2020 Chevrolet Equinox Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: June 1, 2020

A comfortable ride and driveability of a sedan, along with a bit more space and utility and more confident negotiation with bumps and potholes. This is exactly what the popular notion of an SUV today has been reduced to by the SUV and Crossover conquest. The dominant segment has not only put an existential crisis on other segments but has also indulged in some role-playing.

Yes, we still have some hardcore 4x4s today, but the more desirable ones are those which are well-versed with the formula of balance and versatility. The case of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is a perfect example of how efficient and fruitful, the aforementioned balancing skills could be. No doubt with its beautiful blend of comfort, efficiency and practicality, the Equinox is Chevrolet’s best selling vehicle ever, after the Silverado.

Overall Rating

Though the second-gen Equinox outsold every other Chevrolet in 2016, reciprocating its strong appeal, it did have some shortcomings like an awkward face and uninspiring driveability. However, those errors were beautifully rectified in the third-gen 2018 Equinox, which even the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is based upon. In its third generation, the mass-favorite compact-SUV is smarter as well as more elegant and fun-to-drive than ever.

No major changes for 2020, but you do get a more inclusive standard features list and some revised optional packages. Other than that you still get the familiar two-tone interiors with abundant space for occupants as well as your coffee-mugs, two turbo engines and great efficiency. Though it does feel a stretch behind its more updated rivals, thankfully the updated 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is already on the cards. For the moment though, let's have a look at how the 2020 Equinox with an MSRP of $23,800, fairs against its prominent rivals like the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V.

You get to choose your 2020 Chevrolet Equinox in flour available trims as earlier. The range starts with the base “L”, LS, LT and Premier. All models come standard with a 1.5 liter four-cylinder turbo engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, you can also configure the LT and Premier models with a 2.0 liter turbo engine that comes paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

There is also a $1600 AWD system that can be hooked to any of the trims except the base model. The 2020 Equinox comes with more standard features than before, but there are still some more exotic features reserved for the higher trim levels. Sadly though, you can get the Chevrolet Equinox L model only upon special order. However, if you can't afford a new mid trim, the previous models of the Equinox will offer you good value for money.

Trim to choose?

Our pick among the lot is the Equinox LT, clubbed with the 2.0 liter turbo engine and AWD. For a compact SUV, the LT is aptly loaded with most of the features that you would need on a daily basis. Furthermore, the upgraded engine and traction enhancing hardware brings in more power, enhanced stability and more driving fun.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Engine and Performance

7.7/10

Gone is the diesel and the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is left with two strong and efficient engine options. The familiar duo of a 170 hp 1.5 liter turbo and a 252 hp 2.0 liter turbo engine remains the same. Majority of the Equinoxes are likely to carry the 1.5 liter unit, which might be less powerful than its rivals on paper but feels capable enough on the move. The engine never feels short of power and with a strong low-range it feels pretty energetic as well.

Every 2020 Equinox comes standard with a 170 hp 1.5 Liter turbo-four engine

The only set-back with the 1.5 liter turbo is the sluggish 6-speed auto which does shift smoothly, but takes a fair amount of time to get going. In contrast something like a Mazda CX-5 or a Honda CR-V have a more engaging power distribution with their refined and efficient transmissions.

However, it's the optional 2.0 liter turbo that brings out the very best of the Equinox. With the extra 82 horsepower and plentiful torque, the Equinox is more spirited off the line and more eager in highway passings. However, you also notice a small hint of turbo lag at startups, as is the case with most turbo powered pots.

How quick is the 0-60 and quarter mile?

Regardless of the engine configuration, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox will surprise you everytime you floor it flat. With its lighter and more aerodynamic body than its competitors, the Equinox has a respectable grunt for its class and size.

With either of the available engines, the 2020 Equinox is quicker than its rivals

With the standard 1.5 liter engine, the FWD 2020 Chevrolet Equinox races from 0-60 mph in a respectable 8.4 seconds, which is best in class. The acceleration figure gets even more pronounced taking into account that the Equinox has the least powerful standard engine in its class. With an efficient and more refined transmission, the Equinox certainly promises to put-up an even better show.

When equipped with the 2.0 liter turbo engine, and a slick-shifting 9-speed auto, the 2020 Equinox brings the 0-60 mph in just 6.4 seconds. Thanks to the eagerness and potentness of the 2.0 liter pot. Things get even more interesting with the AWD on, which helps the Equinox with enhanced grip during startups.

How do the brakes perform?

Trying to deliver the best composition in the compact-SUV segment, the 2020 Equinox is also armed with one of the best braking apparatus in its class. There are ventilated discs and ABS at all four corners associated by Automatic Emergency Braking.

