The compact and mid-size pick-up truck segment has its charm where these trucks are equally capable of getting work done just like their full-size counterparts. Most people don’t need the capabilities that the full-size segment offers and are better off with a smaller truck for their day to day activities. This is where the compact yet powerful truck like the Chevrolet Colorado comes into the picture. Available with innumerable combinations of bed-size, engines, and cabin space, the Colorado has something to offer for everyone.

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is a part of the second generation Colorado launched in 2011 and has upgraded itself for the current model with few security features along with an optional improved infotainment system. The biggest change we see is the discontinuation of the 6-speed manual gearbox, which would be a loss for many out there. Apart from these, there are no changes in the engine segment, and the Chevrolet Colorado is still available with a diesel engine option, which starts at a price of $36,615. This puts the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab diesel variant in direct competition with the GMC Canyon, RAM 1500, and the mighty Ford F-150.

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado in its Crew Cab variant is available with a short-box or long-box bed size. Both the options provide a great volume of space to carry additional loading along with the greater towing capacity that comes with the diesel engine option. The Crew Cab provides enough space to carry five passengers with two rows of seats with enough room for everyone.

Even though the Colorado is available in a total of five trims, the option to opt for a diesel engine is available only with the LT and ZR2 variant. The 3.6-liter engine provides higher power output but lacks in terms of pulling power and thus limits the towing capabilities of the vehicle. Even after that, the Colorado would struggle to compete with the Ford F-150 and RAM 1500, which provides much more power at a similar price point.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Pricing and Features

9.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is available in 5 trims, but when we look at the Crew Cab variant, which is available with the 2.8-liter diesel engine, we see that we get to choose from just two trims out of five, which are the LT and ZR2 variant. Both these trims are available with all the latest technologies inside the cabin like the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with heated front seats and telescopic steering wheel. They are also equipped with all the safety features and driver assistance technologies as standard with the vehicle. Along with that, you get an option to choose from a variety of packages, which enhances the interior features along with the exterior looks.

The major difference between the LT and ZR2 is that the latter is tuned for exceptional off-road performance. The ZR2 comes fitted with multiple skid plates that protect the engine, fuel tank, transfer case, front, and differential. The suspensions are raised on the theZR2 along with a rear locking differential, especially for off-roading. The improved approach and departure angle helps move over the rocky and uneven surfaces with ease. The all-seasons tires on the LT variant are replaced with all-terrain tires. The ZR2 also gets few additional features like the hill descent control for additional support to the driver. Rest all the features like traction control, automatic climate control, forward collision, and lane departure warning system are all standard on both the trims.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

General Motors has made sure that the product they manufacture lasts longer with a minimum cost as possible. Till now they have done a great job with the Chevrolet Colorado and provided a high-quality product that has stood the test of time and proved to be highly reliable over the years. With that, the Colorado has managed to keep the cost of ownership at the lower end with lower maintenance costs and gradual depreciation over a few years.

What is the Reliability and Ownership Costs of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Diesel?

To understand how reliable a vehicle is, we prefer to look at the J.D. Power ratings for a particular variant. This organization conducts surveys and collects data from the actual owners of the vehicle. With that, they understand the overall experience of the customer and provides a rating on a 100 point scale. Various parameters like the quality, reliability, driving experience, resale value, and the dealership experience of the customers are considered, and an overall rating is provided to the vehicle. This helps us understand how reliable the vehicle is and where it stands as compared to its competitors.

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab diesel has received an overall rating of 80 out of 100, which is impressive for a pick-up truck. If we look at the table below, we see that it has scored a whopping 81 out of 100 on the quality and reliability factor. This is the trend we have seen with the Colorado for the past few years, and thus the vehicle stands high in terms of reliability.

Dealership Experience

Surprisingly, the Chevy Colorado takes a hit when it comes to the driving experience where it scores just 69 out of 100. The transmission is very reluctant sometimes to make the downshifts, which hampers the driving experience. The 2020 Colorado excels when it comes to the resale value. The vehicle does not see a sudden dip in the depreciation cost in the first two years, where it loses only around $3,700 in the first two years. Thus it provides higher resale value as compared to its rivals in this segment.

The cost of ownership does not include just the upfront cost paid to buy or lease the vehicle. It is dependent on various factors like the cost of insurance, maintenance, depreciation, and many more. One of the variable costs we encounter is the taxes levied on the vehicle each year as it changes for each individual state. Let’s take a look at the table below to understand the true cost of ownership of the Chevrolet Colorado.

