The last generation of the Silverado 2500 HD was a good truck. However, it lacked the refinement and the capability the competition offered. This all changes with the 2020 Silverado 2500 HD. With a fully redesigned exterior and interior, and a new, very capable gasoline engine, the Silverado is ready to take on the competition.

Speaking of the competition, competing with the Silverado here are the Ford F-250 Super Duty and the GMC Sierra 2500 HD.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Features

10/10

Pickup trucks have confusing lineups. They are long and complicated things by offering a variety of options. However, things here are simple enough. The Silverado 2500 HD Crew cab is offered in 5 trims. All trims offer the option between RWD and 4WD except the High Country, which comes only in 4WD.

Which trim do we recommend?

While the base trims here offer better value for money, they are grossly under equipped when it comes to features. They do provide utility, but trucks today are bought for every kind of person. If you just need it for work, then the base WT is the truck for you, however, if you’re buying the SIlverado 2500 as a daily, then choosing a trim with better features makes more sense. In such a case, we recommend the LTZ.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Engine and Performance

10/10

A truck as big as the Silverado 2500 needs an equally big engine. The 6.6L V8 under the hood has no problem handling the massive weight of the truck. This gigantic engine makes 410 horsepower and 464 lb ft of torque. A 6 speed transmission is paired with this engine. They both work in tandem quite well, elevating the driving experience of the truck. This overall setup increases the power from what the Silverado made until last year.

The Sierra and the Silverado share the same engine and hence make the same power. The F-250 makes the least amount of power here. However, it does cost the least in the class. The SIlverado is at a sweet point, making the most power in the class but being placed in the middle in terms of cost.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty 2500 Crew Cab 0-60?

The acceleration the Silverado 2500 is capable of is stupendous considering its heft. Weighing upwards of 6800 pounds, this massive truck manages to reach 60 mph from 0 in just 7.2 seconds. The transmission does a good job of putting the engine’s power to the ground. Sudden accelerations are met with a quick drop of gears, thrusting this beast forward.

As said above, the Silverado’s 7.2 seconds time is highly impressive, giving it the title of class best. The Sierra’s time isn't available to us yet, however, since it shares the same engine, transmission and curb weight, one can assume that it will have similar numbers. The Ford F-250 falls behind again, making it dead last in the class.

How does the new Chevrolet Silverado 2500 handle?

One would expect the SIlverado to handle much heavier than it actually does. Driving this truck will surprise most people. The steering is lightweight and makes driving the Silverado very easy. The suspensions also have a part to play in making the ride quality smooth. The stiff front suspension, using the weight of the car, iron outs any hurdles on the road. The rear leaf suspension however is a little unstable. Unladen, it reacts violently to bumps. Body roll is present but is well handled by the suspensions.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab 60-0?

A truck of this weight, capable of such high speeds, needs to have brakes which perform well. Thankfully, the brakes on the SIlverado 2500 are a good fit and perform really well. Both the 14 inch front and rear disk brakes are ventilated. While brakes perform admirably, there is still an issue. To us, the dead travel on the pedal seemed a little extensive. A quarter of the travel did not contribute to any braking. Paired with the fact that the pedals are not adjustable, some of the shorter drivers might be uncomfortable.

The stopping distance is not known for each of the cars in the class. However, if the performance of the Regular Cab is any indication, the Silverado is assumed to come up ahead. Despite having less weight and similar size of brakes, the Ford F-250 fell behind in braking performance before.

How much can the 2020 Chevy SIlverado 2500 haul?

The Silverado 2500 HD’s towing capacity is very impressive. The new 2020 Silverado 2500 HD is able to easily tow up to 14500 pounds while its payload capacity is 3534 pounds. When tested, the Silverado was able to tow upwards of 12000 pounds uhill with ease. Even while descending, the Silverado showed no signs of duress, instilling confidence in the drive.

Although the Silverado boasts an impressive towing capacity, the Ford F-250 has it beat. With a towing capacity of 15000 pounds, it becomes the class leader in this segment. The Sierra shares the same number as the Silverado, as usual.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 2020 Silverado’s official fuel economy ratings are not known yet. Since the engine is new this year, no assumptions can be made about its performance in this area. However, we do know that the Silverado has a 36 gallon fuel tank.

Not only the Silverado, the F-250 and the Sierra both are yet to receive official fuel economy ratings. Due to a smaller fuel tank, one can think the F-250 might have poorer range. However, if its younger sibling, the F-250 is any example, there is a possibility the F-250 might have better or at least competitive range thanks to better fuel economy.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Interior

9.0/10

The 2020 Silverado 2500 now has all new interiors. This follows the same design cues as the redesign the Silverado1500 got last year. The interior quality is quite nice, however they do seem dated for a “Redesign” in 2020. The layout is generic as it is similar across the class.

Starting from the driving position, it is a little elevated. Seating position of the driver is high, which helps in driving as it gives a clear view of the road. Looking down the high hood is problematic, which becomes more cumbersome while trying to park in small places. The view out the back is clear, but assistance from a parking a backup camera and parking sensors are needed while parking. The A pillars do obstruct the view a little bit, especially in turns, but isn't that big a problem.

