The Silverado is offered with 5 engine options in different configurations, however, the diesel engine caught our eye. It provides superb fuel economy and range while providing an exciting driving experience.

The competitors for the Silverado diesel are the Ford F-150 diesel and the GMC Sierra diesel. These two have made good competitors of the gasoline variants of the Silverado. Let’s see how they fare here.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Features

9.0/10

The Silverado Crew Cab comes in 8 trims, however, not all trims are available with the diesel engine. This engine comes in only 4 trims, the LT, the RST, the LTZ, and the High country. All four of these trims are offered with the choice of RWD and 4WD. The trim level in itself is pretty predictable.

Which trim do we recommend?

While the higher trims do have all the luxury and safety features as standard, but the top of the line trim does demand a slight premium. The LTZ is a good option to consider. The cost isn't much higher than the base when compared to the top trim. It offers a lot of luxury features as standard and can be equipped with more one desires.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Engine and Performance

9.0/10

This version of the Crew Cab comes equipped with a turbocharged diesel inline 6 engine. While this engine does make slightly less power compared to its gas counterpart, it makes monstrous amounts of torque. This is a common characteristic of diesel engines. This diesel engine makes 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque that makes it a truly tractable motor.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Has a 3.0 L Turbocharged Inline 6 Engine

All this power reaches the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. The slick-shifting 10-speed transmission manages to hold its gears which comes in handy in off-road situations and is also responsible for increased fuel efficiency. The 10-speed, however, does struggle to get a move on in slow-moving traffic as it is hesitant to shift down when you want that power on demand, that is most likely because this engine and transmission is geared more towards fuel efficiency as opposed to providing outright performance.

While in other configurations, the F-150 might have bested the Silverado and the Sierra, but when it comes to the diesel engines, the Silverado and Sierra are victorious. The make more horsepower and torque, in which, the Silverado is cheaper than the rest.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel “0-60”?

The 10-speed automatic that is tasked with handling the transmission duties is well suited to the Silverado as shifts seamlessly across gears and also manages to hold gears on demand which makes it a suitable companion for those tricky and sticky situations. The Torquey diesel engine and 10-speed transmission as an effective duo is able to thrust this heft truck from zero to 60 mph in just 7 seconds. This is an impressive number for a vehicle as heavy as this the 1500.

The Silverado and the Sierra pull ahead of the Ford F-150 here, quite literally. They are a tad bit faster than the Ford. Due to the decrease in weight, the F-150 is able to bridge the gap created by comparatively less power, but it's not quite enough.

How does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab handle?

The heft of the Silverado is not felt once you hit the road and get going. The Silverado handles like a much lighter vehicle than it is. While the handling is on point, the steering is a little iffy. The steering can be termed as too light. Light steering on a heavy car is always welcome, however, too light eliminates all feedback to the driver. This is especially bothersome in tight corners, where the disconnect between the wheels and the steering is made evident. The “Sports” mode stiffens the steering a bit but the feedback still remains a problem.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab  Rear View

Driving the Silverado is not taxing as it seems. In corners, it stays sturdy and planted. However, the rear leaf springs react violently to mid-turn bumps. Other than that, It has minimal vibrations while driving and the throttle response is amazing with class-leading refinement levels.

How is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab's “60-0”?

When a car is both heavy and capable of great amounts of speeds, it needs good brakes. Fortunately, the Silverado delivers on this front. The 13+ inch ventilated disk brakes on all four corners that help this behemoth come to a standstill from 60 mph in just 133 feet. This number is impressive when we take the weight into account which is class-leading and similar to its GMC counterpart. There is an issue though. The lack of feedback and the extremely short travel on the pedal is quiet dishearting. Shorter drivers are bound to suffer more due to lack of adjusting pedals.

While the Silverado and the Sierra have the same setup and weight, the latter still performs much better than the former. The Ford F-150 also stops quicker than the Silverado. Although, the difference in performance between the two is well within the margin of error. It is all down to the better and more effective braking setup used in the ford that makes all the difference, a crucial aspect when the vehicles in question are behemoths like these that are tasked with carrying heavy loads.

How is the towing prowess of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab?

The diesel engine is not optimal for towing purposes. Due to this engine, the Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab is rated for 9300 pounds of towing capacity as opposed to 9700 pounds on the standard gas variant of the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab.

The abundance of torque provided by the diesel engines is what makes them the engine of choice for those looking to haul loads over long distances. However, even after that, Ford comes up on top. With a towing capacity of 12300, the Ford F-150 offers a towing capacity that is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition despite its notable power disadvantage, which goes to show why the F-150 is the undisputed king of this segment.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Diesel engines have their ups and downs. Fuel economy is one of its pros. Diesel engines are known for offering up more miles per gallon than a comparable gasoline engine. The 3.0L diesel engine used here gets 23 miles to the gallon in the city and a whopping 33 miles to the gallon on the highway.

