Expert Review

Overall Rating

The Silverado offers 7 trims on offer, each with a choice of drivetrain and bed length. Along with that, you can choose among 4 engines. The Silverado lineup, like any pickup lineup, can be confusing, but we have attempted to make it simple for you.

Every great vehicle has rivals. Competitors which keep a car always thrusting forward to become better. The Silverado too has such rivals. The GMC Sierra is the first vehicle which comes to mind. The Sierra is quite a similar car to the Silverado as it's based on the same platform. When talking about pickups, how can one forget about the Ford F-150. This tough competitor has been outselling the Silverado for years. Lets see how the current generation fairs

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Features

9.0/10

The trim lineup of pickup trucks have always been complicated. This year is no different. The 2020 Silverado 1500 Double Cab is offered in 7 trims. Almost all the trims are offered with a choice between RWD or 4WD. Another decision is the choice of engine. The Silverado is offered in 4 engines accompanied by 3 transmissions.

The features are spread predictably. One gets more attractive features the higher they go up the trim lineup.

Which trim do we recommend?

Although the lower trims provide value for money, the Silverado is best when equipped with some of its higher trims level features. The RST is a good inbetween. It has a lot of features as standard, and others can be equipped as options if the customer wants. It offers a good selection of utility, comfort and safety features.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab is offered in many trims and not all trims offer the same engine as standard. Across the trim line, the Silverado can be equipped with 4 different engines, out of which 3 are standard in at least one trim. The 4.3L V6 engine is what comes standard on the Work Truck, Custom and Custom Trail Boss. The 2.7L turbocharged Inline 4 might seem like a small engine (mostly cuz it is), but is capable enough to make more power than the base V6. You can find this standard on the LT and RST trims. The last engine, which comes standard at least, is the 5.3L V8. This is a big engine making big power and is standard on the LZT and the LT Trail Boss.

Taking of the base V6, this 4.3L engine is naturally aspirated and makes 285 horsepower and 305 lb ft of torque.

In terms of power, the Silverado trails the competition. However, the Ford F-150 makes more power than the both the Silverado and the Sierra only by a small margin. In terms of torque, the Silverado-Sierra gang pulls ahead.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab “0-60”?

The Silverado is a heavy vehicle with a somewhat underpowered base engine. Despite that, it is able to manage a steady acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. As said above, the Silverado is offered in multiple engines and transmissions. The performance will increase or decrease based on the engine which is equipped. Since this is the least powered base engine, the performance of the others will only increase.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab 0-60 in just 7 sec

The acceleration itself is constant. The transmission is quick to shift between gears. One will not feel that the Silverado is sluggish at any moment.

The Silverado-Sierra gang shines here. Both have a 0-60 acceleration of 7 seconds, which is the class best. The 7.6 seconds Ford F-150 could not out-perform them despite having more power.

How does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab handle?

Despite its size, the Silverado feels much lighter than it actually is. Obviously, it won't feel as light as a conventional daily driver, but driving it isn't taxing at its weight. The steering is light and very accurate. However, it fails to provide proper feedback to the driver. In tight corners, the driver won't be able to place the wheels very well. In “Sports” mode, the steering does stiffen up a bunch, but still fails to provide proper feedback to the driver.

In tight corners, the driver won't be able to place the wheels very well.

Driving the Silverado is a very rewarding experience though. It's planted in corners and has little vibrations. The rear suspensions are on leaf springs which have the tendency to become violent when they encounter a bump while turning. Other than that, the ride is smooth.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab “0-60”?

Such a massive vehicle capable of moving at great speeds needs a good set of brakes. The Silverado has a great set of brakes. Both the front and rear have 13+ inch disk brakes which are ventilated. The brake performance is on point. A panic stop from 60 mph took 126 feet to bring this truck to a complete halt. However, nothing can be perfect. The amount of dead travel on the brake pedal is a little too much for comfort. This can be especially problematic for shorter passengers, Even more so as the pedals are not adjustable. Other than that, the brakes are fine. The modulation is on point and they react predictably.

Class leading numbers by the Silverado here. The Sierra, which shares the same mechanics and weight is also left behind, with a stop distance of 128 feet. However, these numbers are within the margin of error. The Ford F-150 disappoints once again, with a stop distance of 131 feet.

How much can the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab tow?

For the power and the price, the Silverado doesn't have that impressive of a towing capacity. The maximum it can tow is 9700 pounds.

Finally, the Ford F-150 shines. Low acceleration or braking can be excused with a towing performance which is class leading, at 11,800 pounds. The Silverado-Sierra are at the back step on this, with a towing capacity of 9700 pounds.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The 4.3L V6 the Silverado offers on its base models isn't particularly fuel efficient. In the city it provides 16 miles to the gallon which bumps up to 21 on the highway. This engine does have Active Fuel Management, which cuts power to some cylinders when they are not needed, to increase fuel economy. The increase in fuel economy isn't known though.

The Silverado has other engines on offer which make better fuel economy i.e.; the 2.7L Turbocharged Inline 4. With a fuel tank of 24 gallons, it doesn't have an impressive range.

