In the land of twisting roads and windy valleys, off-roading has prevailed as a never-ending trend for generations. Long before SUVs and crossovers took over, some pickups left their treads all over the US soil. Even though the vehicles today have changed for the better, they fail to provide the stature, which was housed by pickups. Perhaps this is the reason why the sands of time have hardly impacted the clamor for these incredible machines.

Speaking about pickups and not acknowledging the contribution of Chevrolet will be like swimming in a lake without water - never happening! As long as the brand has been in business, one name has always been associated with Chevrolet’s pickup truck legacy. It is Colorado pick up. Although not a mammoth hauler like its counterpart Silverado, it has accumulated a lot of admiration from the crowd that appreciates these designs. No doubt the 2020 Colorado will be coming with minimal changes to its structure since the brand is planning a refresh in the foreseeable future. For the 2020 model year, however, there seems to be a small alteration in the price of the extended cab version of the ZR2 line, tagged with a mark of $40,295.

Overall Rating

Targeting the populace with a modest requirement, Colorado gave a quick boost to the pickup truck segment immediately following its launch. Yes, there were a few contenders in the small truck segment already, but the trust in Chevrolet won it all. Meanwhile, celebrating this success, the brand launched a ZR2 version of Colorado, which turned out to be a treat for fanatics around the states. For those who are unfamiliar with the term, ZR2 is a performance-oriented department in Chevrolet that distinguishes between pickup trucks and SUVs.

Despite its miniature stature, Colorado ZR2 is extremely capable off-road thanks to its retro fittings dating back to the very basic designs that ruggedly pulled off great off-roading adventures. Along with the nostalgic fittings, Colorado ZR2 extends itself towards contemporary technologies that house most of today’s classic terrain haulers. It is offered as the only trim that hems in all of the best offerings from the brand in one powerful and aggressive packaging. Yet you get features like 17-inch alloy wheels with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, facelifts in the front fascia, and blacked-out grille and rear bumper and redesigned tailgate, all part of this year’s update. With all of these changes in place, the Colorado ZR2 draws competition from the GMC Canyon AT4 and the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 diesel Extended Cab Pricing and Features

Emphasizing the driving characteristics of the pickup, this version of Colorado adds a few kits that could take the off-roading experience to the next level. Along with the basic accessories deemed to take it away from normal roads, the brand offers a wide range of additional kits, not only limited to the powertrain but also extending the privilege of customization towards apparatus that triggers aesthetic appeal. Some of the standard features that come along with normal purchase are as follows:

Which trim do we recommend?

As a matter of fact, the ZR2 extended cab is only as good as itself since it is the only trim on offer. But, if you would like us to compare it with the short box or the Bison variant, it is susceptible to the least damage from the two and retains the optimal spot. That may be a statement that comes as a response to the analysis done by our team as to which version of this truck is more likely to be in the limelight. Well, considering the choices thus far, the ZR2 extended cab basic version is the most sold yet.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 diesel Extended Cab Engine and Performance

Belonging at the bottom of the truck pyramid, Colorado naturally comes equipped with a humble setup. However, for the ZR2 version, the brand makes a slight exception to the rules, thus fitting it with a more aggressive motor. To describe it in the least, Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 opens the hood to reveal a 3.6L naturally aspirated V6, having the best in class horsepower. As opposed to the 2.4 L inline-4, this upsized assembly spits around 308 horses with a 275 lb-ft. of torque.

Mated to an 8-Speed automatic transmission developed to hone the ride dynamics, raises transmission upshift points to provide more power to accelerate with a trailer or heavy load. In the reverse situation, it raises downshift points to use engine compression to help slow the truck instead of merely braking. These characteristics highlight the amount of engineering the brand has put into making this truck. Additionally, driving the Colorado ZR2 on all its wheels is the Autotrac 2-Speed transfer case, a valuable consolation to the already crafty powertrain.