When it comes to fuel economy, the Duramax 3.0L Inline 6 diesel in the Silverado and Sierra is more efficient than the diesel engine in the F-150. The F-150 isn't drastically behind, but enough to make a real-world difference. However, due to its bigger fuel tank, it is able to catch up in range. But there's no denying that chevy has the newer and more superior 10-speed auto unit especially in terms of generating better fuel economy figures despite the Silverado's higher power and torque figures.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Interior

7.0/10

The interiors of the Silverado are quite decent. The lower trims do feel a little underequipped, however, the diesel engine isn't offered in the lower trims. The interiors on the base diesel trim feel well polished. However, the generic design feels uninspiring, as the look in the cabin is the same across the competition.

Starting from the top, the driving position is quite elevated. The driver sits in his seat, which enables them to have a clear view of the street. Looking down at the high hood is difficult, which will prove to be a problem on the open road but can be problematic in tight spaces. The view through the rearview mirror is also clear, which might be fine on the road, but one will need to use the reverse camera and parking sensors to reverse or park.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab Front Seats

The inside of the cabin cab becomes fairly noisy. As one picks-up speed, a fair bit of wind, tire and engine noise creeps into the cabin. The engine seems quiet in low revs and at idle but made itself known at the higher end of the rev-range.
The cabin space here is among the best in the class. The seats are slightly stiff but are comfortable enough for long trips.

The Silverado’s cabin space is impressive but not consistent. While it leads the class for front row cabin space, it falls behind in the second-row specs. The GMC shares the same fate, dominating the F-150 on front row space but falling behind the second-row cabin space.

What infotainment features does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab offer?

The Silverado 1500 diesel crew cab boasts the Chevrolet Infotainment 3, a quick and intuitive system that is simple to use and has a really polished UI. The 8-inch touchscreen housed in the middle of the dashboard pairs well with it. It's responsive and quick to the touch. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard. Also, with Bluetooth which lets one connect up to two devices at a time, it has a versatile array of connectivity options. The 6 speakers in the cabin make crisp and clear sounds and are enough to fill the cabin.

How much cargo space does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab have to offer?

The cargo space is the main attraction of any pickup truck, and is also true here. The cargo bed here is similar to the regular crew cab. The bed is easy to get into, has a lot of space and can hold a lot of cargo. 71.7 cubic feet of space is a lot. This is the size of the standard bed on offer.

When it comes to cargo space, everyone's a winner here! A very lame way to say that the cargo bed of all the competitors have similar cargo volume. But as far as quality and convenience goes the Silverado has a slight edge over the F-150 when it comes to loading and unloading courtesy its slightly lower ground clearance which especially comes in handy when dealing with heavy loads however this edge is neutralized as the F-150 gets back in the game with superior quality bed-lining and easier side step and handle setup.

A boxy and rugged look is what characterizes a pickup truck. While new reveals like the Cybertruck are attempting to change that perception, until that happens, cars like the Silverado will continue to bank on the same appeal. The massive grille in the front, split in the middle with a split bar, which proudly displays “Chevrolet”. It also splits the headlights in half and gives the Silverado its signature look. The giant hood integrates well with the rest of the body. From the side, the Silverado looks fierce. No matter the wheel size, they appear small on the Silverado. Chevrolet offers the Silverado with all-season tires, however, it needs all-terrain tires to work to its full potential.

The Silverado is among the heaviest of the bunch. The F-150 is the lightest. However, as we saw before, being the lightest doesn't help its performance much. Just like its other variants, here too the F-150 suffers from the same issue. Class-leading ground clearance at the same height hinders the headroom in the cabin.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab vs 2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Diesel

The diesel engine in the F-150 is powerful, but not as much as the Silverado’s. The Silverado is quicker than the F-150 despite being heavier. However, there is still a reason the F-150 has such high sale numbers. It has amazing towing capacity and its cargo bed is at par with the Silverado, despite Chevrolet claiming it provides more cargo bed space than its competitors. Although, the Silverado still makes an impression thanks to its class leading cabin space, fuel economy and also its styling. The choice between the two depends on the preferential avenues of a buyer.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Crew Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Diesel Crew Cab Diesel

The Sierra and the SIlverado are very similar to one another. They are based on the same platform, share the same mechanics and have almost identical performance numbers. These sister cars are very closely packaged. However, the Sierra generally manages to be looked at as the fancier of the two. The interiors of the Sierra seemed a bit better to us. However, if the sales numbers are any indication, the Silverado is what the public prefer.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.2/10

The Silverado has been around for decades. In all this time, it has made a reliable companion to thousands of owners, overcoming countless challenges and still moving forward. A true representation of the American Spirit. The 2020 Silverado embodies the same values and makes for an amazingly potent car. The competition better pay close attention to their rearview mirrors. If they’re not vigilant, the Silverado will close the gap and surpass them soon.

To be honest, 58K felt like too much at first and now I think that feeling is fading away with each day of driving.

"Very luxurious and very expensive"

I call it “house on wheels”. It is that comfortable and safe. No matter how long I drive it for I never feel tired that alone proves how comfortable it is.

"Silverado 1500 towing capacity"

The 3.0L Turbo diesel I believe is the best trim of the 1500 because of it's towing capability and the mileage it puts out at the end of the day. Despite having 2wd, I never felt the need of any additional power or 4wd for that matter. Maybe not everyone will agree to this but it works pretty perfect for me.
