The Silverado like most other heavy-duty offerings in the market exists majorly for their pulling and carrying capability, mostly for professionals and handymen or just for people needing to make a style statement. The lower capability in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is better suited to people looking for a style statement. The truck stands up to offerings by other manufacturers in the segment like the Ford F-250 Super Duty, the RAM 2500, and the GMC Sierra 2500HD.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Pricing and Features

8.0/10

The Silverado has 4 trims for this heavy-duty truck to account for the amount of luxury or novelty that suits your persona. The higher trims grant better driving assist features and styling accents both in the interior and the exterior of the truck. The Work Truck is suited for professionals looking to cut the bottom line and requiring only the capability over styling and luxury. The other trims selectively add on luxuries, while the final High Country trim features luxurious upholstery, although it does seem a bit off-place.

We Recommend

Chevrolet offers a variety of trims and options on the Silverado 2500HD to suit your preferences. However, for people looking for only the capacity and the pulling power, the lower trim Work Truck makes the most sense. LT is the most family-friendly option. With an added infotainment and spacious interiors, it allows you to get the best of the truck at an economical price. The LTZ trim adds leather seats, while the High Country offers the most luxury on the range, either of which are only recommended if you are willing to pay up a hefty buck.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Buying Advice

Although all trims have been decently spruced up with features, we would strongly recommend the LT Trim as some of the best features available in the top trims are present in this trim. The only compromise is the Absence of the Driver focused equipment that has been thrown in the LTZ and the High Country Trim only.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Engine and Performance

5.5/10

The standard engine on the Silverado 2500HD is the same reliable and perfected 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine. The motor can produce 360 horsepower and 380 foot-pounds of torque on a normal Flex-fuel. But the real attractive part for the engine is most definitely it's pulling capability. Being a naturally aspirated V-8, it does guzzle a lot of fuel, especially if it’s cheap. The drive is pushed to the rear wheels as standard, though a 4WD is available for some offroading character at just about $3,100.

An additional option is a 6.6L V-8 turbo-diesel, which has been updated for 2018 to deliver 910 foot-pounds of colossal torque. The diesel motor can tow up to 18,000 pounds in some configuration, which can uproot your neighbor’s houses much less a tree stump. To lift the rear of the truck, there are leaf springs on the rear axle, not the coil-springs on the RAM heavy-duty trucks, which allow for great payload capability but not much ride comfort.

The RAM 2500 is available at a cheaper price range and still boasts the most modernity amongst its competitors. It even has coil springs at the rear, making it the better choice. The Ford F-250 Superduty is available at a much lower price than that of the competition. The GMC Sierra 2500HD is a bit more expensive than the rest even in its lowest trim. RAM 2500 wins the power race by offering the best in class numbers of 410hp.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Acceleration

While you wouldn't expect most pickups to have great acceleration, most modern trucks are pretty fast at getting off. This is due to the colossal amounts of torque they are tuned to deliver at their rear wheels. But then again, most gearboxes tend to have an affliction for pulling power much more than fast shifts and performance, which takes away from the acceleration.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab accelerate in 7.5 sec

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado has an older 6-speed automatic box, which makes it a hefty bit slower than its somewhat modern segment. The truck reaches 60 mph in just about 7.5 seconds, while it takes 15.9 seconds to reach the quarter-mile mark. Both Chevrolet and its sibling GMC bring on the table the smallest 6.0L V8 engine, whereas RAM brings the biggest engine measuring 6.4L.

The modernized setup of the RAM is what comes out as the winner, the 2500 takes just 7.2 seconds to accelerate from 0-60, while the quarter-mile is achieved at 15.6 seconds. The Ford F-250 is the slowest of the bunch taking 8.5 seconds to just touch the 60 mph mark. The other offspring of General Motors other than Chevrolet, GMC offers the same acceleration figures for its customers.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Handling and steering

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado feels a great deal car-like with its agile handling and response, though the handling does make you aware of its size quite frequently. The throttle response is brilliant, and the truck gives off a feeling of reliability and assurance, though it swings around on fast corners. The steering and handling overall are quite easy to get used to, even as a daily driver.

The durable and simple leaf-spring rear suspension is employed in the truck. The more modernized RAM 2500 uses a coil spring, which is a bit of a miss in the case of the Silverado. The Silverado has a hard ride quality, especially on the rear axle. Though it is especially capable of carrying loads barely lowering the suspension. The truck also barely feels any potholes or pavement thanks to its humongous size and the huge tire sidewalls.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Braking

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is huge and heavy at 6,242 pounds, and to stop a behemoth of a vehicle that size, you need meaty brakes. The brakes are reliable, but they take quite a powerful push on them to get them to perform, which is pointing towards the ruggedness of the truck. The 2018 Silverado comes with big ventilated discs in the front and rear with a rotor size of 13 inches and 13.6 inches respectively. It takes about 124 feet to bring Chevy Silverado to a complete halt.

Comparing the Chevy to other big trucks, Ford F-250 has the largest brakes of 13.8 inches in the front and 13.7 in the rear combine for great stopping power. With a weight of 6,052 pounds, it's also the lightest among all the trucks, in some cases as much as 300 pounds, which works in its favor when it comes to a complete stop at 121 feet from 0-60MPH. The RAM is the heaviest truck in the lot, and as such has the longest stopping distance.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Towing Capacity

The heavy-duty trucks are made for towing or carrying loads. The Silverado 2500 with its 6.0L V-8 is highly capable of pulling loads or even carrying them to suit your needs. The 2WD variant is capable of towing up to 13,000 pounds and carrying 3,410 pounds in its bed. This makes it one of the best and most powerful pickups in the market for 2018.