The true cost of ownership of the Chevrolet Colorado over the period of 5-years is $34,366. We see that the maximum cost incurred is in the first year itself where we expect to spend around $9,383. Most of the most incurred are in terms of depreciation at $2,322 along with the tax of $2,473. The fuel cost remains almost similar over the years, but we see an increase in the maintenance cost as the years pass by.

What kind of Warranty does Chevrolet Colorado offer?

General Motors provides the best warranty in this segment when compared to its competitors. Especially the corrosion protection warranty that lasts for 6-years or 100,000 miles. Chevrolet has got you covered with a drivetrain warranty along with roadside assistance that takes some stress off your shoulders. Here are the details of all the things included in the warranty offered:

Criteria

Period

Basic

3 years or 36,000 miles whichever comes first

Drivetrain

5 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first

Roadside Assistance

5 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first

Corrosion Warranty

6-years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first

Miles Per Dollar

To understand how much does the Colorado travels with every dollar spent, we take the average cost incurred over the 5-years for fuel and maintenance costs. Considering that the vehicle will travel for an average distance of 15,000 miles, we divide the miles traveled by the average cost of fuel and maintenance. As per the cost of ownership table mentioned above, the average cost of fuel and maintenance for 5-years comes to around $2,692. Thus the miles traveled per dollar calculates out to around 5.57 miles/dollar.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab is available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 308 horsepower. But if you are looking at a higher towing capacity vehicle, the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine provides exactly a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. The diesel engine produces 186 horsepower along with a staggering 369 pound-feet of torque.

The standard 3.6-liter engine is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission while the diesel engine is coupled with 6-speed automatic transmission. Both these transmissions are controlled electronically. They perform exceptionally well during upshifts but we have seen resistance when it comes to downshifting with the speed reduction. This does take a toll on the driving experience.

Without any surprise, the RAM 1500 Crew Cab diesel outperforms all the competitors with a better power output of 260-hp with a slightly bigger engine. It is followed by the Ford F-150 Supercrew diesel, which produces 250-hp. These two provide higher pulling power as well, which drastically improves the towing capacity. The GMC Canyon Crew Cab diesel, which is one of the siblings of Colorado comes with the same engine configuration that produces slightly less power but comes on par in terms of torque figures.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Diesel Acceleration And Braking Performance

Acceleration is not the strongest suit of most of the pick-up trucks as they are geared more towards hauling higher loads. The same goes with the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab diesel where it takes its own time, 9.1 seconds to be specific, to accelerate to 60 miles per hour from a standstill.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab accelerate in 9 sec

The same goes with the GMC Canyon where it takes 9.2 seconds for 0-60 mph acceleration. The Ford F-150 is comparatively quicker than the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon and takes just 7.2 seconds to reach 60mph. It is immediately followed by the RAM 1500, which takes just 7.9 seconds.

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is comparatively lighter than its competitors at 4,496 pounds, thus manages to perform really well on the braking segment. It comes to a standstill from 60-mph in just 124-feet. With bigger brakes, the Ford F-150 takes more distance to come to a halt from 60-mph than Colorado. We see a similar performance on the RAM 1500 as well.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Diesel Drive Experience

Along with carrying the passengers, the primary goal of a pick-up truck is to haul heavy loads that need utmost precision and control behind the wheels. Thus to understand the driving experience, we need to look into how well does the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado control with minimum effort. The 2020 Colorado is quick to react on the steering wheel, which gives you the confidence to maneuver the vehicle and plant it in the exact position you need. The stiffer suspension setup helps stabilize the vehicle and provides confidence to handle the vehicle in the corners.

The diesel engine provides the ultimate punch even when the entire bed is loaded and helps to maintain the same stability at higher speeds. The driver sits high inside the cabin, which gives a clear view of the road ahead. The bigger windows help reduce blind spots. Along with that, the traction control, hill descent control, and electronic stability control help control the vehicle in different situations.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The 2.8-liter diesel engine proves to be very efficient as compared to the standard 3.6-liter petrol engine. The 2020 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab Diesel provides a mileage of 20 mpg in the city, which improves to 26 mpg on the highway. Combined together, Colorado provides a mileage of around 22 mpg. With a decent fuel tank capacity of 21 gallons, Colorado is equipped to provide a maximum range of 546-miles.