The cabin is spacious and makes good use of the space provided. Even the second row has a decent amount of space. The front bucket seats are perforated leather seats, which are both heated and ventilated. The rear seats are also heated. It has an option which offers underseat storage compartment. The seats are on the stiffer sidem but are comfortable enough for a long trip.

The Silverado 2500 HD has a standard looking gauge cluster, but does offer a 4.2 inch diagonal color Driver Information Center screen which includes driver personalization options and displays error messages and vehicle information.

The cabin remains fairly quiet, with the only disturbance being wind noise. Tire noise is at a minimum. The sound of the V8 engine is not noticeable while idling, however, rev the engine high enough and the rumble of this enormous engine engulfs the cabin.

The cabin space in each of the vehicles is adequate. However, the SIlverado and the Sierra are ahead in the front row cabin space. While the Ford F-250 falls behind in front row spacing, it takes the lead in the second row. That is only because the Silverado and Sierra have less space in the back as compared to the front. F-250’s lead in the second wont make any real world difference, but a win is a win.

What Infotainment features does the Silverado 2500 have?

The Silverado comes equipped with Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system, which might not have a flashy name, but is actually a really good system. Its intuitive to use and not laggy at all. The 8 inch touchscreen quickly responds to touch inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard, and along with a bluetooth which can connect up to 2 devices at the same time, connectivity options are plentiful. The Silverado Crew Cab offers 7 Bose speakers and a subwoofer.

How much cargo space does the Silverado 2500 offer?

Cargo Beds are one of the most important attractions in any pickup truck. Chevrolet has made sure the bed on the Silverado 2500 is second to none. They have gone so far as to claim that the Silverado’s cargo bed has the most volume among its competitors. While this claim will be tested later, the bed itself is quite remarkable. Accessing the cargo bay is made easy thanks to a step integrated into the bumper of the Silverado 2500. There are integrated grab handles into the body as well to make the climb into the bed easy. The first thing that catches your eye is that the cargo bed is quite wide. Each corner of the bed has 3 cargo hooks, making 12 in total. Each hook is rated for 500 pounds, which is impressive.

Chevrolet’s claim of having the most volume among its competitors is somewhat true. While it does have more volume than the Ford F-250, it is the same as the Sierra. The Sierra and the Silverado are basically the same car, so we think this can be given a pass.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Exterior

6.0/10

The new 2020 Silverado has external upgrades. It now looks more aggressive and rugged. The boxy look is reminiscent of a pickup truck is still here, the Silverado has just taken that to another level. The front grille and headlights have been split in the middle by a beam which wears Chevrolet’s name proudly. The hood scoop here isn’t just for show, but effectively cools the giant engine down. From the side, the SIlverado looks equally massive. It makes the 20 inch wheels look small. Side steps are integrated into the body. At the back, once again, the Chevrolet name is prominently displayed. The rear bumper integrates a step to make climbing into the cargo area much simpler.

Overall, the design changes make this Silverado one of the meanest looking trucks on the road.

The F-250 has the least ground clearance in the class. The F-250 also doesn't benefit from being the lightest in the class as the much heavier Silverado and Sierra have better acceleration. The external looks of the Silverado are among the most aggressive in the class. The F-250 has a much more toned down look. The Sierra has a little too much flash for our taste.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Safety

8.0/10

Car manufacturers have tried to include as many safety features as they can afford to put into their car for the price point the car is in. The Silverado is equipped with many such features. Features like back up cameras and reverse sensors are common. The Silverado also offers features that are unique to it. Hitch Guidance allows users to use the the back up camera to help align the trailer better while reversing. It can also help the driver check on it while driving. Some other features are:

  • StabiliTrak - Electronic stability control
  • Teen Driver mode
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Traction control
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Engine immobilizer

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Competition

9.0/10

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab vs 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab

In direct comparison, the new Silverado is turning up to be the better truck when compared to the Ford F-250. It makes more power, has better acceleration, more cargo volume, more cabin space and presumably more braking power as well. However, there is a reason that the F-250 always outsells the Silverado 2500 HD. Its better towing capacity and possibly better fuel economy makes it an attractive option. Couple it with the fact that the F-250 is slightly cheaper makes it a hard bargain. The Silverado is a good package, but it needs to make some waves to drive attention from the Ford F Series of trucks.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab

The Sierra and the Silverado are two sides of the same coin. They are based on the same platform, have the same engine and performance numbers and are almost similar in many other fields. What differentiates the two is the nature the cars have. While the Silverado is a “Get Work Done” kind of truck, the Sierra is more polished and is credited with being more flashy. The Sierra is a good truck, but in our opinion concentrates on the wrong things, which reflects in its low sales.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

The Silverado 2500 HD is a very potent truck. It promises great power in a very attractive package. The new engine here makes the Silverado fast and gives it great towing capacity. The interiors after the new refresh may seem a little behind the curve, but the exteriors make it one of the meanest trucks on the road. What the Silverado offers in its price point is the assurance to get the work done. Chevrolet proudly displays its name all over the truck for the very same reason. Although the competition is fierce, they better look out for the Silverado. It's coming to win them all.