Both the Ford F-250 and the RAM 2500 are better at towing and carrying loads as compared to the Silverado 2500HD. The GMC Sierra has almost the same towing and payload capacity as its other sibling from Chevy.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Fuel Economy

6.7/10

Heavy-duty trucks are considered to be commercial vehicles, and as such not required to be rated by the EPA in terms of their fuel economy. Similarly, no truck in the segment is rated in this fashion. The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado is rated to have its horsepower output on normal unleaded fuel, though premium fuel will fare even better in the motor. Overall the truck should easily get you at least 500 miles of range on a full tank, which is 36 gallons.

None of the pickups have any reliable mileage rating for their large V-8 fuel-guzzling motors. Though the Ford seems the most well-off considering it has a colossal 48 gallons of capacity. The RAM has a lower fuel capacity, so we expect it to not be used much on longer slogs.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Interior

7.1/10

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado offers great spacious interiors, with enough space for 6 passengers in the crew cab. The WT models have a vinyl upholstery, which is pretty much commercial grade and is great for long term durability. The LT trucks get cloth upholstery, which feels durable. The LTZ and High Country use real leather, which is only available in black in the former, while the latter gets some attractive shades.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab seating layout

The interiors are easy to use and feel quite rugged. The use of hard plastics throughout makes them a bit displeasing. Though the large space both at the front and the rear in the crew cab makes up for it pretty well. The dashboard is well laid out and is highly attractive, with the design mimicking the front of the car. The infotainment screen is also affixed right at the center of the dash.

The legroom both in the front and the back is perfectly adequate for almost any size of passenger. The rear center passenger also gets enough shoulder room in the large cabin. The Ford F-250 Crew Cab gets much more spacious legroom, which would be a must-have for very large passengers. The RAM 2500 Crew Cab has a better and more modernized interior and an overall feeling of comfort even in its lower trims.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Infotainment

The Silverado offers a well-equipped infotainment setup. The Work Truck comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, which includes a rear-view camera, Radio, and Bluetooth Connectivity. The LT trims add an 8.0-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch driver information display. Finally, the last High Country trim offers an upgraded stereo from Bose, wireless cellphone charging, including navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot, and emergency notification.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Exterior

5.5/10

The truck is built to have a presence on the road. It is the perfect complement to a rugged or hardcore personality. The Exterior comes with the classic straight hood of the Silverado, with LED DRLs. The other lights and even the rear lamps are normal incandescent bulbs. The 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is a long track at 239.5 inches. It's bigger than most 7-seater SUVs available in the market. It is 80 inches wide and 74.17 inches in height. With a ground clearance of 8.73 inches, it would cross over many obstacles like they are nothing. The wheelbase is 143.5 inches, which provides ample space inside the big airy cabin.

The 2018 Ford F-250 is the longest and the bulkiest of the lot. The RAM has the highest ground clearance, exceeding both the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado by at least a whole inch. The RAM 1500 is also the heaviest car on the block, which does show up in its fuel economy. Some of the standout exterior features of the truck are:

  • New exterior colors like Cajun Red, Havana, etc.
  • Dual Sunroof
  • Chrome colored running boards

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Safety

8.9/10

Heavy-duty pickups should be tested more thoroughly considering the prevalence of them on American roads. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD has a lower rating as compared to its normal road-going sibling, the Silverado 1500. The truck scores 4/5 stars on the NHTSA report. It has a 3-star rollover rating with a 20.50 rollover risk. The IIHS also rates the truck generally favorable, with only the frontal crash rating a bit on the lacking side. Chevrolet has loaded the 2018 2500HD with several active and passive safety features, which include:

  • StabiliTrak, stability control system with Proactive Roll Avoidance and traction control, includes electronic trailer sway control and hill start assist
  • Daytime Running Lamps with automatic exterior lamp control
  • Dual-stage frontal and side-impact
  • Passenger Sensing System
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Tire Fill Alert

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Competition

7.3/10

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Vs RAM 2500

RAM 1500 has come of age with regular updates coming every year. With around 20 more horses, RAM is superior in power to Silverado. Even the cabin quality on the RAM is a par above the Silverado. Ride quality is much better in RAM as it has air suspension as optional, which makes the ride subtle even over harsh roads. The Silverado doesn't fare well in that department.

RAM 2500

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Vs Ford F250 Superduty

Ford F-250 is the best-selling pick-up truck in America. The Ford has a more imposing presence, and a much more reliable and powerful engine. With regular updates like tweaked EcoBoost engines, 6-speed transmission, intuitive Sync 3 infotainment, an extensive list of options (Phew! there are a lot), it beats Silverado hands down in many departments. Because Chevrolet has had reliability issues, Ford is the better bet among the two.

Ford F-250 Super Duty

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Vs GMC Sierra 2500HD

The Silverado and the Sierra are almost the same cars under the hood. They have similar underpinnings and even similar performance and mileage. The Sierra is marketed by General Motors to be a touch towards the more luxurious side, which makes it a bit more pricey in the higher trims. Overall though even the Sierra lacks true luxury in the cabin and as such is the same as the Silverado.

GMC Sierra 2500HD

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

Chevrolet Silverado is an absolute steal at the price it is available. It rides well but not over big potholes and gravel roads. It has the best towing capabilities and a renowned off-road pedigree. Chevrolet should do some updates to the infotainment and add more power outlets to the vehicle. The powertrain also is a bit lacking and must be bumped up. It hasn't got much change for 2018 but a new 2019 Silverado is coming next year, which might change the game in this segment. Overall the truck is worth considering but cannot be the best offering in the segment.
