When your trade is of most importance for you, a pickup is naturally the choice of vehicle you prefer to drive. In fact, your lifestyle could very well be defined by the kind of truck you own. One such influencer of this segment is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. As a typical work-mule, this pickup looks brawny, can carry all your load and is also fairly pocket friendly.

2020 Silverado 1500 WT
The fourth generation 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab

This current generation of Silverado 1500 was revealed in 2019. After which it became lighter, got a bigger bed and added more features. Ever since the SUV markets are on the rise, companies are doing whatever they can to keep their other products engaging, and the same is true for trucks too. As a result, only a few companies like Ford, Ram and GMC are the ones to dominate the segment.

Overall Rating

In all, there a total eight trims of this truck to choose from. Although, if you are looking to own its Regular Cab version, the WT variant is the only one to offer that. It is offered in both RWD and AWD configurations and there are also a couple of powertrain choices to opt for. On the flipside, you get a single automatic unit as stand-alone option, while the bed-size also remains unchanged.

The 2020 Silverado WT Regular Cab's 8-ft. bed is best in class

Its closest rival clearly is GMC Sierra 1500. These two could not be anymore alike. The real challanges that Chevry pickup faces come from Ford's F-150 and Ram 1500 Classic. While one is the sports car of this segment, other is regarded as the most luxurious, in that order. So what is it about the Silverado 1500 that's so exceptional? Is it the starting MSRP of $29,895? Coming up.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Features

7.9/10

There are a total of eight variants to choose from. Of which, the Regular Cab body style is available only with the Work Truck trim. So the options become fairly limited. You get multiple mechanical equipment, several standard features and a handful of optional packagaes.

These include choices of a V6 or V8 powertrain, 40/20/40 split-folding front bench-seats and the WT Convenience Package among several other features. The prices for this Chevrolet pickup for the model year 2020 start at an MSRP of $29,895 and go up to $34,495 for the WT Regular Cab AWD. That makes it one of the least expensive trucks in its segment, after the Ram 1500 Classic.

What configuration do we recommend?

With only a single trim on offer, the choices remain simple. You can either choose the standard V6 or opt for the V8. The other choice you get to make is between a RWD or an AWD configuration. For maximized output, pairing the Work Truck Regular Cab with the optional V8 and AWD setup is definitely recommended. This is still a capable pickup otherwise.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Work Truck is powered by a hunky, if not massive, 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6 engine. That V6 puts out 285 hp and 305 lb.-ft. torque. Together with the help of a six-speed automatic unit, all that power can be put down either to the rear two-wheels or all the wheels of this pickup. This enables it to handle all the heft with relative ease. Altogether, this engine very easily handles any challenge one throws at it.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab gets a V6 as standard while a V8 is optional

In case that is not enough, there is an optional 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine making 355 hp and 383 lb.-ft. torque. All the other factors remain the same. You get choices of RWD and AWD drive types to which power is communicated via the same six-speed automatic unit. In all, the real difference this optional V8 makes is to the towing capacity of 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 light-duty pickup.

Ford has been known to make more power from relatively smaller engines. The same can be seen here. The 3.3L V6 of the F-150 makes 290 horsepower which second only to the Ram 1500 Classic's 305 hp V6. The Silverado and the Sierra have the exact same power figures. Still, for a pickup truck, torque matters more. That is where the Ford F-150 is at a clear disadvantage.

How quickly can Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab reach 60 mph from 0 mph?

For a pickup as big as the Silverado, its acceleration is quite impressive. Power from the 4.3-liter V6 is put ahead in a very linear manner and response is immediate. There are certain grunts from the engine but they are a part of the character this massive vehicle. Although, the pedal does feel heavy to operate which only adds to its personality.

Although, if you wish to break all hell with 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab, the other 355 hp EcoTec3 V8 should be the obvious choice. Not only does it make this light-weight pickup feel a lot more on its feet but also increases its towing and hauling capacity. When equipped with the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab can accelerate to 60 mph from zero in 6.0 seconds flat.

Nevertheless, even with the standard V6, this Chevrolet truck is the fastest of the lot with a 135 mph top speed. But none of the other pickups are quite as much fun to drive as Ford F-150 Regular Cab. Not only is it impressively composed around corners but its off-roading capabilities are off the charts.

How controlled is ride and handling of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab?