As far as numbers are concerned, the Colorado ZR2 and the GMC Canyon AT4 share the same DNA. Based on the same platform, both these trucks lead the segment with the best figures on offer. On the other hand, the Toyota Tacoma TRD takes things a bit easy and produces the least figures.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab Acceleration:

It doesn’t really matter how the Colorado ZR2 extended pack fairs in a straight line since it is not its domain of work. Nevertheless, as a tradition, we tested the 4WD version of the pickup without any connected load. The result was not shocking either, since Chevrolet has the low torque on offer. Figuratively, Colorado made it to 60 MPH in 8.4 seconds and huffed past the quarter-mile in a whole 16.4 seconds. Well, had you been considering even a mild-sports car, these figures would have popped your eyes out with a pessimistic astonishment. But, for a truck that is destined to transport loads, it does quite a decent job in the acceleration test.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab hits 0-60 mph just in 8.1 sec

Among its choice of peers, Colorado doesn't seem like it is struggling, in fact, runs past them by a large margin. Even the Canyon, which is just its replica, is beaten by its time by almost a second. Meanwhile, Tacoma TRD stays away for a brief amount of time. Even in the attainment of the top speed, the 2020 Colorado ZR2 stands on the top with 135MPH, followed by Tacoma TRD Off-Road only managing to reach 115MPH.

For a vehicle carrying weight, brakes are its first line of defense during adverse conditions. Technically, Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a completely sound automobile with hostile mechanics. The Colorado ZR2 equips with the best set of brakes but somehow fails to build upon them. On the other hand, the twin GMC Canyon AT4 does marginally better than the former. In this department, even Tacoma TRD Off-Road stands head-to-head with Colorado ZR2.

How does the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab Handle?

Handling this tiny pickup may not seem a herculean task, but it certainly is a little daunting, mainly because of the blind spots created by the altered height in the front and the sides, since its ORVMs are also quite average. Apart from this anthropometric flaw, the dynamics of Colorado ZR2 are more than pleasing with the ZR2 off-road package replacing the standard shocks with DSSV Multimatic suspension dampers, which offer an excellent off-road experience.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab driving view

On the other hand, like any pickup, it feels a bit lead-footed on the tarmac, with the sterling losing its feel soon in the speed band. Yes, the additional packages work effectively to enhance vehicle dynamics but can only be understood when taken away from normal roads.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 diesel Extended Cab Fuel Economy

Economy was never the stronghold of a truck, and even today, technology has helped less to make it possible. Likewise, the Colorado ZR2 now with a mightier engine and a startling accessory kit make it even more ingenious. The combined fuel economy for the pickup is 17 MPG, which is quite appreciable given the character. But again, this success can be attributed to some specific areas of the powertrain, for instance, the 8-Speed automatic transmission, which goes into overdrive from the 7th gear itself, with the sith gear ratio being 1:1. Moreover, during a cruise, the electronics ensure that the shifts come in fast and take to the higher gears as soon as possible.

Competently, one could see an arithmetic series comparing the economies of the three trucks into consideration here. The Toyota with 21 MPG under its skin tops the list, as a Toyota does against American manufacturers, while it is followed by the much sophisticated GMC Canyon AT4 by a margin of 2 MPG, and at last, stands Colorado with 17MPG.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 diesel Extended Cab Interior

Pickups with breathtaking interiors nowadays is not a rare phenomenon, given that crew cabs are grabbing more attention from the buyers than normal commercial designs. Even with a smaller cabin, the Colorado ZR2 mesmerizes the occupants with an authoritative interior layout. Yes, there is limited use of premium upholstery, but nevertheless, the use of hard plastics has also been kept under control by Chevrolet with this venture.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab front seat

Offering the generosity of opulent space, Colorado ZR2 tucks all its flaws shrewdly under the highly sophisticated seats mounted on its elevated frame. Of course, the Colorado ZR2 is a bit beefy on the pocket and thus is expected to do more with the styling and comfort, but the leeway it offers already is enough to lift your spirits. The firmly mounted seats root you like a pro and reflect absolutely no discomfort whatsoever. Then there is another aspect, the Colorado ZR2 seats only 4 individuals, thus ensuring optimum ergonomics for each, instead of squeezing in the 5th one.

Undoubtedly, Chevrolet offers the best cabin in terms of space, despite coming with only a two-door arrangement and an extended box. The GMC is almost identical to Colorado, however, it gets a less premium interior than the latter. The Toyota as usual goes with an average design, thus making ingress and egress highly cumbersome.

