The current generation of the Silverado was revealed in 2019. It became lighter, got a bigger bed and added more features. Ever since the SUV markets are on the rise, companies are doing whatever they can to keep their pickup trucks engaging. We believe they have just hit the jackpot with this generation of the Silverado.

Overall Rating

The Silverado 1500 Regular Cab WT has only one trim and is offered in both RWD and 4WD. It comes with a V6 engine with 285 horsepower. It does lack certain amenities, but is more than capable of getting the job done.

Competing with the Silverado is the Ford F-150 and the GMC Sierra 1500. Both are very capable machines and will give the Silverado a tough competition.

The Silverado 1500 Regular Cab comes only in one trim, the 1500 Work Truck, or WT. This is available both in RWD and 4WD. The price starts from $28,300.

What configuration do we recommend?

With only one trim available, the choice between the RWD or the 4WD depends on the buyer. If you have a lot of towing work to do, the RWD is a better option as it has slightly better towing capacity.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Engine and Performance

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Work Truck (phew, that's a mouthful) is powered by a massive 4.3L V6 engine. Putting such a massive engine into a truck was a good decision. It is able to handle the heft of the Silverado with relative ease. Even uphill acceleration poses no problem. With massive towing capacity, this engine very easily handles any challenge one throws at it.

 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Engine 4.3L V6

The V6 is paired with a 6 speed automatic transmission. Gear shifts are quick. When the driver demands sudden acceleration, the Silverado doesn't skip a beat to drop to a lower gear and thrust forward. One can also set to manual mode to get complete control over the gear shifts.

Ford has been known to make more power from relatively smaller engines. The same can be seen here. The 3.3L V6 in the F-150 makes the best in class power, 290 horsepower. It might make more power than the class, but fails to produce more torque. The Silverado and the Sierra have the exact same power figures. They both make 285 horsepower and 305 lb ft of torque. For a pickup truck, we believe torque matters more, and the Ford F-150 is at a clear disadvantage.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab 0-60?

For a pickup as big as the Silverado, a 0-60 time of 7 seconds is quite impressive, especially considering the power it makes. Despite the absolute number, acceleration is linear and smooth. There are certain grunts from the engine but they are a part of the character this massive vehicle has. The response of the pedal is satisfying, with no obvious delay. Although, the pedal does feel heavy

The satisfaction from the Ford F-150 during acceleration feels much lighter than the Silverado. The performance numbers of the Ford and the GMC are not yet available.

How does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Handle?

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Acceleration

The Silverado handles like a much lighter vehicle than it is. It stays planted on the road and instills confidence in the driver even at high speeds. While there is significant body roll in the corners, that can be excused seeing the smooth ride the Silverado delivers. The steering does feel slightly on the hard side, but is very responsive. Tire vibrations are at a minimum.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab 60-0?

Considering its weight, the Silverado’s brake performance is at par with the class. The pedal response is linear and predictable, however, a little less pedal travel would have made using the brakes more comfortable. In a panic stop test while travelling at 60 mph, the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab stops in 126 feet.

The Ford F-150 has the best braking performance in the class, which is to be expected considering the fact it is the lightest here. While the Silverado and the Sierra have the same weight and the same braking setup, here the Silverado performs better. However, the difference between the two is within the margin of error.

How much towing power does the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab have?

The Silverado, with its 4.3L V6, is able to tow upto 10000 pounds. To put the into perspective, that is more than double its own body weight. These metrics are for the RWD Regular Cab. The 4WD version has slightly less towing capacity, at 9800 pounds.

The champ of the towing world is the Ford F-150, with a maxing towing load of 12,100 pounds. The Silverado and the Sierra are the same here too, with a tow capacity of 10000 pounds.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Fuel Economy

The massive V8 in the Silverado is able to spit out manageable fuel economy. In the city roads, it manages 16 mpg while getting 21 mpg on the highway. With a fuel tank of 28 gallons, the Silverado is able to manage a decent range. However, the V6 in the Silverado has active fuel management technology, which cuts off half the cylinders in an engine to better save fuel. How much fuel is saved however is up for discussion.

