Overall Rating

Cars like the Silverado are the embodiment of the American Spirit. They are tough, versatile and are ready for any challenge. Well, they’re built to last.

The value that the Silverado offers, others have been trying to reach but only a few can come close. The closest to that is the Ford F-150 SuperCrew. It is just as close in providing value and usability to their owners, if not more. People would assume that the GMC Sierra 1500 would be considered the closest as, being a sister car, it is almost the same vehicle. Finally, we see the Ram 1500 Crew competing. The name might not be as flashy as the others, but don't take the same perspective of the car itself. It just might surprise you.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Features

9.0/10

The Silverado trim game is very confusing. It has 8 trims ranging from $34,600 to $56,500. Almost every trim has 4 variations. The Custom Trail Boss and the LT Trim Boss only have 2 variations each. This brings the total upto 30. The variations include the choice between RWD or 4WD, and bed length. The short bed is 5.6 feet in length. However for an increase of $300 on the sticker price, one can convert to the 6.6 feet standard bed.

To help with the clutter, the following trim will offer some help. The amount of features increase as we go up the trim ladder. Not all trims share the same engine. The Work Truck, Custom and the Custom Trail Boss have the 4.3L V6 engine in them. A version of the custom is also offered with 5.3L V8. The LT and RST trims are offered with the 2.7 turbocharged Inline 4. Finally, the 5.3L V8, which can be found on the LTZ and High Country Trims. It is also the engine in the LT Trail Boss.

There is another fourth engine on offer. Available as an option on the High Country, LZT, LT Trail Boss, Custom Trail Boss and the RST is a 6.2L Hemi V8. This engine does come as standard on any of the trims.

Which trim do we recommend?

Although the lower priced trims are much more cost effective, offering a good price to feature ratio, we here would recommend the LTZ. It is one of the only trims in this lineup to offer the 6.2L hemi V8, along with the full suite of safety features which Chevrolet offers with the Silverado. The choice of Rwd or 4WD falls on the buyer.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The vast amount of engines on offer with the Silverado makes the choice a little confusing when configuring your own truck. Also, not all engines are available with all the trims. Let's start with the base trims, the Work Truck. It is offered with a 4.6L V6 which produces 285 horsepower and 305 lb ft of torque. Knowing that a smaller engine is on offer, one would assume that it would come in the base trim. However, the 2.7L turbo inline 4 is available on higher trims, as it makes more power.

The Silverado also comes with the choice between 3 transmissions, a 6 speed, an 8 speed and a 10 speed, all automatic. Not every transmission matches with every engine though. The 6 speed is only for the 4.3L V6 and the 5.3L V8. The 8 speed automatic is paired with both the 2.7L turbo Inline 4 and the 5.3L V8. Finally, the 10 speed automatic transmission is exclusively for the 6.2L Hemi V8.

It goes without saying that the power and performance metrics will change based on the combination of engine and transmission.

The Sierra and the Silverado have the exact same performance numbers. Both make 285 horsepower and 305 lb ft of torque. While the ford makes slightly more power, it manages less torque than the Silverado-Sierra gang. Power levels are similar across the competing class, except for the RAM 1500, which makes roughly 9% more power than the class, making it the class leader. However, it just is the leader in horsepower. It holds the exact opposite position when it comes to torque. It has the lowest torque of the class with the Silverado-Sierra gang having the most.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab “0-60”?

Knowing that the Silverado has a variety of engines and transmission, the performance numbers are going to vary. Not only based on the power the engine provides and the torque the transmission puts down, it also depends on the weight which increases or decreases based on the combination.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 0-60 MPH in just 6.4 sec

The numbers displayed here are based on the 4.3L V6 which is coupled with the 6 Speed Automatic transmission. The Silverado manages a time of 6.4 seconds in its acceleration to 60 mph from zero. Numbers like there are impressive for a truck this size.

Trucks with more power fall behind here. The Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500, both had more power than the Silverado, but fell behind in terms of quickness. The 6.6 seconds time falls behind the 6.4 seconds of the Silverado, even if it is by a matter of milliseconds. The quickest here, however, is the GMC Sierra with a time of 6.2 seconds.

