The people of America have a particular licking for pickup trucks. While the full size pickups have a dominant mark in the pickup truck market, there is a constant demand for mid size pickups as well. Among the top trucks in the mid size segment stands the Chevrolet Colorado.

Colorado has made a very strong place for itself. With its reliable engine and rugged exterior, it is able to overcome any challenge it faces. The popularity of the extended cab might be less than its crew cab, but is still preferred by many.

These days, competing in the market is made difficult due to the highly capable competitors one has to compete with. Toyota’s Tacoma is an example of a very well seasoned truck which can give a tough battle to Colorado. Ford also makes an appearance for the slice of the cake, with its Ranger. Finally, we see Colorado’s sister truck, the Canyon, in the competition pool, put forth by GMC.

Chevrolet offers the Colorado in 4 trims. Price starts at $22K with the base trim and goes all the way up to $37K with the Z71 trim. The WT and the LT are the only trims which offer a choice between both RWD and 4WD. While the Base trim only comes a RWD option, the Z71 only comes in 4WD.

Which trim do we recommend?

Opting for the Base and WT only makes sense if you're getting it only from a profession perspective, to get the work done. Their bare-bones nature will make them feel inadequate for personal use. We suggest opting for the LT. It has a good variety of features, ranging from comfort features to safety features.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Engine and Performance

7.3/10

As standard, the Colorado comes equipped with a 2.5L Inline 4 paired with a 6 speed automatic transmission. The engine has a direct fuel injection system and variable valve timing which helps optimize fuel consumption without a hit in power generated by the engine. The engine makes 200 horsepower and 191 lb ft of torque.
The 6 speed transmission found here handles the power very well and seems like a match made in heaven when put together with the Inline 4. The transmission can be used both in a RWD or a 4WD.

As far as numbers are concerned, the Ford Ranger is a clear winner here. It makes some insane power, around 1.5 times more power and torque when compared to the Tacoma and nearly 50% more torque than the Colorado and Canyon. However, numbers don't mean everything.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado 0-60?

The acceleration promised by the Colorado is smooth if not quick. With a time of 7.1 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill, the acceleration cannot be called impressive, but simply adequate. The whole process however is very linear, with the gear shifts feeling impressively smooth. Both the engine and the transmission feel in their comfort zone pushing the Colorado forward.

As said above, the Colorado doesn't seem like it is struggling, but needs to do better to make its mark in this class. It places dead last when compared to its competitors, even the Canyon, which beat its time by a couple of hundred milliseconds. The Ranger and the Tacoma are the podium holders here.

How does the Chevrolet Colorado handle?

Among its competition, the Colorado provides the closest feel to a car-like driving experience, and that's good. However, it's still a truck, and that can be felt from time to time. The steering is well weighted and offers precise control. IT fails to provide any feedback to the driver however, which is a problem seen common among Chevrolet trucks. Its firm suspension handle body roll beautifully, and when unladen, the Colorado is a breeze to handle in the corners.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado 60-0?

Predictable is good when it comes to braking. The brakes on the Colorado are easy to modulate in day-to-day traffic. In harder stops the pedals tend to feel a little vague, but considering their good performance and stability, it can be given a hard pass. Going 60 mph, the brakes were able to stop this 4000 pounds truck at around 124 feet with minimal nosedive, which is excellent.

Colorado’s sister truck, the Canyon, was the only one able to perform better than it in the braking test. While the Tacoma performed admirably too, tying with the Colorado, the Ranger was left behind, or should we say went on ahead?

How much can the Colorado tow?

Chevrolet boasts the towing capacity on the Colorado. However, equipped with its standard gasoline engine, it manages an average result, with 7000 pounds as its maximum towing capacity and 1444 pounds of payload capacity. To get the most towing capacity out of the Colorado, the optional diesel engine is the way to go.

The Canyon takes the cake here, at least as far as towing capacity is concerned. The Ranger manages the best in class payload capacity.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The Colorado has both good fuel economy and a generous fuel tank, giving it a very decent range. Managing 20 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway, it gets a combined average of 22 miles per gallon, which paired with a 21 gallon fuel tank makes a very user friendly combination.

Here, the Ford Ranger can drink any truck under the table. Obviously, thats a bad thing. It manages the worst fuel economy in the class. Both the Colorado and the Canyon share the same numbers and are tied for the top spot in this class.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Interior

8.5/10

The insides of the Colorado are very attractive. From the materials used to the features provided, everything makes sure the occupants get an engaging experience with the Colorado.