The Sierra and the Silverado share the same exact fuel economy rating. Both have a combined average of 17 mpg. The king of the hill here is the Ford F-150, with a combined average 22 mpg, considerably higher than the others in the class. Where the F-150 lacks is the range available due to its smaller fuel tank.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Interior

7.0/10

Inside, the Silverado offers a commanding seating position. The driver sits high which gives a clear view of the road. Seeing down the nose of this pickup truck is not easy but manageable. Visibility out the back is good too, but there are some blind spots which make reversing difficult. That is taken care off by the reverse camera. The side mounted rear view mirrors are bifocal, one for rear view traffic and a small section which is a trailer view mirror. Road and wind noise is present but never enough to overshadow the insides. The internals of the Silverado feel slightly generic. Although they are made and finished beautifully, they have no major characteristic which can make them stand out. The seats are made from vinyl. The floor mats are also vinyl. The middle bench seat is standard. Single zone climate control is standard here.

While the internals of the Silverado have decent craftsmanship, Chevrolet needs to rev them up if they wish to keep the customers coming.

The interiors of all the three cars in the class are very comparable. To a layman they might seem identical. Apart from slightly different materials and styling, the overall look of all the internals are basically the same. The Silverado and Sierra both tie for the spot of class leader when it comes to internal space. The Ford F-150 falls behind here, which makes it the last in class. Its shoulder and leg room is comparable, but has a lot less head room.

What features does the Infotainment system of the Silverado 1500 have?

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Infotainment

The Silverado uses Chevrolets Infotainment 3 system, which houses a 7 inch touchscreen. The touchscreen is quick and responsive to the touch. It also has bluetooth connectivity, which is capable of connecting up to 2 devices at a time. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard. One can easily control their phones via the voice command passthrough. There are a total of 2 speakers in the cabin, which might seem much but there is only one row. They’re quite enough.

How big is the cargo bed in the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab?

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Cargo Bed

The cargo bed of the Silverado is its main source of interest. The bed in the rear is huge. Chevrolet claims it offers up to 20% more cargo space than its competitors. Accessing the bed is made easy, thanks to the steps and grip handle integrated into the design. Apart from that, each corner of the bed has 3 cargo hooks. Every corner can bear a max load of 500 pounds, which is impressive. The Silverado no longer has the slow lowering cargo door. It has been replaced with a free-hinged door which falls like any other door. However, the door is very light now which makes it easy to open or close the door.

Again, both the Silverado and Sierra tie for the spot of class leader. The Ford F-150 trails behind, with a cargo space of 77.4 cubic feet.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Exterior

The “WT” in Silverado 1500 Regular Cab WT stands for Work Truck. Being a work truck, the outside of the Silverado is rugged and seems ready for any kind of job. The front of the Silverado has a massive grille, split in the middle. The split bar has Chevrolet’s name written on it. The headlights are also split. This model has the halogen lights as standard. The tail lights however are LED and integrate perfectly with the overall design structure of the body. The bulky hood integrates well with the overall design structure of the truck. The 20 inch wheels actually feel small here. The tires are standard all weather tires. The powerful suspension makes the truck seem lifted. Finally, the trunk bed is exposed. It doesn't have an integrated trunk lid or cover.

The dimensions of the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra are essentially the same. The difference in their measures are of a fraction of an inch. The Ford F-150 is a smaller vehicle than the Silverado and the Sierra. It is slightly shorter in height and has a slightly more ground clearance, which leads to compromised headroom.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Safety

Chevrolet has equipped the Silverado with many safety features. The Silverado comes standard with 6 airbags and a rear camera. It also lets you know if your backing into an oncoming car, for example if you’re backing in a crowded parking lot. The Silverado also monitors your blind spots to avoid any unwanted crashes. With front and rear parking assists, the massive car is easy to navigate in tight spaces. Some other Safety features are as follows:

  • 4 Wheel ABS
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Post-Collision Safety Systems
  • Stability Control
  • Emergency Braking Assist

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Competition

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Work Truck vs 2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab

Between the clash of the Silverado and the F-150, the latter has come out on top on most of the segments. It makes more power, has better fuel economy, has slightly better interiors and a higher towing capacity. The places where the Ford lacks are where the Silverado is ahead, which are more cabin room and a class leading bed. While from the “getting stuff done” point of view. The bigger bed is an attractive pitch, the Silverado has a lot more caveats which makes it a difficult pick.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Work Truck vs 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab

The Sierra and the Silverado are essentially the same car. They have a similar engine, share the same performance numbers and similar dimensions. The choice between the two lies in user preference and on brand likability. The GMC Sierra has better interiors than the Silverado though, which can be a deciding factor.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Final Verdict

The Chevy Silverado is one of the beefiest pickup trucks for its make and price range. With bang on power, a massive bed and on point towing capacity, the Silverado makes for a potent package for daily work use. The “Work Truck” is a rugged and basic parcel, which means it lacks the interior panache some on the competitors offer for the same price range, but the Silverado gets the job done.