The Ford F-150 proves to be the most efficient in the competition where it provides a mileage of 21 mpg in the city and 29-mpg on the highway. The rest of the two, i.e the RAM 1500 and GMC Canyon perform similarly to the Chevy Colorado. With a massive 26-gallon fuel tank, the Ford F-150 covers a maximum distance of staggering 754-miles on a full tank of gas. Thus the Ford sweeps up its competition when it comes to mileage and range.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Interior

8.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab comes with a pretty decent interior. There's not a lot going on inside the cabin, and the design is minimalist. Although we can find a lot of traces of cheap plastic inside along the door trims and center console, the overall cabin space is comfortable. The cabin is spacious with enough room for 5-passengers to travel comfortably. The rear doors are comparatively smaller, which makes it a task for tall people to get in and out of the vehicle.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab front seats

But once inside, they have enough shoulder room to accommodate three passengers at the rear seat. The front driver seat has a 6-way power adjustment along with a 4-way power adjustment for the front passenger seat on the higher trims as standard.

The entire cabin is covered with soft-touch materials along with more space inside the cabin. The Ford F-150 follows the RAM in terms of interior spacing, where the Ford can accommodate up to 6 passengers inside. The GMC Canyon is on par with the 2020 Colorado in terms of cabin spacing, but it does come with a better design and feel inside. Here is the list of key features inside the Colorado Crew Cab:

  • Automatic climate control
  • Carpeted floor covering
  • 2 Charging-only USB ports
  • Chrome interior door handles
  • Driver and front passenger visors with illuminated mirrors

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Exterior

8.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado carries a standard body-on-frame structure, which provides improved strength to the vehicle. The 2020 Colorado looks muscular from the outside with its high stature, big LED headlamps, and a chrome front grille on the standard models. But when we move towards the off-road specialist ZR2 variant, the entire look changes to a more sporty and rugged exterior. The front bumper comes with a different design that supports a bigger front grille.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab

The suspensions are raised for better off-road performance along with higher approach and departure angle. Multiple skid places are provided to protect the underbody components. The Crew Cab is available in two-bed length options. The short-box measures 61.7-inches in length whereas the long-box measures 74.0-inches in length, which provides a larger volume to accommodate more load. The ZR2 variant comes with comparatively larger dimensions as compared to the standard LT variant.

The Ford F-150 has the longest wheelbase with 145-inch. The Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon have exactly the same dimensions with the GMC supporting a slightly higher ground clearance of 8.4-inches. All these vehicles are equally capable to tackle multiple terrains due to their higher ground clearance.

8.0/10

The Chevrolet has performed pretty well on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash test where it received an overall rating of 4-stars out of 5. The main reason for that is the higher risk of roll-over of the vehicle as it sits high above the ground. Along with that, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has also given an overall Good rating for the 2020 Colorado. Thus this proves that the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is a fundamentally safe car.

The vehicle is also equipped with certain safety features along with driver assistance technologies that help improve the safety factor of the vehicle. Here is the list of all these features that comes with the 2020 Chevy Colorado:

  • 6 airbags
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • Electronic traction control
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • HD Rear Vision Camera
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Park Assist
  • StabiliTrak, an electronic stability control system with traction control
  • Tire Fill Alert
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Competition

7.5/10

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Diesel Vs 2020 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Diesel :

The GMC Canyon is very similar to the Chevrolet Colorado in terms of performance. With a similar engine configuration, they provide almost the same power output and towing capacity. The GMC has the exact same footprint as Colorado, but the GMC excels when it comes to the interior design of the vehicle.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Diesel Vs 2020 RAM 1500 Crew Cab Diesel:

The RAM 1500 proves to be a better option in terms of performance and capacity. It hauls much higher loads than Colorado and is available at a similar price point. The RAM also has a premium interior that is way better than what is offered with Colorado.

2020 RAM 1500 Crew Cab Diesel

The same goes for the infotainment system along with better driver assistance technologies.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Diesel Vs 2020 Ford F-150 Supercrew Diesel

The Ford F-150 proves to be a beast in this segment. With a bigger diesel engine, it produces much higher power and torque and tow up to 12,500 pounds with its diesel engine. But the ZR2 variant is a much better-looking truck as compared to the Ford.

But with bigger dimensions inside-out, the Ford F-150 can carry more passengers than Colorado.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado diesel Crew Cab Final Verdict

8.5/10

Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab diesel has found a place for itself in this segment due to its higher quality and reliability factors. It does fall short on the driving experience with its lethargic gearbox and slower acceleration, but the ZR2 is a beast on off-roads. This is where the 2020 Colorado shines and provides performance like no other vehicle in this segment. The towing capacity is lower than the other competitors but would get most of your work done. Thus if you are looking for a great off-roading vehicle that would get all your day-to-day work done, you should definitely shortlist the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab diesel variant.