The Ford F-150 is in the lead here. Its smaller 3.3L engine giving better fuel economy is hardly a surprise. That paired with a bigger 26 gallon fuel tank makes the F-150 have far better range too.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Interior

7.0/10

For a pickup, the interiors of the Silverado are decent. It has skipped in a few places which degrades the whole experience but overall, it can be lived with. The look inside is a bit generic, as most of the competition, especially the GMC Sierra has the same layout.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Cockpit Area

The driving position is a bit elevated. The driver sits high in their seat, which provides a decent view of the road and makes the maneuvering easy. Looking down the hood is a little challenging, which makes navigating tight corners cumbersome. The A pillars are big but don't get in the view of the road much. The view out back is quite clear, however in order to reverse, the driver will desperately need to rely on the back up camera and parking assists.

At decent speeds, cabin noise is more of wind noise than tire noise. The engine is insulated enough that its noise doesn't seep into the cabin. However, on higher revs, no amount of insulation can keep the engine’s noise out. The bigger V8 engines make more noise but listening to them feels more taxing than exhilarating as they sound very good.

What infotainment features does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab offer?

The infotainment on the Silverado is the Chevrolet Infotainment 3, which provides a very fast and intuitive experience. The 8 inch touchscreen is fast and responds to touch inputs well. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard. The bluetooth is capable of connecting to two devices at a time. Lets just say smartphone integration is quite facilitated here. Voice control passthrough lets you control your phone via voice commands. It has 6 speakers which provide a good coverago of sound.

How much cargo space does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab have to offer?

The cargo space is any pickup’s main attraction. The cargo space on the Silverado upholds the expectation. The bed is huge. It's wider than the competition’s and with a lightweight liftgate and easy access provides a lot of utility and simplicity. The bed is decently illuminated to facilitate usage.

People have to expect a certain look when it comes to a pickup. The giant and boxy design is the signature look for a pickup truck, at least until some particular funky manufacturers out there don't set the standards as triangles .. and cyber-y.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Third Quarter View

The front of the Silverado seems massive. Well, mostly because it is. The giant split grille upfront is one of its most eye catching features. The split beam also splits the headlights into two sections and has “Chevrolet” written across it, adding to the charisma. A giant hood, painted recovery hooks and halogen headlights, all add to the fierce look of the Silverado. The front integrates well with the rest of the body.

The size of the truck manages to make it otherwise prominently sized wheels feel small. All terrain tires are best suited for a vehicle like this but Chevrolet offers the Silverado with only all season tires, unless you’re opting for any of the Trail Boss Trims.

The Silverado and the Sierra are the heaviest in the class. The Ford F-150 is substantially lighter, which might help its handling, but did not help its acceleration as we saw. The F-150 has a higher ground clearance, which will help it more off-roads. However, without an increase in height, this will translate to less headroom inside the cabic, as we saw before. The Silverado-Sierra gang shares the numbers here, as they are mostly the same vehicle.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Safety

8.0/10

Chevrolet has included a plethora of features to make the Silverado safe. Navigating such a huge truck will be very difficult without parking sensors. In tight spaces, these sensors will help protect your paint job. Other sensors watch the road, like the lane keep assist, make sure the occupants don’t meet with an accident. Braking assists also serves the same purpose. Other features are:

  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Stability Control
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Traction Control
  • 4 Wheel ABS

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab vs 2020 Ford F-150 SuperCab

Ford has their priorities straight. The F-150 is a pickup truck. So, they gave it decent comfort, good styling, great ground clearance, class leading fuel economy and towing capacity. It does lack in other categories, such as speed and acceleration, cabin room, however, the essence of a pickup truck is well protected here. It makes a very tough competitor for the Silverado.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra Double Cab

The GMC Sierra is a slightly lavish version of the Silverado. It gives more features and comfort by costing slightly more. The Silverado and the Sierra are basically the same vehicle. They are based on the same platform, share the same mechanics and offer the same comfort levels. The only reason one would choose the Sierra over the Silverado is to enjoy the premium the price buys them.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab Final Verdict

8.2/10

The Silverado has carried the American Spirit for decades. It has been a reliable companion for many throughout the years. Despite its competitors performing better than it in some key areas, the Silverado has been one of the most prefered vehicles in the class. With the new generation, Chevrolet has truly reenergized the Silverado. It is turning more heads than ever and a very potent vehicle.

Pickup truck lacks pickup

For a truck, it’s very easy to drive and handle. On the flip side, it lacks speed.

"Silverado never disappoints"

Traded my previous Silverado and bought a new one. There were some problems with the powertrain like dally transmission and engine noise and I had high hopes of an improved and refined engine. Chevrolet didn’t disappoint in me in this regard. The engine is great and so is the transmission. It has been a great experience so far driving the new Silverado.

"Not sure"

Nothing special, quite a boring experience if you ask me. I choose 4.3L engine and expected power, well I was wrong in my expectations. My friend has a 2.7L and that one is more fun this piece of metal I’d say.