The 2020 Equinox comes standard with ventilated discs and ABS at all four corners

The brake pedal is neither too firm nor too squishy and even the braking effort feels very disciplined. However, the same is not true for braking results. From inside the cabin, you would barely notice that the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox stops from 60-0 in just 115 feet which is the best in segment.

Considering the fact that the Equinox has the longest wheelbase and body-length among its rivals, its braking performance gets pronounced further. Also noteworthy is the fact it does not have the largest set of discs either. That's what a lightweight body and better weight distribution can do to you.

How does it ride and handle?

Take the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox out for a spin and the first thing you notice is how compliant the ride is. The nicely tuned suspension soaks up bumps very well and the comfortable interiors further add to the smoothness inside. The steering wheel has adequate weight into it and feels very direct and precise that allows for easy maneuverability.

Smooth ride, easy handling and well-controlled grip are the trademarks of the 2020 Equinox

Surefooted on straight stretches, the Equinox does exhibit a small amount of body-roll, but that too is not shabby at all. Not the very best out there, but for its class and price, the 2020 Equinox offers a fairly silent ride as well. The only major downfall with the Equinox is its larger turning radius which makes it difficult to fiddle with in tight parking spaces.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Economy

7.8/10

Efficiency has been one of the important aspects of the Equinox. Even though it drops the 40 mpg diesel engine for 2020, it doesn't miss out on its traditional virtues. With an efficiency tuned 1.5 liter standard engine, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox offers 26, 31 and 28 mpg combined.

The economy figures are not the best in the segment but are fair enough for a vehicle of this class and size. Among its rivals, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V turn out to be the most efficient with their combined output of 30 mpg. Thanks to their more efficient and refined transmission.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Interior

7.5/10

No changes on the inside either and the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox carries forward the clean and spacious interiors layout of its outgoing 2019 model. You still get a nice minimalistic dashboard along with a larger windshield, lower window line and a panoramic sunroof for optimal airiness inside the cabin.

Though, most of the contact surfaces are hard plastics, the perforated leather trim on the dashboard and the door panels do enhance the interior ambience. You also get chrome surrounds on the vertical A.C vents that add a sense of “freshness” in the otherwise ho-hum cabin.

The seats are wide and supportive at both the benches with ample all-around space for taller occupants. The seats are comfortable on longer journeys but the perforated leather is a bit on the harder side and is not as smooth as some of its rivals.

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox offers ample space for passengers at both the benches

The front seats can get upto 8-way power adjustability along with heated and ventilated functionality. For a more pleasurable witer ride you can also have the 2020 Equinox with heated rear seats and a heated steering as well.

What are the creature comforts on the inside?

  • 8-way power bucket front seats

How good is the infotainment system?

Infotainment needs in the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox are taken care of by either a 7.0 inch or a 8.0 inch touchscreen display. The system runs on Chevrolet Infotainment 3 platform and standard with Android Auto, Apple Carplay, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Satellite Radio and in-built Navigation is standard in the Premier and optional in other trims.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox has an easy to use touchscreen infotainment system

Audio needs are monitored by a standard 6-speaker sound system which is not very soothing to the ears though. However, you can upgrade to the optional 7-speaker Bose stereo system for a rich audio experience. The infotainment system has a clean user-interface and is more responsive and easy to use than its rivals. However, it's let down by its poor graphics and poor tilt-angle that reflects tons of light making it difficult to read under bright sunlight. Some of the infotainment and connectivity features of the 2020 Chevrolet include:

What are the key infotainment features available?

  • 8.0 inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • Bluetooth and USB connectivity
  • 7-speaker Bose audio system
  • Satellite Radio and Navigation
  • Rear seat infotainment system with DVD player
  • Wireless charging pad
  • 4.2 inch digital drivers display

Is the cargo area generous enough?

Despite its longer body and an aptly spacious cabin, one particular area where the Equinox disappoints specifically is its cargo space. Tha story remains pretty much the same even with its present third generation. That being said, the 2020 Equinox offers a 29.9 cu-ft of cargo space which is the smallest among its rivals here.

7.0/10

On the outside, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox follows the same gentle and humble silhouette introduced in 2018. The front end is dominated by the signature Chevrolet grille flanked by somewhat pentagonal yet slim headlights with DRLs. The head lamps are Halogen/Xenon units in the lower trims while the Premier gets full LEDs.

However, the turn signals integrated with fog lamp units toward the lower fender could have been done in a better way, but it looks cool though. For visual distinction, the lower models come with black front grille with chrome highlight, while the higher trims get chrome bars as well. The side profile is highlighted by the low-slung body, along with chrome window line and roof rails that give it a sleek yet mascular appeal.