Pickups are big and bulky and not meant to be thrown around corners. That said, throw this Chevrolet pickup around on a winding road and it really comes out shining. The ride is assisted by electric power steering, tuned suspension and wider 17-inch tires. Also, the fourth generation update has made it lighter than before. These factors really make a difference in overall agility.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab handles like a much lighter vehicle than it is

As a result, the Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab handles like a much compact vehicle than it is. It stays planted on the road and instills confidence in the driver even at high speeds. Yes, the stiffer suspension can make you bounce around a bit but that is only as long as you are not carrying anything behind. Even the steering wheel feels heavy to operate but is very responsive and the vibrations are at a minimum.

How efficiently can Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab brake from 60 mph?

Considering its weight, braking performance of this pickup is well at par with the class. The pedal response is linear and predictable, however, there is quite a bit of travel before you start to feel any response. This could be a way to prevent sudden braking. Anyhow, all the wheels get disc brake as standard featuring Duralife rotors for a more lasting feedback.

Still, the weight of the vehicle definitely comes into play while braking hard. Doing so can cause serious discomfort to the occupants. In comparison, the Ford F-150 XL Regular Cab has the best braking performance in the class. That is only expected considering the fact it is the lightest here. While Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 have the same weight and also similar braking setup, the former still performs better.

What is the towing capacity of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab?

As a pickup, it becomes extremely important that it is well capable of hauling all your load, and this Chevrolet WT Regular Cab can. With its optional 5.3L V6, mated to the AWD unit, it is able to tow up to 7,000 pounds, and that is something. The same cannot be said for any of its competitors.

As is clearly evident from the table above, no other truck in this class can tow quite as much as 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab. Still, its doppleganger, 2020 GMC Sierra 1500, has exactly the same towing capacity. Their next closest rival is 2020 Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman Regular Cab with its 6,600 lbs. of towing capacity.

Even when it comes to carrying payload, the Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab leads the pack. It can carry a maximum payload of 22800 pounds. That in comparison to the F-150 XL Regular Cab's 2100 lbs. and Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman Regular Cab's 1880 lbs. payload capacity is a lot more.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Fuel Economy

7.4/10

The massive V8 of this pickup is able to spit out manageable fuel economy, courtesy its Active Fuel Management feature. This feature allows it to turn-off half the cylinders when there is no need to unnecessarily burn fuel. Consequently, on city roads it manages 16 mpg while getting 21 mpg on the highway, which is the same as the fuel economy numbers of the standard 4.3-liter V6. Only at 17 mpg combined, the V8 turns out to be more efficient overall. However, overall efficiency takes a hit when configured with the AWD setup.

That pushes its overall range to 544 miles in the city, 800 miles on the highway and 640 miles combined.

Seeing down the nose of this huge vehicle is not easy but manageable. Inside, this Chevrolet pickup offers a commanding seating position. The driver sits high which gives a clear view of the surroundings. Even visibility out the back is good , but there are some blind spots which make reversing difficult. That is taken care of by the reverse camera offered as standard.

As far as road and other noises are concerned, they are present but never enough to overshadow your inner peace. What might? The generic feel of it all. Although the cabin of this 2020 Chevrolet pickup is made and finished beautifully, it has no major characteristic that stands out. The seats are made from vinyl, as are the floor mats but single zone climate control is standard. While there is decent craftsmanship, Chevrolet needs to spice things up if they wish to keep customers coming.

The interiors of all three pickups are very comparable. Apart from slightly different materials and styling, the overall look are basically similar. All can seat a maximum of three people, and much like in all other cases, both GMC Sierra 1500 and 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab have exactly spacious interiors. It is that Ford F-150 which really impresses. Even with its shorter dimensions, it has one of the best leg space.

What Convenience features does Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab get?

There's only a single row of seats, which are 40/20/40 split-folding benches. While they are nice and supportive, they are no match to what lies inside the top-of-the-rack High Country trim. That variant is downright luxurious. It also gets a bigger 8.0-inch touchscreen. Sadly, that option is not available with 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab. There are other creature comfort features on offer though. They include:

  • 12-Volt auxiliary front power outlet
  • 2-speaker audio system
  • 4-way manual driver's seat
  • 4-way manual front passenger seat
  • Cruise Control
  • Single-zone climate control

What features are on board the Infotainment system of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab?