How does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab handle?

Being a big truck, the Silverado is expected to feel heavy. Although it definitely feels heavier than any conventional daily driver, it feels lighter to handle than one would expect. The problem here is the feedback provided to the driver, as there isn’t any. In the “Normal” driving mode, the steering feels a little too light for the heft of the car, giving no sense of the road to the driver at all. The “Sports” setting makes the steering a little firmer but it fails to provide any feedback still.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Front View

The Silverado is a breeze to drive though. It remains planted when cornered at fast speeds, however, since the rear of the car is supported by leaf springs, it reacts violently to mid turn bumps.
Other than this, the ride quality is smooth and fluent with very little vibrations. The throttle is accurately responsive.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab “60-0”?

All that heft going fast needs decent stopping power or there is a high scope of catastrophe. Luckily, the Silverado delivers. The brakes on the Silverado are big and strong enough to bring this big truck, rolling at 60 mph, to a full halt in just 133 feet. The brake modulation is linear which makes the brakes very predictable. The pedal is light enough so as to not be a problem in everyday start-and-stop traffic. The pedal travel is a little excessive. For the shorter drivers out there, it can seem like an issue.

Although the braking performance of the Silverado is highly praised, it's not winning any medals. The one that takes a prize here is the GMC Sierra. With a 60-0 mpg panic stopping distance of 128 feet, the GMC is the podium holder in braking performance for the class. The Silverado in fact comes last, but is not far behind the Ford F-150 and the RAM 1500, with a stopping distance of 131 feet and 132 feet respectively.

How is the towing prowess of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab?

The Silverado is able to tow more than double its own body weight. With a towing capacity of 9700 pounds, the Silverado is more than ready to handle the tough tasks it will encounter on a daily basis.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab can tow up to 9700 lbs.

The Silverado’s towing capacity might seem good in person, but compared to its competitors, it falls behind. The Ford F-150 takes the lead here, with a towing capacity of 12700 pounds. To put it in perspective, it can tow whatever the Silverado is towing plus the Silverado itself. The Ram 1500 disappoints a lot here, with the lowest numbers of the class. Silverado’s sister car, the Sierra, beats its numbers by a 100 pounds.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Something like fuel economy highly depends on the engine and transmission one has. Weight also factors in. Since neither the engine and transmission, nor the weight is fixed in this lineup of vehicles, the fuel economy numbers here are based on the base configuration. The 4.3L V6, with the 6 speed automatic transmission, manages 16 mpg in the city which bumps up to 17 mpg on the highway. This base engine does have Active Fuel Management, a system which turns off a couple of cylinders when it feels that the car isn't under strenuous use. This is in place to improve fuel economy.

In their base configuration, the Silverado doesn't come close to the class leaders for fuel economy, especially in range. The leaders here are the Ford F-150 and the RAM 1500. The Silverado-Sierra gang came last. Not only in fuel economy, but also in range. Poor fuel economy with a small tank is a bad recipe. The Ram 1500 manages drives more in the city than what the Silverado-Sierra twins handle on the highway.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Interior

7.0/10

Being a pickup truck, the interior space is quite decent. The Silverado provides class leading cabin room, and the space itself is very enjoyable as the internals are made beautifully. The driver sits a little high in the cabin. This makes the view unobstructed. However, it can get a little troublesome in tight corners due to the placement and height of the hood. The view outback is clean and provides a good view, however, this being a huge pickup truck, reversing is nerve racking. To counter that, a good rear view camera is in place which is further supported by the blind spot monitoring system.
Noise in the cabin is more wind noise than tire noise. The engine is well insulated in normal driving, however, punch the engine up and the cabin is encapsulated with the engine noise. The V8 in particular doesn't sound all that enticing as other we have heard.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Front Seats

The seats are comfortable enough for long trips, despite them being a little stiff. We do hope that the rear seats were a little softer though.

The twins shine here. The Silverado and the Sierra both have class leading cabin space. While the F-150 SuperCrew does have marginally more second row seating space, we strongly believe that the fraction of an inch more seating space it has will go unnoticed in real life usage. Also, the Silverado-Sierra gang has noticeably more front seating space, making them more deserving of the lead here.