However, with the 2.0 liter turbo, you do get two chrome tip exhaust pipes that work well with the rear profile.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox rear three-quarter view

The Chevrolet Equinox might be the longest in its class, but it doesn't look bulky or ugly by any means. Instead, the Equinox has its own distinctive charisma with a beautiful blend of conventional design on a modern canvas. Yes, it does seem a bit aged when compared to its more fresh rivals, but the revised 2022 Equinox shall address the grouse very soon.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Safety

8.0/10

Strong crash test ratings from top safety institutions have always been an essential part of the Equinox’s success story. The popular crossover has been awarded top safety grades in the past and it receives similar honor even in 2020. That being said, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox has been awarded a 5-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick by IIHS.

While the previous model year of the Equinox did have an extensive suite of safety features, most of them were either limited to higher trims or carried an extra premium. For 2020, Chevrolet checks that box with an advanced suite of safety and driver assistance features like automated emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlamps, and lane-keeping assist as standard. There are some other key safety available across the lineup that include:

What are the key safety features?

  • Front and Rear Ventilated disc
  • 4-wheel ABS
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert with Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • OnStar & Chevrolet Connected Services capability
  • Rear Park Assist
  • HD Surround Vision
  • StabiliTrak, electronic stability control system with traction control

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Competition

Chevrolet Equinox SUV vs Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is a popular name in the compact SUV segment and its current generation was launched back in 2017. It offers good utility, plush and roomy interiors, comfortable ride and solid safety ratings as well. Compared to the Equinox, the CR-V is marginally better, but misses upon the driving fun, the rich feature list and diverse character of the Equinox

Chevrolet Equinox vs Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 is Toyota’s best selling crossover in the States and for several good reasons. It's safe and reliable, has a strong and powerful engine, robust looks and character, fuel efficiency and multiple models to pick from as well. While the RAV4 could be way pricier than the Equinox with options, the Equinox offers a more comprehensive package with its comfortable ride, good ride, and handling, a plethora of features and off-course, an approachable price tag.

Chevrolet Equinox vs Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is a relatively fresh joinee into the compact-SUV league and has earned quite a fame for its athletic character. The CX-5 offers a modern and stylish look, premium and rich interior, strong feature list and a sporty driving experience. However, the Equinox turns out to be a better value with its balance of comfort, driveability, practicality and better interior space.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Final Verdict

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox a very good compact crossover that delivers upon all the promises of the segment. It looks good (if not best), has a clean and spacious interior, comfortable ride and enjoyable handling, good MPG, along with plenty of features and storage spaces inside the cabin. The Equinox should definitely be on your wishlist if you are looking for a compact SUV that should take you to office and drop the kids to school comfortably and calmly.

Not at all. The Equinox is Chevrolet's second best selling product after the Silverado, ever. With such a strong market demand, discontinuing seems nothing less than a joke. In-fact, Chevrolet has already showcased the new updated 2021 Equinox which gets revised exterior and interior along with updated features. When launched somewhere in the later half next year, Chevrolet expects the 2021 Equinox to generate even more volumes.

What are the updates in the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox?

No major changes have been made to the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox and the line-up remains mostly the same. However, owing to the market trends there are some minute and essential changes brought in. First up is the dismissal of the diesel engine and second is the revised suite of standard features, especially the driver assistance and safety ones. The optionally available automated emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlamps, and lane-keeping assist, in the 2019 model, are now standard across the 2020 Equinox family.

"Equinox has the most noteworthy design"

This is my first new suv before owning a few used ones and Chevrolet has left me speechless with the drive quality of equinox. The best part about the drive is it's quiet interiors(has some cabin noise but nothing which irritates). mpg is the only thing that has been bothering me since I got it. with the tank size it has, it amplifies the efficiency issue.

"Midnight blue has everything"

With such a smooth handling, I don't think anything can go wrong. Equinox 2020 has the best handling feel among all 7 cars I have owned till now. That being said, the headlamps are not strong enough and I have to drive diligently especially when going through dark empty streets.

"Drives great"

Driving is becoming easier with each day in which inturn is improving the overall safety while driving. Talking about daily city driving, equinox sorts most of the hardship and short comings of other SUV's and provides what is actually needed by driver instead of wanted(which is more important). We don't realize it but actually chevy does. Thats what equinox feels like.

"Turbo has it's highs and lows"

Turbo actually proves to be helpful with the smaller engine and makes up for that power lacks. At the same time it increases the efficiency (not directly). What I don't like is this turbo lag and lacks that instant throttle response in every way. On highways I never notice that but in city, you feel like driving a jalopy until turbo kicks in. I know this is normal but I'm asking why can't this cha...

"Solid so far"

I for one am truly happy with the way it has been performing so far, it is comfortable, moves well and there are no issues that I came across.
