The Chevy Malibu is a budget-friendly sedan and Chevrolet has made it absolutely sure that it is well equipped and has a feature or two for everyone’s preference. The hybrid version of the sedan is for those who want to go green and save as much as they can on fuel bills.

The Malibu Hybrid is priced at $28,795 and uses a 1.8L 4-cylinder gasoline engine combined with 2 electric motors producing a decent power for a smooth day-to-day usage. The engine is a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) type and uses CVT to deliver power to the front wheels.

2018 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Sedan Engine and Performance

7.8/10

The Malibu Hybrid uses a gasoline-powered 1.8L 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors producing a combined output of 182 hp and 277 lb-ft torque. This configuration is coupled with CVT to deliver power to the front wheels. The motor feels refined and adequately-powered for daily usage but it tends to harsh and feels strained at higher rev range.

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is the costliest offering on the list but has the least powerful engine. All the competitors are using CVT automatic which is known for making the most from the engine. The regenerative mode in hybrids feels a bit grabby but not in the Malibu Hybrid.

Acceleration

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid rushes to 60 mph in 8.4 secs and a quarter-mile in 15.8 secs, which is a bit slower against the rivals.

The 0-60 of the Malibu is the slowest in the list but in the quarter-mile it nearly catches the Toyota Camry, the acceleration timings of the Malibu are reasonable because it is using the smallest engine, but the rivals are producing less pollution also.

Ride and Handling

The electric motors provide enough torque to jump off the line in straight-line acceleration but the engine gets coarser while approaching higher rev ranges. The steering is pretty balanced and predictable which increases the driver's confidence. The suspension feels good, as it is perfectly balanced between ride quality and handling characteristics. The car feels smooth on the road due to its handling and well-isolated cabin.

Cargo space

Storage room in a Malibu Hybrid is very restricted when compared with its only gasoline-powered version because of the position of the battery. The space of 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space is not quite usable for a sedan.