Starting from the driving position. Since this is a pickup truck, the driver sits tall with a good view of the road up ahead. Looking down the hood is a little bit problematic however. Otherwise, the view both out the front and back is decent. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, helping any driver find a commanding position. Seats in the front row are heated and provide 4 way power adjustment for the passenger while the driver gets 6 way.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado seating layout

The rear row has adequate seating space for an extended cab, with the seats having a decent amount of storage space under them.

All trucks except the Tacoma seats 4 passengers while the Tacoma seats 5. Seating space in the front row of both the Colorado and the Canyon are identical and among the best in the class, taking the podium, with the Ranger a close second. The Second row however is another story, with the Tacoma in the lead.

What are the infotainment features of the Colorado?

The infotainment system in the Colorado is impressive. Armed with Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 Plus system, the Colorado manages to provide a ton of intuitive features which further elevates the experience of this impressive truck. It houses a 8 inch HD touchscreen which is well responsive to the user touch inputs. Its bluetooth game is strong, allowing 2 devices to connect at the same time. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both standard with voice control integration. Finally, its 6 speaker audio system provides clear highs and bassy lows.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado has infotainment screen

How much cargo space does the Colorado have?

While the front row of the Colorado has a good amount of the storage options, the rear row is a little problematic. Putting large items back there will be met with quite many difficulties. The cargo bed on the other hand is very easy to access. The body of the Colorado integrantes a cargo step which makes it easy to climb into the cargo bed itself. The bed is spacious enough to accommodate a good amount of cargo. Chevrolet offers a decent amount of accessories to fit your bed, ranging from bike carriers to utility racks.

The exterior of the Colorado looks very refined. See it standing in the dirt and it looks rugged enough to conquer any terrain, but see it under city lights at night and it almost looks polished and gentlemen-like. In any case, the Colorado gets heads turning. The projector headlights and fog lights up front not only look good, but provide good visibility. Depending on the trims, you get either black, body coloured or chrome bumpers. The rear bumper has a step put there to make climbing into the cargo bed easier. Completing the look are the 17” metallic cast aluminum wheels in all terrain tires.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Safety

2.0/10

Both manufacturers and customers alike make safety a priority these days. With more and more safety features being crammed into vehicles of all types, people are able to experience top notch safety for a fraction of the cost than what it used to be. While features like airbags and backup cameras are common, the Colorado has many other features too which make it very safe for both the people inside the cabin and those outside. Such features are:

  • Electronic Traction control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear parking assist
  • Teen driver
  • Tire fill alert
  • StabiliTrak

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Competition

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab vs 2020 Ford Ranger SuperCab

Ford has brought the Ranger back into the game very recently after a couple of years. Immediately, It has proven itself to be a worthy competitor. Compared to the Colorado, it makes more power, is quicker, tows more and is cheaper. Despite all that, the Colorado maintains better sales than the Ranger, as it has been proving its reliability for years, and also manages better fuel economy.

2020 Ford Ranger SuperCab

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab vs 2020 GMC Canyon Extended Cab

With both Colorado and the Canyon being sister trucks, it is surprising the latter manages to do so much more. The Canyon really impressed us here. It's a pity it doesn't manage to get the same number of sales as its sister.

2020 GMC Canyon Extended Cab

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab vs 2020 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

The Tacoma is the king of the hill. It might make less power, but manages to be just as quick, if not quicker than its competition. It manages to tow less than the competition, manages less fuel economy and has less interior space, but still holds its crown because of the excellent reliability which Toyota is known for.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

Colorado is a mid-size truck with the capabilities of the full-size truck. If equipped right, it carries the determination to school its competition. Colorado currently holds the sport of the second-best sold truck among its competition but has what it takes to jump to the spot of number one. However, it needs to look both ways, as there are other gunning for the same spot, and are getting close.

Cons - Rear seats space is crampped as well

good buy , worth having like i do This truck is very good looking, performs well, easy to use controls and is versatile enough to commute or travel in any weather. Love it. This vehicle is great. I use it to haul bigger items. I use it to go fossil hunting ... Everyone comments on how great it looks. It is a comfortable ride. Good gas economy. Nice durable paint finish. Very quick for passing other cars and merging. Okish, lot of delay in doc process.

The best truck for me

Pros - Cargo bed, legroom, radio

Cons - Dashboard is filled with controls

Is a great drive no matter where. Can do grocery runs and can also do a cross country trip without any issues. Colorado is a family and work truck combined! Has SiriusXM and Bluetooth. Also, the infotainment supports Apple CarPlay. Dashboard is too congested with controls making them harder to use. Other than that, no problems at all. The best looking truck in my opinion. I just LOVE it! The grille at the front with Chevy bowtie defines what a truck should be! Colorado has good safety ratings. More than 8 months and still going strong Very happy with the truck and with the deal I got. na
