The view out back is also quite clear, however one will need to rely on the backup camera and parking sensors to reverse. The A pillars do obstruct the view, especially in turns, but aren’t that big of a bother.

The cabin is spacious and makes good of the room provided. There is plenty of head and leg room, even in the second row. The front bucket seats are leather and are both heated and cooled. Rear seats are heated too. The seats themselves are a little stiff but feel comfortable enough for long trips.

The cabin is quiet, with the majority of noise being from the wind. The V8 is quiet enough on idle, but push the engine enough and the rumble of the glorious V8 engulfs the cabin.

Cabin space of each vehicle is adequate. However, the Silverado and the Sierra provide more front row cabin space than the F-250. The Ford F-250 leads in second row space, however, the increment won't really make a real life difference in usage.

What Infotainment features does the Silverado 2500 have?

Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system, which comes in the Silverado, might not have a flashy name, but is actually a really good system. It is quick and intuitive to use. The 8 inch touchscreen quickly responds to touch inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard, and along with a bluetooth which can connect up to 2 devices at the same time, connectivity your phone to the infotainment system won't be a problem at all. 7 Bose branded speakers along with a subwoofer provide plenty of sound.

How much cargo space does the Silverado 2500 offer?

The cargo bed of a pickup is usually one of its main attractions. Chevrolet claims the Silverado 2500 HD’s has more cargo volume than any of its competitors. The cargo bay is wide, making it easy to store largo objects in. The itself is well illuminated and easy to climb into, which increases its utility. Each corner has 3 cargo hooks, rated at 500 pounds each, making a total of 12 hooks in the cab.

Chevrolet’s claim of having the most volume among its competitors is somewhat true, as the Silverado 2500 HD has more cargo volume than the Ford F-250, making it the class leader. However, the Sierra 2500 HD has the same amount of cargo volume, which is to be expected, since it is the Silverado’s sister car.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Exterior

6.0/10

The upgrades for the 2020 Silverado HD continue, as the whole exterior has been revamped. The Silverado does have the same boxy look reminiscent of a pickup truck, however it now has a looks more aggressive and rugged than before. The massive grille and headlights are split in the middle by a beam which wears Chevrolet’s name proudly. The hood scoop is functional, cooling down the massive engine under the hood. The Silverado looks equally rugged from the side, making the giant 20 inch wheels look small on its body. Out back, the Chevrolet name is plastered on the cargo bay door. The rear bumper integrates a step to make climbing into the cargo area much simpler.

Overall, the design changes make this Silverado one of the meanest looking trucks on the road.

The F-250 doesn't benefit from being the lightest in the class, as it is still slower than the Silverado. Ground clearance wise, the F-250 again falls behind. In terms of outward styling, the F-250 has a very toney down look and the Sierra seems a bit flashy to us. The Silverado is a bit too aggressive when it comes to its exteriors, but to us it feels just right.,

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Safety

8.0/10

As the market grows, manufacturers have been including more and more safety features in their vehicles. The Silverado too is fitted with a plethora of safety features. While features like Backup camera or parking sensors are common, there are some which make more sense on a pickup the size of the Silverado 2500 HD. Hitch Guidance allows users to use the the back up camera to help align the trailer better while reversing. It can also help the driver check on it while driving. Some other features are:

  • StabiliTrak - Electronic stability control
  • Teen Driver mode
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Traction control
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Engine immobilizer

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Crew Cab vs 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty Diesel Crew Cab

Compare them directly and the Silverado will beat the F-250 easily. It is ahead in power, acceleration, cargo space, cabin space and presumably braking power as well. However, there is a reason that the F-250 outsells the Silverado 2500 HD. Ford has made an irreplaceable space in the market which reflects on its sales. It also has better interiors and its toned down exteriors appeal to a lot of people. To us, the Silverado on the nose appearance is quite attractive. The powerful diesel engine is another reason why our pick will be the SIlverado.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Diesel Crew Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel Crew Cab

The Silverado and the Sierra are basically the same truck. They share the same platform, mechanics and performance. They are two parts of the same coin. Where they differ is in their nature. While the SIlverado is more of a “get work done” kind of truck, the Sierra has a certain pizazz to it. The Sierra is generally credited with better interiors than the Silverado. Its exteriors are also flashier. However, the sales figures of both trucks clearly reflect which truck the American public side with. It's the Silverado.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

The Silverado 2500 HD offers a very potent package at a very attractive price. The diesel engine is very impressive and is capable of breathtaking power, giving us superb towing capacity. The new interiors may seem a little behind the curve, but the aggressive exteriors really give the SIlverado a character. What the Silverado offers in its price point is the assurance of getting the toughest of tasks done. Chevrolet proudly displays its name all over the truck for the very same reason. Although the competition is fierce, they better look out for the Silverado. It's coming to win them all.
