Also same on the 2020 Equinox are the varying engine choices. It gets the standard 1.5-liter turbocharged engine along with the optional 1.6-liter diesel and the more upscale 2.0-liter powertrains. Even the six-speed automatic and the front-wheel drivetrain remain the standard options.

At a starting price of less than $24,000, the base version of the 2020 Equinox is cheaper than the likes of the Ford Escape or the Honda CR-V. However, as we move up the trim ladder, it gets significantly more expensive and is also outperformed by its rivals.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Features

8.0/10

As is the case with any SUV in this segment, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is also available in quite a few trims. This two-row crossover is available in four variants: L, LS, LT, and Premier. The base variant, L, is offered only with the standard front-wheel drivetrain, which is also standard on all the other trims. But the other trims also get an optional all-wheel drivetrain.

However, the L variant is pretty feature-loaded for its price. There are a variety of features which are offered as standard on this variant. Some standard features include driver assistance package with automatic high-beam control, a rearview camera, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking, etc.

The second-level LS variant is significantly costlier than the L but adds only a handful of extra features. The LS Convenience package equips the car with a power-adjustable driver’s seat and rear privacy glass.

After the LS, comes the LT trim of the equinox. This variant comes with two significant feature packages. One is the Infotainment package and the other is the Confidence and Convenience Package.

Lastly, there’s the Premier version which is the most costly and feature-loaded of all Equinox variants. It combines the features from all the above-mentioned variants and then adds some more. Most noticeable being its Bose sound system.

We recommend:

As the powertrain, drivetrain and transmission options remain pretty much the same throughout all Equinox’s variants, the base L seems to be the most logical choice. At a price of less than $24,000, the L variant is a pretty well-rounded package. The other trims are significantly more expensive.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Engine and Performance

5.5/10

Powering the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is a 1.5-liter turbo-four engine that makes 170 hp and 203 lb.-ft. torque. However, as has been the case with Equinox’s from the past, this year too the SUV should get two other engine choices. The 1.6-liter turbo diesel and the other, more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.

A six-speed automatic transmission is offered as standard on the 1-5-liter and 1.6-liter powertrains. The larger 2.0-liter engine, that makes 252 hp and 203 lb.-ft. torque is mated to a 9-speed automatic.

The different transmissions innately drive the front wheels of this SUV. There’s an optional all-wheel drivetrain on offer too. However, pairing the Equinox’s base 1.5-liter engine with the all-wheel-drive makes the already slouched powertrain feel all the more out of breath.

How fast is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV?

Official data regarding the 2020 Equinox’s acceleration is yet to be released. Although, from what we do know about Chevy’s engine, it’s not a very potent one. You’d have to bury your feet on the paddle and wait for a while before the engine on this SUV comes to life.

What about the braking performance of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV?

For a compact crossover, the brakes on the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox do a pretty decent job. The pedal responds appropriately to effort. Feedback from the brakes is neither too subtle nor is it overtly sharp so as to surprise people inside this SUV.

Tests show that this Chevy SUV managed to stop within 121 feet from a speed of 60 miles per hour under emergency braking. The brakes also feature an automatic emergency braking function to further aid the driver.

What about its driving dynamics?

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox aims to be an SUV comfortable enough for those long drives across towns and cities. So the suspension on this SUV has been set accordingly too. They are soft enough to offer a plush ride.

However, that doesn’t mean that the Equinox suffers because of its soft suspension setup. The amount of body control in this small crossover is pretty impressive for an SUV. Despite being a comfortable family SUV, the Equinox feels pretty easy to drive.

A lot of that has to do with its steering wheel which offers pretty accurate feedback. It lets the driver feel the road under, which in turn inspires confidence. The 17 or 18-inch wheels that are standard on the Equinox work well to prevent the unpleasantness of the road from reaching the cabin. However, with the optional 19-inch wheels, expect the ride quality to stiffen up significantly.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Economy

There’s a reason why the base 1.5-liter engine of the 2020 Equinox feels so gasping for power. It’s the trade-off for better fuel economy. The automatic transmission on this Chevrolet is a bit reluctant to downshift in scenarios where more power is needed.