Both the trims are equipped with the same 2.8-liter turbo diesel inline-4 cylinder engine that produces the same power output. Both the variants are capable of towing up to 7,700 pounds of load and carry up to 1,578 pounds. But as mentioned earlier, the ZR2 is the one more tuned towards the off-road performance while the LT variant performs the best when it comes to highways and multiple terrains as well. Thus we would suggest opting for the LT variant, which provides a better value at a starting price of $36,615.

Is buying a used 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Diesel a good idea?

We see that the Chevrolet Colorado does not drastically depreciate in value during the initial years. Along with that, Chevrolet has a track record of building vehicles that are meant to last for years without compromising on reliability. Thus buying a used Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab would be a better decision as the used vehicle helps you save on some cash while providing all the same features as the new model.

The best truck for offroading under 50K

Pros - Leather seats, wrangler duratec tires, blacked out appearance

Cons - Engine noise

First experience with a diesel truck and everything makes sense. People usually prefer diesel for offroading and I now know why. Power at the tap of the pedal along with no compromise on fuel efficiency is what diesel gets me. My Z71 looks like it can perform in any situation and believe me when I say, it lives up to its apperance. All this doesn't however come noisefree. Few important ones like leather wrapped seats, Duratec Wrangler all terrain tires, Cruise control, android auto, and 8'' touch screen are present Premium leather bucket seats along with good legroom in both rows for comfort. All safety and driving convenience features on board to make the driving easier and safer. The best part of my Z71 undoubtedly. Black gloss with blacked out appearance overall on the outside. Z71 badging in red on side fenders and duratec tires create a perfect combination which seems like demanding road presence wherever I drive it. All the safety features are on board. Drives through just about everything that comes in the way which never lets me doubt the solid built quality. No issues at all. Happy with the mileage, built quality, fit and finish, and the quality of parts used. Best reliablility I've had in years $12k followed by $519 monthly installments. Not a bad deal at all Dalton was amazing throughout the process and everything he advised made sense.

Colorado has a trim for everyone I guess

Pros - MPG, towing capability, smooth transmission

Cons - No roof spoiler, noisy engine, bluetooth

I'm glad Chevy has a diesel option in Colorado. Did my homework and took a good whole month to be able to rule or any late remorses. Colorado seemed to be better in terms of pricing and ownership experience. Diesel engine cleared any skepticism for mpg and towing capbilities. Now I have a ride which can tow without being too hard on the pocket and giving the smooth driving quality up. Great work from Chevy I'm glad Chevy has a diesel option in Colorado. Did my homework and took a good whole month to be able to rule or any late remorses. Colorado seemed to be better in terms of pricing and ownership experience. Has a luxury package on it which has a bunch of convenience features to look up to. Costed an extra 2.5K for this package Comfortable seats in both rows with ample amount of leg and headroom to look up to. The engine noise is quite prominent inside as well and Chevy should have paid a little more attention sealing out the interiors completely. Bluetooth on the other hand seems to be acting up. Would not connect my phone and this has been there since I bought it. I've been asked to bring it one last time for this issue and they might have to replace the whole thing. Not sure why they didn't replace it at first. Black gloss paint on the body and chrome work at the front and back on a truck, in my opinion, that's the best execution for a truck which is not perceived for the design. Roof mounted spoiler is missing though. Reliable cruise control, rear view camera, anti theft system etc, everything came in standard. We never felt short of any features dedicated for safety. It's just the bluetooth which has had issues all this time, everything else present works pretty fine $467 for 72 months of financing tenure. Well it's a diesel which meaning I'm saving on fuel as well. Not great unfortunately. They have been neglecting the bluetooth issue and now after so much time, they have decided to change it for which I'm not even sure if they'll

Turbo diesel for workaday

Pros - Impressive low end, mpg, best for hauling and towing

Cons - Noisy engine, cold morning start, no body protection

Love my Colorado for what it can do A diesel truck for work purposes, sounds the best thing and it is no doubt an ideal truck for workaday. Low end is amazing which gets it going no matter what is holding it back with just a tap on the throttle. Sure gets noisy past 2k revvs. A lot noisy I should add Turbo diesel engine which not only makes it better for towing and hauling but also saves the day because of its economy I got this Colorado for work and comfort was not the priority. It does a great job keeping us comfortable on the inside. The design looks simple and I like it Not having body protection on the sides as well as underneath does leave room for things to get ugly Turbo diesel which saves on fuel cost and delivers exactly what a truck owner would want @496/m of lease for four years, I think we got pretty lucky at the dealership My brother works there in finance which eased out the process quite significantly