As the infotainment unit is part of the entire setup, it too is very basic. That does not have to be a bad thing. it is quite easy to use and very responsive. There's also a 3.5-inch monochromatic information display placed right infront of the driver. The higher seating position might interupt line of sight for some but the display is clear.

2020 Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab gets Chevrolet Infotainment 3

Then again, there's the 7.0-inch touchscreen of 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab. It definitely makes the cabin of this light-weight pickup feel a lot more advanced and modern in comparison. That 7-inch touchscreen comes with Chevrolet's Infotainment 3 system. It has other features like:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Compass

How practical is the cabin of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab?

The 40/20/40 split/folding bench seats of 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab feature several configurations that help you utilise interior space to the maximum. Besides that there are several storage spaces spread across wisely. The dash gets two glove compartments and there are bottle holders in each door too. In all, there is no shortage of space inside this Chevy pickup.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Exterior

8.0/10

The “WT” in Silverado's 1500 Regular Cab stands for Work Truck. Being a work truck, the outside of the Silverado is rugged and seems ready for any kind of job. The front of the Silverado has a massive grille, split in the middle by a blacked-out bar with Chevrolet embossed on it. This model gets halogen headlights as standard which are also split by that chunky piece in the middle.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab has chunky tires and high-rise floor

The tail lights, however, are LED and integrate perfectly with the overall design but nothing is as imposing as the front. Its bulky hood is complemented by large wheel arches made whole with wide 17-inch steel wheels. The side profile is tall, as should of such a pickup, underscored by a high-rise floor. In all, everything is well put together.

However, the less expensive models of 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab do look more inexpensive than they actually are, and a lot of it results from that blacked out grille. It looks imposing but is quite lackluster. Again, GMC Sierra 1500 is similarly sized. It is the Ford F-150 XL Regular Cab which is the most trimmed down of all trucks. Its agility results a lot from the compact dimensions.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Safety

7.9/10

Chevrolet has equipped its pickup with many safety features. Not that anyone would dare cross paths with this monster, still you can never be too sure. So besides a lot of standard safety features, several others are offered additionally too. Still, it is yet to be rated by both IIHS and NHTSA. Those safety features include:

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab vs. 2020 Ford F-150 XL Regular Cab

In this clash of the Silverado 1500 and F-150, the latter has come out on top more often. It makes more power, has better fuel economy, slightly better interior space and better handling. But if you look things closely, it is that Chevy that appears as a better prospect. Its lower fuel economy is compensated by a bigger fuel tank, so offers better range. Yes, your legs will be more comfortable in the Chevy, which can also tow more and has a bigger bed. It is also less expensive to own.

2020 Ford F-150 XL Regular Cab

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab vs. Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman Regular Cab

These two are quite closely matched. Not as much as the GMC Sierra 1500, still very. While 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT Regular Cab truck is the most spacious inside, Ram 1500 Classic offers unbeatable fuel economy. Then again, the latter has a more powerful engine but it is that Chevy that has better payload and towing capacity. Price-wise also they are not very far apart. So the real deciding factor turns out to be the brand which intrests you more. Either way there is no going wrong.

Work truck does the work

Very smooth and comfortable! The V6 is very impressive and equally impressive is the 6-speed automatic. They compliment each other very well, and that makes the whole driving experience great.

A profound chevrolet user

The best part about my truck is the price that it came for. While traditional trucks are percepted quite expensive, mine came in under 30 grand and performs all duties of expensive trucks with ease. The throttle response is accurate and doesn't lack in power by any means whatsoever. Albeit I never towed anything, I'm quite sure it will not disappoint me because it never did till now. Great work from chevrolet to give me another reason not to switch to any other brand ever.

"Silverado's poor mpg numbers"

Glad to have this flex fuel engine type which is the only thing that has been a relief against the poor mpg. Nice driveability and wonderfully crafted cabin but the poor mpg has been ruining it all

"Silverado WT is a useless piece of junk"

Getting the WT 4.3L V6 Silverado 1500 will be the biggest mistake I've ever made considering numerous reasons I discovered after bringing it home. First off, the power punched out by this 4.3L is 285 bhp which is nothing compared to it's 2.7L trim which generates more than this despite being almost half of it in terms of size. If this was not enough, the mileage in the city is less than 15 miles f...