What infotainment features does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab offer?

Armed with the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system, the Silverado provides a very clean and interactive experience. The 8 inch touchscreen is very responsive. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, and with a bluetooth capable enough to connect upto two devices at a time, smartphone connectivity has never been so versatile. One can easily control their phone through voice control passthrough. There are a total of 6 speakers, which have loud and clear, providing good lows and sharp highs.

How much cargo space does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab have to offer?

The cargo space of any pickup is its main attraction. The cargo bed here is huge. Chevrolet claims it offers up to 20% more bed space than its competitors. It seems wider than any other in the class. The bed is easy to access, and the texture on the bed of the floor prevents slipping. Illumination is not a problem.

When Chevrolet claimed that their cargo beds are 20% bigger than their competition, it must be written somewhere in the fine print that it's only 20% bigger than “some” of their competitors. The Silverado, the F-150 and the Sierra have identical cargo space. The only vehicle the Silverado trumps is the RAM 1500.

Rugged looks are expected from a pickup truck. The giant and boxy look is reminiscent of a truck. After all .. not all of us can be triangulary .. (cough cybertruck cough). Let's start with the front. The massive hood, giant front split grille, split headlights, painted recovery hooks and across the split beam, in big and letter, is written “Chevrolet”. From the front, the Silverado looks fierce. The bulky hood integrates well with the overall design of the truck. The size of the truck manages to make its 20 inch wheel small. Tires on those wheels are all season tires. However, we recommend to get the best out of the potential of the truck, slap on some all terrain tires. While its smaller trim, the regular cab didn't have a trunk lid, the Crew cab has a trunk lid on offer.

The Silverado-Sierra share the same numbers here too, 4702 pounds. The fall in the middle of the class, with the heaviest being the Ram 1500, at 4971 pounds, and the F-150 is the lightest, at 4529 pounds. Due to more ground clearance under the same height as the class, the Ford F-150 has compromised headroom in the cabin, as we saw before.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Safety

8.0/10

The Silverado has many safety features. Although these safety features are common in this class and price point, features like these can be life saving in case of an emergency. It comes standard with 6 airbags occupant sensing deactivation. The trailer monitoring system lets you actively check on your trailer while driving thanks to its support for up to 15 cameras. Along with these, the Silverado offers many other features, like:

  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Stability Control
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Traction Control
  • 4 Wheel ABS
  • Emergency Braking Assist

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Competition

7.5/10

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab vs 2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew

For less power, one gets a smaller engine in the F-150. A smaller engine doesn't mean it's weaker. From the smaller engine, the F-150 manages more power, but still ends up being slower than the Silverado. Other than that, the F-150 gives the Silverado a run for its money. If you're okay with compromising a few inches of head room, the F-150 is lighter, has better performing brakes and for the short compromise of a few milliseconds of acceleration, you get a substantial bump in fuel economy. There is a reason the F-150 is far ahead of the Silverado in sales.

2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab vs Ram 1500 Crew Cab

The Ram 1500 makes the most power in the segment from an engine relatively smaller than the Silverado. However, all that power doesn't translate to quickness. Its saving grace is its fuel economy. Other than that, the Ram 1500 is an okay-ish car. Good braking performance, but smaller cabin space and a smaller cargo bed. The choice isn't too hard here.

2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab vs GMC Sierra

The Silverado-Sierra gang. These sibling cars share the same platform, the same mechanics, and mostly the same performance numbers. Well .. Mostly. Here the Sierra outperformed the Silverado. The cabin space and the cargo bed have identical space. Despite having the same brakes and curb weight, the Sierra has better braking performance. Also, The internals on the Sierra are better made. After this comparison, it's surprising to see that the sales of the Sierra are lower than the Silverado.

2020 GMC Sierra

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.2/10

The Silverado carries the American spirit on its back. It has been a constant companion of the American public for decades. Despite some of its competitors performing better in certain areas, the Silverado has been the one with the most consistency. For the price, the Silverado is one of the most well priced vehicles out there. With various configurations on offer, the Silverado can never be a bad option.