This helps the Equinox come out as a more fuel-efficient SUV. The only downside to this being the other SUVs in this comparison that offer more or less similar MPGs while being more powerful at the same time. There’s the optional 2.0-liter engine that makes up for the Equinox’s base engine. It offers more power and also returns a decent fuel economy.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Interior

7.2/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is adequately comfortable all around. The amount of headroom and legroom is above average in the first as well as the second row. The seats are also pretty comfortable and offer plenty of angular support.

Also getting in and out of those seats is fairly easy thanks to the Equinox’s low step-in height. The steering wheel though allows for a very limited amount of telescoping adjustment. As a result, some drivers might have to sit more upright than the others.

Other than that, the 2020 Equinox is a very comfortable SUV overall and should prove its purpose for four people looking to have fun on a vacation.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox satisfies like a small SUV with the kind of technology that comes along with it:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Navigation system
  • Head-up display
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Satellite radio
  • Smart device integration

Creature comforts on offer in the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV

An able SUV has to have more than enough space on the inside to justify its practicality. It should also have enough features that make you feel at home. The creature comfort features on this Equinox include:

  • Multi-Zone A/C
  • Cruise control
  • Cooled/heated front and rear seats
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Keyless entry
  • Power driver/passenger seats
  • Remote engine start
  • Seat-massage
  • Premium sound system
  • Auxiliary audio input

What about utility?

All that space created for the driver and the passengers on the inside of the 2020 Equinox seems to have been siphoned off of this SUV’s trunk. At 29.9 cubic feet, this Chevy offers more space than most of the sedans but is not at par with other compact SUVs.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV Cargo volume
The 2020 Equinox seems to have been siphoned off of this SUV’s trunk. At 29.9 cubic feet

An SUV's practicality is not only based on how accommodating it is for people but also on 1600how much, it can stow. No group of people, friends or family, is going to go on a vacation and not bring anything else but themselves. So it is mandatory that the SUV be adequately spacious for people and their belongings.

Not that the Equinox’s trunk is too small to offer decent practicality. It’s just that when compared to others, it doesn’t seem all that efficient.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Exterior

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox looks unmistakably like a proper compact SUV. It is big enough to mark its presence yet small enough to offer a controlled ride in tight city spaces. On the front is the golden bowtie placed on top of a grille that has been split into parts horizontally.

From the side, the Equinox looks rather imposing. It has a strong shoulder line with a slightly sloping roof. Plus the roof rails on top add to the bold look of this SUV besides providing utility.

Things on the back have been kept pretty simple for the 2020 Equinox. But the back looks somewhat uninteresting as compared to the rest of the design of this SUV.

What are those eye-catching features?

There’s nothing too extraordinarily striking about the Equinox’s exterior design. The most noteworthy design elements of this SUV are:

The list of safety features on the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox includes:

  • Back-up camera
  • Cross-traffic alert
  • Rear parking aid
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • ABS
  • Night vision
  • Tyre pressure monitor
  • Brake assist
  • Stability control

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Competition

2020 Chevrolet Equinox vs. Ford Escape

Both these SUVs rank fairly against each other. However, the Ford Escape tilts the odds in its favor by a bit. Its base 1.5-liter engine is more powerful than the Equinox’s. At the same time, the Escape offers more practicality by offering a significantly larger boot.

2020 Ford Escape Sedan

2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV vs. Honda CR-V

This is a bit of an unfair comparison. The CR-V is downright the better SUV of the two. It has a bigger engine. Still, it is just as fuel-efficient as the Equinox. The trunk of the CR-V is almost ten cubic inches larger than the Chevy’s trunk too. On top of all this, this Honda is just marginally more expensive than the Equinox.

2020 Honda CR-V Sedan

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Final Verdict

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox looks like a proper crossover but actually isn’t. The engine is not so powerful. Its mileage is only subpar, and the cargo space is just about adequate. All other SUVs in this comparison offer a lot more for more or less the same amount of money. Sure, the Equinox is a great car for all-around drivability, but an SUV needs to more than just that.