We all know that the Colorado ZR2 stands apart from the crowd with an irresistible fascia. However, what fewer people know is that there is an equivalent distinction provided to the insides of these trucks. Some of them are as follows:

  • Leather upholstery on seats and steering wheel
  • Multifunction steering wheel with manual tilt and telescopic adjustment
  • 6-way power driver seat with power lumbar support
  • 4-way power passenger seat with power lumbar support
  • Dual rear seats with under-seat storage
  • Heated front seats and steering wheel
  • 4.2" diagonal color Driver Information Center
  • One-touch power up/down windows
  • Power door locks
  • Remote Keyless Entry and Remote Start
  • Automatic climate control
  • Rear window defogger

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab Infotainment:

Taking your truck out for long hauls along the countryside can prove quite boring if there is no entertainment on the way. It is obvious that Chevrolet understands this better than we do since it's been in America for more generations, thus treating the feature as a necessity.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab infotainment system

To elaborate, the Colorado ZR2 has a remarkable sense of infotainment, most of which comes standard with this $40,000 truck. A close reference to the following list will grant you a better understanding of these extraordinary features:

  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • USB ports
  • Wireless Charging
  • SiriusXM
  • 4G LTE WiFi Hotspot
  • Bluetooth
  • HD Radio
  • Satellite Radio
  • Voice Recognition and operation

Although this list may feel quite sufficient, you may miss out on one crucial feature like satellite navigation. To tailor the needs of those who prefer to travel fully loaded, a $995 package ensures that you get this along with a premium Bose sound system to lift your spirits.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 diesel Extended Cab Exterior

The Colorado ZR2 is as good as any other pickup in terms of exterior styling, but in many ways better than the most, with plenty of amenities and accessories that would make it look apart from the crowd. At the same time, the 2020 model will be absolutely indistinguishable from the preceding variant, thus vouching for no updates for the upcoming model year. Despite that, the signature elements are prominent to one’s eyes as soon as the truck sets its feet in front of you.

Knowing that it is a dedicated off-roader, the first few elements that catch the eye are increased ground clearance, along with a set of blacked-out skid plates in the front and rear. LED treatment is offered as an option, but experience suggests that it is the halogen that gives better visibility in low lights. The 17” Graphite and Oxide Gold aluminum wheels mounted on the large Goodyear Wrangler Duratec tires exude the robust personality of the truck from the horizon. A lot of other features come as an option like the availability of windshield de-icer and heated ORVMs, an optimal option in cold regions of Alaska.

Of course, Chevrolet is the heaviest, given that it gets the best of accessories on offer as a standard along with some heavy-duty equipment. Besides, it also dominates the dimensional area, being the longest, widest, and the tallest pickup in the segment. The main highlight is the 8.9” of ground clearance that sets it apart from the crowd. On the other hand, some of its noticeable features are as follows:

  • 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires
  • Black rear bumper, tailgate handle, and beltline moldings
  • Projector-beam headlamps
  • Cab-mounted cargo area lamps

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 diesel Extended Cab Safety

It usually goes without saying that pickups are a dominant breed in terms of occupant safety, given their elevated stance along with a robust structure. But in an era with more awareness and modern threats, being structurally strong is not enough. To address the safety concerns, Chevrolet has taken special efforts to incorporate state of the art technologies that will give you more confidence when you go off-roading in your sturdy truck. Accordingly, the Colorado ZR2 finds itself filled with active safety features like a tire pressure monitoring system, a Stabilitrak electronic stability control system, and a few other contemporary additions to the list apart from the standard passive fittings like airbags and crumple zones. To get a better insight on each of those, please refer to the following list:

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • OnStar & Chevrolet Connected Services capable
  • HD Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver Settings to promote better driving behavior
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • 4-Wheel ABS
  • Post-Collision Safety System
  • Dual Front Side-Mounted Airbags
  • Front And Rear Head Airbags
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps
  • Auto Delay Off Headlamps

The Colorado ZR2 secured an overall 4-star rating out of a 5-star from the NHTSA. The IIHS also granted an overall “Acceptable” rating for the Colorado ZR2 because of the lack of tech implemented. Hopefully, the brand will understand its shortfalls and correct these in the 2021 model year.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 diesel Extended Cab Competition

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab vs GMC Canyon AT4

It is understood that these two vehicles are almost inseparable in numerous ways as they share the same parent. Ever since GMC took over Chevrolet, this has been an observable practice.

Nevertheless, there are a few discrepancies between the trucks against which the Colorado ZR2 shines brighter than its domestic counterpart, the Canyon AT4, the most prominent being better off-road capabilities and athletic styling to suit the needs.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Extended Cab vs 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab

Unlike the above, Toyota shares very little with Colorado ZR2 apart from being from the same segment of trucks. To be discreet, the Japanese have made it a very reliable machine, whatever be its shortcomings.

2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab

There is no way a Toyota could ever leave you stranded in the middle of a road. However, in terms of performance, comfort, convenience, safety, and all other factors that need to be considered along with reliability, it is the Colorado ZR2 that lights the way.
